The game description gives the idea there is a story here .... there is not.
The graphics were ok. The music was all flutes and aaahhhhs ... boring. But, if you're sleep-deprived, this will put you under in no time.
The game is boring. The MOST boring marble shooter game I've ever played. There is NO choice of difficulty. You can't speed things up. Everything moves so slow you can't help but catch the bonuses.
This definitely isn't a purchase for me and I would only recommend it for beginners who have never played this genre before.
I've now played both the CE and SE demos of this game and still love it as much as the first time I played it. Does that even make any sense?????
So many questions, and so far, no answers. Your character is Madam Roche and you have been hired by the renowned and talented artist, Lautrec, to find out the truth behind Sophie's murder. The popular, beautiful and talented Star of the Moulin Rouge, She was murdered. And, by her death, secrets long buried are now exposed. But, what are those secrets? And who can they harm? And how?
I was very impressed with this game. The graphics were amazing, the music beautiful and the voice overs were in perfect sync with .... lip syncing.
There are 4 difficulty modes (casual, challenging, expert and, yes, CUSTOM). Be sure to check each item in the "Custom" setting as there may be items you want to "uncheck". Objectives pop up in a box telling you what your next objective is and when an objective has been achieved. There is an Achievements (25) button near your Inventory. Plus items will be in your inventory a LOT.
The optional "tutorial" was STILL annoying to me. Usually, after reading whatever instruction it gives you, you can click the "x" button or anywhere outside the instructions and it will go away. Not so here. Until you perform THAT instruction, it will stay like an annoying little flying insect around your head (maybe not the best analogy.
Eventually, you will find a "journal". However, when you hover your mouse over it, it's titled an "Evidence Board". Blooper? Upon opening this "journal", you will see pictures of interested parties of the case. Click on the picture and see a dossier of that person. As you play the game, an Exclamation Point (!) will appear on it, Open it. Another (!) will appear on 1 or more of the pictures. Click on the picture and move the arrows on the right side up or down to see what new "evidence" has been found. There is also an "Objectives" and "Task" tab at the top.
Also eventually, you will receive a map. There are "Task" and "Objectives" tabs at the top. Task and Objectives are indicated on the map using very tiny icons. Truthfully, so small I almost missed them completely. However, if you follow the game, you'll know where you need to go. You will also receive, during the game, location cards to give the driver of your carriage. There is no legend for "this is where you need to be", etc.
The HOGs (hidden object games were vary interactive and there are a variety of ways to play. In the list items type, there is an alternative match 3 game you can play. Very easy. And, sometimes there are mini games IN the HOGs. Way cool! As for the mini games. I found there were more available than HOGs. At least in the demo. Fun, some new things we've not seen before. Some require patience (a virtue) and perseverance. I believe I skipped one to get back to the game play but WHEN I own the game I will figure THAT one out - guar-an-teed!
Who murdered Sophie and why? Why don't the Police believe it was murder? There was poison near the body and on one of the roses at the crime scene. What does this signify? Why is Lautrec so interested in Sophie's death? Yes, they were close friends but his interest is ...... almost ..... obsessive? And what happened to the close friendship between Sophie and Odette? Does Odette believe the Janitor murdered Sophie? Who is behind the mask character always showing up - everywhere you go? Man or female? Friend or foe? So many, many questions and more questions and suspects come up during the game. But, WHAT really happened? All will be answered when you play this amazing adventure and mystery game.
I wasn't sure if this was a child's game as it wasn't advertised or described as such.
The problem I had with this game was the absolute simplicity of it. Yes, it IS a hidden object game. Find the objects listed in the picture shown. Very easy to find. A few mini games thrown in for good measure. Match games, put the jigsaw puzzle together, compare the 2 pictures. All easy. Even the connect-the-dot game wasn't a "real" connect the dot game as it stopped and started rather than going in a continuous line.
There are 3 levels of difficulty but there was no way to change your difficulty unless you entered a new profile and started a new game.
This would be a great game for children. For adults? Sorry, I think most adults would be bored silly. I was and so it's no purchase for me. I won't recommend it, per se. But, I will say, if you do play it, I hope you...........
Your character is Emma Roberts (NOT the Emma Roberts related to Julia Roberts of Pretty Woman fame). You have been asked to investigate the goings on at Hotel Berkeley. It seems guests are leaving in droves! Why? GHOSTIES and things that go bump in the NIGHT! ooooooooooooo.
Graphics were great. Finally, a DEV who knows how to color the night without using the magic blue crayon too much. THANK YOU! Sound was great as well. Voiceovers perfect. Lip syncing - check. Sound effects couldn't have been better, even the sound of the swinging gate at the opening scene. Love, love, love.
There are 4 difficulty modes: Casual, Normal, Hard and .... yes .... "CUSTOM"! In the "custom" mode, you can turn on/off a lot of aspects of the game. For instance, check out what you can allow (or not) on the map. COOL BEANS!
I didn't see a diary/journal but you get the coolest map. Again, check the "custom" mode because you can set it up to not only show where you are, where the objectives/tasks are but also where the collectibles and ............... MORPHING OBJECTS are! wooo-hooooo!
The HOGs (hidden object games) varied from silhouettes to list. In the list type, there was an alternative game you could play. I didn't so can't comment on that. The mini-games were fun and I didn't find them altogether difficult. Time-consuming and needing some thought, but not particularly difficult. IMO the ratio of HOGs to Mini Games was fairly even.
CE Bling: Besides the usual music, wallpaper, strategy guide and bonus game, there are: Collectibles: 5x5. Five sets of 5 different items. I'd list them but you can just go to the "Extras" section yourself and find out what they are. Morphing Objects: YAY! Haven't seen those in forever and a DAY! There are 33 of them. Good luck because they are NOT always so obvious.
I think this game has some length although the map was half-way gone through when the demo ended. You do go back and forth to the same locations quite a bit. Thank goodness for the transportable map. And, I can't believe the DEVS would let the story plot "out of the bag", so to speak, so early in the game. Caroline and Sam inherited the hotel, Sam is sick, Caroline is using Emma as the last of the 13 keys to make him well. Noooooo. This is a "Fear for Sale" game. There has to be more to the plot than that. And, THAT'S why I am purchasing this game. CE version and all. They had me at the morphing objects.
Why then did I only give 4 stars? Because the whole ghosts in a hotel has been done and I got a sense of deja vu. So, for that reason I went down one star. Otherwise, this is a great game and I recommend it for everyone. Go ahead .... go.... the ghosts at the Hotel Berkeley await.
Ok, I have to admit I know nothing about arming characters with magical clothes, equipment, etc. to do battle. I don't know about powering up shields, or anything else. I DO know how to play a match 3 game pretty well. And that's all this was, a mtatch 3 game wherein you matched items of 3 or more, then your opponent gets a turn. Ultimately, one of you kills the other off.
Well, after killing off 2 BIG BOSS MONSTERS and all the little monsters in between, I got bored.
I think this is a game of strategy, but since I don't have any knowledge of this kill or be killed game play, I couldn't very well be strategic. I can't play strategy games anyway. But, I STILL killed 2 BIG BOSS MONSTERS and all the little monsters in between.
Needless to say I was bored. Needless to say, it offered me no challenge whatsoever. Needless to say, I won't be purchasing this game nor recommending it.
I thought this might be better played by an artist or art student or gallery owner .... as I played the game. The fact is .... any of the aforementioned would be bored to tears with the constant clicking back and forth to find out what your task is, that you completed your task (wouldn't you know that?), go here, fly there, bid on something you can't afford and the constant clicking clicking clicking.

Nah. There was absolutely no potential.
In "Expedition" Mode. Hear the most boring story ever told. In "Relaxed" Mode, it's not much better, you just aren't timed. Which is great because in "Expedition" Mode there is no hope of beating the clock. The "Bonus" round gave insufficient instructions. I did what I was told and still .... nothing happened.
The voiceovers spoke over each other which was disconcerting. And, WOW, I found an artifact. But, all the artifices or pieces of artifacts I found amounted to a hill of beans because .... you never really saw them.
It's a game where you have a conveyor belt on the bottom, except it doesn't move. There are specifically shaped pieces on this "belt" that you must put into the empty spaces on the game board, color to color, shape to shape. Whoopee. THAT'S the whole game. I couldn't do it to beat the clock and it became boring, quickly, on the relaxed setting.
In the opening scene, Death talks about how important it is that when it's your time, you must go. If not, if those who try to run away from they fate, there will be a rift in time.
Graphics were just ok. I really dislike that magic blue crayon DEVS seem to need to try to represent a snowy evening. Ugh. Voice overs were great. LOVED the voice of Death. Can't comment on the music. It obviously didn't make much of an impression on me.
There are 3 difficulties: casual, advanced and hard core. I choose to play the demo on casual and opt for the Tutorial so I can get a good idea of what the game has to offer.
There is a diary of sorts. You must find Death's missing pages of a book. Death gives you several tools during the game to use in your endeavors. One is your interactive map (in the form of a crystal ball). I found the map so intricate it was difficult to use and so just "transported" through the hint button. There is also an amulet that allows you to speak to the dead. The hint button (which is on the LEFT side of the screen) did take a bit to recharge. There is a "task" tab located ON your Inventory tab.
The HOGs (hidden object games), while interactive, were simple list items that were not terribly difficult to find. The mini games were some old, some new and fun, fresh and innovative. Even if on the easy side. IMO the mini games outweighed the HOGs.
Death is seeking the assistance of your character, a Detective, to locate those people running from their fate, trying to "cheat" Death. Not only must you find those people, but you need to find evidence of their nefarious plans for cheating Death. Good luck.
The first story involves a young woman, her boyfriend, missing women and one of them is "cheating" Death. Who is it? And how is he/she doing it. That's what you need to solve.
CE Bling: In addition to the usual wallpaper, concept art, strategy guide, achievements, etc. we have .... A solitaire game A Secret Room (is this ADDITIONAL game play or where collectibles go?) Collectibles: 52 playing cards (I found 1/4 during the demo AND there are multiple cards in each location). Collectibles: I found 3 statuettes in the demo. Does that mean each "story" has it's own collectible figurines??? Bonus Game
I do own the other games in this series. I was unimpressed with this one. Immediately, there was no sense of "let's go here and do this", necessitating the use of the "hint" button a few times. The story seemed disjointed and didn't flow well ..... until you got to the end. There was no indication of how many should you had to find "cheating Death" but I would venture to say not that many as I found a good 1/4 (or slightly more) of the collectible playing cards during the demo.
I don't think this is CE worthy at all. I don't even think I'll get it with a PCC when the SE comes out. It just didn't give me my personal "wow" factor. in fact, I was easily distracted by my puppy more than a few times.
I'll recommend this for beginners, as it was extremely easy.
Take a look at the picture shown with the game's title. Correct me if I'm wrong. Do you see .... kind of spooky letters? A spooky looking pumpkin??? That's as spooky as these pictures get in this awful selection.
There are 13 pages per section. Sections include "treat" (food), "family" (family pictures), "trick" (children and adults smiling in their costumes), "autumn" (pictures of what this DEV perceives as Autumn pictures") and I can't remember the other ... probably "nauseatingly sweet" or something. NO! That's right, it was about decor and THAT wasn't spooky either.
You can modify the pieces to bend and change shape up to +100 (whatever that means). I went all the way to +100 and there was the barest minimum of change in the shape of each piece. You can also change the number of pieces up to 330. Now, that WOULD be a challenge ... if I could find ONE picture I wanted to work on. You can also choose to have to "rotate" the pieces ... or not.
I want my Halloween jigsaw puzzles, especially if there a purported 500 to choose from, to include sappy, sweet, scary, HOWLING, even some Samhaim (from where it originated). What I DON'T want is the same saccharin sweet (toooo sweet) picture after picture after picture. As usual, the inside of the "box" is not what is portrayed on the "outside".
The DEV does a whole series of these types of puzzles. All of them misleading by name and picture on the game. Get inside and it's all boring drivel. I LOVE jigsaw puzzles. But, I want to be interested in what I am doing. If there isn't at least a handle of pictures in 500 to interest me ... then it's just not worth my time or money.
Not a purchase for me, nor will I recommend a game that has such a misleading photo of what it truly has to offer.
There really is no story line. You are a contestant at the stage show and you have to find items that are listed. Once that is completed a few times, you "spin the wheel" to find out which mini game you will play (for instance, spot the difference.
The graphics are good. Although some of the items in the HOGs are so well-blended into the foreground OR background, that they can't be seen. The sound is another matter all together. I could certainly do without the "audience laugh track" as it contained not just "laughter" but :oooohhhhs and aaaahhhhs" depending on whether you find something or not. It was annoying!
There are obstacles you have to overcome. Skip chips and hint chips to find during the game to be used in mini games, etc.
There is sooo much wrong with this game, I just won't play a demo, I'll pass on this one.
I do, however, recommend it for anyone who has more patience than I do, regardless of the difficulty of the modes. I'm just done.
