I found this game a really mixed bag, but it was how it ended that really caused me to ding the star rating.
The Good:
-The art work and graphics are awesome, just so very beautiful
-The story-line (what there was of it) was pretty decent
-The HOS scenes are lovely, I much prefer these ones where you collect items to make a whole other item rather than random objects
The Bad
-The SE game is *extremely* short. This will only take about 3 hours to complete for the average gamer.
-The ending was abrupt, like the story had been cut short. It's really obvious that the SE game is just a cut-down version of the CE. That is rather unfair on those people who buy the SE. It would be better and more fair to make the SE a decent-length game and the CE the same game with some awesome extras and really different bonus chapters rather than miss-sell the SE as a part-game, which is what this really was. For that reason I have not recommended this. If your budget is limited and you can't always afford to buy the CE games, then don't but this one if you want an SE of decent length!
I don't recommend this game.

Bought this ages ago and now playing it again. I love the game but have to give it a three simply because it is way to short. I can complete the game in less than a couple of hours on the hard setting and this is not even my fav genre. There are other Miner games out there and if BFG bring them here, I recommend that they make them longer!

Pros:
1-Excellent graphics
2-Nice cut scenes
3-Good story
4-Decent length, especially for an SE
5-Nice HOS, the items are clear but not too easy, the scenes not too cluttered. Just right really.
Cons:
1-There is a lot of back-tracking and walking around to use the items you collect along the way so wear a comfy pair of trainers! ;-)
2-There is an annoying repetition of one particular style of mini-game which got a bit boring.
3-More could have been done with a very lovely and mysterious box, the contents of which you collect on the way. When I had filled all the sections I expected something to happen, but it didn't so a chance missed there by the developers to add a little something to the story.
4-Not that challenging. I played on "Expert" and had no need of any help or walkthrough.
However, I did enjoy it, a really decent game and very good value for an SE. Would recommend.
I recommend this game!

I bought this way back in 2009 and recently played it again, reminding myself just how good it is. There is no running around like a demented chicken trying to gather resources and beat the clock. You actually have to use your brain with this one and build wisely and well. I loved the teacher who kept popping up in indignation at the success of his pupil (you!) and trying to stymy progress. Just loads and loads of fun. Wish I had replayed it sooner than this!
I recommend this game!

The storyline is now a well-used one (a pair of lovers and one has to rescue the other from dire straits and evil), but the game doesn't suffer for it because the story-line, although simple, is good. Loved the map, helpful but not too overly helpful to spoil the challenge and it helped with not having to run back and forth through the scenes, which is just as well because there are quite a lot of locations. The graphics are good, the quality of cursor accuracy is good, the HOS are good. The puzzles are a bit basic but not enough to spoil the game. The ending is a little bit abrupt and that may cause a bit of disappointment in the SE if the ending is the same. The bonus chapter is excellent and rather than just being an add-on it's a story almost in it's own right which gives an extra hour or two game-play, depending on how fast one likes to rush through things. I like to take in the scenery so it was an extra couple of hours and well worth getting the CE. Good game, well made and very satisfying to play.
I recommend this game!

I have played the other Dark Parable games and this one is as good as the others IMO.
A big plus for me are the HOS. I get bored with hidden object scenes where you are looking for objects that don't match the names and are so tiny that you squint at the screen for ages to find a match-stick that looks like a pin (you know the kind of thing. ;-).
What I love about the HOS in this game is that the pieces go to make useful objects which are a part of the story, and both the pieces and the scenes are beautifully rendered.
Okay, the challenge level is not all that, but that doesn't worry me when there is a good story, nice cut scenes and decent rendering, which this game has in abundance. I played in the normal mode and the game lasted about 8 hours, I was in no hurry, just ambling along enjoying the ride.
Any minuses? Not really. I had no problem with the "killing animals thing" because it's a fantasy game and the wolves bear no relation to reality. The map is not a "jump to" but it is useful and the travelling back to various points was quick and not annoying for me. Got no problem recommending this.
I recommend this game!

I tried the demo of this because it was being offered on a special £2.30 deal. It's sometimes nice to go back and try the older games using these special deals (thanks BFG!#.
But this one, I had to call it quits after about 20 minutes. It would be quicker to say what I liked rather than what I did't like! The street scenery was lovely and cute. That's it folks. The rest was confusing, badly explained and clunky. I picked the harder level and still got sparkles all over the place when the cursor moved over active areas #hint to developers....the whole point of expert level is to take away the sparkles to make it harder!). But the most annoying thing which really did it for me was that huge annoying banner right across the middle of the screen every minute or so. It's a shame because the background scenery was lovely and the story idea a reasonable one.
I don't recommend this game.

I have no hesitation of scoring this 5 stars all around.
The story is different - what a refreshing change from all the dark (almost satanic) stories we get these days
Level of challenge - very flexible. There are only two levels of play. If you don't want much of a challenge then play the Casual mode and use the map. If you want something medium-hard do the expert level (which means no sparkles and hint button takes longer to recharge) but feel free to use the excellent map which shows where actions are needed and take you directly there. If you want the hardest experience then take the expert level and stay away from the map....believe me, it will take you days and days to complete if you do it that way!
Sound and visual quality are good, the cut scenes are decently done.
The fun factor is good if for no other reason than it is a good story and that makes it something very different from so many other games out there at the moment.
More like this please BFG!! ;-))
I recommend this game!

This is a super game, it has it all. Lovely graphics, decent (meaning non-intrusive!) music, characters which make a story and good challenging solitaire. And while length of the game is not everything, this game is satisfyingly long. More like this please BF!

I love match-3 games and look forward to new ones given that most releases these days are Hidden Object games. This one was a disappointment though. The problems were:
-Lack of story line
-Clumsy cursor which was too large for the tiny squares, meaning that one often missed and hit the next square instead
-Squares slow to clear impacting on game time
-Graphics rather crude given what can be achieved these days
-Annoying repetative music (not really a deal-breaker because I often turn down the music on games anyway)
All in all, not one worth buying, glad I played the demo rather than just going ahead and buying because it was a Match-3 (something I have done in the past without regret).
I don't recommend this game.
