This would have been a great game 20 years ago. Sadly, it looks dated, is slow, lacks entertainment and flows like yesterday's cement. Old school HO, everything hidden in trash piles and then there is just more HO scenes. On the plus side it was genuinely creepy in places. However, it looks like something Big Fish found at the back of the wardrobe.
There are morphing objects, collectibles (machine parts and manuscripts) and the storyline wasn't tiresome. (Sorry developers but I am regularly disinterested in your stories) This game has everything. And all from a most unexpected developer too. The only reason this hasn't scored five out of five in all areas is because you can't stop the dwarf and werewolf yacking at you when you look at stuff and occasionally the graphics are a little dated. I hope you get game of the year at Christmas time because I am never this impressed.
It used to be that in the good old days you got extras with your CE. These days developers simply remove the interesting stuff from the SE so they can call the CE good value. With no collectibles this game is below average. I really enjoyed the trial of the CE but wasn't enthused enough to spend real money on it. So I treated myself when the SE came out and used a bonus card. I have deleted it from my game manager without having completed it. If developers are going to continue this trend of removing gameplay from standard games instead of heaping extras into the Collectors Edition then the Big Fish bonus punch scheme is totally devalued. From here on it seems that SE stands for Sub-standard Edition.
I loved the first game in this series. It still ranks as one of my all time favourite games. I can't believe that this is made by the same people. The game play was very linear, you got objects pretty close to where you needed them and they were not difficult to get. HOS's were too easy, puzzles the same. I'd say this was suitable for a novice player or a child. Would only buy it if I desperately needed to use up a punch card credit.
This is awful. The graphics are ten years out of date, usually I can forgive this if the gameplay is interesting but sadly it's not. There are two modes, casual and expert, I can't find much difference between the two. Probably hint recharges much faster, but since Hint is as much use as a chocolate teapot there seems little benefit. There is a 3D option but this induces nausea. There is not necessarily a change in cursor when you stumble across an active object, sometimes I had a magnifying glass or a directional arrow but not always. So this is game of endless blind clicking. I reached a point where I couldn't see where to go or what to do next and that should be a claim that the game is hard. It's not. It's just poorly devised.
An unexpected find from a gamemaker that could be one to watch. Especially after a disappointing run from ERS and Elephant lately. Those two should take note that we like our beyond objects/collectables, we like to extend the game play beyond hidden object scenes and finding crowbars. Storyline is not so new (venture into the dreams of a girl being targeted by scary man in a cloak) but competently done. Gameplay is a little left of field so I found myself unexpectedly challenged. Puzzles are good, varying between easy and challenging, I found I had to skip one just so as not to waste my free play. This review is based on the free trial, this was actually an hour not a set number of moves that usually ends up between 30-40 mins, so I can't tell how big this game might end up. I had found 20/100 beholders but only 2 pieces of the dream catcher. Great effort, love the beholder nasties, love collecting the dreamcatcher pieces. Am off to buy it now!
Just when I thought nothing would ever beat a crowbar along comes Elf the superdog. I won't give away spoilers but you'll know by the end of the game. Best game I've played in a long time. Graphics superb but don't slow your gameplay (I hate when the cleverness gets in the way#. Music there but not irritating. HOS fab - love that you have to fetch stuff from your inventory to complete tasks whithin them. Mini games taxing but not frustratingly so. Think I only had to skip one. Thankfully you can teleport around using the map because the back and forth was immense #that's a good thing from my point of view# Moving between scenes didn't lag too badly either. Thumbs up for another Mystery Tracker success. I didn't get the CE edition and I wonder if the owls grew in significance in the extras cos it really felt that I should have been collecting them #and i love collecting nonsense whilst completing thirty virtual marathons) Any chance I can keep the dog?
This seems like a really old game. Whether I've just played too many Hidden Object games I can't be sure. I don't want to give away any spoilers so I won't comment on the storyline. Graphics seem low grade, the child you meet in the grounds looks like he is made of dough and talking by remote control. HOS are dull even though there are several two part tasks (fit the wheel to car to find the car) but even the list is uninspiring. From the graphics to the cursor. I couldn't find one thing and that was because the image was too dark to see it. Shame, the premise is one that usually grabs me. Who doesn't want to break in to the spooky asylum in the dark and the rain, sigh.
