Even with the bad reviews I thought this was going to be a good game. It definitely could have been, but wasn't. To start with, there is a very long, drawn out intro that you are not allowed to skip...ever...and it replays every single time you start the game. So if, like me, it takes you many, many attempts to get through the whole game, start it and go fix a cup of tea cuz it's going to be awhile. Like everyone else said, way too much dialogue although muting it and just reading it made it much better. Good snarky factor between brother and sister. And lastly, the graphics were annoying. Every time you clicked on something, whether is was right or wrong, the scene blurred and refocused. And there was so much stuff in every single scene, it was hard to see anything. Some of the hidden objects were so small you couldn't tell what they were. Heck, even some of the large ones you couldn't tell what they were. I used the hint button consistently in every scene, and all it did was give you a grid and "look in this box". More than once I found myself just clicking around in that box til I hit on the right thing. Finally, the ending...or I should say the beginning of the next adventure. More dialogue...white print over a character in a large, long white robe. So if you've muted it because the voice overs are so annoying, you also can't read it. Avoid this one, it's a bust.
I read the story after buying the game and do like the games version better since it fleshes it out more. The scenes are absolutely beautiful and the music is lovely... except that it runs on a really short loop and plays the same thing over and over again. I muted it within minutes, something I rarely do. Why do I hate it? Because there is absolutely no rhyme or reason to anything you do. There is no using your brain and working through the problem, just stumbling from room to room hoping for some tiny little crumb to go on.
Example: I would say "spoiler" but seriously, who's going to remember this??? You need a gear for a telescope...found it but it's bent...here's a vise to use to straighten it out...but the handle is missing...gotta get through this door but the lock/handle are broke...use the saw the cut through the lock...but the saw is too thick, take the blade out of the handle...but the blade is too sharp, find something to wrap it with...take wrapped saw blade and cut your way into the room...puzzle on the wall missing a piece...oh here's a wax statue...melt the statue on the boiler, there's the missing puzzle piece...replace the puzzle piece and work the puzzle, get a piece of chalk...go to the table and grind the chalk in the mortar & pestle...mix the chalk with the vinegar in the distiller to make "steam" to cause the key that found its way to the bottom of the distiller, to rise to the top...take the key and open a cupboard...take the vise handle, place it in the vise and fix the gear...place the gear in the telescope and discover you're missing a lens. WHAT???
I like a game that makes me think. This one made me pull my hair out. Ignore all the great reviews, I wish I had, and try it before you buy it. Seriously.
Lots of scenes to visit but to much back and forthing. You either ended up with lots in your inventory with no obvious use for any of it or "you need a key...hey look, there's a key". I like games that make me think and this wasn't it. It either held my hand or frustrated the heck out of me because of no logical "next move". Plus there was a ridiculous amount of dialogue, only about half really needed. Took me about 4 hours and while I didn't hate it, I did delete it when I was done. Definitely try the demo first and then decide.
I don't recommend this game.

This was a beautiful, clever, creative game that I thoroughly enjoyed playing. Beautiful graphics, well done HOS, good variety of mini-games ranging from easy to ridiculous (I did have to look up the answer to one in the walk through and I kid you not it required over 50 clicks to complete!!!) Traveling between past and present (OK, 19th century present), the power to materialize, illuminate, super strength. Just an all around good time that I'll be playing again and again.
This game was an absolute blast!!! Great storyline, beautiful graphics, plenty of challenge. Plenty of HOS that were light and bright and easy to see if not easy to solve...some very clever placements that really made you work for it. Lots of mini-games, no 2 alike, some so easy you think it must be a trick and others that really make you think (there's a train track one I did just finally skip). I don't generally like to-ing and fro-ing but this did it in a way I just didn't mind. There were so many different places to go that it didn't feel repetitive. And you would carry just enough in your inventory that you had to stop and think, "hmm where did I see that, oh yeah!" There were some glitchy bits with the music and sound which was too bad because they really did add to the creepy factor of the game. Good ending with a nice wrap up...all in all just a wonderful game.
I did finally learn to "try before I buy" and wow am I glad I did! So this review is based on the 1 hour trial but had I purchased it I would never, ever have finished it. PROS: Nada CONS: --Sounds and music so loud and annoying even at their lowest setting I finally just turned them off. (And I'm someone who generally has no trouble tuning them out!) --HO's everywhere and while I really like clever challenges, these were mostly just junk piles thrown together. --Constant to-ing and fro-ing. About 5 rooms with many, many MULTIPLE things to do in each...find this in room 1, run it to room 5, that gives you this, run it to room 3 which gives you this for room 2, etc., etc., etc. --And finally, the THINGS TO DO. You could not go anywhere, advance in anyway in any room without "finding something first." OK, 3, 4, 5 sparkles? Click, oops you need a key, click, oops you need a lever, click, oops you need...there was SOOOO much to do in EVERY SINGLE ROOM there was no way to keep it straight. The hint button does tell you where you need to go and what to do, but what's the fun in that??? If a game is too "busybusybusy" to be able to keep anything straight in my own head, there's no point in playing. These games should be a challenge that makes me think, not an impossibility that just ticks me off.
So a dragon, a knight and a magician walk into a bar...

Seriously! This is a cute, clever and creative game and ditto on all the good things said about looks and sound. There's not an overabundance of HOGs and there's a nice variety of mini games. Most pretty easy with a few thinkers thrown in, although those were usually because the directions were so vague. The ending was pretty abrupt but cheer worthy so that was OK. The bonus chapter...not worth the extra money for the CE. You collect coins throughout for??? There's a "store" but all they offer are sketches and music from the game. I love a game that sucks me in, really challenges me and makes me think. This wasn't it. But it was a fun and incredibly long romp that should appeal to most players... well, unless you hate dragons, knights and magicians.
This game just made no sense. I understood the whole "saving the parents" thing but...there were critters and characters and plot lines that I just didn't get the point of. Whenever you picked things up you were just told "Oh, you found something!" but would have to click on the item to see what it was. You'll walk around with a ton of things in your inventory not knowing what you'll ever use them for until you're told to use them. "Mix A+B+C=D and use it here". What is the fun in that??? And the voice overs were lovely but EVERYWHERE! "Oh look, a green frog, I shall place it in my inventory." And I'm sorry but I lived in England for 3 years and NEVER heard "inventory" pronounced the way she did. The bonus chapter might have been good but the very 1st puzzle locked up on me. When I shut down and restarted the game, I'd apparently moved on with 3 new things in my box that I had no idea how they got there or what they were for. HUGE disappointment and definitely NOT a keeper!!!
If you loved "Queen of Spades" then you'll love this, but it just wasn't my cup of tea. Lots of to-ing and fro-ing and not very challenging. The graphics and music were actually quite beautiful but they lost serious points when the same tune played over and over and over again, especially towards the end (just like in QoS). And I don't know about anyone else but a tiny little man with a really big head as the bad guy just isn't all that scary to me. Not scary, eerie, exciting or stimulating and certainly doesn't make you think. Really quite boring and won't be playing again.
Started out thinking, "oh this looks like it's going to be cute." Moved onto, "Ugh, not much action, yawn." By the end of the first hour, WOW!!! The storyline is really rather non-existent but the graphics are gorgeous and the music is beautiful. But the puzzles??? Wow. The sheer variety and creativity were amazing. The HOGs weren't just "find 'em", but later "put 'em where they belong", the sugar in the coffee, the lid on the pot, etc. No blood, guts and gore, not creepy or eerie but wow, what a challenge. The mini games really made me think and yes, the instructions were pretty much useless. Half the challenge was figuring out what to do, the other half actually doing it. I did skip one puzzle and when I looked at the walk through afterward (I did get stuck on the game once and had to cheat just a little), I thought, "well duh". I had figured out A and B but didn't put them together to get C. So this is a thinking/reasoning/deducting game more than anything else and man, what a blast!
