For me, this game has it all: Superb graphics, fitting music, just enough HO scenes, engaging puzzles, an awesome map, and an entertaining story. I do agree with other reviewers who wrote that some of the gameplay was easy; I found this to be the case about a quarter of the way in and simply increased the difficulty level. There is much to do in this game but I never once felt overwhelmed or bored, and found myself eager to go back and forth.
The bonus content offered is pretty generous in my opinion. I've seen some CEs that only give a few wallpapers and bonus chapters that last ten minutes. With Bloody Mary we get plenty of music, wallpapers, concept art, achievements, collectibles (that have a nice little touch because they are intertwined into the story) and a lengthy bonus chapter.
By far this is my new favorite from Elephant. This game is well worth the money; even though I bought it during a sale, I still would not have complained had I paid the full price. Perfect way to spend my Friday the thirteenth.
I recommend this game!

*Demo Only* This one was quite amusing. I laughed at the developer's attempt at being scary or frightening. Their efforts were hokey, silly, and way over the top, which made it oddly enjoyable for me. This game was so cornball that I almost wonder if the developers did it on purpose.
There were plenty of puzzles and HO scenes, some were familiar, some slightly different from the norm. At least the developers tried to inject variety by offering several different types of HO scenes (morphing objects, finding multiples of the same type of object, etc.).
In opposition to what others have said, I actually like the type of graphics displayed here. I don't really dig the hand-drawn art that looks like oil paintings, so the totally crisp, computer generated look of this game was fine with me. Sound effects were a little dramatic and goofy as well–but again–I thought this was funny rather than annoying, but I can see how it may wear thin further into the game. I turned the music off straight away as I normally do in games, so I can't comment on that (although if the music is anything like the other elements, I would imagine it's very dramatic and unnecessary).
The story was nothing we have not seen before. As one other member wrote, there is a very heavy dose of the occult and dark magic involved, so for those who find this sort of stuff unappealing, it's probably best to skip this one. And definitely do NOT let young children play, for there are some moments that could be too much for the little ones (i.e, there's a ghost who appears and his head falls of; there's a creepy crying infant walking upright down a hall, which was even a little disturbing to see as an adult!).
Peeves: No map; the journal kept malfunctioning; and the inventory bar stays visible for too long. Biggest (possibly game-breaking) peeve for me: I arrived at a scene and discovered there was another scene if I backed up. I can't stand this in games. It should always be that when you back up, you find yourself in the scene you were in a moment ago, not an entirely new one. It just throws off all orientation.
If it's true that this is the developer's first born, then hopefully the next one will be a little better polished and can actually be taken seriously...especially if horror is their goal. I'd recommend this one if you really cannot find anything else worthwhile, and you have a couple punch card codes laying around.
I recommend this game!

Everything about this game was very appealing except for the fact that it does not play nice with my MacBook Air, specifically the track pad. Normally when using the track pad I do not have to actually depress it when clicking on something, but for this game I had to, and it started driving me nuts. Call me lazy, but I'm so used to the track pad effortlessly responding to the slightest tap, so the fact that it didn't work well with Nightmare Realm was pretty much game-breaking and annoying. Other than this, the game was great in all aspects and I agree with most of what everyone else who has reviewed it positively has written.
I recommend this game!

This game is probably best for those who are A) into literature and possibly self-described history buffs B) lovers of stories that have multiple, complex lines. While I do appreciate these elements, I'm used to HOG stories that are a little less...complicated. Thankfully, the journal you keep in-game is pretty detailed, so of course you can always go back and get your bearings. The journal acted as my saving grace, for the story would change abruptly at the drop of a hat and there were multiple characters to keep tabs on. I have never seen so many characters in one HOG. Things got really hairy when fiction started intertwining with the game's reality. But, it's a matter of taste: Some people like this type of complexity, others, not so much. I'm of the latter, and I think an engaging story does not necessarily have to be so involved. But enough about that...
Graphics are excellent; the sound effects and music are appropriate and contributed very well to the atmosphere. Certain scenes are highly immersive, and I admit that this game is one of the first that had me jumpy at times. But, I also use earbuds so every thunder clap and crash of lightning can be very startling.
HO scenes include aid in the form of a trusty raven to guide you along: Throughout the game you can collect ravens to go towards your hint button quota. When you call on your raven for help in an HO, you're shown a silhouette of the item in question. During puzzles the raven becomes your standard skip button. Outside of puzzles and HO scenes, the raven can also help you with discerning were your inventory items go. These hints were sometimes elusive, so I found myself relying on them less and less; it was better for me to just exit the game and check out the walkthrough, personally. One weird element: When you're finished in an HO scene, the game does not automatically back you out. At first this was confusing for a moment because I thought there was more to do. Alas, no, I was simply done and had to let it go! We're so used to HO games closing that scene for us, so I had this weird unshakeable feeling of incompletion the first couple times this happened. Even later on in the game, I still had this nagging feeling of "what if" there was something I left unfinished but I knew this wasn't the case.
The achievements are a nice touch, and I especially enjoyed searching for the four-leaf clovers in order to unlock the achievement of Unlimited HO scenes at the end of the game. I wanted to kick myself, however, when I found that I collected all but one (I believe there are 63 clovers total, but only 50 are needed to unlock the Unlimited HO scenes).
Even though my only qualms are the complicated story line and the raven system, I still found myself staying awake long into the night to wrap-up this game. I say play this if you are looking to be challenged with minimal hand-holding, and enjoy an in-depth story with many facets, twists and turns.
I recommend this game!

This game was such a breath of fresh air. Sometimes I hit a wall with the HOGs, and just need something a little different. The Witch's Prison fixed that dilemma.
The story was awesome and felt as if it could transfer to film. Most game stories just can't do that, as they are either too hokey or just unstructured. The story here is best summed up as a supernatural-themed-government-conspiracy, which are my faves so I was immediately hooked. There's a nice blend of tongue-in-cheek humor and creepiness. The game even pokes fun at the HOG genre: You get to play a mini hidden object scene after hacking the antagonist's computer. Got a good chuckle out of that. My guess is the developers--as gamers themselves--probably craved an adventure that doesn't take itself too serious, and allows room for realism and humor. I found that some of the dialogue were things I would have likely said to myself in real life if put in that situation as well. The writers achieved a perfect balance of humor with horror, and neither element goes so far as to take away from the other.
The graphics were good for being seemingly hand-drawn. I'm one of those who likes crisp, life-like but completely computer generated graphics and live actors, but surprisingly this game was lovely to look at with a comic/storybook feel to it. The sound effects were lacking at times. We are so used to every single action in our games making some sort of noise so when I found a puzzle that was totally silent, I checked to make sure I didn't accidentally mute my earbuds. The music was appropriate, fitting, and unobtrusive; just a little bit of a floating piano melody that felt a little nostalgic.
The puzzles...well...I'll just say there were a few that made me feel like a complete ding-dong. I'm not into the strategy based puzzles were you have to think 5 moves ahead--they just make my head scramble. In this game there is a puzzle for every type of thinker though, so chances are you will find the one that suits your abilities and gives you complete satisfaction. There were some puzzles that we've seen before; same concept just different materials.
I'm hoping this developer comes out with another game soon! There is a hint at a sequel (at least that's how I took it) so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I haven't gone through every single game here at BF, but I'm guessing there are none like this one. If you are a die hard HO gamer who enjoys the supernatural but need something different (and don't mind a dose of humor mixed in) you must try out this game!
I recommend this game!

I'm one who is picky about voice acting in games. If it's bad, it cuts down the immersion factor. The voice actress for the main character was downright horrible in her attempt at a Southern accent. Grated on my nerves. The others were lame too. I would have given 4 stars if it weren't for that. The graphics were okay, HO scenes were decent. At times the gameplay was illogical and just didn't flow well; backtracking became distracting. The story was alright. I like occult-themed games and this one was interesting.
I don't recommend this game.

This one will be put in my top five favorites. The graphics were great, puzzles and HO scenes were good and the story was interesting. There's a spooky little jester that pops up every now and then which added to the weird/creepy circus atmosphere. I enjoyed the last part of the game (I won't give it away here) but I will say it's a nice departure from the usual HO games where you basically stay in the same "setting". I will say this: If you have a marked phobia of clowns (especially the evil looking ones) it's probably best to stay away from this game.
I recommend this game!
