When I first saw there was a new game in the Phantasmat series, my heart skipped a beat. How exciting it was to see there was a continuation of one of my all time favorite games. Then my enthusiasm sank a bit to read some of the reviews and to see that ERS was the new developer after taking over the franchise.
I was immediately skeptical because ERS has pretty much become known for its non innovative, formula, paint-by-the-numbers game play. I still wanted to give it a shot since the original Phantasmat was so phenomenal.
However, my worries proved true during the demo. It was your very typical ERS game where pretty much every game looks like the last one.
To summarize it in one word: 'Meh.'
And the mini games were atrociously easy. Just too bland and dull.
The residents of Bitterford, Maine have fallen prey to a terrible curse. It’s up to you to unravel the series of mysterious events that led to the town’s downfall and uncover the evil that was responsible.

If this game didn't have the MCF title attached, I would say it was excellent. I see it is getting bad reviews here but as a stand alone game, it was actually well done. The graphics were incredible, loved the incorporation of real actors, gameplay and plot were nothing to write home about but it was fun enough. I give it 4 stars to be fair.
However, as an MCF game, it was way off the mark. It just didn't have that 'MCF nostalgic feel' to it. I missed the typewriter sound effects, the glittering sparkles, the old detective automobile, and the general feel and graphics of the MCF games. I do understand that BFG wants to mix things up and they don't want to issue the same game every year. But this was so different that it didn't feel like it was even part of the MCF franchise.
All of the past MCF games left me OBSESSED with the game and I couldn't put them down until I finished them all three times over, won all achievements, found all hidden objects, etc. However, this time, I really didn't care if I finished or not and would often leave the game to run errands or work on housework. I even closed it before running off to find the morphing objects.
It just didn't feel right. I'm a little bummed right now. The franchise is so famous that many of us wait all year for the release and we get all of our work done in advance, buy snacks, and put the whole day on hold as our 'MCF day!' But this was really disappointing.
So I will give it 4 stars- it definitely doesn't deserve the 1 and 2 stars it is getting from several others but it doesn't deserve 5 stars either. Consider me a sad fishy. But it was at least playable.
Big Fish Needs to Just Delete This Game From Their Selection.

After gutting the game of all playability (mini puzzles, object usage, etc.), and chopping it up into three useless segment, Big Fish would service their customers better by just deleting this game from their inventory.
To offer an example a customer may relate to, imagine the Ravenhearst games being re-released with all the hidden object scenes removed, the mini puzzles deleted, and no items to find or use. Then, all you do is wander around and talk to the Ravenhearst ghosts. THEN the game is divided up into three parts, making you pay full price for each segment of walking around talking to Emma, Rose, the twins, etc.
So that is what this game is like. It is TERRIBLE. You'll essentially pay $21 to walk around and talk to characters in the game because the puzzles, objects, and challenge has been removed.
