THIS GAME HAD THE BEST COLLECTABLE I HAVE EVER PLAYED..... IT HAD A PURPOSE, AND I REALLY FELT REWARDED!
With the release of the new MCF #12 Key to R., I'd realized I am a couple MCF behind...so I just finished both CE I own of MCF Escape from Ravenh, & this one Dire G Sacred G. waiting for the new one to come out in SE.
First of all... this is BY FAR the LONGEST game I have ever played. The SE took me-5 hrs, Bonus Play took-2 hrs 42 min, and Altern ending took- 1 hr 15min for the complete play gametime = 9- NINE hours! the bonus alone is around 4 hours between both bonus options. /which is 1 hr short of the main game! So for this ALONE... if you enjoyed the SE and are deciding to go back for a replay,,,,, this one is WELL WORTH YOUR PENNY!! I will talk more about the bonus play in a minute. But for now, these are the other things this CE has to offer.
I actually cringed when I saw the first cut scene with hunters holding guns. I've put this game off for a long time because I am a huge animal lover and not a fan of guns or traps in games. I am SO GLAD I played this game though, because the story isn't quite what it appeared to be. No animals are hurt, but one "spirit bear" is shot in the 1st Bonus play... -- yet he lives instead-- in the Alternate ending, way better. After I played the demo a bit, I realized the PUZZLE PIECES YOU COLLECT ARE FOR 4 JIGSAW PUZZLES YOU PUT TOGETHER IN THE SE. As you complete each puzzle you can SET A SCREENSAVER TO YOUR DESKTOP! Seriously.... I felt like I had collected and collected items from all these games for this very moment!! They had a purpose folks!! IT WAS SOOOOOO SMART AND SOOOO FUN to keep putting together the jigsaw picture so I could set the next screensaver. This is BY FAR the best collectable I've had in a game. The other Collectable being - I think there were 9 houses that morphed in some scenes and at the end there is a page for them where you can turn on/off the lights in the model houses, or a string of xmas lights, or car lights etc. very cute.
1. 5 SCREENSAVERS: - That double as collectable puzzle pieces. I ADORED this little hunt and was THRILLED when I thought they ended at 4 SS at the end of the SE, only to find there was a whole NEW puzzle in the Bonus Play! Sadly, though, I MISSED a piece and could not go back to get it when credits rolled after Bonus play #1 ended. SO. BE SURE TO LOOK FOR ALL THOSE PIECES BEFORE CREDITS using the WTG before the game end!! So I guess if I want the last Screensaver I will have to play the first bonus play again --which took me almost 3 hours to begin with! These also save to your computer's doc file
2. A 78 pg. /6 chapter/ and a bonus chapter Walkthrough Guide. Chapters 1-6/are 49 pgs & make up the Standard Edition. The 1st bonus chapter is from pgs.49-63/ where the puzzle pieces are from pgs 64-66/ Models you collect pg 67 and the 2nd bonus play or Alternate ending pgs 68-78.
3. 15 WALLPAPERS that save to ur doc file- but 2 remain locked until bonus completed- geez DEV... PLEASE LET US HAVE ALL GOODIES UP FRONT!!
4. 12 CONCEPT ART- saveable with Elephant Logo.
5. 5 MUSIC TRACKS- that save. I only noticed 2.... the typical MCF theme, and a song they used in the HOS that was driving me crazy.... I could not stand that HO song! for all Ho games it seemed to be the same song!
6. 10 Video cut scenes- but 2 are still locked after SE, need to complete bonus to get see them all again.
7. MORE ON THE BONUS PLAY- First of all, I don't feel the Standard edition ended making much sense. I feel like the "Alternate ending" your given may have been a Chapter 7 at one point for the SE and removed. The Alternate ending makes the entire convoluted story make sense. I just felt the SE storyline was a little discombobulated without that ending.
SO. ~IF YOU CAN~ PLAY ALT.ENDING- on the upper R in bonus BEFORE you play the BONUS PLAY. Because the bonus play story doesn't even make sense UNTIL you play the ALT ENDING- which I wish I'd played first to tie up the loose ends of the Standard edition.
CHAPTER 6 in the SE is absolutely gorgeous and most if not all the Alternated ending is replayed in this area. Most of the MG and HOs are ALSO SE repeats. You only have Bjorns squirrel once in the Alt ending where-as he is an adorable little helper ALL through the Bonus Play. You realize, or remember that is... your nemesis Alister from MCF Fates Carnival is in this game too...but I had forgotten him until his connection was mentioned in the Alternate ending.
8. BONUS PLAY- again, if possible play it AFTER the alternate ending. One is one the top of the Left column in Bonus and the Alt ending addl. play is on the Right column.
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL BONUS' I'VE EVER PLAYED, and trust me, I have played A LOT!
If you play Alternate Bonus Ending first, it is a complete ending to the Standard Edition.
Then go on to the Bonus Play and you start out, it is 4 hours later, you are in your, literally, frozen car and find out there is another evil doer in town! He is called the Hermit, and you must find him so he stops controlling the minds of some of the previous characters we've met in the standard edition.
There are 14 new or revised to look new areas of play, I counted 10 new mini-games and only 3 new HOS. I wish that had been reversed. I WOULD BET, IF BIG FISH POLLED ITS CUSTOMERS, MOST OF US WOULD RATHER HAVE MORE HOS IN A HO GAME THEN THE MINIGAMES. I'm not quite sure why the genre of HO game ends up now a days being a MG- Adventure. But I digress.
I just can't tell you how gorgeous this game gets from Chapter 6 right on through for another approx.3 hours of bonus. It continues snowing but you are mostly in the area of the mist walkers turf which was just great.
I would have been really bummed if the Alt. Ending had been the only bonus play due to the repetition.... but you get every pennies worth in this CE.... because this Chapter /and it IS a Chapter or more/ is REALLY NEEDED to make this entire game, including the standard edition, to make sense.
9. Acheiv. Page... I personally feel Acheiv. are a waste of time in CE. Could care less. But for those of you who do.... I really don't know if completing these unlocks more or not.... I never completed. But-- one neat thing that is different-- Geez, you really do have to LOVE ELEPHANT FOR CE DETAIL.... There is a gorgeous little area Achievements are collected-- like in a Stonehenge picture. When you click on each Achievm. it has a little reward icon such as, one was a bronze owl, and it come up close for inspection when you click it.
DEAR ELEPHANT GAMES,
Holy Toledo I amsuch a fan of yours!! You did justice to the MCF, such a baby of Big Fish and you should be so proud! I wanted to take the time and thank you for 9 full hours of my life collecting those little jigsaw pieces and one by one going back to create my 5, count them, 5 screensavers!! I know this is stupid, but I feel like I won the lotto when I saw the first jigsaw turn into a SETTING for my desktop. YOU ALL GIVE SO much attention, detail, and LOVE to your games. I had such a blast in this GORGEOUS world of a game you created. Each and every one of you gets hugs from this Big Fish fan! Hats off to the Voice actors here, all A+. Tim Simmons, the voice of The Hermit, and Bjorn was SO WELL DONE!!// yes, I do read the credits....
btw... I recently saw one DEV add picts of the game Creators in the credits with what area of game they worked on and it WILL make people watch those credits.
FINALLY.... PLEASE ELEPHANT.... BRING US MORE LIKE THIS FOR COLLECTIONS, the jigsaw, to Screensavers!/ Geez, if you did, I WOULD HAVE TO BUY EVERY collectors Ed made like this!! Morphs in each scene are also fun instead of the larger statues.
Thanks again Elephant!! And...
Thank you Big Fish Games!
I recommend this game!

********based on full se and bonus gameplay***********
I initially reviewed the CE in 2011. I actually love these games so much I keep notes as I'm playing....
The intro. cut scene is great. Quickly you find out you are in a haunted town of Vermont, and its beautiful autumn. You come upon a covered bridge that actually reminds me of one in Stowe VT called, Emily's bridge, which is haunted in real life.
I included in my notes, that games similar to this-- from that time period-- are:
1. Dark Dimensions City of Fog- also set in autumn--and
2. Voodoo Whisperer, Curse of a Legend
The bonus play includes you, the detective, are searching for Emily!! I paid the $13.99 after the demo and bought this game when it was first out full price and I've notated how happy I was I did.... it has an 11 page bonus section game play in the CE edition that is really worth it.
So. for any of you, that are like me, and loved a game, and wonder if its worth a replay as CE..... this one is definitely one you want all of.
The second in this series is also wonderful, Mists of Ravenhood. You play in a big camp-like park in that game also a blast.
Thank you Artifax Mundi! I have always been a huge fan!
I recommend this game!

I agree with Granny_Gruff's review almost verbatim.
***********based on demo only***********
For starters if this HAD HAD a screensaver I actually would have bought the CE. I'm not sure if I maybe expected too
much as I have bought and played ALL of this series, not just demo's.
The last 2 installments have had a screensaver. MCF- Shadow Lake had 3 awesome ones, that actually stayed with your computer even after the game was removed!
Ingenious really, screen savers because what BETTER WAY TO ADVERTISE, TO BUY THE NEXT INSTALLMENT.... It is a constant reminder that you liked the game enough to buy the CE last time and to await the next installment stays fresh in your mind! And the Dire Grove installment last year had a puzzle that turned into a screensaver as an added delight!
I was also somewhat bummed the graphics weren't crisp in this installment of MCF. They are more hand drawn or maybe its some kind of filter. Compared to MCF Return to Ravenhearst and Shadow Lake the graphics just weren't as good.... I do play on a 12 x 21" monitor so the smaller windows were clearer and the main screen was degrading on me a bit; and it didn't in the previous installments of MCF. The lighting and special effects made things better though, but all in all the entire demo is played in the rain.... and it just felt depressing.
THINGS I LOVED: The attention to detail and the nod to the previous games was great! It made us "long-time Big fishers" super happy to relate to the other games this way! ex, The Madame Fate bobble head and the metal segmented bird, the twins. I liked how they presented Ravenhearst's grounds from a new angle while keeping it all familiar.
BEHIND THE SCENES- for CE. I wish it hadn't been completely locked but I love to see the awesome, creative people that design these games especially if they do it in video form. Video and pictures would be perfect.
I LOVED the hidden object games in this demo, it had all you could want, but I would have doubled up the HOS and not as many minigames -especially the long multiple ones.
All in all it was a very good game. Did it blow me out of the water? Nope.... some of the games coming out now are truly blowing my mind with the level of thought.... For example, I played a game recently and the screen got bombed removing the toolbar and you had to seek and find the toolbar items.
Again, this review is only based on the demo so possibly the rest of the game will knock my socks off. I'll review the SE again, after I've completed the game.
I recommend this game!

This is a copy of my CE review for this game.
BASED ON FULL SE GAME & BONUS.
**********MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS**********
The storyline could have been really good, but I felt it was kindof all over the place. You play as Amber's father and each time there is a new "fear" you call out to your daughter and she ignores you only to end up needing your help. At one place at the end of SE you are in a tigers pen and Amber shuts the door on you! This game would have been WAY better with segmented- fear stories assigned to different characters as we see in
Redemption Cemetary- Childhood fears- If you like this SM you might like this one too.
The SE took me 4hr 30min and the end stands on its own.
Bonus play took me 1hr 5 min TOTAL GP- 5HR 35MIN
BONUS CONTENT: XTRA GAMEPLAY- that takes a bit over an hour. ALL the areas are NEW PLAY! The story is a bit weird. You are Amber's father again, and you continue chasing Amber. There is a Blue smoke monster created by Henry Cromby and you find out he made the amusement park you play in bonus- 500 years ago.
STRAT GUIDE- There is a 50pg wtg that contains 6 chapters -including bonus level- SE is from pages 3-40 and XPLAY is from pgs 41-49. When you open a pic you have to reclick it to put it back, which is kindof annoying.
CUTSCENE REPLAY- is found when you open the map -note the map is also not as easy to get to as most games I've played.
5 WALLPAPERS- each one is a 12 piece jigsaw you put together. 1 is of Mellissa in sanatorium, 1 of Amusement park scene from SE, 1 of carosel with the fear device, 1 of Arthur in graveyard, and 1 of Amber in the bird cornfield near the jack o lantern.
18 PICS OF THE DEVELOPERS STARS- They are at an amusement park and I call them stars because they are to me! We love to meet the creators, so I loved this!
6 SAVEABLE MUSIC TRACKS- the Arthur track is beautiful!
20 concept art- all in secondary smaller windows, not logo'd and not saveable
Re-playable- 8 minigames
MELISSA'S WALL- This is the page devoted to the collectables you pick up throughout the game, and each one is a diary like notation made by Melissa.
DEVELOPERS:::::::
I wish they had done without Melissa's wall and given us at least one SCREENSAVER that stays with the computer as a reminder you liked the game enough to buy the CE last time...so you probably will want the next segment! A great sales reminder!
RE BONUS PLAY- ALL THE AREAS ARE NEW! I love when DEV do this -and in fact I remember Sable Maze-Sullivan River's bonus was one of the best bonus's I've played & was as good as the game!
These are the NEW AREAS OF PLAY on the MAP you will play:
1. Carnival center
2. Roller coaster platform- mini gm pulling levers up
3. Roller coaster tracks- HOP-silhouette- you play it twice here, once progressive & MG AKA mini-game: rotate pieces to create a picture.
4. Whirl around-MG press buttons in sequence, MG adjust rings on a maze, MG match shapes to wrenches-fun
5. Whirl around- back/MG pull ropes so they don't overlap- skipped it.
6.Mystery House entrance-MG light 6 parts- but 1 effects the nxt., MG Toggle hands on a clock- it can't be skipped and this one annoyed me.
7. Mystery house foyer- adorable Siamese-himal. cat! and a HOP you play twice, once progressive & once list
8. Haunted house- 2nd floor hall
9. Facility back entrance
10. Dollhouse- MG you grow a FAST flower
11. Volcano room- too weird, there is a cave inside the house. MG place blocks to fit an area
12. Fear machine room- MG- turn arrows to face up-1 effects the next
A pretty please NOTE TO DEVELOPERS: In chapter 2 there is a metal trap. Please don't put those in casual games!
All in all I am glad I bought the CE of this game. The extra play was worth it.
I loved the bonus's end. Well done!
Hugs for all the effort that went into this!
I recommend this game!

I am usually one that prefers the creepier paranormal type games but for a change,
This game is a real beauty. It is designed (as others have stated) for the younger set, but it is so beautiful and easily flowing, that adults will probably love it too.
IF YOU LIKED THIS GAME..... TRY THESE.....
1. Detective Quest- The crystal slipper -by Elephant gms
2012.
2. Awakening: Moonfell Wood-by Boomzap 2011
3. Unfinished Tales: Illicit Love by Elephant 10-2012
4. and of course the other 2 in the Dark Romance series by
Domini
Note: These games are somewhat older, but the feel of the game is the same as this and all of them are TRULY GORGEOUS!
There are bright blue skies, flower gardens and flowering trees galore and adorable animals in every scene.
The portal task map is a work of art all by itself....and if you want to re-watch those cutscenes this is where they can be replayed. Characters notes are also in the maps area.
COLLECT- statues, stained glass pieces and feathers. Each has its own page, and the feathers are used to buy things for a bedroom you can "dress up". Kids will love this feature. I would rather have had a screensaver to save to my computer as a reminder of how beautiful the game is and to buy the next segment out of the game.
In one spot the baddy in the game creates a wall of water which covers the scene and fills your monitor which makes your monitor look like an aquarium because of the adorable goldfish that floats through! Such innovation and perfectly executed.
One of the minigames is 3 separate scenes where you match adorable animals. I loved it.
This game is like playing in a happy little painting, and the time spent playing it just leaves you in a good mood, like seeing a great movie. Well done! Thank you Domini, and BFG!!!
I recommend this game!

BASED ON DEMO ONLY............
This game did become a buyer for me, the SE version. I would have purchased the CE if the goodies were better.
IT NEEDED A SCREENSAVER! HINT HINT ha ha
I loved the sound effects in this game. So many of the newer games now have this one new "go to" sound effect and thank God it was lacking in this one, considering how much you hear it!
I loved the HOS in this game, old school list, w some addl. steppers. In fact I found most things were done great here, VO, movies, the diary holding the games storyline, how the characters speak, right down to a perfect portal task map with similarly perfect hint. Plus items in inventory.
A couple of the mini-games I just loved, especially one with a fish tank with a mean Big fish. It was adorable and fun.
I have to personally give kudos to the person assigned ARTWORK in the "storybook series" where you find several different items in the sketch (like 5 fleur de lis etc.).... At first it is black and white hand drawn pencil-- and being an artist myself,,,, this ENTIRE area is just OFF THE HOOK!!! I have played A LOT of these games and I have never seen more perfectly executed sketches! BRAVO!!!
The pictures are cross sketched and once you find the items the sketch fills with color and a VO tells more story. If you haven't played this game yet look for the one with find 5 spears, and the lighter cross sketch of horses in the background IS GORGEOUS. Geez those little buggers were so well hidden!!
NOTE TO DEVELOPERS
My only problem was the standard size of this game looks to fit around a 15" computer. I play most of these on a large 27" monitor and the graphics degrade on the larger monitor.
I would assume the hardcore Big fishers out there that play these games every day for many hours have the larger monitors for HO like I do........ so it would be great if DEV could start out with LARGER SCREENSIZE basic size of game with this in mind. I couldn't adjust it in the options.
This a beautifully done, quality game! It is evident many blood, sweat and tears went into to create it. Thank you Bigfish!!
I recommend this game!

THIS IS THE REVIEW I DID FOR THE CE VERSION.... FOR ALL YOU SE PEOPLE THAT WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS MISSING....
**********CONTAINS SPOILERS*************
I LOVED this edition of Haunted Hotel! This gets an A+ across the board. They used a lot of voice actors and cutscenes to push the story and both were PERFECT!
The attention to detail here is so well done. The story was so great, where you get to play an aspect of the story that all comes together. BRAVO!
SE took me 3hrs 15min. The end is great an doesn't depend on the CE's end.
CE: took me 1hr. TOTAL GAMEPLAY: 4hr 15min
BONUS CONTENT:
1 SCREENSAVER.... As you know I LOVE screensavers and this one doesn't disappoint! It has a backdrop of the orig. hotel scene. In the middle an ornate mirror has an image of the judge's (Esrail)ghost which explodes into mirror shards that each have a characters image! LOVE IT! Worthy of buying the CE ALL BY ITSELF! (after the screensvr goes into your docum. folder, R clk folder, SEND TO your dvdrw drive and save it to a disc, so you can use it again#
7 WALLPAPERS -almost all of them have a shattered mirror, a bummer for me was, after you complete the SE, there is still a locked wallpaper you get after you finish bonus. This is also true with ALL the CE content.
I think most Bigfishers would agree, we want to install ALL our goodies Ce content AS we are playing the game, not after! DEVELOPERS, PLEASE DON'T KEEP LOCKED CONTENT TO THE END!
Concept art- 8 pics #I actually prefer before/after if we get concept art to see the cool people that made the game.
MUSIC- also beautifully done.... there are 5 saveable tracks.
Bonus play: Took me 1hr. This time you play the same person as SE, but you are responding to a crashed boat on the hotel's island....and your job is to hunt for the survivors.
NEW AREAS OF PLAY::::: There are 7 areas we play on the map. 3 scenes were from SE but they have been updated -pier, porch, & garage-but they have a new feel. The brand new areas are -backyard, basement, rope bridge, and waterfall- I played 7 minigames and 2 hos during bonus ply.
CE has a 36page.STRAT GUIDE #6 chapters) + Bonus play. SE pgs 2-26 and Bonus pgs 27-33.
Acheiv & Coll. Throughout the CE you collect 22 anitiques. and 10 game statues. Each has its own display room and each item comes up for close examination when you click it...with a little bit of information on the item or person. This was beautifully done, with a lot of attention to detail.
There is also an Alternate ending.... which I havn't played yet. The first ending was great!
I absolutely adored this HH and can't wait for more! Thank you Big Fish Games! And hugs to all those at Elephant that gave me so many hours of fun!! I adore you guys!!
I recommend this game!
