Far too many reviews lately have mentioned "boring" "lazy" "dull" etc etc...
And yet the game, when based on its own merits, looking past the personal expectations and over-the-top expectations, what you get is a fantastic fun to play game!
When you plug in the game just to play a game, you actually enjoy it! When you play a game, not to review it, but to have fun, that is what you actually get!
Yes, some of the games are not fun or as good as others, that is to be expected, not some sort of big surprise or result of devs.
When you have played 100's of games, your expectations are far beyond a realistic expectation and ratings become useless to those of us who just like to have fun! Especially to new players!
THIS GAME IS FUN and one of the best in some time.
I hope to see more like this. And I hope to see more realistic ratings based on the game itself so that when I come to buy a game, there is an honest rating that I can measure it by. Something I have not been able to do for nearly a year now!!!
Put on the headphones, turn off the lights and have fun! That is what this game is all about and you will enjoy it, just as much as I have.
The residents of Bitterford, Maine have fallen prey to a terrible curse. It’s up to you to unravel the series of mysterious events that led to the town’s downfall and uncover the evil that was responsible.
I realize this review may never be seen and that the game may only get a few purchases here and there but I wanted to speak on it. I pulled it up to play it again and as I was, I was telling my wife she should too. Why? Because the game is UNIQUE!
Yes, if you go into a game placing expectations and have super high standards (which admittedly is not always a bad thing!) then you may be disappointed. If, like myself, you thoroughly enjoy the MCF series, but wanted more of the exact same thing then you are going to be in for a shock.
I enjoy being surprised. I enjoy starting up a game and being presented with something that is different, unique and has a style completely of its own!
Now since plenty of other reviews are very revealing, I feel I can say a few things without ruining it with spoilers. Lea Thompson could have done a better job here. I was disappointing with a professional actress not being believable. As you may notice, I am a forgiving person since I still rated it a 5. That is because the overall 2.5 is very misleading!
Talking with real people is very cool. The story line is much better than others are saying.
Yes... the puzzles are repeated. But the HO scenes are very cool because they almost reminded me of the early days of Hidden Object games like "Amazon" that made it difficult to find. While I am a huge fan of easy games because i am nto a big fan of playing a game using the hint button over 30% o the time... I am also glad to see "hidden" objects stand up to the title! Hidden! Well blended in and takes a little time to discover. Not screamingly hard like the games of old, but enough to make the puzzle last more than 1 minute.
The map is very good.... jumping from scene to scene was super easy. Not being able to jump to rooms in the scene was a bit disappointing but I also realize the map would not be the same if that were included.
We put the headphones on and played for 3 days. I can understand why some would not want to rate it a 5. But a 1 or 2 rating on a game like this is way off base, not fair to the nature of the game and can only come from having placed a high expectation on something they wanted instead of allowing room for inventive, creative and uniqueness.
I like that latter and can appreciate a game for what it is... even if it is part of a series, it can also make a great stand alone. It has excellent atmosphere and on 'easy' still had to utilize about 5% hints.
We LOVED it! Because we did not go in with any expectations except to play a game.
When I saw the early reviews at 3 x 5 stars I thought, "OK, why not. So I paid full price instead of waiting for a sale.
WORTH EVERY PENNY!
I don't like to ruin the games by saying everything that is involved, but this game will not disappoint. It has a wonderful variety of stages, story-lines, and puzzles that range from easy to hard. New things not in other games and the atmosphere of it takes you in and doesn't let you go by throwing in something ridiculously goofy.
I measure the quality of a game by how involved it gets me into it. It is like nothing else is around and I want to know what is going to happen next or what the next move is.
I have rated a few games and I am picky when it comes to overall quality. I am forgiving in areas, but there was no need to be forgiving here, at all.
Lately, I have been timid about buying a game after its 4th or 5th Title release. For the most part because of the reviews it gets. I know the HE Title and HE (Hidden Expedition) is the very reason I even found Big Fish Games and own over 1000 games - Yes.... I am addicted... Hello, my name is Blake... and I love Big Fish Games.... HI BLAKE!!!!
As for me, I do not think it is fair to drop a star rating on a game, especially if it is good, because you played a previous game and are comparing it to another game or because of a familiar review that's been seen a lot: "same ole, same ole" or "tired ole story-line."! Yes, I expect the top-level designers to hold up to a medium standard of game design, BUT <--- I can't make it bold or big so just imagine a REALLY BIG BUT! (no further comment) - BUT! I also know that if one of the games just happen to rock my world then I am always going to be a slight drop the next game because those can be rare and if they were all that good, the prices would have to go up! So, I have to admit, I am happy that is not the case.
But my point... is this: Some reviews have held me back from buying some games because they are being compared to other games. Yet, this time, I disregarded the reviews because I wanted to buy a new game and HE was there for the taking. I AM SO GLAD I DID!
This game was NOT long enough... That means I never wanted it to stop. It was plenty long and even the extra bonus game was a decent run. Graphics, Sound, Story-Line, Difficulty were all just my style.
I am sort of easy to please, so that may not make me a great game rater; but it does allow me to speak for those of us who just like playing games and can stand a few "doesn't make a lot of sense" here or there. I am also just fine with the mini-games and finding morphing items to not be at such a hard level, because when they are, I am just going to end up pressing skip anyway and that is disappointing to always have to do that.
Most times, I do not have an extra half hour reading all the reviews on all the games to choose from when I am ready to buy one so I use the stars and see how many 5's or 4's or 3's etc that a game has received... and look to see if there is a greater balance of good than mediocre or just flat out bad.
This game, and a couple of others as of late, that have not been getting more 5's because the reviewers are bored, is a definite 5 and I highly recommend it to all those who love playing games, who look forward to the HE games, and who like being able to complete the whole game without using a hint!
