I LOVED the Awakenings series. It was one of the first games I purchased when I joined Big Fish Games 11 years ago. I have been so sad that the older games just don't work much of the time on the newer computers and so to have a chance to play this game again and to have it updated to boot, is just so exciting for me. It show just how angry people are in the world today to see the difference in reviews as so beautifully pointed out by Sunnyglow. This game was overwhelmingly popular when I purchased it back in the day and having been an avid player of Big Fish Games over the last 11 years, I can't say that there has been a whole lot released that I enjoy more than this series. I guess I just am one of those people that tries to see the positive in the things I do...
A mysterious fortune teller has foreseen her demise at midnight this very day. Can you find the soul who seeks to kill Madame Fate? You be the detective.
This was the best game ever created. However, it no longer works on any computers, PC or Mac, that have been updated within the last five years. It is appalling that they still sell it. And they have made it crystal clear they will do nothing to make it playable for anyone that has a computer that is even remotely up to date. Truly horrible customer service caused the demise of a great game!!
Unless you have a REALLY old computer do not purchase this game. It is apparently no longer compatible on any computers that have been updated within the last five years. It WAS one of the greatest games ever created. But no one has bothered to try to help update it so it can still be played.
I think in the last 9 years that I have been getting games from Big Fish, I have submitted maybe 5 reviews. It is not something that I have done much of. However, I recently replayed this game for the first time since I had purchased it many years ago and I was stunned at the superb artistry and extraordinary level of play that I found in a game that has been around for a long time. I was shocked at how long the game was, not only the normal game play but the bonus game. And I am saying all of this having played it on the easiest level of play. I can't even imagine how challenging this game would have been on a more difficult level. If you are someone that wants a challenge, a huge variety of mini games as well a wonderful HOPA, then this is the game for you. Others have gone through the specifics, but I just wanted to put my two cents in! I intend to replay every single MCF game in this series. I was so thrilled to see in my "already purchased" list that I did, in fact, own all of them. Pretty excited to take on this HOPA "binge"!
I have been playing games from BF for 8 years now but due to the fact that most games are reviewed by people that have written hundreds of reviews and usually do a great job at it, I almost never submit a review. However, after playing this game in its entirety, I simply had to review it. Everything about this game was new and exciting. It really was a truly unique experience. Although I always buy CE versions of games, I often don't play all of the extras, particularly if I haven't been completely satisfied by the initial game. Not only did I do all of the multitude of extras, I even watched the credits to complete my achievements. The story was wonderful and really was a head scratcher. The way that the characters worked and allowed the player to switch who they were playing as, was not necessarily a new twist but was done really well. And the HOPs were fantastic. They were all different and interesting enough that I played all of them again after the initial game and the bonus games were complete. But the truly unique aspect to this game was the way that the souvenir extra was done. I won't spoil it for those who haven't played it, but, trust me, it was a souvenir set up I had never seen before and really enjoyed. If you are an old HOP gamer like myself, believe me when I tell you that you will truly be happy you invested in this game!
I played the demo only because there was no way I was going to buy this game. Even though I have hundreds of games purchased from BFG in the last 6 years, I rarely write a review. I feel that, for the most part, someone usually captures the way I feel about a game and don't have much to add. However, in the case of the Spirits of Mystery games, I just couldn't stay quiet.
This was my favorite series for a long time. And even though I thought they were getting a little darker along the way, I thought that they at least kept some of the fantasy and fun along with the darkness. This time they went waaay overboard. This is as dark and evil of game as I have come across in awhile. I have no problem with those types of games being done. But, I do have a problem when it happens with a series that has not been that way in the past. The fact that a game where people are dying on a conveyor belt and there is a substantial amount of blood and gore but no warning at all is really unforgivable. And to use a series that has been relatively lighthearted and fantastic and turn it into a horror story is completely unnecessary. There are plenty of other series that do this without destroying a much loved series in the process. I have no issue with the artistry of the game. It is of the same level as previous games in the series. It is just the storyline and the lack of anything redeeming about it that I find offensive.
I pray that since there were some regular characters missing from this particular game, that it is a simple outlier and that the series will come back with a better game in the future, but I know that if it continues in this manner that it will be the last time I purchase a Spirit of Mystery game. And that makes me quite sad!
I rarely give reviews although I purchase almost every HOS CE that comes down the pike. I am not particularly choosy about story or graphics, but am always excited when there is a game or a series that really stands out. I have loved the Cadenza games and have always been thrilled when a new one is released. On every level, I loved this game EXCEPT one: I have never been more annoyed then having to sit through the achievements at the end of every HOS game. And I couldn't skip them. This even happened when I attempted to replay them at the end of the game, which I love doing. But I had to stop because I had to sit through 8 achievements after the game was done. And because of this, I can only give what should have been a 5+ starred game, 4 stars. Please please don't do this again. It is ridiculous. Those who love to see their achievements can always switch to that screen whenever they want to.
Although I play almost every HOS CE that comes around, I rarely write a review, mostly because I don't like to repeat what others have already said, and have usually said better and more completely than I would say it. This game, however, is the exception! I will not go into detail about the game play itself as other reviewers have done an excellent and quite complete job of this. What I will say is that this game was about as much fun as I have had in a very long time. I am in agreement with others who mentioned that the recent group of HOS games that have been put out have been rather dark and dismal. I am fine with the games that have a thriller or mystery element to them, but they do get a little depressing to look at and they certainly seem to be awfully similar to each other. This game, however, not only had a fun story line, it was graphically beautiful and quite unique in it artwork. I literally just wanted to stare at the screen sometimes because it was so much fun to look at. This was a true masterpiece, IMHO. As others always say, play the demo before purchasing as everyone has a different set of standards for these types of games. This game met all of my standards and surpassed many of them!
I am an avid HO game player. I play almost nothing else. I am also an avid CE player. This game, on both those points as well as many others, hits the mark dead on! It is the story of a couple that are trying to go home to get the young woman's father's approval (that's a mouthful!) for marriage. They are waiting in a train station where the story begins. There is then an adventure that involves the girl being kidnapped by Death, who is a rather nifty looking dude, other than the fact he is a skeleton. Our hero, who immediately sets out to rescue his girlfriend is aided by a book that is reminiscent of one of the books from Harry Potter. Rather scary but definitely fun. I found the story engaging and interesting, even though I was pretty confident in how it woul end. Even though game is populated by mostly skeletons and and occasional talking machine, it is not one of the scary or eerie games that are often prevalent in this genre.
The graphics were something that I truly enjoyed. I like that they were animated but in a rather cutting edge way, with a few pop culture references that are worth keeping an eye out for.
I don't play with the music on or the VO very often, usually at the beginning, just to get a sense of the sounds and the vocals that are being used. Some may be bothered by the accents, but the setting seems to be a Latin-American-themed setting so the VO seems to be a comical take on that. When I did have it on, I didn't find either the VO or the music to be distracting or problematic any more than I usually find it to be, which I why I don't play with them on a lot of the time.
I found it to be challenging but not difficult (I always play casual, I'm kinda lazy that way) and certainly would be more challenging if played in one of the harder modes (there are three).
The HO scenes were fairly traditional but I found the puzzles and games to be interesting and different. I thought that they really added to the game's enjoyability. There are skulls to be collected that have little extras with them as they are collected, so definitely click on the tab when it comes out after a skull is collected or on the tab that is in the Diary (I use the word very loosely:-) ). You will have some extra fun there. There are also Achievements, some of which are the usual (did a HO scene in less than a minute) and some are not (completed all telephone calls). They have a strategy guide that was certainly helpful but I didn't find it necessary other than to make sure I had collected everything.
The Bonus Chapter kept in character with the regular game play and was long enough and interesting enough to make it worth buying the CE. I also, for the first time, used the Wallpaper and went back and played some of the puzzles that were available for play afterwards. I rarely do that!
Overall, I really think that this is one of the best HOGs I have ever played and I buy just about everyone of them that comes down the road. I know I should be more discerning, but in some ways it makes it even sweeter when I find one that really stands out amongst the others. Definitely worth the money!!
Confront an ancient evil and uncover your true! After a startling revelation changes your world forever, you must embark on an epic journey to save mankind.
I played the entire game but was unable to access bonus content so my review is based on that amount of play. I played, as I alway do, in casual mode. The graphics were OK but nothing spectacular. The story line was somewhat confusing and I wasn't able to get strong sense of the story line. It felt like each scene was created separately and then they tried to sew it together after the fact. The HO scenes were typical and not much different than the average HO scene. The puzzles were a little different and were not particularly challenging but they were fun. My one major disappointment was that there were a couple of times during the game, always when a major event would occur, that I was kicked back to the opening screen where the Play, Options and Exit all are. Each time, I simply hit Play and was taken back to where I had been kicked out. This appeared to happen right at the end of the game, but, in fact, it was the end of the game. There was no pop up that stated that I had completed the game, nor was there the normal run of the credits. I was just taken back to that opening screen. Because none of the normal "end of game" events occurred, I didn't realize it was the end of the game and simply hit Play again. This took me to the beginning of the game again and thus I was unable to access the Bonus play. So, now I have to play the entire game again to get to the Bonus gameplay. However, since I was just not that enchanted with the game, I think I will pass on doing that. Overall, I found this kind of sloppiness on the part of the developers to be problematic. There should be a clear delineation when the game is over so that kind of mistake can't be made by the gamer. I wouldn't put my money into this game again but I might get it as a freebie when the SE is released.
