I was intrigued by the plot of this game when it first released, though I initially missed the "reveal the story exclusively through mini-games and puzzles" part. I know some folks enjoy the CEs, but I'm not one of them, so I waited until the SE came out to try this one. When the SE dropped, I immediately went to download the trial, and that's when I saw the afore-mentioned statement. I had my doubts, but since the story sounded interesting, I decided to give the demo a go. And I'm so glad I did. I've long been a fan of HOAs, but for a while now I've been skipping over most of them because it's the same old story: somebody needs you help with a "cold-case", someone's been kidnapped, someone's been murdered, some fantasy world is in danger - and only you can save them! Bo-ring. There's been very few BFG games over time that have offered something more: The Alex Cross games, the early Ravenhearst games like Madame Fate, Maze Subject 360, and my new fav, the Crossroads series. But this game gives a new spin on gameplay. The story is told through "pages": you read a little (and I mean a very little), then play an HO or puzzle that furthers the story. The mini-games and puzzles are enjoyable; some more challenging, some just good fun. The graphics are colorful and detailed; the music a pleasant backdrop. It starts out a tad slow, but it kicks into second gear quick. This isn't a highspeed super-mysterious mind-bender kind of game, but for HOA fans who are super-bored with the same old, same old, this is a relaxing game with an intriguing story, nice graphics and music, and lots of engaging mini-games.
I recommend this game!

I havent played the latest chapter of Paranormal Files, and now that I have more details, I have no intention of doing so. The character "Rick Rogers" with all his trepidation combined with gusto and quick wit is what made this series so much fun. Great VA, excellent script, great history combined with original stories, awesome music, etc. But you take away the "Rick Rogers" story element, and this is just another HOA. It's sad to see this awesome series be demoted to just another game just because you dropped your key element of interest.
I don't recommend this game.

This game had so much potential: great atmosphere, slightly sinister music, good sound effects, interesting story. But then it tripped at the finish line. The items you need to find are buried in senseless HOs that you come across in odd places, and once you find the "required" items, the way those items are used and the situations they are used in makes no common sense whatsoever, leaving you feeling a bit frustrated that you keep having to search multiple locations for items to fit your current needs - besides the ones you've already found that would make total sense to work in your situation and progress the story. It seems like the devs were trying to make the game longer than it really needed to be, and in that effort they just succeeded in making it tedious. I played the demo, and was so curious about how the story played out (albeit already a tad irritated at the long, drawn-out gameplay) that I used two game credits to buy the collector's edition - definitely wouldn't have made the purchase if I'd had to pay cash. I still haven't finished the game, after several visits to the game - out of sheer irritation for the snail's pace the game has continued to move at and the amount of time I'm spending going around and around in the same locations to find everything I need and put it where it needs to go - one item at a time per each visit to the same scenes... (because never mind being able to pick up all you need from a scene and moving on with the game and the story...). I'd much rather have a shorter game that continued to be interesting every step of the way than a longer game that just lost me in the tedious tasks and endless visits to the map, since that was the only way I could decipher what I was supposed to do next...
I don't recommend this game.

Phew... this one is SLOW going for sure; lots of searching, searching, searching... and more searching, and THEN finding. This is the Seek-n-Find equivalent of a word search... on speed. The story is kind of interesting, but not interesting enough - to me - to endure the interminable time it takes to sort out the bloated scenes to find the few pieces you need to finish the scene; oh, and by the way, you just may find all of the pieces to an object shown on a certain scene that is actually used on a whole other scene that you haven't been to yet - time well spent!
I prefer a faster-moving, slightly more interesting story... the kind where I'm willing to invest some time to find the clues that actually further the story, rather than just provide a time-consuming "find this picture".
I don't recommend this game.

This game has so much potential: enjoyable graphics and music, an intriguing story, an increasingly likable main character... it just falls short in the "fun" category. The next item you need to progress in the story might be on the screen you're in, might be in the last screen you just left, might be in your inventory already, might be in a place you haven't visited yet - regardless of the MANY items you've picked up already... but good luck in sorting that out! Rather than being entertainingly challenging, it just comes off as tedious. How many items do I need to collect before I can move forward? How many times do I need to visit the same three or four areas before it makes sense to any normal person that I've collected every item I need (regardless of how many times I've clicked every item in that scene), and that it's available for me to pick up the first or even second time I visit that scene?? Maybe I'm just used to faster-paced games... maybe I'm just used to games that require a little common sense to collect the items needed to move forward... either way, this game is not for the experience looking for challenging game-play, but maybe for the inexperienced beginner or novice looking to get their feet wet in HO/ adventure games. To the devs: this game has SO much potential: it could have appealed to a much a larger gaming audience if you'd just given the average gamer a little credit for being a tiny bit more intelligent in the common sense department... All of that said, please honestly judge your gaming experience before you give this game a go.
I don't recommend this game.

I've played more than a few hidden object games, and this one is by far one of the best. The story line is phenomenal. You awake in a room with no memory how you got there, and a simple note is your only clue. Each step you take draws you deeper into a twisting, turning mystery. The graphics are moderate, but the music is haunting, and so fitting for wandering a completely empty city all alone. The puzzles and hidden object scenes are challenging but doable. The game is longer than most; I have a habit of playing through a great game in a sitting and that's hard to do with this one. But you can't resist coming back again and again, and while some hidden object games have a predictable plot that you can see coming a mile away, you'll never guess where this one ends up. I recommend using ear buds, because the soundtrack is half the fun.
I recommend this game!

Now that Kiera has learned the secret her family kept, her eyes have been opened to a world she never dreamed existed. As she helps the scientists continue their research, she again finds there's a dark and terrible secret behind it all. Just like the first Nightmare Adventure, this game has excellent music, engaging graphics, and a story that will keep you playing to find answers. Again, great re-play value even after you've solved the mystery!
I recommend this game!

I love this game, and it's sequel. Mysterious, challenging, engaging, great music and effects, and great re-play value even after you've solved the mystery! A mysterious letter, a creepy abandon asylum, and a deep dark family secret are all pieces Kiera Vale must fit together to find the truth about her past.

I would love to give this game more stars. I played the entire 1 hour trial. I found the story engaging, the artwork cartoon-ish but attractive and aesthetically pleasing, and I've played more than a few BF games that only had subtitles. It was a little difficult to figure somethings out, but that was part of the challenge. The idea of collecting and using coins to buy more hints was a unique idea, but it was necessary because you're bound to need more hints to figure things out. Still, all of the flaws could be tolerated because it was an interesting game and somewhat challenging - except for one MAJOR flaw: the pages load WAY TO SLOWLY! It takes forever for each scene to load. By the time the scene loads you've almost forgotten why you went to that area in the first place. And this is one of those games where you have to go back to different scenes to look for certain items which became tedious because the scenes loaded so extraordinarily slow! I wanted to by the game, to finish the story, but I just couldn't bring myself to purchase a game that worked SO badly.
I don't recommend this game.

I have to say I don't scare too easily, but the first time I played this game, I was glad I wasn't playing in the dark! I used earphones which makes the experience SUPER creepy! The graphics were good, the music and sound effects add to the creep factor, and usual "creepy children are scary" element gets an interesting twist! I was engaged within the first 5 minutes and played the game its entirety in one (very long) sitting because I couldn't walk away! HOs and mini games are challenging but not so difficult they aren't fun. The mini game hints aren't too helpful so it takes a minute to figure out exactly what you're supposed to do, but over all, worth every penny!
I recommend this game!
