This one's a keeper! I haven't completed the game yet but am enjoying it enough to jump in and write a review! (And I seldom write reviews, preferring to leave that to the experts.#
I have to admit I play a lot of these HO/A games but I rarely visit them more than once. This game had me sold at scene one, and I expect I'll play it again one day.
It isn't that it's so unusual for this type of game, and the puzzles aren't difficult, but the developers have created the perfect derelict mansion environment! So far there are very few of the anachronisms that often plague these games #e.g., a video cassette tape in a Victorian-era milieu# and the scenes are deliciously, subtly creepy. And then there are some really startling events #um... nice doggy... ) that are quite effective!
There are multiple difficulty levels which you can customize, and a journal that helps you make sense of some of the clues you collect and states your objectives. There seems to be a narrative of a battle between good and evil that develops in the journal as you progress. There appear to be no voiceovers apart from that. There is a hint button that I haven't used yet. No map to tell you where you are or where to go. I haven't found that to be a complication. Music is not intrusive, but nicely atmospheric. I gave it a "good" on storyline because I can't judge the complete story yet, but so far it seems okay -- I don't know if it's a story-driven game.
Give the game a try. I think you'll quickly decide from the trial whether or not it's for you -- I knew right away I thought it was special!
I recommend this game!

I don't normally weigh in on the games that are garnering great reviews, saving my comments for those that I think are under-appreciated. But WOW -- this game is REALLY WELL DONE!
The graphics and animation are amazing. I was impressed with "Chinese Healer" and I think the visual quality on this one surpasses even that. And the voiceovers are some of the best I've heard in a HO/Adventure game. I don't think you will be disappointed.
I played the game in "Expert" mode and only needed to use a hint twice -- they really let you work it out for yourself -- but without the cue comments there were two that I really couldn't figure out. Of course, I could have changed my difficulty level at any time if I'd wanted to, and I *might* just play the game again on "Challenging" mode just to see how it differs. I didn't have to skip any of the mini-games #one thing I find very frustrating in a game are mini-games or puzzles that seem impossible to solve#.
And it might be fantastic, but I really enjoyed the storyline. I mean, why play these games except to indulge in a certain amount of fantasy? I thought the story was pretty well plotted and executed, and I loved the gimmick of changing scenes by turning the projectors on and off. Also thought the scientist/cowboy was just charming -- I'd love to see more of him in a sequel!
Oh, and don't miss the interview with the producer in the extras! It's great fun!
Awesome job, Eipix!
I recommend this game!

First of all, don't know why the description on BFG says, "After discovering that the queen has been having a secret relationship you are sent away to Roanoke Island"... that might be another game but this one is set in the Tower of London and environs.
This is a beautiful game. The graphics are stunning! There are no VOs; all dialogue is written. While not strictly historically accurate, different royals who met dicey deaths are tied together in an intriguing storyline. #For example, the corpse of Richard III is depicted on a gruesomely gothic thone in a chamber in the White Tower. It was recently discovered that poor Richard was actually buried beneath a parking lot. At least it wasn't for the local Tesco.#
You're saving your own neck #literally# instead of rescuing a friend or a lover, but to accomplish this you must assist various and assorted spirits resolve issues so that they can return to their final resting place, etc., etc. Whether the spirits are meek, vengeful or proud, when you solve their problems you're presented with an object that helps you get to the next objective. The puzzles are not difficult, and most of the things you must do are logical, but not necessarily obvious. Certainly not the most challenging game you will ever play, but enjoyable nonetheless.
There is a map, which I consulted a few times. It doesn't "jump" you from place to place, but it will show you where you have objectives to accomplish. There is a hint button, but I didn't use it so I don't know how long it takes to recharge.
I picked up this game in one of those "deal" windows that pops up and bought it on the merit of its graphics. I was very pleasantly surprised! A terrific casual game.
I recommend this game!

I agree with snowpuppy.. give this game a chance. Although it isn't slick like Otherword and Chimeras, this is a fun and moderately challenging game; I will admit the pace does start slowly. Once I overcame my reluctance to use the hint feature, I actually enjoyed getting guidance from my spectral friend. Unless you really enjoy beating yourself over the head to solve these games, I suggest you'll want to make good use of that hint button.
As is sometimes the case with game developers for whom English isn't their native language, the descriptions in a couple of the HOSs are misleading. Don't worry, the hint feature refills pretty quickly, so you can use it to find that ambiguous thing! It has an intriguing story line, and good voiceovers, if those are important to you. I initially found the "whispers" a little unsettling, and later vaguely annoying, but after a while I no longer noticed them that much.
There is a map feature but it doesn't automatically move you from location to location. There is also a task list to help you remember what you were trying to do.
I got this game with a game credit, but I wouldn't have felt gypped if I had paid the game club price for it.
I recommend this game!
