Bob Proposed to his old girl friend, Arlene, a magic student. Then Arlene disappeared. Bob met Sarah. Bob gave her a family heirloom necklace that he had also given to Arlene. Arlene comes back madder than a wet cat and as equally unattractive. She takes Sarah and then Bob away with her - she'll be back for you next! Good stuff:There are HOPs, mini-games, and a fair to middling story. The VOs are good as is the artwork. Everything is suitably grim and gloomy for the story-line. You will have an amulet to help you fend off Arlene and her hench-ghosts by playing a connect three or more game each time you use it. Bad stuff: As usual, we will not only be playing detective, but also master thief. Feel free to help yourself to whatever isn't nailed down. And please don't expect logic - the shed that you declare unused for years still has a light burning in it and a stock of fresh fruits and vegetables for the resident raccoon you meet as soon as you oil those horribly rusted hinges on the door. I have a couple of the earlier games in this series and this new offering reminds me of the reason I don't have all of them. A hit or miss quality of both game and story are not desirable features in a new game. Maybe next time. Please try before you buy.

If you are now confused by my headline, I am no longer alone. You are in carriage with your “Mom” when a troll takes you to the Shadow Lands, where everything is creepy and scary. You wander around with a cutesy cat helper and meet a (possibly) good healer/wizard who tells you about an ancient prophesy that seems to pertain to you. But even he's not sure about very much. Everything else is questionable except that we will save a world. Am I kidding? Read the recaps of the story in the reviews and see the variety. Pick one synopsis you like - it's as good a guess as any other - and play the demo. Then we can all be confused together. Good Stuff: The HOPs and mini-games are well done and sometimes innovative. The VO's and characterizations are also well done and the artwork is beautiful if not realistic. (Hey, I like the red striped cat.) Bad stuff: Basically that story, the details of which are MIA. There is a picture puzzle that tries to give you some details, but fails to be clear. Beyond that, even the "diary" is not helpful as it records very little of your adventure and so misses the opportunity to enlarge on the meager details of which you are aware. So we have a very pretty game with a muddled story and lots of good game elements. Please try the demo for yourself.

Brother dear and his girl friend are urging you to greater speed on the way to the big game when you realize you have to stop for gas. They've already pointed out you are lost! The gas station you find is seriously run down and dirty. You drop something down a grate and see a young woman below asking for help. Knocked on the head, you wake up to an old woman telling you you've been robbed and her son, Jeffery is out looking for your brother and his friend. She leaves you locked in the room and you suspect all is not well. You set out to escape, find brother and friend, help the girl you saw through the grate, and do it all while remaining in one piece. Good stuff: Varied HOPs and decent mini-games, creepy characterizations, and seriously ominous locations. Bad stuff: Extremely minimal story. This makes the game elements more creepy, but I'd like bits and pieces of story to help me down the road. Bottom line: This is an OK game that will need some thought during play, but I miss the story. Creepy is easy; story, not so much. Earlier Phantasmat games had a better set up and delivery. Try the demo for yourself.

Others will give you a story synopsis. I am in deep mourning. I have loved the previous games in this series. They had the same artwork - not great but stylized to the series. They had intriguing stories that were unusual and off the wall. They had morphing objects, collectibles, and seemed well thought out with excellent puzzles and intricate details. And that's where this game becomes ordinary. The spoken dialogue and the written words on screen do not always match. Some of the phrasing is distinctly odd - did no one check for typos and logic? Then there are the oh-so-ordinary and been-there-done-that tasks that we've done in a thousand other games along with the oddities like breaking into locked places at our secret headquarters - why not ask the Professor for a key? Then there are the items you had, used, and had to find another of to proceed - why couldn't I just hang on to the rag, screwdriver, matches, whatever? At one point I run around making rust remover at headquarters to open a door my boss is stuck behind. Great, this will come in handy for the rust I came across in my investigation too! No such luck - I fixed the rust out in the field with an oil soaked rag. Why couldn't I do that back at headquarters too? There is a story in all of this strangeness - it just gets lost among the distractions in the details. How many great series have put out ordinary, if not feeble, games so far this year? I am deeply disappointed. Please try before you buy.

If you have played any of the Spirit of Mystery Games, you know there will be a princess(You), parents, Nanny, and the presumed wicked magician, Isla. This time you have an amulet from your mother to help you discover evil magic flowers, the signs of Isla's spells to keep you where he wants you. Other than minimal advice from Nanny, you are going to have to discover dark family secrets and save your mother from being burned at the stake. Good luck, Princess. Good stuff: The artwork is beautifully drawn with a well balanced palette. There are HOPs with an occasional variation, easy mini-games, low key music, good VOs, and some mystery in the story. You collect jewels scattered around. There is some CE bling. There are four levels of difficulty. Bad stuff: The gimmick with the amulet is a real time waster - which the game needs as the demo took me only 30 minutes to complete and I didn't skip any thing. The other time waster is making a potion for the panther. The story seems to promise much, but there is not much to pull you in. I usually like fairy tale games to play with the grandchildren, but this one is too easy and having Mom tied to the stake waiting to be saved is a bit much for child's play. Try the demo for yourself. I just wish they had worked this game out better before launch.

When they dug this out of the moth balls and offered it up as the game of the day, someone perfectly illustrated a point - we really don't need a game of the day if the "new" game is this old and lame. Janet and Brad have car trouble at the top of the hill, where gentlemanly Brad lets Janet push the car till he gets it started. At the bottom of the hill, it stops again at the entrance to a medieval looking village. Brad goes looking for assistance while Janet refuses to leave the vehicle. First we accompany Brad into the village where a lot of nothing happens. Then we switch to Janet, who finds herself in a strange cabin with a headache. Both times we have mini-games and simple list HOPs. Good stuff: There are the usual game elements done in a very minimal style most suited for really basic beginners. (My grandchildren ages five to ten years have been doing these games for a couple of years now - this is too easy for them.) There are "Frankenstein" faces found in each scene. When you select them you get a pop-up window with some interesting factoid. The artwork is decent, although the characters are more cartoon-like than otherwise. Bad Stuff: EVERYTHING else. The game is a throwback to the beginning of the genre. Scenes and game elements load slowly. Dialogue is read, instructions are less than helpful, and the hand-holding provided by large stark white logos on the screen was overbearing. As for a story-line, you've got Brad, Janet, and the inoperative auto outside a backwoods village and not a lot of anything else. All that said, I gave it two stars since another reviewer made a valid point - this is a good game for a very timid beginner. I just don't know anyone that new to these types of games. Please try the demo before you buy.

You arrive in Havana in 1952 to join your brother, Ernesto, as he reopens his nightclub. As a musician of no mean ability, you will be an asset as he builds his business. Unfortunately, only minutes after you get off the boat, your brother is shot and you are blamed. You will embark on an adventure to clear your name and discover the identity of the strange guitar player who is seen playing as bad things happen within earshot of him. Good luck! Good stuff: The artwork is very well done as are the animation sequences and VOs. The HOPs are varied and contain a morphing object. There are collectible diamonds in each scene as well as an assortment of CE bling. Bad stuff: Some of the mini-games are sad sometimes with even sadder directions. More concerning is the choppy, sometimes strange game play. For instance: I'm getting off the boat to meet my brother, and I stop at the on-deck bartender's station and steal the knife. I walk into a strange restaurant and take the cleaning cloth to go with the random bottle of solvent I have picked up. I see a jukebox with deep scratches on the floor around it, but the close-up is of a random footprint under the edge of the front of the jukebox. The scratches are MIA in the close-up. Clues are thrown around in the form of found newspaper articles, letters, and voice tapes. Unfortunately they don't give you enough information to form a cohesive idea of a mystery that you want to follow and solve. You will need to save your own neck, since the cops believe you are the guilty party, but the details are misty and there is not an involving and compelling a story in this new entry in the Cadenza series. You need to try the demo and judge for yourself.

Emma Roberts is back, this time looking for her fellow journalist, Jack. Jack was on assignment at the Black River ranch owned by famous artist, Alex Dean, who had experienced a tragedy in the house and does not leave it. Everything here is a little "off," leaving Emma searching for answers, while still trying to heed the ghostly warnings of the artist's dead wife. Everything is not as it seems as Emma finds pictures of missing persons, names and birth dates of a murdered family from the nineteenth century, paintings that alter even as she gazes at them, and Jack who seems just one step ahead of her. Good stuff: Good multi-layered HOPs, OK puzzles and mini-games, good artwork, fair VOs, and an engaging story-line. Bad stuff: The game is reasonably spooky, but not enough to carry warnings for heart patients. There is nothing of startling newness. The story could be a mishmash of save my child and stop the return of the wicked souls. But - and it's a big but - this is a Fear for Sale entry so every scene has to be carefully explored. There are morphing items, collectibles, and quirky bits of animation to be found. Is it the next big thing - no. Is it a really enjoyable game - yes. Will I be adding it to my collection - ASAP! Try this one and enjoy.

I like Match 3 games and have several that I replay periodically. They provide minimal story with some challenge. This one is lacking on both counts. There are three ways to play this game, each differing only slightly from the others. Once you've solved a level, you will get a clue or bit of information and start on the next level. You will switch jewels to match three or more of a specific color; match three jewels to turn tiles to gold; or click on two or more jewels to drop special pieces to the bottom of the board. As far as a story goes, you are returning a piece of jewelry from your grandfather to a mysterious lost ancient tomb. The clues will hopefully lead you to the tomb and whatever outcome there is before you. I just fell asleep while playing and woke up in time to lament the lost evening. This is obviously my own fault for muting the sound. Please play the demo before you buy.

The Minotaur's mother, Pasiphae, saved her son's soul to return from death to carry on the savagery that marked his life. Despite the seven young men and women sacrificed to him each year in the labyrinth where he was kept to protect the populous, Mom didn't see any reason to let him die! To help even more she arranged for a sect devoted to helping him come back at some point in the future. They are to kill the Chosen One - that's you - and help the Minotaur return by getting him seven additional souls. Good stuff: Balanced, well colored artwork, along with assorted winged insect and water flower collectibles, as well as the usual CE bling. You get the Thread of Ariadne for which you will collect jewels to power it to perform various feats for you. Bad/fair stuff: Pretty much everything else is average or below, which I could overlook. Unfortunately the usual lack of logic and thought rears its ugly head. Example: The dark robed sect members kidnap you and the museum director right out of his office, take you down to the basement of the museum, and lock you in a room equipped with a saw and a trap door in the WOODEN ceiling. Do you use that saw on the wood around the lock on the trap door? Of course not. You saw through the slats on a crate to get to a wire mouse trap/cage and reach through the tiny spaces between the wire to pull out a large piece of cheese to feed a mouse in the room with you. There's more, but I'll spare you and just urge you to play before purchase. You may be more forgiving, a lot more forgiving.
