I understand that everyone does not enjoy the same type of game, but honestly, I do not understand why the bad reviews for a game that is pretty much what it has always been. I knew what this game was when I bought it, and sure enough, that is exactly what it is.
I played this morning for almost two hours, and had so much fun with it! When it began, I was worried that my favorite villain, St Germaine, would not be in it. Not to worry, at the unexpected moment, when the hood was dropped and the face revealed, it was none other than his evil self! He is so funny that I cannot help but laugh when he gets mad and growls!
I love the beautiful art work done by this group, I enjoyed the puzzles and different styles of hidden object scenes, thought the background music score was very good, and found the character voices to show excellent strength. Can't wait to continue game play and hear St. Germaine growl and grunt his anger! The hidden collectibles were easy enough to find without having to seek out the Strategy Guide (thank you, devs!)
If you enjoy playing a classic adventure by a talented development team, at least please give this game a trial run. I found it to be a lot of fun! RECOMMENDED!
Our mystery opens with an execution scene at Sing Sing Penitentiary where the condemned is strapped into the electric chair. The switch is pulled, a bright flash of light blinds the witnesses, and the prisoner has disappeared leaving only a small pile of ash behind. What happened?
Fast forward, Sing Sing has been closed and abandoned. Our intrepid detective, who works for a secret society which assists the police, has been called to the scene of another similar paranormal mystery. A witness heard a scream in a park, saw a bright flash of light, and nothing was left behind but a pile of ash in the shape of a man.
Newspapers note that similar crimes have taken place before. A private letter reveals that the victims were all witnesses to the mysterious disappearance of the Sing Sing prisoner. Who or what is hunting down the witnesses and murdering them? Can you investigate the unexplained deaths and solve the paranormal mystery by placing yourself in danger gathering clues? Attention to details will pay off with useful items when solving fun puzzles, and finding appropriate-to-the-game hidden object games. You will be rewarded for finding all the Collections, and Beyond (morphing) Items with Achievements.
Five-BN Games has presented us with a super fun game that has diverse characters, a truly interesting story line, settings with just enough creepiness factor, excellent voice overs, a helpful interactive map, and a mystery that is hard to leave for even a few minutes! HIGHLY recommended! Hope everyone will at least give it a try!
THIS ONE IS FOR YOU! It seems like it's been a long time since we've had a strictly Adventure Puzzle game, and this one is great fun! Don't get me wrong, I like HOPA games, but a steady diet seems disappointing after a while to someone who fell in love with gaming by playing Myst many years ago. Yes, the graphics may perhaps be a tad bit dated here, but some of the first Adventure games cost almost ten times as much as this little jewel! There are three levels of difficulty to play Black Rainbow. If you think you may get frustrated playing without the hidden object puzzles for a break, try playing this game at the easiest level. The backgroiund music is appropriate, and the tutorial is very explanatory. Help is available with the hint button, and there is an interactive map. There is also a very good diary which will elaborate on the story and will give you clues as to what may be your next course of action. There are skulls to collect for an achievement. All in all, I was very happy to find this game today. I have already bought it, and have played one hour with no problems. Highly recommended for Adventure fans!
I recommend this game!

Actually, I would give this SE game a 4.5 rating, but since I don't want to round downward, will round up.
No this is not a pachyderm game, nor a big al game, but guess it is impractical to expect one of them every week. In the meantime, those of us who love adventure and puzzles, with a dash of HOS thrown in for good measure will find the trip to Poison Springs interesting.
The game begins with us meeting the ghost hunter team, and moves along to the Poison Springs Park and Museum, where we are trying to find the manager who was supposed to meet us at the entrance.
There are lots of scenes to explore, some on the spooky side, and lots of puzzles, most on the fairly easy side. Since there is not a Strategy Guide offered as yet, you may appreciate the puzzles not being of the mind bending sort. There is a Skip button if you wish to use it to progress more quickly through the story.
There are Hidden Object Scenes, but I did not feel there were too many, and believe me, nothing kills a game for me more quickly than being faced with a HOS every time I turn around!
Music and voice overs were more or less on the budget minded side of things, but neither was annoying. I just looked away when the characters' mouths did not move with their speech.
There is a map that will show you where tasks need to be completed, but it will not teleport you. There are no collectibles or achievements, just a lot of good adventure game fun for those who do not particularly care for the influx of children's selection of games.
I hope everyone who loves Adventure Games, Hidden Object Games, and Puzzle Games will give this game a chance!
Got a spare Reward Code lying around? This would be a fun way to use it!
What a great game, it has all the bells and whistles in a Collectors Edition, and at a Standard Edition price! Plus, I got mine free using the BFG Rewards code yet I would gladly have paid full CE price for this one! It has:
* An interesting Adventure story. * Lots of fun and not too difficult puzzles. * Interactive HOS where you find one object to complete another. * Secrets that are actually hidden stashes of money you can use to buy fountains and plants for your Meditation Room. NOTE: There *IS* a walkthrough on BFG Forums if you get stuck as I did in the clock tower attic and cannot find the money. *An Achievement Room containing all the trophies you earned.. * Mutant plant/animal flowers to find and collect during the gameplay. * Interactive map that will show you the locations needing your attention, and that will allow you to jump through hyperspace should you forget what needs to go where.. * Excellent graphics, with many different scenes to explore. * No demons, vampires, werewolves, or altars, yet this game will startle you a few times! The Villain is worthy of a batman movie! * This is not a short game --- I have been playing for a couple of hours on several nights and have not completed it yet!
I have several hundred BFG games installed on my computer, yet I do not hesitate to say: ALL IN ALL, TOTALLY RECOMMENED! DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!
Rescue a young girl from the Penumbra Motel. Solve puzzles, unravel a long standing mystery of death and disappearances in this heart-pounding adventure game!
At last, a new Adventure game! No hidden objects here, just a lot of investigation required to find objects, one at a time, to perform certain functions such as open a lock, break open a wall, get something from the bottom of a well, etc. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a hidden object game as a means to relax and while away the time, but I love a good Adventure game that challenges the mind and carries me away from daily life. . Loved the graphics here, the music was so-so. Recommend this game to all the dedicated Adventurers who enjoyed playing Syberia, Myst, Amerzone, and other classics in this vein. By the way, all of the mentioned classic Adventure games are sold right here on Big Fish Games! I was tickled to find them here in Windows 7 format since all my old Win 98 games would not run on a new computer. Why not go on a new Adventure today and try Dark Alleys, Penumbra Motel CE! You wont be disappointed!
Love the creepy, dilapidated asylum, hospital, or mansion games. Exploring the enviornment is as much fun to me as the puzzles. Also enjoyed the environment sounds such as rain, water dripping, birds, and the funny little robot, all of which add to immersing yourself in this game. Perhaps the story line was a tad weak, but all in all, the really well done graphics offset any story weakness for me. I was pleased to get all this for the price of a SE. Had the developers added a little concept art and wallpaper, this could easily have been sold as a CE due to the graphic & audio quality.
I recommend this game for those who want to escape to somewhere different for a few hours. It will make you glad to be back home!
VISUALS: This game had really nice graphics, with beautiful snow, a large, damaged estate, and lots of rooms and outbuildings to explore. I loved that I could keep going back to all the scenes, none were closed off once the puzzles were completed. AUDIO: There seemed to be only one piece of theme music that repeated itself, but I enjoyed it so did not mind that it was somewhat repetitious. The voice overs were quite good and were believeable. PUZZLES: were on the easy side. Did not have to skip any and did not have to refer to the built in Strategy Guide. Thank goodness, there is no annoying penalty for clicking on everything you see in the HOGs. FUN FACTOR: I truly enjoyed this game. It was a refreshing getaway after a long, difficult day at work.
Screenshot graphics are beautiful but do not feel the game was special in any way. Puzzles are very easy, most of the HOS are find fragments to complete one whole object. Audio is nothing memorable. It was very annnoying to keep running into gates and locks that can only be opened by Silver Collector's Edition Key or a Golden Collector's Edition Key. Recommended if you have played all the other adventure games and need something new.
