For those who don't know, this is a new developer rebooting the original Jane's Hotel franchise. They should have left well enough alone. Somehow StarCo managed to find the good parts of the original game and surgically remove them. The animation is lifeless, the gameplay is clunky, and the little humorous touches are gone.
The basics are precisely the same: you check in guests, then send Jane or the maid to fill requests during their stay. (No porter. No photographer. No ghosts.) However, the maid gets the brunt of the tasks because the game is unbalanced. That won't prevent you from sleepwalking through each level without a challenge in sight. Steer clear of this one.
Take on new time management challenges and help three young archaeologists unearth the mysteries of the past and piece together the story of the brave Xi Niu!
Unsung Heroes caught my eye because new time management games are so rare. The diverse team of archaeologists held my attention for long enough to keep me playing through the free trial, despite the similarity to other TMs. Then I did something I very rarely do - I bought the game because of the story. The 'easy' levels became more challenging as the game progressed, the music was pleasant and relaxing, and Xi Niu's story took a few twists that I didn't expect. That includes one or two in the credits - play this out to the very end!
I'm a longtime lover of time-management games, but I often get tired of them because they're easy bogs of point-and-click boredom, or in a few cases because they're impossible. (Settlers of the West, I'm looking at you...) This game was just right. Give it about half a dozen levels and you'll notice that you need to have a strategy to win, not just a fast mouse. My only minor gripe was that the power-ups weren't explained - you have to hover your mouse over them for a few seconds before the script pops up telling you what they do. Still, I'm likely to go buy the CE next because I'm addicted!
I was a beta tester for this game and enjoyed it immensely. While it's not the most original gameplay concept (same as My Kingdom for the Princess et. al.), the graphics are cute and the story is fun. My husband, who's not normally a PC gamer, even took an interest in this one and has been asking when it would be released so we could buy it!
