This was supposed to be the happiest day of your life. But instead of walking down the aisle, you're in another dimension, battling a mad inventor to save your family!
This is one of the worst games I have played here on Big Fish. The cut scenes looked like they were drawn by art students. It was consistently one HOS after another. The puzzles were extremely easy, but the reason I am giving this game a 1 is because one of the mini-games in the last chapter froze on me. and thus I could not complete the game. Since I really didn't like the game that much, that doesn't exactly bother me, but I did pay full price and would have liked to have finished. The main reason I am not recommending this game is because of that puzzle freeze towards the end.
Return once more to the haunted grounds of Ravenhearst Manor to uncover new details about this poignant saga. What you find could very well be the final chapter of this riveting story-if you escape.
It's been so long since I wrote a review, but after playing this particular game, I just had to get my two cents in. I'm not going to rehash what other reviewers have posted. I'm just going to tell you why this game may just be for you. Do you like to think? Do you like a challenge? Do you like movies that tackle abnormal psychology? If you answered yes to those questions, then what are you waiting for?! This game IS for you! To be fair, the warning about the game is not without merit. It is intensely psychological and downright creepy. The music and voices all contribute to the overall unsettling and creepy atmosphere. There was even one scene that when I figured out what I had to do, I was squirming in my chair. Yikes! As with any other game, this one is not without a few cons. There is NO map or hint system outside of the HOS. That means you will either tear your hair out from frustration or consult a walkthrough--like I did. Know this: this is no ordinary HOPA game. Even the HOS are not normal. Instead, you are hunting for morphing objects and once you collect them all, the helpful ghosts point you in the direction that will advance you in the game. There is a lot of logic to this game. Absolutely NO hand-holding. It is as if you are playing a game on hardcore mode. Everything you see take note of. Even if you think it has no relevance, I can assure you it does! Once I realized that this game involved a lot of logic and deduction, I grabbed a notebook and pen and started keeping notes so I wouldn't forget anything that might be important. Sometimes even though I took notes, I still had no idea at times how to utilize the information--which is where your skills at deduction and reasoning will be strengthened. You will really have to put on your thinking cap to advance in the game. One thing I was disappointed in was that the puzzles had no instructions, so you really had to fend for yourself--sometimes with trial and error. While I originally thought of that as a negative, I realized that it increased the chances of me replaying the game to hone my inner Sherlock Holmes. Yes...this game has EXCELLENT replay value! I intend to replay it again today today!!! I'm a little sad I didn't get the CE, but I may save that for another day ;). I also intend to purchase its predecessor! If it's as good as this one, I will not be disappointed! Overall, the story, fun factor, the audio and visuals, and definitely the level of challenge all earn a 5 star from this pleased customer!
I'm shocked at the great reviews this game has gotten. I'm playing it right now, and if I wasn't close to finishing I'd simply quit and uninstall. I can't speak on the volume because I had mine turned off, but I can give my two cents on the visual. I really don't like HOS that are junkpiles, but if the items at least look like what they're supposed to I cut the game some slack. As an example, in one scene the devs idea of a door handle was to look like a clove of garlic. It was awful. The items are usually so small that if you aren't an experienced player you will get frustrated really quick. I"m already there. Of the 3 modes of play I'm chose the middle, and I'm quite thankful I did. I couldn't imagine playing this without the hint or skip button, which I have used frequently. This irks me the most because I usually don't have to use either of these buttons or at least not to the extent that I have here. There are quite a few puzzles, and I didn't think they were all that easy. I have skipped about 3 so far, and I'm not even done yet. What the majority of these puzzles have going for them is their originality. Overall, I really liked the story, but that alone hasn't been enough to draw me in. I'm aggravated that I have had to skip as many puzzles as I have. That's usually what I look for in a game, but today is just different I guess. I'm unsure how to rate the level of challenge because it has been hard just not in a good way. I haven't enjoyed the junkpile HOS or the puzzles, but as I stated today has been an off day for me. Perhaps if I had played this two days from now I'd feel different. In any case, I'm refraining from either recommending or not recommending and just advising to test it before you buy it.
I've played all of the Agency of Anomalies games, and this one by far is my favorite, though they are all good. I got this on a deal (all Orneon games were half-off) and was thoroughly pleased with my purchase. In this story you are again an agent trying to help some theater performers, and as always with this series you will be able to gain some abilities as you go. I really liked the story and felt the game flowed quite nicely. Of the 3 levels offered I went with the middle choice as there is no chance I'll play without a hint system though I didn't really use it much. Still, it's nice to know that it's there even though as a CE the SG is always available :) The visuals were pretty good and sound was good. There were VO, which I liked, especially since the voice actors weren't too bad. Not the best, but definitely not bad. I really liked that the HOS varied. In some you might get a list, others silhouettes, and still others you would have to place objects where they belong. None of the HOS were horribly difficult, but they were not so easy as to be boring. There were a lot of games.....a lot. I remember using the SG for a couple, but I didn't skip any. As with most CE you can earn achievements throughout the game. My favorite was collecting the 31 records. I personally think that adding objectives like that to a game only makes it better. I've played these games for so long that it's hard to see originality anymore, but embarking on a secondary quest to collect things throughout the game adds another layer of play for me. This was a fairly long game. I think I got about 7 or 8 hours of play, so you do get your money's worth. Now for what I didn't like and what you may not like. There is no map, just a journal. That didn't really bother me, but I know many players like maps, so I'm just giving the heads up. There is a lot of backtracking, which again didn't really bother me because that's how most of these games are, but a lot of players don't like that. The one thing I really didn't care for ironically was the bonus features. In the bonus game I couldn't really follow the story too much because I had to keep repeating the same puzzle...over....and over...and over. It got old to the say the least. You'd solve a puzzle, only to find out that you had to go collect some more stuff so you could solve it a 2nd time. In some cases there was a 3rd time. I'm not sure what the devs were thinking, but that was just overkill if you ask me. I still think the game deserves 5 stars because if this had been a SE there would have no bonus features to aggravate anyone lol. I'm definitely recommending this game because it was really well done and has replay value!!
My review is based only on the demo, though I will probably end up buying this game. I've read some reviews that said that the game was bad because there was no sound, but I just finished the demo and there were plenty of voice-overs. The acting was pretty good too. The voice acting is usually hit or miss, but for this game it was a hit. The visuals were pretty good, though not as sharp and clear as in other games. Be prepared to play a really dark game...literally. I really liked that the game leans more on the adventure and puzzle aspects rather than HOS. The HOS tend to be your usual junkpiles with some interaction. There are 3 modes to play: casual, expert, and professional. I played on expert because I didn't want to play without a hint system in place just in case I got stuck. I only used the hint button once. The story isn't really that captivating. Your brother gets kidnapped by some hooded figures, and it's up to you to find and rescue him. I've been playing these games for so long that a good story for me is a requirement. Still, it seems to be a fun game with a lot of adventure and puzzles so I will probably buy it for that alone. I will say that it is starting to get old the way a lot of these games paint witches to be evil, one-dimensional characters. I understand that Halloween, or Samhein as I would say, is right around the corner, but still. It really wouldn't hurt to develop a game about good witches as there are many of us out there that fall into that category. All in all, it seems like a fun game for a day when you just want to relax, so I will recommend it.
I think I may have a new favorite game. If ever there was a time when I should have bought a CE this is it. The story was so engaging that I couldn't wait to see what I would find out next. The artwork was hauntingly realistic. I truly felt for the characters. The music really fit the game---soft, haunting. It wasn't annoying or obtrusive in any way. There were only a few times when the game employed the talents of actors for voice-overs, but the actors did a good job. I was pleasantly surprised. There were not as many puzzles as I would have liked and they were fairly easy, but I didn't mind that because the story is what was keeping me hooked. My biggest complaint were the HOS. Those were some true junkpiles. There were 2 levels to play; I chose the harder mode. There is a map, but I never used it. It didn't tell you if you had anything to do somewhere so there really was no need for it. Outside of the HOS the hint button would point in the direction you needed to go unless there was something to do in the room you were in. All in all, I really enjoyed this game. It gave me about 5 or 6 hours of relaxing gameplay on a day that would otherewise have been very boring.
This was a very well-done game. Your character is Elu, and you are trying to stop evil shadows that are taking over the town and tricking people into making wishes that backfire on them. I played with the sound off, so I can't offer an opinion on that. Game length was quite good. I didn't play it all in one sitting, but I could still judge the game length. I played over the course of about 5 days. There were 3 levels--casual, challenge, and extreme--and I played on challenge. It kept me busy lol. There were a lot of puzzles, none of which were really hard, but they were fun. One of the things I liked was that you never did the same HOS twice. The map is helpful and lets you know if an area still has things to do. The map also transports you to an area, which definitely saves on backtracking. There are four characters that you will meet and interact with as you progress in the game. Each of them has made a wish that went bad, often with creepy results. The graphics weren't horrible or anything, but they weren't great either. I think what bugged me the most was how the characters looked so much different when they were speaking than the way they did in their photographs. That didn't ruin the game for me though. It was well-done and had a good length. There were tons of puzzles which is always a plus for me. Overall, I give it 4 stars!
I love reading about the different theories as to who Jack the Ripper was. That's what drew me to this game. I have always been fascinated by the Ripper murders. Sadly, the story just couldn't save this game. There were two levels, and I played on the advanced level. That meant that every HOS and puzzle I played was on a timer. I didn't like that. In the HOS you could collect up to 5 fingerprints which would add 30 seconds to your timer for each one, but that didn't help. You were required to find a lot of items on the list, and in some cases, I didn't know what I was looking for. What is a truncheon? What is a tankard? By the time I figured it out, I ran out of time and had to start the scene over. And every time you click on the wrong item you lose 10 seconds off your timer. There were a few puzzles, but this was mostly a HOG. The puzzles were mostly easy, but there were a couple of challenging ones....Challenging mainly because of the timer. If you don't like games that are mainly HO, then you won't like this game. This is more suited for beginners. I don't usually play these games all in one sitting, but even so, I can judge the length of a game pretty well. I started this last night and finished not long after I woke up, and my opinion is that it is very short. The story is good though. As you play, you collect information on the different suspects. At the end, you get to choose which one you think did it. That was really cool. All in all, I think the developers had a good thing going with the story, but they just fell short in its execution into a game.
I just finished this game, and I felt it was worth 4 stars. I was actually going to give it 3, but it did have some redeeming qualities that pushed it to 4. It was a very creepy game. I actually started to play this the other night, and it creeped me out so much that I waited until morning. For those of you that like that level of creepiness you will really enjoy this. In a nutshell, your character is searching for her twin brother at the hotel. The story was based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, and it was well done with an awesome ending. I could see a sequel in the future. It's important to note that the HOS in this game are few and far between. It really is more of an adventure with some puzzles and scattered HOS. For those of you who are sick of HOS, you will probably like this game. There are two levels, and I chose the hardest one. There was no map or journal, only a task list. The hint button did take longer to recharge, but that was fine. One thing I have developed after having played these games for awhile is a high threshold for patience. Part of what I didn't like was the fact that there was no map. It would have simplified the running around, but the developers took that into account and would find a way to "ruin" certain pathways so your character wouldn't have to keep backtracking. So, in that respect, you were basically being told in a round-a-bout way that an area was cleared without having to see it crossed off on a map. That's actually pretty clever. Another thing that was annoying was that at times you would have nothing in your inventory, and then it would shoot to a ton of stuff. If the item had an X underneath it, you would have to figure out what it was to be combined with. Sometimes that was easy, and sometimes it wasn't. I will say that the hint button was 100% reliable. I never had to consult the walkthrough. Another thing that kind of got on my nerves was when I was in a place where I could drop something from my inventory off to help clear out my inventory list I was not allowed to do that until I had EVERYTHING needed for that task. You can imagine how cluttered your inventory gets. There was only one puzzle that was challenging and required some thought. Everything else I've seen so much that I solved with no problem. I like my puzzles to be a bit more challenging. The cut scenes were really well-done. I'm a huge fan of cut scenes that play like an old movie such as the ones did in this game. All in all, I would recommend this game for adventure lovers who really don't like a lot of HOS. The story actually makes up for the less-than-spectacular puzzles.
But then it kicked into high gear! I feel that it's important to mention that there is no journal or map, and you will backtrack a LOT. It's also worth mentioning that most of the mini-puzzles are not well-explained as to how to solve them. I had to use the walkthrough a few times. There is no difficulty option, but it plays like intermediate or expert. A beginner might not like this game as it can be very challenging at times. So why did I give the game 4 stars? Because it turned out to be a really exciting game once it got going. The puzzles were actually original in my opinion. I came close to skipping one, but then it clicked in my head how to solve it after I read the walkthrough. The puzzles involved some logical thinking, which is always a plus in my book. Your character is Christie, and you have been summoned to your parents' house by your twin sister Stella to save everyone from an evil force that literally sucks the very soul out of its victims. The graphics were really crisp and well-done. The sound went with the story. It wasn't overbearing. My biggest complaint was with the HO scenes. The items to be found were almost always really hard to find, and sometimes the item didn't even look like what was on the list. For example, in one scene it had vulture on the list, but what ended up crossing it off was a griffin. That happened a lot. Since we're on the subject of HOS, it's important to mention that a lot of those scenes will be revisited. Overall, I really liked the game once it got going. It was kind of like watching a movie that starts out slow but quickly grabs your attention once it gains some momentum. The puzzles were ones I had never seen before, so the game gets an A from me for originality. The developers have my humble respect as there was a lot of hard work put into this game.
