Sorry, I do not understand the hype that is created about this new instalment; MCF is definitely gone and I am afraid that EIPIX released too many games this year, that one gets the impression they mix up their very own games. This has absolutely nothing to do with MCF; a story line that could be easily taken over for any other game. Big Fish: honestly... hand over this game to another producer that makes MCF great again; the last 3 instalment are a pure disaster; The Hour I just bought because it was a MCF instalment, but most certainly not this one nor the previous one. A very disappointed MCF Fan.
Review based on Demo (could not bring myself to buy the game)
Mad Head Games is one of my favourite devs on the market these days, as they are most probably one of the most innovative and creative devs. And on top of that they are brilliant storytellers. But with this instalment, they really lost me. The game play is constantly interrupted by cut scenes and way too many displayed windows. You are too many times informed that you got "a new card" ... another "new hint"... It lacks smoothness, hence I personally did not find myself within the story (which is a first with Mad Head Games...). I assume that the devs wanted to give PC games a new touch of modernization, but I am sorry, it rather feels like watching a movie than playing a game. And for once, I also consider the art work not very breath taking (with a very few exceptions). I am utterly disappointed with this instalment. No buy for me. As with all games I recommend to try it out yourself. You might like it. Tastes are different.

When I first saw that MCF is back with a new instalment, I was not quite sure, if I even wanted to download it, as I did not find the previous one very good and was rather disappointed.
But I am very very glad that I have downloaded the game and in particular that I have bought the game. It is one of the best games this year and Elephant Games has done an outstanding job (gladly I would like to add, as I have been a bit disappointed recently with their new games).
You will have five (!!) difficulty modes to choose from and for the hard-core players, there is even a limited time mode – I guess that should meet everyone’s taste as to the difficulty level. Of course you will have morphing bubblehead dolls during the game play (rather difficult to find I personally find) and during the HOS you will need to find secret cards; there are also old Pound notes to collect, they are rather easy to find. You can even solve little games in your “Notes” that I have not figured out for quite a while as I usually do not read them – go and have a look. The Map is also very helpful, as you will need to go back and forth quite often.
What really “knocked me off” in this game are the absolutely fabulous mini games, that are not only new, but there are some mini games that really take you a while to solve, if you do not read the instructions. They are extremely creative, interactive (find first an object etc. to continue) and are full of surprises. Even the HOS are interactive and for once also new actions (not all but quite a few) and I have enjoyed even the HOS (which is rather rare). The puzzles are also fun and the majority of them are new.
The graphics are MFC standard (not as crisp as we are used to from Elephant Games, but it adds to the game’s atmosphere), cut-scenes are fairly good, voice-overs well done, music is appropriate and not annoying, and I am glad that there is not so much talking.
The game play is from my point of view rather challenging and you will most certainly need your brain cells and a very good memory. That is why I am most probably already over 5 hours already into the game and have not even finished the main game yet, let alone the bonus chapter, but I could not wait the give this game a 5-star review. I have not been disappointed at all and am still surprised anew how much effort the developer put into this game. Two thumbs up – Elephant Games.
The theme and kind of game-play might not meet everyone’s taste, but I would highly recommend it to MCF fans and gamers that like a challenge. I personally find this game worth every single cent. But as usual: try it out first and decide for yourself.
The good news first: I have bought the game with the weekend discount. Yet, it is still a waste of money.
Now the really bad news: the main game took me roughly 2.5 hours - the bonus chapter a mediocre 30 minutes! (ok I skipped 2 puzzles because they really bored me, but that would only add max. 5-10 min....)
I was really intrigued by the game at first and believed that this will be good entertainment and have bought the game. The scenery and good voice-overs and story-line (at the beginning I would like to add) were attractive enough to keep my interest, eventhough the graphics are not really state-of-the-art but still decent enough - sometimes washed out and not really crisp.
There is a mix of silhoutted interactive HOS and some standard HOS, however the quality of the HOS became towards the end of the game really bad, silly and amateurish. You just click more or less on any object and you have a winner. The puzzles are a good mix of known mini games but certainly not mind-blowing and become during the game-play simply boring. The same applies to the story-line. At the beginning it seems that the story has some solid ground, but became more and more vague and I could not really recall anymore what the whole story should be about.... I guess that says it all...
You have some collectibles but they are so obvious to find that not even that is a challenge. The overall game is extremely straightforward, needless to say that this also makes it very boring. There is your standard map - nothing new here.
Yes, your little companion Matthew is cute to look at. But no fun factor, no wit and he just grabs items that are too high to reach ... I have seen that so many times ...
Last but not least I would like to mention that in general background music hardly bothers me, but in this game it absolutely frustrated me and I turned down the volume.
No, it is not worthy a collector's edition - not only because of the length of game but the general execution of the game. I personally believe it is not even worth a SE.
A rather bad review from my side, but I was highly disappointed in this game. If you enjoy easy games and have nothing better to do - you might consider buying this game. But I recommend to save your money on other games. Sorry BFG - but that is a let-down.
Usually I do not buy a game without playing the full demo version. However, as there was the weekend sales on I have bought it without playing the demo. And I do not regret it all. On the contrary.
I seems that a lot of reviews are based on the demo version only. I personally find it at times misleading to read reviews of gamers that have not completed the game at all as it can be quite misleading to the overall game play, quality and fun factor or difficulty level.
The graphics are in general very well drawn, the quality could have been at times a bit better (for that I would give a 4-star) However, I appreciated the attention to details, especially in the HOS. And the HOS I thoroughly enjoyed (which is rare); they are a good combination of slightly interactive HOS and silhouetted ones that blend smoothly in the game. And the mini games - there are quite a lot - I truly enjoyed - they were not overly difficult, however also with the puzzles it is a good mix of easy to a bit more challenging puzzles (if you have played the whole game I would like to add!!).
The story-line kept my interest till the end and I was not bored once. Also the characters were lovely drawn (well, the bad guy dwarf really looked all too familiar from another game.... hmmm ... but I loved his voice!!) - good voice-overs and voice-acting for that (in other games they can be utterly amateurish) - background music decent and definitely not disturbing.
And yes.... the bonus chapter: it took me almost 1.45h to finish it (and usually the bonus chapters in other games that were released recently took me a mediocre 45-60 min.) - and I skipped only one puzzle that almost drove me nuts as I was not able to finish it. The length and also continous good story-line is simply worth a 5-star. And the HOS and puzzles were of the same quality until the end of the game and throughly enjoyable.
Some players might not agree with me, but this developer really made a big time effort of offering a true Collector's Edition. I absolutely enjoyed the game and can recommend it to players who love good entertainment with a nice mix of good puzzles and HOS, and are not looking for the ultimate kick of adventure, shocking cut-scenes or zillions of morphing objects.
Tastes are (luckily) different. From my point of view, this game has simply met all my expectations in a very good game: gorgeous graphics, a story that is appealing and different from the ones that we have had so much of lately, new puzzles that were at times rather challenging, interactive HOS that kept my interest throughout the game (and even in the bonus chapter they were interactive and not just straight HOS as with so many other games I have played recently). And above all, the bonus chapter did not let me down, and that is rather rare these days.
What I have really loved about this game, that you had to think. Some players may not enjoy a challenge and prefer games that are simple and so straightforward like walking down a street ... well, this game is not a straight walkthrough. And that is what I very much appreciated. I have read reviews that said it was too simple and playing only 10 minutes? Well, I guess you should certainly play the complete demo and decide for yourself.
This game will certainly be on the top 10 games for 2013 - at least on my list of favourite games. I highly recommend it.

Everything has been said, but I really wanted to give this game a 5 star, because of its originality, great graphics, outstanding story-line, extremely well drawn characters and above all, because this is a new generation of HOS. You don't play dull HOS, but you really are looking throughout the game for objects. Simply brilliant.
I wish there were more games likes that! A two thumbs up for the developers! It got me hooked throughout the game. And that is rare. And I wish it would not have stopped!

I have purchased all Dark Parables games from this developer and was really looking forward to this game. BUT ...
... the game play reminds me very much of the Dark Parables series, as the style of HOS is the same (collect items to create an item), even the sound when you collect something is the same, game play itself reminds of the Dark Parables ... and YET ... there is a difference, and this one I have really found disappointing ...
... the difference between this game and Dark Parables is the quality of the graphics - now here I was rather shocked to be honest ... the introduction movie was outstandingly well done ... and also some cut-scenes are of high quality. Hoewever, the HOS are so grainy and you are supposed to find tiny objects that all look similar ???? No way! Also during the game play I have found the overall look way too colourful and not crisp .. and if you have very colourful scenes, the graphics should really be sharp, otherwise your eyes hurt within a few minutes.
The storyline I have found bizarre and actually confused me more than anything else.
I'm sure there are quite a few people out there who will like this game, I just find it a big disappointment coming from a generally really good developper.
Find the festivalgoer abducted by the gargoyles of Notre Dame and uncover the cathedral’s dark past in this reimagining of the Victor Hugo’s classic tale.
If you enjoyed playing the first installment of 9: The Dark Side you will not be disappointed in this one - except for the bonus chapter - so if you can resist it, wait till the SE comes out.
After playing 10 minutes I already knew that I'll buy it. Great story-line that is also connected to the first installment, yet a different story. Lovely locations (not only the Notre Dame), very good graphics with a few exceptions (some HOS were a bit too grainy to my taste), very good cut-scenes and good dialogues - nice iHOS that were sometimes a bit tricky and some rather on the easy side. Good mini puzzles, that are not entirely new, yet at least not only sliding blocks and turning wheels... some challenging, some rather easy.
- Three modes to play - Useful map (usually I try to avoid it, but with this game I sometimes really needed it) - Good overall game play, logic and yet can be difficult at times - Nice length of standard game play (the bonus chapter is from my point of view a waste of money, finished it within about 30 minutes) - With the Amulett you will have to find symbols that will "restore" / activate gargoyles, scenes et.c
AND LAST BUT NOT LEASTt: your helpful gargoyle friend Gladriel ... who will fly up high ... and is very very funny (well, he made me laugh various times during the game .. just place him in the wrong spot, and he will let you know what he thinks ..).
If it were not for the bonus chapter, I would have given this game a 5 star - but the bonus chapter was very disappointing, the spark was missing ... and not worth to buy the CE. On top of the that Gladriel is also not present anymore.
I acutally did not want to write another review. as everything is already said - but if someone writes misleading comments such as there are "real" people "again" in this game, I have to intervene.
I'm half way through the game, and all people are drawn. Yes, the graphics and artwork are Elephan's standard ...they are of very high quality. I haven't spotted one single real/live person, unless of course, one considers very well drawn characters "real"....
The game is fun to play, but they could have added a tee bit more of adventure and surprises into the story-line. And that they are capable of, one should meanwhile know, as they have recently released quite a few excellent games.
