Something was lacking in the demo. I just didn't get that "I gotta play more to find out what happens next" feeling that some games give me. I felt I kept playing just to play enough to give a fair review of the demo. Not a great way to feel about a game that, really, there is nothing wrong with! Well, it's too purple! What's with developers making games so purple? Is purple cheaper to program!?
Choose male or female character. I object! The female is "clever" and "perceives supernatural" stuff. But, the male character gets to be "brave" and he's already known for "saving many lives!" I want to be a brave woman!
HOS: a variety. The first was best, it introduces us to the phone with a list. When objects are found, we learn about the characters and setting.
Then some silhouettes and story (find the items shown as words - not my favorite). Some HOS include mini-puzzles. Some are introduced with a puzzle. One was find so many ofs, then interactive items where we learn the just WHY the director is doing what he's doing! Nice to know!
You can play Match-3 instead, but it isn't a very good version.
PUZZLES: Would be easy if some of the instructions were better. Or else it's me. Enter "code" which is just four symbols on a paper. Sort of a maze, collect helpful items to progress. Press buttons to make a pattern (on easy you may as well skip, it's meaningless to play). Match radio waves (once). Piece a note together, the place chips like it shows on note. Too many torn pages to put together.
COLLECTIBLES: Lots, which may be the saving grace for me and this game as a CE. I don't think I'd bother with it otherwise, but collectibles are why I buy CEs. Not the bonus chapter and definitely not the other stuff always offered in the extras!
* Cinema "attributes" - 15
* tickets - 56 - use to get things for the audience hall. Like seats, lights, popcorn machine...
* posters - forgot how many!
* not really counted as collectibles, I don't think, we do get "notes" that go into our "task" book.
We do get the same sort of tasks and inventory. A rusty lock. A sewn up curtain. A lock pick that once again isn't used for a puzzle (they used to be). A bit too much help in the inventory (like the laser pointer... surely we'd figure out to play with the cat? Do we have to see the image is a mouse?) and via ringing phone. Now and again we get a ring and learn what we are supposed to look for, what we will need (glass cleaner), or how to do things (what will open that rusty lock). No need for the extra help, if we want it we'll ask!
If the missing sister is a member of the British Association of Architects, and we drove a car with a right-hand steering wheel, why don't any of the characters sound British? Let's take care of the little things, developers! Players notice!
Oh, the GM crashed and the game closed right after I used the glove on the statue, and again when I exited the game. My game was saved, but still... something isn't quite right with it!
I will give an unenthusiastic recommendation. As a CE, and with a very good sale, I'll get it. But, I was not overly impressed by any part of the game.
I recommend this game!

I enjoyed the early Mystery Trackers, pre-Elf! I once tried to feed him to an alligator with no success (and I love dogs!). Seeing another 'gator, I tried again! No, this one only wanted fish, not yappy little dog. At least I read that Elf is less used in this game as in past ones, although I still had him in my inventory at the end of the demo. Elf is not so much a dog as an ugly little chupacabra! Actually, he looks better in this game than in some, but still...
Enough of Elf... how's the game?
Average. I though the graphics were a bit more cartoonish than usual. And in quite a few of the puzzles they were poor. Flat, like they skipped bothering to make them 3-D. The setting should have been more striking, under the sea and all, but at least in the demo it wasn't much to "write home about," as my mother used to say.
So, our arch enemies, the Dark Tracker Order (who?) are thwarting us and steal our "tesseract," which is just a fancy name for a type of cube. We join forces with Russell Jackman, a name that brings nothing to my mind but the Jack Russell terrier! Bad name choice!
HOS: varied bunch. Including minis in the demo, I counted 6.
*mini (6 items)
* list, then find 4 of something with a magnifier
* mini (6 items)
* silhouette, then find 3 morphs
* replace misplaced items - not well done
* list, then pictures
PUZZLES: like mentioned earlier, the graphics in some are noticeably inferior to others, and not up to capabilities. I counted 7 in the demo. A few had confusing instructions, when the puzzle itself was easy.
* move triangles to fit spaces, moving one moves others
* arrange things so they don't touch, followed by move the green sphere into slots passing all the gears. This is one of the "flat" puzzles.
* rotate more triangles
* rotate, again, tiles to connect lines on board. Another with poor graphics
* move starfish to slots with hooks, rotating with buttons - confusing.
* click when arrow is in green zone
* move rows and columns to make map, then click symbols (ala HOS) as shown on map.
COLLECTIBLES:
* morphing objects in the main scenes
* sea creature collectibles for our "aquarium" in the extras
* jig saw puzzle pieces for our "album" in the extras. We do NOT put the puzzle together! What's the point of having them?
We have the same tasks as usual. The same items in our inventory.
* Use a glass shard, protected by fabric.
* Fix an electrical wire with tape.
* Cut out crude stitching to see what was poorly hidden! We need acid (no need to find a jar to fill with dripping green acid though, we get ours in a spray can now!).
* Fill an empty lighter with fluid.
*Fine a fuse.
* Our magnet comes ready to use on a rope, so that saves us the trouble of finding string to tie to it ourselves.
* Tokens and pieces and keys and a lock pick. Remember the games where a lock pick would be used in a puzzle? No more, just shove that thing in the keyhole and the doors unlocked.
* Use a wrench, go inside, and need one again, but don't bother to go get it wherever we may have put it down, wait around to find some pliers. But, we retain the screwdriver?
The lack of anything new, and the theft of doing the puzzle ourselves, make this a no purchase for me, at least as a CE. This series have been around an awfully long time. Can there be anything new? Besides the Dark Trackers that is?
And, as I never recommend a game I wouldn't buy myself, I won't.
I don't recommend this game.

A few short weeks ago we got the first Detective Solitaire, The Man without a Face (great title, big nothing game play). Now, with The Forbidden Magic, I guess the story continues.
The problem is, there is no story! None. A title is all we get. The rest is just one-up-one-down solitaire, the same as the first game. Not just similar, the same. Oh, maybe the cards deal in a different order, and the layouts change, but the background are the same! The chapter names are different, but that does not make for a story or a new game!
I own the first, and play it now and again when I wait for the microwave to beep or noodle water to boil, but that's all it's worth, a bit of time-wasting.
Poor quality game. The basic things to earn (with special cards) or purchase (with coins earned by playing or special cards) like mulligans and wild cards. If you own one of this developers games you don't need more!
I don't recommend this game.

A nice Match-3 game! Basic game play, with frequent side games/puzzles. Also, after a few boards you will be gathering resources to help rebuild the village destroyed in the storm. The builder part doesn't overtake the Match-3, as in some games, so I didn't mind it. I like the side puzzles, although, really, for a Match-3 game they needed come so often.
Play timed or relaxed. You CAN make matches while tiles are still in motions, a big "need to" for me. There may be impediment tiles, such as ivy that needs to be removed by matching near it, but it grows back and spreads. Your objectives are shown at the top of the board. Some boards will have several objectives, which is shown by how many small circles are under the large bubble.
For puzzles there are quite a few different types. HOS, light all the buttons when pressing one lights others, untangle vines by clicking them from the topmost down... nothing mind boggling, but fun.
There IS a story and it interrupts the game play a bit too much for my taste, but at least there is a story and it's told!
A solid game with much to recommend it, so I will.
I recommend this game!

I look forward to Mondays, to see if I'll find a treasure or a dud release! This one is a treasure. My review is based on part of the demo. I wanted to stop and buy before getting too far! (I've played the first part of this game before...?)
A murder mystery, what could be better? For me, nothing!
I like the graphics, the almost buy not quite cartoon quality to them. The sounds are well done. (I did think the widower could sound like his wife's death was a little more tragic, to match his words!). I love the cursor being a pen nib.
Since it's not a CE we don't have the extras, which is fine. I hate buying SEs since I know that I am missing things! I bought this game, and to take advantage of the sale had to accept buying an SE of a CE on my list (one with the fewest collectibles).
HOS: nicely varied. Find a flashlight and batteries, then set the battery polarity. Use that flashlight to find clues on a body. See, this is what makes a game "good." Relating the HOS to the story, integrating the items, not just tossing in a HOS because it's "time" for one. The list was very interactive, included a puzzle.
PUZZLES: when we fine instructions and clues, the papers go in our journal, not our inventory. So, when we need them we must either remember, open and remind ourselves, or open and write them down. Great! I HATE the inventory instructions, it makes things too easy. Plus, really, in real life we'd write things down and have to refer to them.
*click buttons in order
*set clock
*move blocks so tile can get past them (one of my favorites, I have this sort of game on my phone)
Another surprise Monday game! Some of my all-time favorites have been Monday games. Again, I want to mention how much I like the new Big Fish logo. It's fresh and current.
I recommend this game!

Surprise, surprise! I was surprised that I enjoyed the entire demo (took 41 minutes)! I am not an entire demo person, so that tells you something right there. Oh, it's not a "great" game, and I wouldn't vote it "best" or anything, and I won't be buying the CE (the collectibles are less than thrilling), the SE will do.
First off, lovely music in the intro! I don't usually pay attention, or it's noticeably off. This was nice.
TONS of HOS and PUZZLES. I counted what seemed like puzzles, but since they lacked instructions they probably were just tasks that included something puzzling, something to put together, etc. I counted 17 puzzles and 13 HOS in the demo (HOS too might not have been what are considered HOS, but were ones where you look for pieces or so many ofs).
HOS: Lots of the recent "minis," mostly find so many of this or that, or pieces of this or that. Silhouettes, lists, storybooks, put wrongly placed into place, etc. Some with lots of interaction. One was to find 16 pieces, then put together a torn note with a code, which then turns into a puzzle using that code.
PUZZLES: Heavy on the turn/switch/rotate tokens/pieces/tiles to form an image sort. Some of the turn one it turns others, like always! All of them were super easy. But, for some reason I was still interested in playing. Even the placing labels on jars, which was just to match the jars that already had labels. A minority of them offered "hard" or "casual." In one case it just meant the difference between doing all the pieces, or starting with two already done.
The problem with the puzzles (besides the ease and sameness) was the outlines. We do not need outlines for a ripped note. We do not need outlines to fit curved pieces in to a ring (they are curved, no way to place them wrong). We do not need outlines for anything really. Lose them.
COLLECTIBLES: Uninspired. Morphs (26) and figurines (13), but not both in each scene. So, you really don't know what you should be looking for. Not consistent.
Things I didn't like: Too many cut scenes of much too much peeking through. Peeking through to see imperiled maidens. Peeking through to see a struggling Dupin. Peeking through keyholes... windows... doorways... always peeking. Speaking of Dupin, he's another thing the series can lose. He's been relegated to a supporting character, a minor one giving no support. He either stands and waits (yes, I'm alluding there), gives us obvious suggestions, or weakly struggles with assailants, shoving his cane to and fro. He's no longer necessary! And, what's with changing his appearance every game?
No my favorite Dark Tales, the earliest ones have much to recommend them. But, the best in the past couple of years. As an SE I'll get it. The extras in the CE just aren't worth it for me. Oh, don't buy if you're after a Poe story game! They used to be true, but no more. Ha! "Nevermore" perhaps? Time for a new series with a different author? I'd be game for that!
I recommend this game!

It's two games really, Match-3 and a clutter sort of HOG with puzzles thrown in.
I dislike clutter HOGs, the upside down and sideways items disorient me! Here you can make matches as seen, or slide items off other items to find matches. Colorful items, easy to see, easy to find.
The Match-3 part of the game is not well-made, it's like Match-3s of old. You can't make matches when other tiles are in move. That's one of my "must have" for any new Match-3, it makes for quick and frantic game play! By the looks of the screen shot on the main page, we can see the tiles are large, so it's a very basic, very simple game.
The Match-3 "story" is related to a previous game by the developer. I am not sure the HOG has a story. You play one character for each game, not a choice between male or female character.
I found a lag time between all scenes that caused me to mistakenly thing the game was frozen.
I don't recommend this game.

Basic one-up-one-down solitaire, with small drab cards on a drab background. That's about it.
No preliminary story (read the game description if you want one I guess), just to the tutorial screen (too many instructions), then straight to the game.
Not just basic, very basic. Worse than a decade ago as far as extras and even the expected touches. Miss clicking a card? No hint to let you know, so pay attention! You are given one reverse (mulligan, not called that here), and have to buy anything else.
And the costs! Wow! You want a mulligan, hand over 30,000. How about a wild card? 30,000. Want to be allowed to USE that wild card? Apparently you need an additional 25,000! I had 5,000 at the time I quit.
Choose from two card graphics, and four card backs. Mostly all the same... just tans and browns and small images.
With all the wonderful solitaire games (lots of one-up-one-down that is, how about a nice Klondike people?!) available, why is this what's offered? We've been getting some pretty stinky offerings lately! Low quality. Too low for Big Fish to lower themselves selling, I think.
Try Chronicles of Emerland Solitaire, Jewel Match Solitaire, Zombie Solitaire (I am not a Zombie fan, but this game is addictive!), almost any but this one!
I have better games on my phone, for free.
I don't recommend this game.

My review is based on 16 minutes of demo play (I just HAD to see how they dealt with Joseph's imprisonment!), which included earning enough money to build Potipher's house, his field, and a prison for ourselves.
My review is based on the game play only, since I don't play religious themed games. This is brought to us by the same people as The Chronicles of Noah's Ark, no surprise. The good thing here, probably the only good thing, is we don't hear the "lord" speaking to us! Our "holy spirit" tiles drop off the board with no fanfare, just a message in text.
So... game play.
This is an extremely low quality match-3. As a paying Game Club member I rather resent being offered something so poor as our new release, let alone something that is not newly released.
The graphics for the boards and tiles are poor. They are not clear and crisp, but fuzzy.
The game play is ordinary to a fault. Clear the board of colored tiles (how many is shown at the top of each board), so many of certain tiles (shown at top), bring down special "holy spirit" tiles, make money to rebuild Egypt. Get the ordinary upgrades such as hammers and potion bombs. Chains and other impediments need to be removed to free tiles.
If you use Windows 10, there is a special message for you before the game opens. I have 8.1, so it didn't apply to me. Apparently on Windows 10 the game may have "issues" and the message tells you how to work around them. Good thing I don't have Windows 10 and don't want the game, I do not work around programming issues! Fix them or no sale.
There are so many great match-3 games available on this site. This is one of the worst I've demoed. If your only concern is the re-telling of Joseph's story, then you'll probably overlook the terrible quality. Want a quality match-3, based on myth? See my "favorite" listed here. It is quality, as is the next in that series, about Jason.
I don't recommend this game.

I don't dislike science fiction or science fiction games, I own other Beyond games, it's that this one just didn't interested me. I played the entire demo so gave it a fighting chance. I liked the Earth chapter much better than the space ship one. For me, once I got on the ship things were bright and floating and fast and made me nauseated! Then, once in the control room with my brother I had trouble controlling the cursor. It seemed almost like it was supposed to do it, like part of the lack of gravity or something, having trouble moving inventory items to their places of use.
There is way TOO MUCH STUFF in this game. TOO MANY puzzles! Yes, this puzzle-lover is complaining about too many puzzles. By my count (and some things seemed puzzlish, but didn't come with instructions, so they probably weren't so I didn't count them) there were 14 in the demo (68 minute, not hurrying, even fixing breakfast when the nauseating floating space junk appeared), along with, I think, 6 HOS.
PUZZLES: too many... mostly just following written instructions or laying items on an existing outline.
* a couple of put the torn papers together
* rotate rings as on a map
* put planets in order (outlines are there - why? Are they saying we do NOT know the order of the planets in our own solar system? So we? I hope so!)
* some matching symbols and turning buttons all one color (of course, pushing one turns others), matching hidden pairs, two of a click to remove "petal" shapes to match what is shown. All much too easy, with way to much hand holding and laying it out for us.
HOS: junkpiles. Some silhouettes, some lists, some put misplaced parts in their correct places. Find matching symbols, that sort of thing. I hate junkpiles, which are making a comeback. Put some thought into hidden objects, make them make sense to the game, to the scenes. No electric toaster where we pop up our listed item, toast. No roller skates in the sink. No same bread loaf image used time and time again. Items that are not just out of place, but out of time, and out of any reasonable reason.
COLLECTIBLES: of course. 48 morphs (and in HOS), and 29 of the swirls, but they have been upgraded to look more like spaceships.
GIMMICK: of course. The game even calls it a "weird device" for lack of anything suitable.
Our tasks are the usual. Make a fishing rod to retrieve an item in water. Find something to use as a knife handle, to pull the stuck blade out of whatever it's stuck in. Get rid of the rust. One "congratulations" is in order - we use our hands to wipe off cobwebs!
Once I got off Earth the game went downhill for me. All those free floating (which reminds me of "Free Falling," which reminds me of our alien hero, Tom Petty) parts to gather up... all the senseless things I did (I just started pushing buttons and pulling levers with no idea what they do. How do we know our brother will live if we take him out of that capsule he's in?)
I think two stars is generous. It would be three (an "okay") but for the sameness of it all. The story is the same, just set in space. The first Beyond was so clever. Where are the puns and insider sci-fi fan jokes here?
As always, if I wouldn't buy, I won't recommend.
I don't recommend this game.
