BASED ON DEMO & SG
I was a little outvoted on my review of the CE of this game. The consensus seems to be that it is lovely, well drawn, good story. Definitely CE material. I am still not convinced. I think it is GOOD as a SE, and falls short of the mark as a CE.
I like the STORY, like everyone else, and the best thing about this game is the way that it is TOLD. A romantic tragedy, with overtones of MYSTERY & INTRIGUE, and we’ve got those ever-favourites, PIRATES. Cartoon-style movies give us back story, and we have a sad ghost who leads us onwards in her quest.
The GRAPHICS still show up as DARK on my computer, even INSIDE the castle. From the SG, I see that the STYLE (not a favourite of mine) remains the same throughout. Even the lighter HOS are MONOCHROMATIC. So to my mind, I don’t consider this a ‘pretty’ game.
What makes this game INTERESTING (as an SE) is some NEW IDEAS in the HO SCENES. They are your usual (not very) INTERACTIVE LIST, but in one scene, finding the items on the list entails opening cabinet doors, which in turn opens and closes others, so your items are constantly being REVEALED then HIDDEN. Cool.
Later in the game, there is also an HOS where you must find the items in SEQUENTIAL ORDER.
I found the PUZZLES quite EASY, and the ADVENTURE quite STRAIGHTFORWARD. For help there is an INTERACTIVE JUMP MAP and HELPFUL HINT. It really is not a challenging game – which is not a criticism, I like relaxing games.
There is another NEW IDEA I like in this game. You must COLLECT COINS in order to open TREASURE CHESTS in which you find ITEMS you need to progress in the game. A little extra fun.
So. A GOOD GAME, as a SE, without the CE price tag.
I recommend this game!

BASED ON GAME COMPLETED MANY TIMES
The opening moments of the game are HEARTSTOPPING as we watch a young woman RUNNING FOR HER LIFE through a forest towards the town of Maple Creek.
At the commencement of the game you realise you are that woman, but you have no recollection of how you got there, or what or who you were running from. As you progress you remember you are a DETECTIVE trying to locate a MISSING GIRL, and as more evidence comes to light, you begin to reconstruct the case.
The most important discoveries are finding your NOTEBOOK & MAP. The map tells you where you have things AVAILABLE TO DO, but doesn’t JUMP you to a new place. This is a failing in the game because there are a LOT OF LOCATIONS, and a lot of toing and froing.
You also find your EVIDENCE BOARD. Using this becomes a mini-game of its own, as you must connect the pieces of evidence to the relevant aspect of the case, and draw conclusions.
There are almost NO PUZZLES at all in this game, but there are a LARGE NUMBER of HO SCENES. These are slightly INTERACTIVE LISTS. They are very good HOS in which items are clearly seen and identifiable but very cleverly hidden.
There is an ADVENTURE aspect to the game, and it is straightforward and RELATIVELY EASY. I rarely used the DIRECTIONAL HINT.
The GRAPHICS are VERY WELL DONE. They are drawn in varying shades of light, but are always artistic and detailed realism. Plenty of realistic AMBIENT sound as well. The VOICEOVERS are EXCELLENT.
This is solid, well constructed game which would appeal to most HO gamers, without quite getting to the standard that would send us over the moon.
A pleasure to play.
I recommend this game!

BASED ON DEMO
This game already has me won over. The STORY is a spooky GHOST story, set in the BROAD DAYLIGHT of a sunny day in the country. While the ATMOSPHERE suffers a little from this departure from cliché, I think it’s worth it just for the variety. And it is a creepy story. BLOOD RED GHOSTS began to appear to the children of an orphanage. The principal believes they are real, but no one else does. The orphanage is closed anyway and you in your role as a REPORTER with OFF THE RECORD are investigating this decades-old case.
This is a HO GAME, there are oodles of them everywhere – which is just fine by me! The ADVENTURE component is limited and very simple. Each INVENTORY item is quickly used in an obvious place. There are also very few PUZZLES, and so far they are not difficult.
The HOS are the INTERACTIVE LIST TYPE, with some objects requiring further action. Some require the solving of a VERY SIMPLE little puzzle – for example, placing different shaped stones back into a necklace where the background cloth indicates the shape. There are also some MULTIPLES OF items in each HOS, for instance, spur x 5 and apple x4. If you are too slow on finding an item, one will start to glow.
HINT points to the area you need to be DIRECTLY, showing a photo you can JUMP into. So does the INTERACTIVE MAP which shows you active objectives, places with things to be done, and your location. You have 3 levels of difficulty, which is probably just as well, because on Regular this game is VERY EASY.
The GRAPHICS are CLEAR, PLEASANT & BRIGHT. No problem with dark scenes in the beautiful daylight. They are not, perhaps, spectacular, but they are CE standard. The MUSIC became a bit annoying to me, too many repetitions already. AMBIENT sounds are great. VOICEOVERS were also EXCELLENT.
Now for the BELLS & WHISTLES. *deep breath*
We have COLLECTIBLES – 37 crayons, 12 letters (of the alphabet), 16 toys, and we must also find tapes with the backstory.
ACHIEVEMENTS – 20, including ones related to the collectibles.
GALLERY with ART, CONCEPT ART, REPLAYABLE CUT SCENES, MUSIC, MAKING OF.
REPLAYABLE HOS & PUZZLES.
BONUS GAME WITH NEW HOS
STRATEGY GUIDE – which at first I couldn’t find, it’s in the diary I never even thought to open!
I’m keen to buy this one, it fits me to a tee – good story, nice graphics, different idea (daylight) and the gameplay is HOS heavy.
But that is not going to be the case for most HOPA fans. I think even in the ‘INSANE’ mode, this game will be TOO EASY for EXPERTS, and have too many HOS for the ADVENTURE PLAYERS.
So 'OFF THE RECORD' I recommend it to all us AVERAGE players out there looking for a relaxing & entertaining few hours.
I recommend this game!

GAME COMPLETED MANY TIMES
History is only a gondola ride away in this utterly beautiful and charming HO game. Even in the clutches of the plague, Venice looks romantic. At least, it does when drawn in the WONDERFUL HAND DRAWN GRAPHICS of ERS & DELIGHTFUL MUSIC. (Which, admittedly gets a bit repetitious eventually.)
You are a DETECTIVE brought in the RESCUE two young women who have been kidnapped. Immediately, it becomes apparent that the criminal is aware of your arrival, and is doing everything possible to hamper your investigation. A MAN IN A MASK threatens you and warns you to “stay out of Redemption’s path”. The VOICEOVERS are really just for the opening dialogues, but are reasonably well done.
This is really HO Adventure, as there is few PUZZLES. The HO scenes are clear, objects are easy to spot and some are interactive. There are COLLECTIBLE fans to be found in each HOS, used to increase the number of HINTS available.
Neither the HOS nor the PUZZLES is difficult. There were times, though, when I really had no idea what to do next. HINT was no use “there is nothing to do right now”, and there’s NO MAP. The JOURNAL had nothing to offer either.
An amusing addition in this game is the SHOPKEEPER, Giovanni. Giovanni just happens to have in stock the right item at the right time, for just the right price. So be diligent in accumulating those ducats.
To date, there have been 3 Grim Facade games, and I love every one of them, but this one will always be my favourite. It just has this amazing atmosphere, and the STORY as it unfolds later in the game is really INTERESTING.
I recommend this game!

BASED ON FULL DEMO ONLY
Tearstone is not your average HO GAME, by a long shot. The GAMEPLAY is of a style I’ve never seen before.
In each SELF-ENCLOSED CHAPTER (there are 8) you receive a list of 16 or so GREY-SCALE PIX of the items you will need to COMPLETE the chapter. The first few of these items are almost certainly within easy view in the first LOCATION you find yourself in. As you find items they are changed to FULL COLOUR in your list and are now available as INVENTORY ITEMS. As they’re used, they disappear. There are no useless items, by the end of the chapter you will have NO ITEMS LEFT. You will then move to a NEW LOCATION to start the NEXT CHAPTER.
There is also usually a CHARACTER to speak with who will give you TASKS or errands to run for them before they will help you. You will need to search other SCENES within or beside the original LOCATION. Some will only become available after some task has been completed or a PUZZLE solved. Some items require the combining of two inventory items and you have a MAGIC MIXER for that. NONE of these activities is DIFFICULT. There is only ever a few scenes and tasks in each chapter, so while there is a lot of back and forth, you can’t get lost. Therefore, NO MAP.
HINT gives you either the task to be performed in that scene, or if there’s nothing, then either suggests you come back later, or tells you that there is nothing left to do there.
I can’t remember anything at all that might be construed as sound, so either it wasn’t there or was very forgettable. No VOICEOVERS.
The GRAPHICS are a puzzle to me. On my monitor they look so horridly low-def I’m not sure I could ignore it enough to enjoy the game. Yet others are saying they’re good. I assume that this is therefore my own silly fault buying the latest and biggest! *sigh*
I am not going to tell you this is a fantastic game. But it IS SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFERENT from the usual run, and it has WELL THOUGHT OUT gameplay.
Not fancy, but interesting.
I recommend this game!

BASED ON ONE HOUR DEMO & SG DEMO
First, the INTRO really gets your attention in this game, and the ATMOSPHERE of tension and fear continues even once things quiet down.
While I remember, the MUSIC & AMBIENT sounds are REALLY ominous, and some of the best I’ve heard, adding to the tension. There are muttered incantations, moans, organ music. The GRAPHICS also depict some FRIGHTENING stuff, and are very PHOTOREALISTIC and clear. Because of the nature of the game, though, they tend to be A BIT DARK. Not all the time, but enough to be noticed.
The STORY has us off to rescue our GRANDFATHER, who is a member of the ORDER OF THE LIGHT, and has taken off through a PORTAL to other worlds in order to recover ANCIENT RUNES that are needed to seal the PORTAL OF EVIL. These have been stolen and are now scattered throughout the MANY WORLDS. The first one is quite creepy.
As we travel, we will meet characters whose allegiance has to be questioned at this stage, we just can’t be sure of anyone. Our grandfather manages to send us MESSAGE CAPSULES from wherever he is, I never figured out how, giving us CLUES & BACKSTORY. These are COLLECTIBLES of a sort I guess.
The GAMEPLAY is balanced fairly EVENLY between HOS and PUZZLES. Based on the SG demo, this balance continues the whole game. There are 2 KINDS of HOS, INTERACTIVE LIST & MISPLACED OBJECTS. The PUZZLES vary in difficulty, but overall were NOT VERY HARD.
There seems to be a FOCUS on the ADVENTURE component of the game, but it is not too difficult. The MAP gives ACTIVE ZONES and allows you to JUMP there. The HINT is DIRECTIONAL.
From the SG, I got the impression this game isn't very long, but it has plenty of SHORT CHAPTERS. The emphasis is centred around the point and click adventure, though, and there are therefore relatively few HOS and PUZZLES. So it might be longer than it looks.
I decided to wait for the SE on this one, and I am glad I did. I’d have been disappointed if I’d paid CE price for a game that is INTERESTING but NOT AMAZING, and without the usual bells and whistles.
As a SE, I think this game is just right.
I recommend this game!

BASED ON THE DEMO
Each new 1000 Doors game increases the scope of our activities, and now we are ready to SAVE THE WORLD - with the HELP of at least one ALIEN and a little TIME TRAVEL.
There are GIANT SERPENTS attacking all over the world, and the inhabitants of the House are the only ones who are safe. You were rescued by a stranger and brought to the House, where he immediately collapsed unconscious. It will be interesting to uncover his story!
The GAME STRUCTURE and mechanics are the SAME as the previous 1000 Doors games. You must resolve dilemmas in four different realms. In this case, four different eras in time. The first is Central America in the time of the CONQUISTADORS, where you'll meet another very interesting character.
Young Sammy from the first game uses his genius for things mechanical to furnish you with the special keys needed for the time portal. And Gabriel is also with us, being his usual helpful self, reading in the garden – in the rain.
The graphics are excellent, but I’m not going to rave about them, because they are no more than we’ve come to expect from any decent game, particularly a CE. INTRO and CUT SCENES are GOOD, not great. The AMBIENT sounds are very good, MUSIC forgettable. VOICEOVERS for the most part are WELL DONE.
GAMEPLAY is a GOOD BALANCE between adventure, puzzles and HO scenes. HO SCENES of 2 types – INTERACTIVE LIST & MISPLACED ITEMS. Clear, crisp, attractive visuals. The interactions are logical.
The PUZZLES so far have been reasonably straightforward. I skipped one because I got frustrated with it. Used the SG once, when the INTERACTIVE JUMP MAP wasn’t enough for me to understand what to do next, and HINT refers you to the MAP, unless there’s something to do in the current scene.
One thing I gotta say, I am sick of FLOATING ISLANDS!
This is a nice solid game. Bound to entertain anyone who plays it, it is not necessarily going to rock the world.
BONUS CONTENT
Standard Issue stuff: Bonus Chapter, Gallery – incl. Cut-Scenes, Music, Strategy Guide.
Also 20 MINI-GAMES to replay, and 4 PUZZLES. (What is the difference anyway? I never know)
I LOVE the story so far and am a FAN of the SERIES, but I’ll wait for the SE.
I recommend this game!

That is: NO HO SCENES & NO PUZZLING PUZZLES EITHER
I am not usually into these mechanical steam punk sort of games, but this one isn’t like any of that type that I’ve seen. It is as much FAIRY TALE as it is ROBOT INVASION.
There is a VERRRRY LONG intro that gives us the backstory, but it’s EXCITING and ATTRACTIVE and has wonderful MARCHING MUSIC to set the OMINOUS scene.
The kingdom of Namariel is invaded by robots led by the evil Iron Lord. We see the palace destroyed, the king humiliated, the queen fleeing. Heart rending stuff. Turns out, though, that this is all a show on your uncle’s mechanical music box. Or is it?
Your uncle is an INVENTOR and it is to him the king turns to for help. We are to go on a quest to seek out NOSTRAMUS, the seer who foretold the catastrophe. We never get to leave even, before the Iron Lord’s minions capture us and throw us into prison. Now we must ESCAPE and RESCUE our uncle, and make the JOURNEY to Nostramus.
We’ll have HELP along the way. We have a gadget which allows us to READ MINDS, a cute little ROBOT assistant to go where we can’t, and a strange SQUIRREL-LIKE critter who follows us around and is quite useful.
There is a lot of CUT-SCENES in this one, enough to really bug some people, but I found them fun. They are FLAWLESSLY DRAWN and the VOICEOVERS are EXCELLENT. Lips are out of sync, though.
All the ARTWORK is HIGH QUALITY and IMAGINATIVE.
The few PUZZLES so far have been VERY EASY, while the ADVENTURE ITSELF a bit more DIFFICULT for me. This was at least in part because I couldn’t COMPREHEND the mechanics.
But HINT is DIRECTIONAL, so I made do with that. NO MAP. I never even thought to look for SKIP. I don't think the game has one.
I like this game. I think it will appeal to those who usually like steam/mechanical games, but has a WIDER APPEAL, including those who enjoy a good FANTASY game with just a dash of *cute* as well.
It'd be EXCELLENT for ADVENTURE GAME amateurs (which includes me).
I recommend this game!

What a terrible disappointment! From the video and screenshots, you couldn’t tell what quickly became apparent. This game is bad, with no redeeming features.
The INTRO did let you know just how awful this was going to be, with POOR VISUALS, mixed ‘large file’ style graphics, with comic style. NO VOICEOVER and blurry text on the subtitles. Throughout the game there is a lot of dialogue in equally blurry text, in speech balloons.
The game appears to be a HOG, but it’s a very poor one, with neither enough (preferably clear and interesting) scenes between the adventure, or sufficient adventure and puzzles to be a HOPA.
The HO SCENES themselves were so sad. POOR QUALITY GRAPHICS, mediocre drawing, NO ANIMATIONS, altogether created a very FLAT 2 DIMENSIONAL FEEL. Lists were ever so slightly interactive first visit, not so the second.
But on a smaller monitor they might have got away with that, except that the ADVENTURE component of the game was also SO LAME & IRRATIONAL, I spent a lot of time simply using HINT to get around to the next step rather than trying to guess myself. HINT is DIRECTIONAL, btw. So I guess that’s ONE POSITIVE FEATURE. There is NO MAP.
At no time did I get any kind of feel for the STORY. I’m confused as to who is haunting whom, if any, and what’s this about live paintings. Mentioned earlier, and never followed through.
I normally stick to a demo through thick and thin when doing a review, but when the HINT button stopped working (don’t know if I used it too much or a glitch), I called it quits.
Unfortunately, unless you have a small screen and infinite patience, I can’t recommend this game.

BASED ON COMPLETED CE GAME
I had just completed Chapter 4 of 9, which had taken me almost 3 hours on EASY, despite EXCESSIVE use of HINT, SKIP and the STRATEGY GUIDE, when I first sat down to write this review. I forgot to submit it, so I get to comment on the full version after all. Which is a good thing, because the game actually changes in character at the halfway mark.
The STORY is a little different from the norm, we must rescue our BOSS, from a CENTRAL AMERICAN source of EVIL. A CURSED MAP has brought ancient evil down upon him and a SHAMAN has kidnapped him from his home before your very eyes. You must find and piece the map together to discover your destination in the jungle.
Halfway through the game, I had just managed to locate the map and enter the jungle. The CUT-SCENE for this is SPECTACULAR and actually scary. All the cut-scenes are very dramatic, as are the AMBIENT SOUNDS & VISUALS, creating a very threatening atmosphere.
The GAMEPLAY is MOSTLY ADVENTURE, with some very CHALLENGING PUZZLES. There are only a few HOS, and they are static, straightforward LISTS. Not interactive. In the JUNGLE part of the game, the PUZZLES get EASIER, there are MORE HOS, and even the ADVENTURE became MORE LINEAR.
The PUZZLES include PUZZLE BOARDS (unskippable even on easy) that require interaction with a number of items to retrieve your inventory item. However, the TWO in the DEMO, were the ONLY ONES in the whole game. The OTHER PUZZLES include traditional ones altered to make them more difficult, and SOME NEW ones. SKIP is VERY SLOW.
There is a lot of to and fro, and the MAP tells you only WHERE YOU’VE BEEN and where you haven’t, with no jump feature to reduce the footwork. HINT, though, is VERY GOOD, only one click is required to get the directional arrows all the way to the next action.
I enjoyed this game a lot, the jungle more than the first half, because I’m not much good with puzzles, but at first I pegged this as A GAME FOR EXPERTS, but IT ISN’T. It appears that way only in the DEMO and I consider that offensively DECEPTIVE.
NOTE: If you’re thinking about buying the CE version, FORGET IT. The altered ending is LAME, as is the BONUS CHAPTER, which has few new scenes and is a HO GAME, with almost NO PUZZLES, and static non-interactive HOS visited twice each.
However, it can’t be denied that this SE VERSION is the BETTER game with DRAMA and ORIGINALITY on its side.
I recommend this game!
