Really I think I'd give this game more of a 3.5, but I rounded up.
It's like the Farm Frenzy games. I liked that you can walk around through different rooms rather than just looking at a regular menu. It was a fun touch that only would have been improved by having more easter eggs hidden in some of the rooms.
My biggest gripe with this game, is that unlike the other Farm Frenzy games, once you win the game, you can't go back and replay the levels and try to improve how you did on them. You just have to start over again. For this reason, for anyone who likes to go back and improve their times, I'd recommend holding off on finishing the very last level until you're satisfied with your performance in the earlier levels.
A few other, smaller gripes: you can't replay the little arcade-like mini-games that pop up occassionally throughout the storyline. You only get the one shot. It'd be better if there was a way to replay those (this would be a perfect use for one of the many rooms you can enter). Also nice would be the ability to reread descriptions of what each of the weapons you're manufacturing is used for. Since you end up using those to try to kill zombies in the mini-games, it'd be nice to be able to refresh yourself on their uses.
I could probably think of all kinds of little ways to improve this game, but those are the main things.
Bottom line: If you like the Farm Frenzy games, you enjoy the Vampires vs Zombies conceit, and of course, if you enjoyed the demo, I'd recommend this game, But if the whole vampires vs zombies gimmick doesn't do anything for you, I'd say take a pass, even if you like the usual Farm Frenzy games. Purely in terms of gameplay, this isn't one of the best ones. It's not bad, but there have been better.
I really wanted to love this game and I did love the demo. But I've come across two problems that keep me from wanting to continue on and finish it. The first is that you can't pause or save your progress within a level. So, say you've found 62 out of 80 moles but you need to take a break? Your only option is to leave the game running in the background while you do other things. Extremely inconvenient. The second is that there seem to some bugs in the game still, most seriously that on a couple of occasions I've gotten to the end of a level, having found all the moles it seems possible to find, but it's still telling me I have one mole left. I've had this happen twice now and gone back all over the yard trying to see if I'd missed something - nothing. My only option was to start the level over again. Combine this with the other issue I described and you have a very frustrating experience. It's too bad. I really love the concept of this game but some issues need to be worked out before it's a good game imo.
This is, like other Drawn games, gorgeous. It's almost worth the price of the game just to soak in the scenery. I also found the puzzles to be genuinely fun and challenging - in a lot of these kinds of games the puzzles are a little too straightforward for my taste, but these were genuinely engaging. It's also a lot of fun to play around with the pop-up book. And the narration gives a real sense of atmosphere to the game.
Quibbles? It was a bit too short. I forgive the game for its shortness in this case because it's such a beautiful and enjoyable game, but if the depth of the game is a higher priority for you you may be disappointed in this.
Also, it could be a bit slow, even freezing at times. I know there was a tip during a loading screen that suggested lowering your screen resolution if you were having performance issues, but I didn't try it.
It's a shame first impressions have hurt the reputation of this game...

When I first played the demo, I had the same problem many others have complained about: the load screens were excrutiatingly slow. But I bought it anyway, because I got it with a coupon for cheap, and despite the slow screens I had enjoyed the novelty of making swords and spears instead of cakes and dresses. (It probably didn't hurt to have the Norse/Viking theme to attract me to it#.
Anyway, whatever the problem was with the loading screens, it seems to have disappeared between the time I played the demo and the time I bought it, because it doesn't load slowly anymore.
In fact, it now loads faster than the typical Farm Frenzy game does, for me at least.
So now I'm playing it #I haven't finished it yet, and I seem to be pretty far from finishing - there's no map to show your progress#, and it's actually become my favorite Farm Frenzy game.
A couple of little things I like that are improvements over some of the earlier Farm Frenzy games: you can click on the warehouse to see its exact contents, even when your vehicle is away, and the buildings display the number of products it will produce #1-5# without having to hover with your mouse. I also like that on some levels, you can upgrade your animals to make them unaffected by predators and produce more product #you can only upgrade your animals on levels where they give you a 'training hut' to turn them into 'battle' animals#.
I'm finding that it's been just a little bit easier on this game for me to achieve silver and gold #not too easy though# than on other Farm Frenzys. But whether that's because the game is actually slightly easier, or just because I'm getting better at these games the more I play them, I'm not sure. I know the levels I played in the demo didn't strike me as all that easy, so maybe it's the latter.
I love the graphics in this game and there are some fun surprises in later levels that I won't spoil. But don't let the low ratings and reviews about its 'unplayability' - formerly accurate - deter you. I think they fixed the problem, and now the game is as good as any other Farm Frenzy game - maybe even better, depending on your taste. If you like Farm Frenzy games, at least give this one a chance, play the demo.
Sorry for the long-winded review but I really wanted to defend this one because I think it's a great game.
