You've returned from school to visit your father at his famous Jazz Pepper Club during Mardi Gras, but everyone is hypnotized. Have they heard the wrong note?
After their previous success, which was, in my opinion, one of the best games of 2013, Mad Head had some very big shoes to fill. While this game doesn't quite live up to those standards, it is still good in its own right, and I am glad I bought the game.
I'm a sucker for mysteries, but for some reason, this took me a lot longer to get in to than others. I was not really that excited by the story until the end of the demo, and had it not been for the awesome gameplay, I might have skipped this one. I think the developer really needs to work on sucking people in so they don't rely 100% on the gameplay. That being said, there were a couple of really great twists in the demo, so I went ahead and bought it. After the demo, things started to get really exciting. Our killer seemed to be more active; heaps of exciting stuff went on as we raced back and forth all over town trying to catch him, only to be about a couple of minutes too late. Then, after all the “catch the killer” stuff was over, things got a bit more serious as we dived deeper in to the story. We began to uncover the truth after a couple of great twists. We also found out how Frankie died. That's where my issue is with the story. The developers could have done so much better, but the way he died was incredibly stupid and left me asking more questions than it should have. Why was there a gun involved in the first place? Why wasn't the shooter arrested for manslaughter? I was just confused, and I shouldn't have been. The developer could have done a much better job. All this led up to a great ending, where we discovered the real killer. The killer's story was a great one. The game ended 100% conclusively, so there is no need for the bonus chapter whatsoever. Overall, I did enjoy the story, but it didn't have the same thrill for me as previous games.
What really stood out for me in this game was the gameplay. The basic gameplay (HOS and Puzzles) has been jazzed up (no pun intended) to be made much more challenging and fun. The HOS, for example, come in many different forms and each form is fun, but VERY challenging! I'm not going to go in to detail describing each HOS (because it would take too long), but they come in junkpile, interactive junkpile and silhouette forms. The HOS were evenly spaced out throughout the game. There were quite a few there, but not enough to make me sick of them. Like the HOS, the puzzles have been fancied up a little too. They are completely different from the norm and, while not overly challenging, they were incredibly fun and I loved solving each one. I was very glad that a developer out there is not afraid to try new ideas, and it has paid off. The puzzles had very clear instructions, even indicating items with an A and a B, so I knew exactly what to do if I needed help. Like the HOS, the puzzles were evenly spaced out. I do have one gripe about the gameplay, though. In an attempt to make the game more challenging, the developer has replaced the usual black bar tips with “hmm... what could I do with this?” for every single one. This annoyed me to no end, and because of it, I was forced to use a lot of hints. Towards the end of the game, it annoyed me so greatly that I almost considered not finishing it. I quote from my experience while playing: “if I see one more 'hmm... what could I do with this?', I'm going to quit this entire thing!”
This game featured + objects, items that you needed to interact with to complete. These are becoming more and more common now, but they were still a great feature. With a new MadHead game, we see the return of the very successful “minishows” (may be called something different in this one)- story/HOS puzzles that tell you, in detail, the background story of the game. This was key in unraveling the mystery and was also great fun! In a “minishow”, you have four of five objects to find per scene, and with each object you find, you reveal a little bit more of the story. I think there were 5 or 6 of these in the entire game, and they were a joy to play. This is one of the developer's most successful (in my opinion anyway) features. I hope it makes its return in future games!
I definitely would not call this your average HOPA. There are many new features here, and because of the “hm... what could I do with this?” issue, I'd say beginners will struggle with this. I advise beginners to avoid this game. It will challenge most players, no matter what their experience.
The graphics were the usual from MadHead: Top class. Everything was clear and drawn with such excellent detail and wonderful colours. They've done such a wonderful job with character designs too, to the point where the characters almost look and act like real people. A great job by the developers here. However, my biggest issue with the game is the voice-overs and music. I found both to be very annoying. I found the sax solo at the opening cutscene to be very screechy. It actually hurt my ears to listen to it. This almost put me off buying the game. Even the music in the game in general began to annoy me after a while. The voice-overs annoy me too. It's something to do with the accent, I think. I'm not sure. But one voice-over that really, really annoyed me was that of the main character. It was very breathy and acted terribly. Another bad voice-over was that of Luna. Again, her voice was over-acted and sounded terrible, making words longer than they should be, for dramatic effect. Developers must know that sometimes a game can be ruined with bad voice-overs. I think, for their next game, they must make sure the voices are not over-acted, because that just kills a game for me.
FEATURES 4 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Hard and Custom. Differences are the usual and custom lets you set the game the way you want. I played casual for the sake of giving a helpful review. Hint/Skip- both charged at a decent speed for the difficulty I selected. Hint is useful outside HOS. Diary- good for keeping track of events, but sometimes leaves only pictures and no words. Next time, the developer should make sure the diary has words for ALL notes. Map- The map is helpful and interactive. Timer- this lets you know how long you have been playing the game. + items- These are items that must be interacted with to complete. + items are indicated by white + with a red circle around it, which turns green where the item can be interacted with. Minishows- A great new story/HOS puzzle feature, See my description above.
WHAT DO I MISS OUT ON IF I BUY THE SE? Bonus Chapter- absolutely 100% NOT needed. The ending to the SE ties up all loose ends. Built-in Strategy Guide- shows location of collectibles Collectible notes (41)- one in every scene. Collectible morphing objects- one for every HOS. Achievements Instrument workshop Connections- Bonus Chapter only. Replay HOS & Puzzles Wallpapers Concept Art Music
WHICH IS THE BETTER BUY? I chose to go with the SE and was extremely happy with it. That being said, the CE does have a few extras, but none that excite me. I'd advise you to go for the SE.
ON THE GAME LENGTH: The game was over 3 hours for me on Casual mode, which was an ideal length.
WHO WOULD SUIT THIS GAME? Beginners? NO. Steer well clear of this one. I fear that, if you are a beginner and you try this one, you will soon find you are way out of your depth and steer clear of HOPA games altogether. Let's put it this way: I've been playing HOPA games for over 2 years, and even I struggled a little.
Advanced Players? YES. This will test you a bit (like it did with me), but the hint works well, so you will be fine.
Expert players? YES. This will suit you just fine. It was a little challenging for me, so hopefully you will enjoy it!
I don't do the whole “like/love” thing, I go out of five stars. I did not love this game, but I enjoyed it. Based on some minor problems with the story and the gameplay, as well as a major problem with the voice-overs, this game loses a star. I give it a well-deserved four stars. I highly recommend this one.
What started off as a great series was, in my opinion, ruined by the last two games, Spirit Wolf and Stolen Spring. My love of this series has returned with this installment! While I admit the story is not so great, the gameplay here is really something! I don't give out praise lightly, but I'm absolutely amazed by this one!
As I said, the story doesn't really take my fancy. I saw the blurb and didn't think I'd be interested, and I wasn't really. Had it not been for the great gameplay, I would have passed on this game. The whole idea of fairies being trapped and me having to save them just didn't appeal to me. As for the content itself, there wasn't much interesting stuff going on; everything seem to coast by as I expected. The story was really missing that 'wow factor' for me. One positive is the characters. Eipix have created a really lovable group of “people” for this one! I fell in love with each character's personality. It was a really enjoyable experience for me, getting to know every character as I came across them. A job well done to the developers.
But what really amazed me, and what is the sole reason that I am purchasing this game, is the gameplay! For ages, I have been crying out for some new gameplay, and it seems the developers are starting to deliver! There were so many new features. Everything was just a joy. From the jazzed up HOS, to the monocle, to the Q&A puzzle, everything was outstanding!
Let me start with the basics: the HOS. The developers have put a fresh twist on them. They are lengthy and quite enjoyable too. First you had the regular junkpile, then some riddles and them a silhouette, ALL IN THEONE SCENE! I mean, WOW! And that was just the first scene, we got more great HOS after that! They were a mix of junkpile and silhouette, all of which I enjoyed. Even better, there is an alternative for those who don't like HOS. This is a bubbleshooter. Not sure how this works as I didn't play it. The developers really have gone all out with their HOS and for that, they must be applauded. Great job.
Okay, I must state this right now, I absolutely LOVED the Q&A puzzle! It was a fresh, funny and enjoyable take on an interview! What would have been just one incredibly long cutscene in the past has now been transformed in to a work of art. In this puzzle, you must choose to ask 1 of 3 possible questions. Each question falls under a category (humour, compassion, etc.) and if you ask the right one, you pass on to the next question. If you ask the wrong one, you have to keep asking until you ask the right one. I found myself hoping I'd asked the wrong one so I could hear every response! This was a hilarious new feature. It made my day!
Aside from that, the other puzzles were pretty average, but I could solve a couple of them.
It's not just the Q&A puzzle, there are other awesome features too! For one, we have a monocle, which was great. Any place you can use the monocle on will glow, and there will be a puzzle. This is usually something really simple like finding matching symbols, but a great, unique feature! It was also key in unraveling some of the mysterious bits of the story. Another feature is the + items. These are items you must interact with to complete. This usually means adding one item on to another. + items are indicated by a little + above them.
This is definitely not your average HOPA. There are so many great new features in here. Because of this, I don't think I'd recommend for beginners. They might get a little bit confused. On the basic gameplay mechanics of this game, we've got a diary and a map and the hint/skip button, all of which work well. We've even got a custom difficulty, which I thought was brilliant.
The graphics here are the usual Eipix standard: Top class, lots of detail, very clear and a lot of great colours. Eipix have also done a great job with character designs. Graphics-wise, everything in the game was wonderful. This game is set in Ireland, so naturally, we've got Irish/English voice-overs. This was a nice change from the normal American stuff. Great job.
FEATURES 4 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Hard and Custom. Custom lets you set the game the way you like it, which was great. I played Casual, for the sake of the review. Differences in other modes are standard. Hint/Skip- This is the first time I'll say this (and probably the only time), but the hint/skip charged way too fast on Casual mode. I get it's for beginners, but the amount of “hand-holding” here was ridiculous. Hint is useful outside HOS. Diary- used to keep track of events. Great for those who tend to forget important parts of the story (like me!). Map- the map is interactive and quite helpful. It lets you know where you have tasks to complete (Casual mode only). Q&A Puzzle- wonderful new feature that added extra enjoyment to the game. I sincerely hope this makes its return in the future. Monocle- This was another great new feature. It can be used on areas that glow. Sometimes a puzzle will follow, other times not. + items- These are items you must interact with to complete. A great feature. Timer- this lets you know how long you have been playing the game.
CE EXCLUSIVES Bonus Chapter- unsure if needed. Built in Strategy Guide- great for those seeking answers to puzzles, and also shows the whereabouts of collectible items. Collectible fairy shoes (36)- One in every scene. Achievements Bubbleshooter- I'm guessing this is extra bubbleshooter levels. Making of Titania's Crown- unsure what this is Fairy Shoes- a house for all collected shoes. Replay HOS & Puzzles Wallpapers Snapshots Re-watch cutscenes Music
WHICH IS THE BETTER BUY? For only the fourth time since joining here over two years ago, I'm going to purchase the CE. There are lots of great extras in here that I think I'm really going to enjoy. I reckon you'd be happier with either version, but it's the CE for me.
This is, hands down, one of the best games of the year. Definitely game of the year material as well as being one of Eipix's best. So, in light of that, I will not hesitate to award this game five stars. It is almost perfect. The only downer about it is the story, but that type of story is not up my alley anyway, so I will over-look it. This game is worthy of every single shred of praise it gets. I am so happy that a developer has gone all out to give us the ultimate experience. It has paid off and will pave the way for HOPA Games of the future.
I've never really been fond of this series, but this is a massive step up for ERS! For once, they weren't afraid to try something different, something out there, something that was unique to their game... and I loved it! This is ERS's best game in a while and I will be sure to purchase the SE!
The story is good, but in some elements was a little confusing, and seemed to be a bit all over the place. For example, one minute someone was a suspect, then they were a friend, then they were attacked, then they were a suspect again! Then later, I thought someone was dead, only to be told they were alive not even a minute later! It was all a bit much to wrap my brain around. Confusing stuff aside, the story is exciting, and has all the stuff that a murder mystery should: Collecting evidence, analysing stuff, multiple suspects, finding evidence based on appearance, WOW! These are all the good things featured in a murder mystery type book, so I'm glad they were in the game too! Overall, it's a decent story once you get in to it.
The thing that really got me in to this game was the gameplay. Like I said, there was a lot of original stuff in here. My favourite new feature was the magnifying glass. With it, we got to look over everyone we encountered and gain clues based on their appearance. It was like I was Sherlock Holmes, and I loved it! Another new feature was the analyser. Occasionally, we'd come across unknown items (marked in red in the inventory) which we'd have to put through the analyser. From here, we'd be asked a series of questions about the item (is it toxic? what state is it? Etc... This was a fun little minigame and I quite enjoyed every time I got to use it. A great addition.
Let's go back to the basics now, starting with the HOS. As usual, they were a mix of junkpile and silhouette. Some were the standard junkpile, just finding one large group of a certain item. While they were just the same old, same old, I still liked them. Those who don't want to do HOS have the option of doing a puzzle as an alternative, which is great, There are quite a good number of HOS in the demo; not too many, not too little, just right.
The puzzles, although a bit hard for me, were also fun to attempt. I was still able to solve a couple of them though. They were nothing we haven't seen before, which will probably generate some complaints from expert gamers. What I liked about these puzzles was that ERS have given us the opportunity to change the puzzle difficulty. This is great as it shows that ERS are catering for every puzzler, no matter how good (or bad) they are!
Other than the new features, this has all the essentials and controls of a standard HOPA. There are three modes of difficulty, a working hint and the map is helpful. I especially liked the diary in this one, because it has two separate tabs for the story and the evidence. This was great for me, because otherwise I would have had to leaf through all those diary pages just to find the evidence. Just one very, very small complaint: although it wouldn't have been necessary to the game, I would have liked an animal helper.
The graphics are the ERS standard; hand drawn, very detailed and lots of colours. While it is true that these graphics haven't changed since 2012 (maybe longer, but that's as long as I've been playing HOPA games), as the old saying goes, “if it ain't broke, don't fix it”. ERS's graphics are great, and they have no problems, so why bother changing them? A lot of people seem to be complaining that there is no lip-synching with this game, but that doesn't bother me. I tend to focus on the game itself, rather than something so small like no lip movement, I found the voice-overs and music to be relatively standard, so I have no issues here.
FEATURES 3 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Hard. As always, I played Casual. The differences are the usual. What disappointed me is that ERS's custom setting is gone. I liked custom settings, so it was a shame to see they weren't in this one. Hint/Skip- Both recharge at a decent speed for the difficulty I selected. Hint is helpful outside HOS. Diary- Keeps track of events, as well as recording all the evidence you find. This is great as it enabled me to keep track of all story events. Map- The map is helpful and interactive. It tells you where your next action can be performed as well as when locations are complete. Analyser- This is a minigame we come across when we pick up an unknown item. You put said item in to the analyser and must answer a series of questions about it. This was a wonderful feature. Magnifying Glass- Used every time you meet a new character. You use the magnifying glass to find bits of evidence. How many evidence pieces there are varies from person to person. I absolutely loved this feature as it made the game more realistic. I hope it makes an appearance in future games!
CE EXCLUSIVES Bonus Chapter- unsure if needed. Built in Strategy Guide- Great for puzzles. Achievements- mostly gameplay based, a few story based. In the achievements section, there is this book with a paw print on it that tells you some stuff about other were animals (werecat, wererat, etc.). This was quite amusing and a pretty good feature, Collectibles- You collect different things throughout the game, so it's nearly impossible to tell what's a collectible and what's not. This is a great idea from the developers. Music Wallpapers Concept Art Replay HOS & Puzzles Screensavers
WHICH IS THE BETTER BUY? I'm going to wait for the SE. There's absolutely nothing in here that would make me even consider buying the CE. There's nothing in the CE that makes it stand out from the others. All the CE features here are standard. I can wait and advise you to do the same.
I love these types of games, so when I read the blurb, I couldn't resist. I was so pleased that this game turned out to be everything I wanted it to. I really enjoyed the demo from beginning to end, and can't wait to see how the game pans out! Overall, this earns a solid four stars from me, due to the absolutely brilliant, unique gameplay. It would've been a five had the story been a little bit better. Still a wonderful game. I highly recommend it.
I skipped on the CE because my computer needed maintenance, and by the time it was done, I knew the SE was going to come out in a couple of weeks, so I was glad when I finally got a chance to play it. I can honestly say I really enjoyed the trial! I'm not so hot on the story, but the gameplay is fantastic! I'm gonna have a hard time deciding whether or not to buy this one.
As I said, I wasn't all that interested in the story. It took me quite a while to get in to, and even then, it wasn't really that interesting. The thing that sucked for me was that the game differed completely to the previous Grim Facade game (which I really enjoyed). The story itself coasted along as I thought it was going to. There were not many twists. The villain appeared a couple of times, was gone, then appeared for a major confrontation at the end of the demo. The story had great potential, but wasn't executed well, in my opinion. What really lets this story down is the backstory, relating to the headless knight. I wanted this story to be good, but alas, it wasn't. It was another “lover scorned” type thing, and quite frankly, I'm sick to death of it. We see it time and time again in ERS games, and it didn't interest me at all.
The one thing I liked about the story were the characters. I especially liked the character of the newspaper boy. He was very entertaining, popping up in all these places, offering us advice and giving us information. I very much liked the characters of this story. I enjoyed the personalities of everyone I ran in to. I'm glad the developer decided to make their characters likable and give them personalities, instead of just making them someone you talk to a couple of times! This is a great move by the developers. But, to be honest, I was a bit annoyed to find that the detective was a woman. It seems that every protagonist in a game is female these days... Come on, developers! Where are the male heroes?
What I absolutely loved about this game was the gameplay! It was extremely fun, and had I not had bad experiences with great gameplay and bad stories, I would immediately purchase the game. What I especially loved were the HOS. They were different and entertaining! Some were riddles, some involved tasks (feed the animals) and I especially liked the diary-HOS! We had to grab an eraser and find the objects on each page, and when we were done, the page turned. This was an excellent new type of HOS, and I hope to see it return someday! As well as this, there was also an interactive-silhouette scene. I liked that one too. I did find the HOS easy, but they were so entertaining! If you're looking for new HOS, this is for you! There are quite a number of HOS in the demo and they were spaced out well. The puzzles were a bit more difficult than the HOS, but I still enjoyed them. They were nothing new though. I managed to solve all but a couple of them. Like the HOS, there were a good number of them in the demo and they were spaced out evenly.
Of course, it wouldn't be a Grim Facade game without the items shop! There are collectible coins in the game, and those coins can be used to buy items which are necessary to continuing the game. I liked this feature, as we had to use it frequently. The one thing that annoyed me though was the guy gave us a description of every item. Um, I think that we're old enough now to know what a knife does!
Other than that the jazzed up HOS and the shop, this game has all the features of a standard HOPA. Other than the shop, there are no new gameplay features of any kind. No plus objects, no animal helpers, etc... I think that HOPA lovers will enjoy the gameplay side of this game. It even has a custom difficulty, which lets you set the game your way.
The graphics are standard ERS and are great. They are hand drawn and done so with a lot of detail. Each scene is very clear and looks realistic. I also liked the character designs, especially what they did with the fire knight. The way he was done made him look so much scarier! The characters also look very realistic, save for the fact that there is no lip-synching in this game. I don't know why, but ERS have stopped making the mouths of their characters move. It makes them look far less realistic. The voice-overs are standard. I have no issue except for one thing. The main character's voice features in places it shouldn't. They speak after almost every event. I think the developers should leave the speaking parts to just cutscenes and talking to characters. I don't think the main character's voice should appear everywhere. It makes the game annoying in some way.
FEATURES 4 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Hard and Custom. Custom lets you set the game the way you want. Differences for the other three difficulties are the usual. I played Casual, but turned sparkles on active areas off. I managed fine. Hint/Skip- Both charged at a decent speed for Casual. Hint is helpful outside HOS. Diary- keeps track of events, as well as the backstory. Map- I found the map to be useless. It did not show me where my next task was, but maybe that was because I turned sparkles off for active areas. Shop- This has items you need to continue the game. There are also collectible coins to spend at the shop. A nice feature.
WHAT DO I MISS OUT ON IF I GET THE SE? Bonus Chapter- I'm not sure if this is needed, but it has been for the other Grim Facade game I own. The other reviewers didn't mention it though. Built in Strategy Guide- Would have been nice for puzzles. Achievements Collectibles- Collectible butterflies that give you coins to spend in the shop. Pet Bull- You can purchase items for your pet in a little shop. World of Colours Concept Art Wallpapers Replay HOS & Puzzles
WHICH IS THE BETTER BUY? I would be very happy with the SE. There's nothing in the CE that makes the game even slightly worth it.
So, I really enjoyed the trial, but because of bad experiences with buying games that have good gameplay and bad stories, I think I'm going to pass on this one. Even so, I still highly recommend this game!
I'd never played the first Amaranthine Voyage, so I had no clue what to expect from this one. At the start, I was amazed, but as the game wore on, I began to grow bored. Quite honestly, I was glad to be finished with it.
Let me be honest here, the story really isn't the greatest. The opening scene didn't excite me, and the story took a while to get in to. I only really began to get in to it towards the end of the demo, The basic storyline is that a friend of yours approaches you to ask for help to find his missing son, who has gone in to another world of some sort. As I said, the story was really uneventful until the end of the demo. I only bought it because of the gameplay. After the demo, the story did get slightly better. The part of the story with the Guardians was the most exciting part of the game. But once that was finished, the story spiraled downhill. I felt there were some un-necessary elements added that were just put there for length. I think Eipix maybe should have cut down on the whole bit after going in the wrong portal. I think we should have been able to go in the right portal to begin with. The game just seemed a bit long to me. After a disappointing story overall, I was looking forward to a good ending and didn't get one. The ending was conclusive all right, but it was so poor! I couldn't believe how it ended. I felt a bit ripped off. This is the second time this has happened to me in an Eipix game. Come on Eipix, work on your endings! They make a story!
The thing that pleased me most about the game were the HOS. I loved them and enjoyed every time I got to play them. I loved them because they were a little different. Some were word lists, some riddles, some silhouette items, and all were equally fun! As well as this, the HOS were a little longer than most. The HOS are spaced out evenly through the game. There are quite a few HOS too, so HOS lovers will enjoy them. The puzzles were fun too, even if they were just repeats of the ones we've already seen from Eipix. I did enjoy attempting them and was able to solve some. What I highly recommend though, is that the developer put some new puzzles in there. If every puzzle is the same, players will get bored very quickly. Like the HOS, the puzzles are spaced out evenly and there are quite a few of them.
As far as additional gameplay features go, this game has quite a few, and for that, the developers must be commended. To begin with, this game has something that has been missing in recent games- an animal helper! As much as other players don't like it, I love it, and was so glad when I found that this game had one! Our animal helper comes in the form of Bonnie, a dog who can fit in to small spaces. I enjoyed every time I got to use her. My only complaint is that I don't think she was used enough. I would've liked to have been able to use her a couple more times. This game also features a unique gameplay addition- the bow and arrow. This is a minigame similar to the Healer's Kit one in another Eipix game. This time, you have to click on the red dot when it is in the target to shoot things out of range. This was another great feature, but again, Eipix has been a bit stingy. It should have been used a couple more times. I think it was used 4 or 5 times tops (not counting in the final puzzle).
Other than those features, this is your normal HOPA. It's got all the basic features (you know, map, diary, etc.) and even has a custom difficulty level, which is great for those who want to set the game at their own pace.
Graphically, this game is great. It has great detail, great colours and is very clear. Each scene is drawn wonderfully; each HOS is clear. The voice-overs I have a bit of a problem with. I think they were bad. They sounded to me like Americans trying (and failing) to do British accents. Here's a tip- if you want British accents, hire British people!
FEATURES 4 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Hard and Custom. Custom lets you set the game the way you wanted. The differences in the other difficulty are the usual. I played Casual. Hint/Skip- both recharge a little bit quickly. I found myself relying on the hint too much just because it was there. Hint is useful outside HOS. Diary- good for keeping track of story events. Map- The map is useful and lets you know where you have objectives to complete. Bonnie- Bonnie is our animal helper. She is not used as often as I'd like. This is a good feature. Bow and Arrow- similar to another feature in a previous Eipix game. It's a minigame. Again, not used as often as I'd like.
WHAT DO I MISS OUT ON IF I GET THE SE? Bonus Chapter- not needed. Game ends conclusively. Built in Strategy Guide- would have been nice for puzzles. Collectible dog biscuits (48) Achievements Wallpapers Concept Art Photos Biscuit Hunt Replay HOS & Puzzles Souvenir room- basically just one giant HOS Lore Book
WHICH IS THE BETTER BUY? I had a hard time deciding which one to get, but I eventually got the SE. I think you'd be happy with either one. Take your pick. There's a lot of CE Extras in here, so I'd say it's worth the extra money for those of you who like the game.
Well, I'd have to say I'm regretting my purchase! Gameplay wise, this game is wonderful, but the story just sucks! I really wish I had not paid for this game. The story was just way too long, so I ended up losing track of what was happening and I got really bored. I was just waiting for it to finish.
ON THE GAME LENGTH As I said, the game was really long, too long for me. I'd estimate 3.5-4 hours on Casual mode.
WHO WOULD SUIT THIS GAME? BEGINNERS? I'd say be careful. The extra features might throw you off. ADVANCED PLAYERS- go for it. EXPERT PLAYERS- Go ahead, but the easiness of the puzzles might annoy you.
Out of all game series from Elephant, Grim Tales would probably have to be my least favourite. I'd say this is a big improvement for the series! This is my favourite one from this particular set of games. I loved the story and will be purchasing the SE to see how it ends!
The story was extremely fun and interesting. It was one of a kind. I don't think we've seen a courtroom story before. The story goes that your nephew has been charged with the murder of his sister for her inheritance, and you've been called to testify using your power to sense the history of objects by touching them. This is a good plot for a story and was executed quite well, in my opinion. What I enjoyed the most about this story were two things: Firstly, I liked how dark this story was in comparison to others around here. I especially liked the opening cutscene. It shocked me and had me completely sucked in to the story. One reviewer said it was too violent, but I disagree. It goes to show that developers are going all out to impress us, and it's paid off (for me at least). What I really enjoyed about the story was the cutscenes to do with the evidence. I enjoyed how each piece of evidence either went for or against his case. I liked the little backstory of how this piece of evidence came to be, and liked that it was from your murdered niece's point of view. The story was good in the sense that it had quite a few twists and turns. The only criticism I would make is that I really did not like the whole idea of a ghost villain. I thought it was quite stupid and didn't make much sense. Another reviewer noted that they changed the names of the family from Gray to McGray. This will annoy some people, but I didn't care much (I just think McGray is a weird last name). All in all, a decent story that ended well, making me want to play on.
The gameplay is good. I liked the HOS, which were just standard junkpile with a few extra-step objects. The scenes were spaced out well, so I enjoyed playing them. The one thing I cannot stand in a game is having HOS one after the other, pretty much one in every scene, so I was glad that the HOS were spaced out in this one. There were quite a good amount in there, about three in the demo time, I think. I found the HOS quite easy, but enjoyable. The puzzles are your standard fare, but I quite enjoyed attempting them, even though I had to skip all but one. Like the HOS, the puzzles are spaced out, and there are a decent amount of them in the demo.
This game contains + objects, a feature that is becoming somewhat of a standard now. Even so, I still enjoy any game that has them, including this one. The good thing here is that there aren't many + objects. Nothing ruins a feature more than over-using it, so I'm glad this developer was helpful here.
Other than that, in gameplay terms, this is your standard HOPA. There are no helpers, fancy new features or anything of the kind. It includes all the basic features (such as diary, map, etc.). The diary is good and the map is interactive and quite helpful. One thing I didn't like, though, is that the map and the diary are in the same section. You have to click on the map to gain access to gain access to the diary. It is my opinion that the two should always be separate. Lucky I actually used the map, or I would have marked this game down for not having a diary. This game had very clear, easy to follow instructions for both the tutorial and puzzles. Because of this, it will be good for beginners.
The graphics are quite good, but are not the best I've seen from Elephant. They have some good detail in the scenes, but are a bit cartoony, especially in the cutscenes. I thought the character designs could be a little better. Even so, everything is clear and has some good colours. The voice-overs are standard. I have no issue.
FEATURES 3 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced and Hardcore. Differences are the usual. I played Casual. Hint/Skip- both recharge at a reasonable rate for the difficulty I selected. Hint is helpful outside HOS. Diary- The diary contains information about the case as well as keeping track of important story events, which is good for remembering the early events of the story later on in the game. I was disappointed to find that it was in the same area as the map though. Map- The map is interactive and very helpful. It lets you know where your next task is. + objects- These are items you have to interact with to complete. I feel this is becoming a standard feature now, but all the same, it was a good one.
CE EXCLUSIVES Bonus Chapter- I highly doubt it will be needed. Every game I own from this developer has a conclusive ending, and I don't think this one will be different. Built-in Strategy Guide- useful for puzzles. Achievements Collectibles- There are collectible McGray family figures. I'm not sure how many there are. They are relatively easy to spot. I didn't like them. Concept Art (8) Wallpapers (9) Screensaver
This game is 100% story driven. As stated before, I really enjoyed the story and will be waiting for the SE to purchase. I highly advise you to do the same. There is absolutely NOTHING in here that would make me even consider buying the CE. There aren't even replayable HOS & Puzzles. All in all, this is a really enjoyable game and I can't wait to see how it ends.
Do I recommend this for... BEGINNERS? Yes ADVANCED PLAYERS? Yes EXPERT PLAYERS? Maybe for the story, but the gameplay is a little on the easy side.
Your librarian friend wants your help as a journalist – he’s found an ancient book that is still unfinished. Can you save the world in the book before their story ends?
This latest offering from ERS is what I'd call an average game. It's far from bad, but it's also quite far from great. That being said, I think people who are interested in these types of stories will find this one good.
The story is not that interesting for me, but then again, I'm not a fan of this story genre. What I will say, though, is that this story has a lot of potential. I quite liked the idea of being sucked in to a book and saving the book characters from evil. I especially liked how random things would be drawn by whoever it is to prevent you from completing your quest. As others have been saying, I absolutely loved the little bunny character! His lines were awesome and made the story a little bit more fun. I get this is a light-hearted kind of story, and the character of the bunny made what probably would have been an unbearable story in to an okay one. Where this story is lacking for me is the content and excitement. There was absolutely nothing even remotely exciting that happens in the demo. The closest I even got to exciting was the opening cutscene. In fact, I'd say that was the best part of the demo. The story just rolled along as I expected, and the demo ended on a poor note. I wasn't even left wondering what was going to happen next. Again, the review of the story may be partially biased because of my personal interests. I reckon that people who like this sort of story will like this one. This game was full of the cutesy stuff (from talking trees to evil pumpkins), which is classic ERS.
The strongpoint of this game is definitely the gameplay. Yes, it's not overly challenging, but it's quite fun! The HOS, although nothing we haven't seen before, are awesome to play. There are a couple of them in the demo; the types are silhouette and junkpile. Again, both are really easy, but they were a lot of fun! There were about three in the demo, I think, which proves to me that they will be spaced out fairly evenly. If you don't like HOS, you also have the option of switching over to a puzzle, which has two difficulty choices; Casual and Hard. I was kind of shocked at how hard this one was! This was a very challenging aspect of an otherwise un-challenging game. The puzzles were very fun too, and quite unique (for ERS at least). I only came across two in the demo, but both were awesome and very easy. The puzzles were tracking the movements of objects to collect them, and clicking on beavers without gas masks to put them to sleep. Again, both were EXTREMELY easy. Expert players may not like this,
This game also has + objects. These are items you have to join together with another one to complete. There aren't a lot of them in the demo, but they're still a great feature in my opinion. They're becoming more and more standard, but each game with + objects makes the game more fun in my opinion. I would have liked to see a couple more of them.
Other than that, this is your standard HOPA. There's no fancy new features, animal helpers or anything of the kind. I reckon this would be a good game to start off with if you're a beginner. Expert players, however, might not enjoy this one as much.
With an ERS game comes the great ERS graphics. These graphics are the usual; hand drawn, detailed and colourful. I absolutely loved the colours in this one. There were a lot more colours than usual. The scenes are also clear and the character designs are good. A very good job by ERS on their graphics. The only issue I really have is that the characters' lips do not move as they used to. This makes the game less realistic. I do have a slight issue with the voice-overs. I did not like the voice of Amelia. I thought her voice was over-acted and awful. It's just my personal opinion though. I don't have a problem with any other voices.
FEATURES 4 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced, Hard and Custom. Custom lets you set the game the way you want it; the other difficulties have differences that are the usual. I played Custom, set hint to 30 and Skip to 40 (seconds). Hint/Skip- The hint is useful outside HOS. Diary- keeps track of events. Good for remembering story details. Map- The map is interactive and helpful to an extent. It lets you know where there are current objectives, but it doesn't let you know exactly where your next one is. + objects- These are items you have to combine with another to make one inventory item. These are a great feature.
CE EXCLUSIVES Bonus Chapter- unsure if needed. You can never tell with this developer. Some games are conclusive, some aren't. Built in Strategy Guide Achievements- All gameplay based and all were for helping citizens. None were HOS based that I could see. A bit of a disappointment. There aren't many of them either. Collectible paint jars- only found 2 in the demo. Wallpapers Concept Art Screensavers Music Replay Movies Replay HOS & Puzzles Workshop- pictures of the team developing the game
Overall, this isn't actually a bad game. I enjoyed the demo, but I'm going to pass, as I wasn't a fan of the story. I think a lot of people will like this game. If you're going to buy this one, I strongly recommend you wait for the SE as there's nothing in the CE that makes it worth buying. This is one of the most fun games I've played in a while. I highly recommend the trial!
From almost every game from this developer, it was either good story or good gameplay, never both. Now I can finally say that we have one with both! This is a great game with a gripping story and fun gameplay. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end.
The story is actually quite interesting and is similar to another game I have played that is one of my all-time favourites. It is a gripping story with a good opening. It's executed quite well. The opening is done well. The story had quite a number of twists in it, ones that I weren't expecting. The basic storyline is that you are a detective and have been called to the sanitarium to investigate their treatment of patients. What I liked about this story was the files. They told the story of each patient. I liked how these were presented. Each character had a story similar to their personalities/occupations (e.g. the newspaper owner was told everything ever written in his newspapers was a lie). They made the game more realistic and enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the villain, Gerome Swens. He was portrayed in a way that made ever encounter with him exciting. The one thing I didn't like, however, was that it was never explained why he was actually doing what he was doing. The one essential part to a story is explaining why the villain is evil and that was missing here.
Well, now that I've talked about the characters and stuff, I guess I should talk about the content. The story was relatively good. There were a couple of nice twists in there. I especially enjoyed the ending; there was a good twist I never saw coming. It was a great story from beginning to end; not once did it slow down. It has a great ending and also ends conclusively. A really good job done by the developers.
The developer really deserves credit here for their HOS. There are quite a few different types and all of them are fun and have varying difficulty levels. There are three types: standard junkpile, replace the object and silhouette. The HOS are spaced out fairly evenly in the game and there are a decent amount in there. Most of the scenes were the replace the object type, but I didn't mind. I still rather enjoyed them. The puzzles actually a bit hard. I had to skip most if not all of them. That being said, I still enjoyed playing them. Like the HOS, the Puzzles are spaced out fairly evenly. They are nothing we haven't seen before.
One thing I enjoyed about the gameplay was the significantly reduced amount of backtracking. Don't get me wrong, there's still a fair bit, but there's no where near as much as in previous games. Constant backtracking annoys me quite a lot in games, so I'm glad the developer has cut down on it here. At the end of the game, there is an option to take a quiz,
Other than the multiple HOS, this is your standard HOPA. It's got no special features of any kind and has all the essential stuff (diary, map, etc.).
If I'm honest, the graphics are a bit of a let-down. The cutscenes are good, but the graphics in general aren't as detailed as those from other games. The character designs are also poor. This is the one sour note on a good game. The voice-overs are standard. I have no issue.
FEATURES 3 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced and Hard. Differences are the usual. I played Casual. Hint/Skip- both recharge at a reasonable rate for the difficulty I selected. Hint is useful outside HOS. Diary- keeps track of events. Map- the map is helpful and interactive
WHAT DO I MISS OUT ON IF I BUY THE SE? Bonus Chapter- not needed. Game ends conclusively. Built-in Strategy Guide- useful for puzzles Achievements Collectible canes (31) Bonus Mini-games Concept Art
WHICH IS THE BETTER BUY? Most definitely the SE. The CE has nothing in it to make me even consider buying it and the SE game ends conclusively, so there's no need for the Bonus Chapter.
Overall, I really enjoyed this game. It earns a solid four and a half from me, with the only reasons it misses out on a five being the poor graphics and a couple of problems with the storyline. It's a great entertainer and you'll be sure to love it. I 100% recommend the SE.
ON THE GAME LENGTH The game is quite lengthy. I was shocked to find I had not yet entered the second chapter when the demo ended. There are 4 chapters and each chapter is quite long, about 45 minutes to one hour in length. So you're looking at a 3.5-4 hour game on Casual Mode.
Professor Ashmore, the same man who so kindly took you in and raised you as his own has been murdered. It’s up to you to find out why, but are you prepared for what truths may be uncovered?
This is hands down one of the worst games I have played in a long time. I have almost nothing positive to say about the game. I highly advise you steer clear of this one.
The one positive about this game that I can think of is that the story did have potential. It has been done many times before, but it's got an interesting plot and, had I not quit during the demo, might have turned out to be very interesting. The basic plotline follows the death of the main character's adopted father. She (surprise, surprise male players, it's a female main character!) must return to the island to find out what really happened and who she “really” is. Again, this has been done a lot, but I felt the story had real potential.
The gameplay was a huge let-down for me. The HOS for instance, were awful. Sometimes there would be morphing objects! This was a disaster for me. Extra-step objects I can handle, but not morphing objects! My eyesight is not very good, so how on earth am I meant to look for other objects as well as trying to spot morphing ones? Bad move, developers. Bad move. The amount of HOS was pretty good; in the 15 minutes I played (that was a much as I could manage), I found 2 HOS. This indicates to me that there would have been a few. The puzzles were also quite easy. I encountered one and solved it almost instantly. This, as well as other reviews, indicates to me that all the puzzles will be very easy. A bit of a let-down. Besides that, there were other elements of the gameplay that just annoyed me. For example, we had to find an old lady's cat. I zoomed in on a scene and the cat was clearly there and I could see it looking at me, but the game wouldn't let me take it because I hadn't lit the lantern. It just said “it is too dark here”. Um... it can't be that dark if I can see a black cat. Just saying.
This is your standard HOPA with no additional features of any kind. There are no animal helpers, + objects or anything. Overall, the game had a very easy feeling to it. Experienced players will hate this one.
The graphics are rather cartoony. They have an amateur-ish feel to them. One positive of the graphics is that the scenes are clear and drawn with a bit of detail. The character designs, however, look cartoony. One of the voices really annoyed me in this game. The main character sounded like a robot. She didn't sound human at all. Her words were cut-off a lot. This annoyed me. Other than that, the voice-overs are fine. The music in the game also annoyed me so much that I had to switch it off. Repetitive and loud animal noises were played constantly, and the music was repetitive. There is nothing worse in a game than annoying sounds/music. This drove down the enjoyment factor for me.
I noticed a few typos in the game. For example, the tutorial message said “green items could be a morphing items”, when it should have said morphing item. The coffin a HOS said 1790-18552 instead of 1852. That means the person either died at over 10,000 years old or this was a mistake. I'm going for the second option. This game really needed some extra proof-reading before it was published. It would be rather embarrasing for a developer to know they had made such amateur mistakes.
FEATURES 2 modes of difficulty: Casual and Advanced. Differences are the usual. I played Casual. Hint/Skip- both recharged at a reasonable rate for the difficulty I selected. Hint is helpful outside HOS. Diary- keeps track of events. Good for remembering important story details. Map- Interactive and helpful Bonus Chapter Achievements Collectible leaves Concept Art Wallpapers Replay movies Replay HOS & Puzzles Music
Overall, this is an absolutely disastrous game, and thus, I must give it a one. star rating, something I have not had to do in a long time (My last one star review was written June 23, 2013). This game is truly awful in every meaning of the word. I barely managed to play through 15 minutes. Even though it has all the CE Extras at a SE price, I would not buy this game if someone offered me money for it. I think we have a winner for worst game of 2014.
I don't recommend this game.

Dark Dimensions: Somber Song
Townspeople flee as the black smoke covers their town. Can you close the dark dimension, before it's too late?
I absolutely loved this game when I trialled the CE, so of course, when the SE came out, I had to buy it immediately! My opinion remains the same after completion: This is the best Dark Dimensions game (and the best from Daily Magic) ever!
The story is great in my opinion. It was strong all the way through. It started off wonderfully and brought you right in to the action from the get-go. The opening cutscene got me in to the game, and if a story does that, you can tell it's going to be a good one. This one certainly was! The story was great and exciting all the way up to the end of the demo. It ended on a great note, so of course, I had to continue. Most stories tend to decline slightly after the demo, but this one kept going at the pace it had set earlier in the game. It had its fair share of twists and turns and was really enjoyable overall. I must express my absolute LOVE for the ending! It really surprised me, but it was wonderful! I was so happy at how it panned out. No wonder they say everyone loves a happy ending! The ending is also 100% conclusive, so there's no need for the bonus chapter. If I had to criticise one thing about the story, it would be that some parts of it were really confusing. For example, until halfway through the story, I wasn't sure if Lydia was good or evil. I was also confused as to who was related to who in some parts of the game. Overall, it was an excellent story. I loved it from beginning to end.
I have to commend the developers on their gameplay. It's so good! This developer is known for jazzing up their HOS and they have done so again with this one. They've actually made the HOS a bit difficult for a change! The HOS were fun, VERY challenging (I had to use the hint multiple times) and just all-around awesome. The HOS all come in the one form- a very interactive HOS. Every item needs to be used on something to get another item. This continues on until you get your last item- the one to go in your inventory. I absolutely loved these. But, truth be told, I did begin to tire of the HOS a little past halfway through the game. There are A LOT of HOS in the game. That being said, I was still happy. There are not many puzzles in this game, which may please HOS lovers. There are definitely more HOS than puzzles. The puzzles were fun to attempt, and were a mix of hard and easy. I had to skip a few, but others I could solve. This proved to me that this developer catered for puzzle players of all skill levels. I commend them on this. The ratio of HOS:puzzles is a bit off; there are a lot more HOS than puzzles in this game, which may not sit well with those who like puzzles.
Other than the jazzed up HOS, this is your normal HOPA with no animal helpers or any other fancy new features. I found this to be nice. However, I don't think I'll recommend this to beginners, seeing as the HOS have been changed a bit and the game itself is actually quite challenging. I must mention that the diary, which was a brilliant feature in the last DD game (City of Ash) was missing in this one. This was a bit sad for me as I often rely on the diary to remember key elements of the story. I hope this developer learns from their mistake and includes a diary in their next game. It may not seem important, but it actually is!
The graphics were great. They were drawn with a lot of detail and with some great colours. The art is wonderful, as are the character designs. Every scene is clear and drawn well. The voice-overs are standard. I have no issue.
FEATURES 3 modes of difficulty: Casual, Advanced and Hard. Differences are the usual (hint/skip charge, sparkles, etc.). Hint/Skip- Both recharge at a reasonable speed for the difficulty I selected. Hint is helpful outside HOS. Map- The map is interactive and is quite helpful. It lets you know where your active tasks are. I used it quite often. Re-watch cutscenes- Cutscenes can be re-watched. They are accessible by clicking on the map.
WHAT DO I MISS OUT ON IF I BUY THE SE? Bonus Chapter- not needed. Game ends 100% conclusively. Strategy Guide- helpful for puzzles. I did have to use the walkthrough a couple of times in the game. Collectible music sheet scraps (30- 3 scraps x 10 sheets)- Once all are collected, Match-3 levels are unlocked. Flashbacks- available after collecting all three scraps for one page. Can be viewed outside of the game. Wallpaper Music Developer Diary- pictures of developers making the game Concept Art
WHICH IS THE BETTER BUY? I bought the SE and I was quite happy with it. There wasn't anything in the CE that prompted me to buy. The bonus chapter is not needed and you can access a walkthrough for free online. I'd definitely say the SE is the better buy.
Overall, I can find very little to fault about this game. The only major problem for me was the exclusion of the diary and the confusing parts of the storyline. As I said in the CE review, this is the best game by the developer and really is a step up from previous games. So I see no other alternative than to give this game 5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd advise you to be careful if you're a beginner- the game was quite challenging. I reckon the rest of you will love this!
ON THE GAME LENGTH I don't time my gameplay, but I estimate this to be 3- 3 ½ hours on Casual mode.
