I don't usually write reviews, but wanted to write one for this game.
I just finished the main chapter and have yet to delve into the bonus chapter, but have really enjoyed this game thus far. I know that there are some people that would disagree with me in that respect (some people have given negative reviews) but it would seem that a majority of players would agree with me.
I won't go into many details concerning the game (so many people already have) so I'll just say a few things.
The first is the fact that you have three game options to choose from; Easy, Normal and Hard... and you have the option of being able to show the beyond (morphing objects) and collection objects on the map (again, this is optional). I liked and used the feature because I save my games pretty regularly and copy the saved game to an entirely different folder (that way if the game crashes or I run into a glitch I can begin playing the game from my last "save point" than having to begin the game all over again). I did have to do that a couple of times with this game, and instead of pulling my hair out of my head trying to figure whether or not I got the morphs and collection objects from any given scene, I just had to open up my map and it would show me which ones I needed to pick up again.
The other thing I wanted to say is the fact the game map is your friend. It's a jump map, and it highlights which area/zone of the game you need to visit, and it highlights the objectives in those areas as well.
All in all I thing that this is a really decent game... it's the best game that I've played in a long time, and I play a LOT of Hidden Object Games (I also purchase all the other games from this game series as well... I hope all the others are just as good).
This game wasn't too bad until I got to the part where there was a mini-game, that required the player to configure a key into a particular shape in order to open a door. I was unable to bypass the mini-game (there was no skip function) and since I'm really bad at puzzles and mini-games (I was unable to figure out how to configure the key even WITH the strategy guide solution) I had no choice but to uninstall this game and move on to something else. So I give it a 1 star rating and will give this or any other game a low rating if the developers opt not to include a skip button for min-games and puzzles. I am disappointed with Mad Head. Generally I like their games, but this time it was a bust.
There really isn't much that I can say about this game other than the fact that I uninstalled it within 5 minutes of playing the demo.
It started out by having to put several file folders into their proper bins. After that it was just cut scene after cut scene.
When the game started out there were voice overs, however, in a short time it changed to text only. The voice overs might pick up again later into the game but I didn't play long enough to find out.
There was only 1 item in my inventory when I stopped playing the game- with all the cut scenes there wasn't any interaction at all.
This game was pretty terrible in my opinion. Some people might like it but I suggest that other fishies try it before they buy it.
I purchased this game with a free game coupon, but if I had to pay full price for the game I still think it would have been worth it.
Graphics are pretty sharp and clear for the most part, however, the cut scenes can be somewhat fuzzy at times.
There are no morphing objects as far as I can tell; there are seven Doctor Goodwin Awards and fourteen radioactive items to collect.
The inventory bar does not lock- something that I find to be a bit irritating.
There is a map that does not allow you to jump from location to location, however, the hint button (which provides a player with text hints) does have a function which allows you to jump to various locations... though I wish the developer had used a jump map instead.
The hint button recharges very quickly (almost instantly).
The skip function works with puzzles (which don't seem to be that difficult) but it also works with HO scenes as well. If you prefer adventure and would like to pass up on the HOS allowing a player to skip them comes in handy.
The voice overs in the game are pretty decent- mouth movement is pretty much in synch with them.
I'm not a game expert and so I don't know how challenging this game would be for players that are. For me this game is good entertainment and so I'll leave it at that.
Other fishies that have posted reviews have done an outstanding job of describing the mechanics of this game... there's no point in repeating what has already been said.
But what a game it is! I have never played a HOG that can hold up a candle to this game.
Fact is, Mad Head Games has ruined my gaming experience because compared to this game every other HOG that I have played is flat out boring.
Confront an ancient evil and uncover your true! After a startling revelation changes your world forever, you must embark on an epic journey to save mankind.
This is really a "bare bones" CE. You get all the usual extras along with a bonus chapter, but that's it. For someone that can't afford the cost of a CE it would really be in their best interest to wait for the SE to come out.
Insofar as the game goes, the graphics aren't the best that I've seen but aren't all that bad once you get accustomed to them.
The music is ok. The storyline is ok as well.
The game has a hint/skip function that charges/recharges in a reasonable amount of time.
My biggest "beef" with the game is the fact that it isn't done in chapters, but rather one long continuous chapter... which makes for a strategy guide that is clumsy to use.
The strategy guide "resets" itself once you log out of the game, and so you have to find out where you left off each time you log into the game for a new session.
This becomes a bit aggravating because you have to "surf" through multiple pages before you find the proper place... it's almost like scanning one long run on sentence.
But the game does have a map that transports you from location to location. In addition, areas that have actions to perform are listed on the map as well.
Pair those two things with a decent enough hint system, and the strategy guide becomes less of a factor (I've only referred to the strategy guide a time or two).
This is not the best game that I've played, but it's far from being the worst. It gets an "ok" rating from me.
The graphics in this game are very good; the music is ok.
There are four modes of game play to choose from; casual, experienced, masterful, and the ability to customize all game difficulty options to your own personal preference (I like the option of being able to set your hint/skip recharge time for 15 to 90 seconds in duration).
After gathering several pieces of a map and assembling them, you are provided with a jump map. You have the ability to change whether or not certain information is listed on the map (from your customizable game settings menu).
There are a lot of extras in this game- find 34 acorns that you come across throughout the game, 5 Forest Fruit, 11 morphing objects... and an additional 30 achievements.
The puzzles that I have encountered (if you can call them that) are fun but not especially difficult.
The game is interactive (and not just in HO scenes) with respect to what you do with objects that you find and what you do with the objects... which makes for an interesting game.
*Review of completed game... still working on the bonus chapter.
This was not a terrible game (although it's not the best game that I've played either).
The storyline is not the greatest and the game seemed a bit on the short side (I played the trial, purchased the game and completed it within a couple of hours... bonus chapter not withstanding).
The graphics were ok but nothing to brag about.
There seemed to be a HOS in almost every location visited in the game and items that went into the inventory were almost always from HO scenes.
Insofar as HO scenes are concerned it was primarily list with a few that were a bit interactive. In addition you are required to find three of this, four of that, and two of this that and the other thing etc. in most every HOS.
You are required to find coins along the way (usually four or five in every scene) which can be a bit tedious (some are a bit hard to find). Coins are needed to open treasure chests throughout the game. Yes, it was slightly irritating... but it is a hidden object game after all.
The bonus chapter requires that you use a special lens to discover hidden clues... and this is important. I've come across at least one puzzle that can't be completed until you scan it with that special lens.
All in all this is not the best game out there... but it's certainly not the worst that I've played either.
I like when a game "grabs" me right from the start.
This one didn't.
I'm not familiar with this developer... it's the first time that I've come across a game which they have produced.
The graphics were a bit ugly (in my opinion) and not as well done as I've experienced with other HO games..
There is a map (although it's not a very good one).
There are only two modes of play (Casual and Challenge), and as with most SE games there is no strategy guide.
The hint works well enough in HO scenes, but is not the best hint system otherwise.
You can't change cursor mode in this game and have to use the custom cursor that this developer provides. Unfortunately the cursor moved around a bit more slowly and "dragged" a bit... something that I've never encountered in other games.
A definite "try before you buy" Hidden Object game.
There are six chapters in this game plus an additional bonus chapter. All in all, however, the length of time it took me to complete the first six seemed to be a bit too short to justify the cost of buying the collectors edition.
Additionally, there are no real "extras" to the CE (no achievements, no beyond objects etc.) but rather the standard run of the mill extras (concept art, wall paper, repeatable HO scenes) which doesn't even include a soundtrack (not that any of those extras are of any real interest to me... I'm just saying).
This is mostly an adventure game- there are only a handful of puzzles and a sprinkling of HO scenes. On the plus side, many of the objects in the inventory are interactive and there are a few objects in the HO scenes that require interaction as well (and those interactions require for or five steps before you achieve the final goal).
Although interaction kept the game somewhat interesting (it did require a bit of thinking) it was still not worth the price of a CE. I really do expect more bang for my buck if I'm paying extra money for a hidden object game.
I would recommend the SE version of the game, but can't say the same for the CE.
