This is the first in this series and I must say that it shows great promise. Although there are ghosts involved, it is a mystery. The storyline is much more original than I have seen in quite a while (unfortunately it still has the ubiquitous broken zipper). My only complaint, which is reflected in my score, is that I found the minigames too easy. The good news is that can be fixed in future games. Besides, some were quite original. The bottom line: I wholly recommend this game and look forward to future releases.

I hope this is going to be a series, because it shows so much promise. It's a true detective story without supernatural powers, a cute little sidekick, or a demon trying to capture you souls or dominate the world. If I had any criticism, which is very minor, some of the games were a bit too easy for my tastes, but they were inventive. Bottom line: buy it, buy it , buy it!
I don't ordinarily write reviews, but I felt compelled to do so on behalf of this game. I was very reluctant to purchase this game due to its low ratings. However, I found myself without any game to play having gone through all the other HOG/Adventure game available; so, I bit the bullet and bought it. I am so glad I did. I thoroughly enjoyed this game, in fact, it is among my favorites. The graphics are gorgeous the mini-games are mostly original and challenging, and there's no cute little talking animal to help along the way. So what if it's not historically accurate? It's INSPIRED by the Mexican culture, This is not a sociology class, it's a game. None of games in this series, or any series for that matter, are intended to be educational, except perhaps the Smithson ones. Just enjoy the play.
Since I had a coupon that was ready to expire I decided to ignore the other reviews and give the game a chance. I am really glad I did! So what if it doesn't really follow the poem--I bet the majority of players haven't even read it. Besides, this is not American Literature class. And yes, I don't like the way the tried to make Dupone look more masculine--he's a gentleman, so should be clean shaven. Finally, the fiery eyes of the villainess were a bit much, but it remains a detective story and not a fantasy--no magic potions or portals. The fact is, none of those things have anything to do with how the game plays. It is primarily an adventure game rather than a HOG, which is just fine by me as I prefer solving puzzles to searching through a clutter of objects that don't really relate to the game (sometimes, not even the time period of the game). Try it, you might light it.
I just finished the CE version of this game and I must say it is among my all time favorites and I've played them all! There were no cute little sidekicks to help me along, I didn't have to save the souls of my lover/sister, etc., nor was the world under attack by some demon accidently released after being imprisoned for thousands of years by some ancient wizards--AND all the zippers worked! On a serious note, the graphics were gorgeous, the voiceovers were believable and the games were, in the most part, original. My only complaint, and it's a small one, is that I have a very difficult time finding the morphing objects in the HOGs. Largely because they were not objects at all but small etchings (at least the ones that I finally found). Bottom line: Buy this game. You won't regret it.

I'm not so sure why some reviewers have a problem with this storyline. Unlike many other developers, they made an attempt to make it original--no ancient demon bent on conquering the world accidentally released after imprisoned by some ancient civilization, not trying to rescue sister/brother/lover trying to steal their souls, and no cute little talking creature sidekick, etc. Plus, all the zippers worked! There are some original mini-games as well. Bottom line,, it was worth buying.
