I bought the CE, but I assure you that the extras are not necessary to enjoying this treasure. The "warning" about the horror factor is legit, but it's really not super disturbing for most adults, I wouldn't think. Less gory than your average episode of Supernatural. This is one of the few games I've played all the way through twice. Great atmosphere, lots of exploration and puzzles to solve. The map gets you where you need to be when you are stumped and usually you can figure it out from there.
Your sister has been missing for ten years when suddenly you get a letter from her. Follow the notes and clues to find her and unravel the mystery of your own childhood and origins. This is part one of (at least) two in the series and I cannot WAIT for the next installment. The CE gives you a preview game which looks to be even creepier than this one.

The other reviews sum up the plot nicely, so I'll get to the meat of it, so to speak:
HOG SCENES: There are some issues with the HOG scenes having multiples of the same items and you'll have to find the ONE that they are wanting you to click on. A couple of items were misnamed.
SCARY BITS: If you hate sudden noises or jumpy-outy bits in movies, relax! The scary bits are reserved for the cutscene animations and it's nothing traumatic. You can pretty much tell when something spooky is about to happen. Nothing jumps out at you or blasts you in the headphones as you are playing the game.
PLOT: Eh, typical slightly confusing storyline, but since this is PART ONE OF THREE (yeah, you get a "to be continued") at the end, hopefully the plot will start to make sense. There are some spoilers in the EXTRAS, so don't poke around in the "Alternate World" folder if you don't want to sort of figure out what happened.
I love scary supernatural movies and this was really about as scary as you can make a HOG type adventure. Nothing to outrun or shoot at. Just clues to find, doors to unlock (OH! Check out grandfather's books on the mantle for a good chuckle) and a mystery to solve.
This is a very pretty game with lovely music to boot. The minigames are super easy and the hidden object scenes are relatively easy to complete as well, so there's no real mental challenge as far as the games within the game is concerned. You do have to do a bit of running around to complete tasks, but again, nothing too strenuous. I think this game would be fine for kids and those wanting a pleasant distraction. Nothing to complain about, but nothing extraordinary, either.
This review is based on an incomplete demo. I got tired of the hidden object scenes and the sluggish scene changes. This is a very middle-of-the-road hidden object game with some okay puzzles thrown in. Nothing awful, I just found it a bit tedious.

I played this waaaay back when it was new to BFG and just laughed my way through it, despite some pretty sticky puzzles. It's a really good game and the witty, silly dialogue just amps it up a notch.
Rescue a young girl from the Penumbra Motel. Solve puzzles, unravel a long standing mystery of death and disappearances in this heart-pounding adventure game!

Not a single hidden object scene in the entire game! Explore creepy locations, talk to ghosts and eccentrics, and rescue your friend's daughter from the bad guy. This is a very long game and the puzzles can be very tricky. If you enjoy exploring and using your noggin, then do yourself a favor and get Penumbra Hotel.

Although the gist of the "story" is that you are trying to gather materials to rebuild great works of architecture, there is nothing more to this game than making matches, with the occasional power up available for purchase or through matching test tubes. You don't actually get to see the buildings being restored as in some games of this nature, nor is there any actual purchasing of materials or using them. Just level after level of match-3 boards. If that is your cup of tea, you'll enjoy this. It was okay but I felt a bit let down.

While I really enjoy atmospheric spooky games, this one was so dark and desaturated that I began to dread the frequent HidObj scenes. Luckily for me, the hints recharge quickly, because there were objects I would never have found otherwise.
I only played the hour demo and didn't get very far, I don't think. Most of my time was spent squinting at the screen. The few random puzzles I found were challenging and I admit I skipped one or two for time's sake. Without the skips, this could be a very long game.

I was prepared for "just another" match three game, but this one was different and challenging. You start by creating a couple of different creatures by matching the basic elements. Then, by matching the creatures you make, you create even MORE creatures. I played the entire hour demo and did not finish out the sea creatures. I like a game that takes me a long time to finish. This one is stress-free, relaxing and enjoyable.

The plot, dialogue and voice acting seemed geared for a preteen audience but the puzzles and challenges would be too difficult for kids, so I'm not sure who the intended audience is. I liked the actual gameplay, but the voice acting was tedious and the dialogue was cheezy. Even the overall plot is pretty ridiculous. Still, I played through the entire demo because it WAS enjoyable, and it seems like a lot of folks actually like the voiceovers, so I suggest everyone at least try it out.
