I, like others, purchased this after reading so many positive reviews and trialing it, but it went downhill after that. Unless you're desperate, I don't really recommend it. It was one of the more forgettable games I've played, and the storyline (the little there was of it) was not incorporated well. Graphics of people were just bad and too cartoony for my taste. WAYYYY too much back and forth. Sorry, but this one was not my cup of tea, between its cliche-ness, lack of originality, and tedious-at-times gameplay.
I don't recommend this game.

BASED ON COMPLETED GAME & BONUS
In a nutshell, it's better than most games, just not as good as Hope Diamond - but few games are as good as that in my opinion. My thoughts:
THE GREAT:
-Adventure, adventure, adventure!! This is for all you adventure lovers out there. Trust me, you don't want to miss this game. Very exciting and action-packed in comparison to most HOPAs. This by itself made the game for me.
-Most of the graphics (still scenes) were really beautiful and up to typical Eipix standard, which is better than many out there.
-I thought the HOPs were great and creative. Don't judge those based on Demo only reviews. They got better after the demo in my opinion.
-Interactivity - some of what I think people are calling puzzles are just interactions with the environment, which we've seen more frequently in the more recent games. That being said...
THE OK or MIXED FEELINGS:
-True, most (not all) of the puzzles (mini-games) were a bit too easy. They never has been Eipix's strong point, though. If they weren't so darn good at adventures, I wouldn't love them so much because I LOVE puzzles. But somehow I still manage to overlook that.
-Cut scenes. See, I love good cut-scenes, and they had lots of fun ones here that really developed the story and created intensity/excitement. But, so many of them were really pixelated, as others have mentioned. HOWEVER, MOST games don't try to do as difficult and action-packed of cut scenes as this...so...it's hard to be super judgey. I would rather they have pixelly cut scenes that make this as much of an adventure as it was rather than not have them at all, personally. And to be fair, they did keep them short.
-Also, for the record, I love their trademark blend of animated-real people. Except for when they are really pixelated and/or they looked weirdly different from their "cameo" self, both of which happened a few times.
THE UGLY:
-Oh my lord, Eipix, you give us all these custom options but don't give us the option of turning off the "YOU FOUND A COLLECTIBLE!!!!" notification OR turning off the Objectives Notifications?? This was beyond annoying. Truly.
-Need a bit more work on the music section...that main theme is repeated too much, even though I can tell they are variances...they need to branch out a bit more.
-The strategy guide. I don't use these much, but when I occasionally do, I expect them to help me out. But they did not include solutions to the HOPs. Weird. Maybe it was intentional, so you can't cheat on the achievement for completing all HOPs without a hint?
NOTE ON DIFFICULTY: Eipix gives you more custom difficulty options than most developers. I don't think it's fair to complain about it being too easy unless you played with no tips and no contextual pointers (which is true for some of the complainers, but not all). I played with tips turned off and I felt it was a reasonable level of difficulty in terms of the gameplay itself, while HOPs were a mix of moderately challenging and easy, and most of the puzzles as mentioned before were on the easy side. I thought after reading the reviews that the gameplay would be too easy and therefore boring, but I do NOT feel this was the case.
Despite some annoyances and a bit of a drop in visual quality/puzzle difficulty from Hope Diamond, I still think this game is a solid 4.5 (rounded up because it's current rating is lower than that). I think if this game came out today and we hadn't played Hope Diamond before, we'd be jumping all over it more than I'm seeing. Just my opinion.
CE or SE? I rarely buy CEs, but I did for this one. You get a lot of cool extras, more than your average CE I feel. Lengths of main game and bonus were also very good. AND you get to throw tomatoes at bad guys to unlock one of the extras in the end. 'Nuff said.
I recommend this game!

This is still one of my very favorite HOPAs. That's saying a lot, because I play HOPAs a *lot*. I'm shocked the reviews aren't higher for this one - on par with Nevertales in my opinion (albeit quite different). So creative, beautiful, different, endearing, engaging - the story is great, the gameplay is great. I just can't say enough good things about this one. The developers went out on a limb and put a lot of love into this one. You can't say it isn't different!!! And for me, that was in a very, very good way.
NOTE: I am pretty sensitive to violence, in particular violence against women, but I do not agree with reviewers that were disturbed by the description of the woman who was killed. I also do not agree that this is offensive to Christians unless you are just against any pagan themes (which is totally fine if you are, but that's not the same as saying the game is anti-Christian and in my opinion is not a reason to give it a bad review). It is, however, fairly anti-Puritan...but, ummm, I guess you'd be bothered by that if you actually support the very real horrors that the Puritans enacted on innocent women 300 years ago, which is when those events took place in the story. In other words - some Puritans DID do things like what is depicted in this story (witch trials, anyone?) I don't understand how that pertains to modern-day Christianity. Plenty of people from every religion (and non-religions) have been cruel and intolerant at times. This is simply a fictitious rendition of the dark, yet historically accurate, side of some of the Puritans in that particular time period. Lastly, that aspect is a VERY minor part of the overall game. It is so bright and whimsical and charming, yet serious and emotionally moving somehow at the same time - it really is unlike any other game I've played.
I recommend this game!

First off, I recommend you read the reviews for the CE since there are more of them, and the reviews for the SE thus far are too few to be representative.
This developer stands out from most of the others by their depth of story. No two-dimensional bad guys to be found here, although you will not know that just by the demo. To be honest, the demo does not come even close to giving you an idea of how good the story is in this game. It is better than the second and more similar to the fantastic first game in this trilogy, while still being creatively different. I only wish more developers realized the importance of an engaging, multi-dimensional, and emotionally moving story like this one!
I recommend this game!

The atmosphere for this game is thick enough to slice, in the best way possible. A lot has already been said about this game, so I'll just cut to the chase. It's phenomenal. Yeah, there are some elements that are similar to other Mad Head games, but overall they really did manage to do something "different".
Also, I can't say how incredibly pleased I am to have such a different #and culturally diverse# setting for once. I've been pretty disappointed in the lack of diversity and realism in a lot of HOPA games. I don't mean they need to be realistic per se in terms of the likelihood of things happening in real life - I mean, it IS a game - but it's nice to see people drawn like real people, and appropriately for their respective ages.
I have lost a serious amount of work time as a result of this game. I also bought it at the full #game club# CE price, out of pocket - I didn't have any credits available, and there wasn't much of a sale going on yesterday when I realized this was by Mad Head Games, which was enough to make me purchase it on the spot. I do want to note that there is not a single developer for whom I've loved EVERY single one of their games, and I am bothered by people who say that a game is great "as always" a certain developer. That immediately turns off everyone who has played a game by that developer that they didn't like! Just my two cents there. In the case of this dev, though, the only one I didn't like as an earlier and rougher game of theirs. Recent work has been fantastic in my opinion.
There are almost no errors in the game, but I would like to point one out that did bother me, even if it's minor - in case the devs read this, and to warn you other musical people out there about a mistake: a "clef" can be bass OR treble! In one of the hidden object scenes, you are supposed to find a "clef" when really they want you to find a "treble clef". But there is a bass clef as well as a treble clef in the scene, so if you pick the bass first, it is considered a misclick. I'm not trying to nitpick, but for musical people like myself, this is an error #albeit minor# in a very music-oriented game! I think this only really stands out because so much else about the game is practically perfect.
I recommend this game!

Well, I did actually read a lot of the other reviews for this, but it sounded like it might be worth it on sale (e.g. for three bucks as part of the recent bundle sale)...but, it really wasn't even worth that. True, it was short, but I was glad to see it finish and had been impatient for it to finish for awhile. I hate saying this because I do want to support new and lesser-known developers, but it's just the truth. I actually DID play the whole demo and thought it was worth getting on sale - but - for me - it just got really boring and repetative, and much less challenging, after the point where the demo ended.
The reason I didn't like it? Primarily, as others have warned, it is very very simplistic. I thought - hey, simple is nice and relaxing sometimes, right? And I LOVE pirate-themed stuff, so I can't go wrong, right? Wrong...sadly, wrong. There was some potential here, but it ended up falling really flat and was just uninspired. There was no depth to the gameplay, even though the story premise was pretty good. I'm all about a good story, but even with the good premise, it just wasn't enough to make the game good because it still wasn't a big part of the gameplay - specifically, the story was ok but not delved into with enough depth to be really good, even though it could have been.
Yeah, most of the graphics were a turn-off, too. Was this made in the '90's or something?? Anyway, sorry, I feel mean leaving this review, but I'm just being honest. This was a waste of money and I even considered not finishing it, but I've never not finished a game I purchased, at least eventually. I'll bet that a lot of us bought this game as an excuse to purchase the latest big hit from a different developer as part of the bundle sale...and I feel a bit taken advantage of since these bundle sales usually include games by the same developer (from what I've seen, that's actually always the case, but I don't know that for certain). That was not the case for this game, and I don't really agree with including non-related games in "bundle" sales when they usually are by the same developer. Or at least, make it clear in the description that it's a different developer!
I don't recommend this game.

I originally purchased the CE edition of this game, but I'll mention straightaway that I think the SE version is the better value. I rarely buy CE editions, but I did it for this one because I was impressed and really wanted to keep playing. It IS a really, really good game, so you can't lose with either the SE or CE, but I have to say that the CE "bling" didn't make up for the doubled price tag. For instance, the music wasn't downloadable - a real bummer because it was good. The Bonus gameplay was not up to par with the quality of the main game and did not seem to have as much thought put into it...especially the mini-games, which were truly excellent in the main game but not the bonus.
Also, regarding the fairytaleness/cutesiness of this game: I get bored easily with some of the fluffy fairytales with no "drive" to the story or depth to the characters #e.g., like some of Boomzap's previous games#, but I feel like this is one of the exceptions. Yes, it is absolutely a fairytale, but it is very much about the story and not too silly.
What made this a great game in my opinion:
1# The devs do a good job of drawing you into the story and making you care about the outcome; it feels more personal than the average HOPA, which is important to me.
2) Attention to DETAIL! For example, I tried using a screwdriver in instances where I was unsure if it might work, and instead of just saying "that didn't work", it would say things like "no, it will break if I try to pry it out with a screwdriver" or something else that indicates that they foresaw that you might try that #which for some reason makes me feel less stupid about trying it, haha#.
3) They don't hand-feed everything!!! Without making it overly difficult, the game also has nicely SUBTLE HINTS. For instance, when speaking with someone, it won't necessarily be obvious that you should "bring them something" like most HOPA games. I have to think about what might please them or influence them to help me. In some cases, you won't realize it until you find whatever it is - then it hits you - "Oh, I bet they would like this!" This makes the gameplay feel so much more interactive and realistic, like you actually came up with the idea yourself. :) It's a very nice touch that is much-appreciated by those of us who prefer less hand-holding #without wanting excessive frustration#.
You can tell that the DEVs put a lot more work and thought into this than some of the "bigger name" DEVs who produce more games but with less attention to detail, or - importantly - respect for your powers of deduction.
I recommend this game!

I trialed the CE of this and questioned whether I wanted it at all. I decided to give the SE a try when it came out since this did seem quite different than the norm, even if it was a bit cheesy-scary in the demo, visually drab, and its storyline for that first hour didn't "grab" me as much as I had hoped.
But, boy, am I glad I purchased this game anyway! It took a while to build up momentum and thicken the plot, but it ended up having one of the more thought-out and well-developed stories I've seen in these games. Also, this has by far the best voiceover I've heard in HOPA games. I won't give away which character it is, but you won't encounter her in the demo or even for awhile thereafter.
If you're looking for objects to constantly jump out at you, this isn't for you. Yeah, it has some legitimately scary and "jumpy" moments, but that's not the main thing that made it a fantastic game #although it did help a lot#. Nor is it horrifically disturbing in a way that is likely to bother even the more sensitive adult #e.g., those who have been victims of certain crimes#. As a person in that category, I can say I was not bothered by this game at all - and I HAVE been disturbed by one or two others that DID NOT have warnings on them#. The warning concerned me slightly, but it was really fine for the broad spectrum of adults, in actuality.
t does have its mistakes - perhaps more small glitches than many games #not inhibiting to overall gameplay though; mostly the occasional grammatical error or a zoom-in window that doesn't close after a task is completed#. Importantly, though, the "active areas" on the jump map WERE ACCURATE for once!! I used the active-area-location hints much more than usual because I felt this was actually moderately challenging in the adventure aspect, and I didn't have time to play it in one sitting #although I was late for work this morning because I couldn't put it down!#
After finishing this game, I couldn't decide what I wanted to play next. I am actually not a huge horror genre fan, but this had so much more depth to the story and was so much more emotionally gripping than most, I just couldn't bring myself to play something superficial afterwards. It is killing me that I won't be able to play the sequel until next fall! But DON'T let that stop you from playing this game now. It is clear that so much more effort went into this game's story development than most - but you will not realize that unless you play far beyond the demo, unfortunately. Give it a go...hopefully you'll enjoy it as much as I did if you take the same leap of faith!
I recommend this game!

This review is based on a bit beyond the demo cutoff. First off- I need to comment on the animal haters. I understand the general sentiment that some games have become way too cutesy (I agree to an extent), but come on...your helper in this game is not some domestic puppy or ridiculous talking cat that doesn't even look like a cat - it's a LYNX! A real wild animal! How cool is that? Most lynx (minus bobcats, so 3 out of 4# are endangered, including the North American lynx. Our lynx helper looks like a cross between the North American #or Canada# lynx and the Eurasian lynx. I wish the DEVs had taken this opportunity to provide natural history info on Lynx in the bonus section...they really are so mysterious and elusive that most people have never even heard of them, let alone know much about them!
OK, sorry, but my point was to choose your battles. I personally think it's great that this DEV decided to choose such a unique animal as a helper. Maybe it'll increase awareness for conservation? If nothing else, notice a deliberate choice to use a real wild animal, which is #in an oblique sense# a learning/exposure opportunity. Unless you really hate all animals - including endangered unique wildcats - then I don't really understand all the helper-hate I'm seeing for this particular game.
Right, so, stepping off of my "use of wild animal helpers to promote conservation awareness" soapbox now. :# The graphics in this game are really lovely. The movement in cutscenes is really interesting; they play with perspective and try to have the "camera" move while panning something. This provides a cinematic feel that is quite new and enjoyable. A lot the story is still unanswered as of yet, but I like that - keep me guessing for awhile!! I wish I could comment on the whole thing when I'm done, but my job will preclude me from finishing for awhile #thus making my review less likely to be seen#. Anyway, the VISUALS are great. The music is actually quite lovely, although I hope there is more variation than I've seen thus far. Some of the minigames have been pretty challenging - but in a good way! And hey, being able to choose the difficulty of a minigame is a GREAT idea. I know it's been done before, but I don't encounter it often.
Honestly, I have #almost# zero complaints thus far. I am bothered by the inability to customize the difficulty settings so that active areas on the map can be visible for any mode other than Casual. Heck, I don't need hint and skip at all if I have that "active area" map feature! Other than that, the gameplay has been smooth, appropriately paced, and with just enough questions to keep you going. Maybe this will be a five star and I just didn't know yet. The development and resolution of the storyline is what will elevate this game from a four to a five-star rating.
I recommend this game!

Some Elephant games have been excellent, well thought-out, and creative (e.g. the Surface series). This is NOT one of them. My biggest issue (and I'm not the only one who noted this# is the inaccurate age representation. The mother looked like a teenager #and had an adult daughter# but was married to a king who appeared to be at least 70 years old #e.g., like he could be her grandfather rather than husband#. Many of the voices did not seem to match the age, either, which detracted from their realism. Also, the men were in general represented as either old or fat, but all of the women were young and beautiful. Other games/developers are better at comparatively more accurate age and appearance representations, and it really does detract from the overall gameplay for me when such unpleasant stereoptypes are indulged in this manner. I don't expect completely realistic characters, but the characters in this game were simply NOT depicted remotely realistically. I actually found them a bit disturbing.
As for the rest: the HOS are good, but everything else is pretty poor. The graphics are disappointing, and the execution of the storyline is even worse. How they managed to mess up such a promising premise - the 7 deadly sins - I have NO idea. What makes me sad about seeing such high reviews for a shoddy game is that I don't know when to trust other highly-rated games I'm considering purchasing...AND then, the games that really DO deserve 5 stars get lost in the shuffle.
My first review #for the CE# was rejected, so I had to go for a milder critique this time. I was just following guidelines and being honest, but that doesn't always seem to be welcomed in reviews. NOTE that my review is based on both the Demo #SE# and the Beta test #CE). BOTTOM LINE: I just couldn't bring myself to drop even a free coupon on this game.
I don't recommend this game.
