Once you get to the town, the Victorian, decorative decadence, in dust and disrepair, really comes into its own. The graphics in a few of these places are so relaxing to look at, like still-life paintings. The barbers, the dressmakers, and the post office were particularly atmospheric with the 100-150 years old sewing machine, the cast iron, bot-bellied furnace and the green glass in an iron grill. I felt the indoor areas in general were done better than the outside. You can smell the smoke, the damp, the fires, in the musty old places…well I could!
*I enjoyed the HOPS and many of the puzzles and riddles (pretty straightforward). The HOPS are varied (not word-lists alone, but mainly that).
*Nice sound effects and ambient sounds throughout.
*Good hint and jump map.
*The vampire characters, with whom you have limited interaction, aren’t too badly done, and it really isn’t gory or scary at all. Just a pretty good atmosphere, for the most part. When I came to the last hour of gameplay, I was ready for it to end.
I read a negative review before I bought this game that stated that this game was an anomaly in the Myths of the World series. Reading that, I thought I might actually like this game then! Got it in the Daily Deal!
I recommend this game!

I enjoyed the wooded scenes A LOT. In the beginning I found it was wonderful: imaginative, exciting, and relaxing, and basically a nature-lover’s game, combined with folklore. It had a great storyline, funny, likeable characters and a great mix of ENJOYABLE puzzles. Some the HOPS are soothing and detailed to look at, and the music is soothing to the ears.
The graphics themselves are a mixture: the scenes are often cartoonish but when you zoom into mini-games and HOPS, they sometimes become clear and very detailed. I don’t like the cartoonish style.
The CE has cards you can collect, which has 30 descriptions of kind and not so kind creatures. In the beginning this is entertaining. Also there are glowing flowers to collect which glow and sparkle brightly.
Good hint, but the travel map is USELESS, because it takes you to a general area that covers several other possible areas.
About 1/2 the way through, I couldn’t wait to finish the game. I think I really only truly enjoyed the wooded scenes. I was so bored by the end:
***the characters seemed to lose their personalities and turn wooden,
***being unable to use a normal jump map, traipsing back and forth over the same route,
*** and looking at scenes I wasn't enjoying.
I took one look at the bonus game and decided not to play it yet.

Starts off as a 4* game but gradually declines.
There are some wonderful scenes in the first third, creating space and perspective. You really feel you are in places that have a near, middle and distance. I loved the ruggedness of the gardens in places like the woodland gardens, with scrubby shrubs and blossoms and pathways and tree-lined lily ponds. The colors used are natural looking.
Well-balanced sound effects are used and the music is gentle and relaxing. The HOPS are soothing to look at and are not just word lists. Puzzles are mainly very easy.
You get to play as both the hero and the heroine. Personally, I like this SO much better than the Dark Romance: Heart of the Beast.
HOWEVER, the characters lack depth, and the game itself got boring and tedious and there was no new stunning scenery. In the last third we are plunged into a miserable looking world…until the happy ending, that is.
I recommend this game!

Mainly an adventure with LOTS of mixed type puzzles of varying difficulty. Very few HOPS. The HOPS were not special to look at. Some of the background scenes and settings of the game are stunning to look at. The main negative thing I have to say, is that I found myself getting bored with the pace of the game in several stretches; it just lacked oomph and wasn't that relaxing either. The characters didn't have much depth. Hence, I just couldn't get into it properly. I didn’t enjoy this as much as Reflections of Life: Tree of Life.
Good hint and travel map, no journal.
I recommend this game!

Battling the torments of despair, and other such similar ailments and clinging to REMNANTS OF HOPE that must be resurrected, otherwise all is lost… A dark subject, broached in a very colorful way, (with a flying dog-helper!?). I found the dog jarring. I know they must’ve added it to lighten the atmosphere, but it just didn’t gel. The actual game isn’t dark or frightening.
I liked the graphics when it was a journey into one of the paintings, of which there are many. But the graphics are generally very cartoon-like, which is not my favorite type.
I thought it was quite a good game; a game to play if you need a break from other categories of game, to add variety. There are plenty of HOPS and puzzles.
I recommend this game!

(First review of this game on BFG: Dec 2012
Don't play this game if you want all the bling of a 2015 game.)
You play as a nobleman who wakes up confused in a tavern, having been dumped there by a cloaked stranger. There was just something about this game..it was relaxing, pleasant and enjoyable! It managed to get me hooked even though there are visibility issues with this game.
This is an older game that is HOPS and puzzles only, with narration of the story as you go along. The difficulty is with seeing many almost invisible and well blended objects. The game doesn't fill the whole screen. There are multiple maps. You complete each map, and then automatically progress to another one.
The very English sounding voice is relaxing, and the graphics, settings, music and background sounds are nice. In the HOPS, Items/areas that need more action to obtain get outlined in electric blue, when you hover over them. You do not see the whole inventory at once, and you usually have to use inventory items in a different HO scene. The puzzles are easy.
Extra fun :
-Earn hints include clicking on the “baddies” who pop up in random places, without shooting citizens. I think by the end I’d collected 43 hints. This added a lot of fun!
-Earn points and trophies
-If you want to, you can replay the HOS.
I recommend this game!

(First review for this game on BFG was: Jan 2015)
The HOPS, which are of the word-list type, are somewhat interactive. Not all the words are revealed at once, which I liked. In many places (but not all) the graphics are of my favorite sort, the artsy looking, crumbling, with lots of attention to shading, and subtle but varied coloring. Very little character interaction. Plenty of puzzles, which are mainly very easy. Filled my whole screen which was nice.
The page-layout is a little unusual: In the left lower corner is a purple button which locks the bar at the top of the screen into place. This contains the menu, hint button, and map. They are represented as symbols, but when you hover over them, the word appears. The hint button will tell you where to go and take you to an object in the environment, but it won’t show you which item to use from your inventory. The map IS a travel map, and tells you which areas action is pending. The inventory bar does not lock into place. The right lower corner has a “back” button, which you have to use sometimes to exit a scene/window.
The sound that accompanies your success at finding objects, whether in a HO scene or in the environment is repetitive and a 2-note combination. I wish they had made it a little more appealing, because hearing it again and again is a little too much. In the sound the “environment sounds” are drowned out with whatever they are combined with and so I couldn’t enjoy them without deafening myself.
The 4 star, rather than a 3 .5, is for the gorgeous HOPS. You can skip the HOPS by the way! There is also an alternative to completing the HOPS.
I recommend this game!

The main game is good and I enjoyed it! There are LOTS of yummy puzzles, I could do all of them, and didn’t have to skip any: sliding bars to allow one to get through to the other side (my favorite), getting colors grouped around circles, fitting shapes in an area and more. They weren’t super easy or super hard. Lots of HOPS too! I think the SE is a good choice. I did like the morphing objects in the CE, but the bonus game was nothing special.
I recommend this game!

I love the combination of ornate, detailed work, gone to rack and ruin, with contrasts of light and dark. It just looks so eerie. I liked the atmosphere! You can almost smell the damp rising up through the floor and seeping through walls. It’s beautifully artsy in some places.
The rats in the story are somehow a result of some experiment in the quest for immortality. Obviously something when crucially wrong and now the rats are huge! - I thought they added an element of humor.
Other stuff:
****LOTS of fun PUZZLES, that are not too easy and not too difficult. HOPS less, but fun. Only, not all objects are that clear. If you need clear, bright graphics, this is not for you.
*****Circular, blue, wisps of blue light, leads to an immediate recharge of the HINT button, but only in that one instance. Otherwise, the hint recharge is something like 1.5-2mins on EASY! So look out for them! Hint button shows you what needs attending to, and with which item.
*****Has a widescreen/full screen option. Not the best graphics in the world, as in they get a bit blurred on my computer in widescreen, and this game is best played in a darkened environment, because it doesn’t have much light in it, even with computer brightness set to max. Great sound effects.
*****MAP is a travel map, and will show your whereabouts and the location of active tasks.
There was so much I liked about this game, little things, like: when you use the travel map you get a pleasant whooshing sound, when you play a HOPS you get a harp strum per correct item, the voices of the ghosts you meet are very well done (there’s no lip sync if that’s important to you), and you get CHOICES, which affect the game.
Nice sound effects throughout. Good length story. An occasional difficulty putting the item in the scene straight away though.

The story line had a twist that took me by surprise! A thoroughly, absorbing game, with a good mix of puzzles, some HOGS, morphing objects and collectable petals.
However:
***The game had a loop playing in most of the game where every 30 seconds or so you hear crying. Gradually it became more and more annoying, and since I had to lower the environmental sounds a lot, I deducted a whole point.
***The Inspector from Haunted Hotel Phoenix, and previous Haunted Hotel games does not feature, which I found odd.
***There’s quite a lot of dried spattered blood all over the place.
***Also, I wish there had been more areas inside and/or outside to visit. It just didn't feel enough.
The bonus game was good, is a story in its own right, with a new character in the same Hotel. But as is usually the case, it was more of a winding-down exercise from the main game. The “secret room” part of the bonus features did not work for me- I know this because the hint kept pointing to something that was unavailable.
I recommend this game!
