Played the demo to see what this game is like and found that it's rather lacking in long-term gameplay. Nobody is expecting a game to last for many hours, when the whole point is that it's meant to be casual. However, this one falls down on how quick you can burn through it.
I'm currently at 75% complete and i've only played 45 minutes. I'm not averse to buying the full game but you gotta admit that it would be a waste of money for such a short play through. It's not really a game you'd come back to either.
It's not all bad, however, as it's true that I do have a few hard levels still to do, which would take me more time. Also there's the objective of completing a few more stamps and these hidden envelopes - that so far have just appeared after clicking buttons I'd be using anyway.
Additionally I wouldn't worry too much about the words not making sense that someone mentioned earlier. I'm just your average UK resident and I've known every one that I've come across thus far.
Conclussion: it's an ok, but very short game. If you like puzzles like this then it may be worth a pick up, but don't expect to be playing it too long, especially if you're good at these kind of games. I'm not, and i've run through it pretty rapidly.
I tried the demo on this game and pretty much decided within 10 minutes that I'd like to buy it. There's plenty of images you can break into jigsaw and both the pieces number and style can be customised, so the challenge is as easy or hard as you like.
The puzzle game engine seems to work well enough, and peices seem to fit together very well, and will actually look like they should go there when you hover them over the image. Some other jigsaw games they are using lower resolution sprites until they can paste the image in, once you release the piece, and it can make a lot of trial and error choices - totally not helpful.
A couple of things you prospective buyers should be aware of, however, and the reasons I didn't give it 5 stars.
Firstly there is a tab for custom images and a nice inviting load image button for you to click on and then select any picture you like of your own to create a jigsaw from. It clicks but absolutely nothing else happens, whereas it should be giving you a folder selection so you can select the image to use from your own stash. This is not good and shouldn't have gone out of testing like that. I wanted this game mainly for that option, so I'm pretty unhappy that it's not working, yet we're teased with it. If anyone does get it working, and it's just something to do with my setup, then please let me know.
Secondly, and probably just as useful to know, for you Mac players out there, just like me. The game is claiming intel only on its game page but you can ignore that little over-cautious comment. This is running fine on my M2 Mac mini pro, and that's a silicon machine, rather than Intel. So, if you have a newer Mac then you can still play this fine.
This game is well worth the buy if you want value for money - as in lots of jigsaws to actually do. There's a ton of lovely pictures here which you can make as easy or hard as you like to put together. Timer, shaped pieces, visibility of solution are all optional here so you can play it just the way you want.
Big + for all that. I like to do these sometimes at my own pace and with some relaxing background music, or sometimes with the timer running, and going to earn as many coins as possibly by playing quickly. This game caters for all of that.
I didn't see any kind of options for using your own photo's as a jigsaw anywhere, which was kind of disappointing. Additionally it runs a bit sluggish on my more than reasonable spec Mac, which I found concerning. The pieces drag around a bit jerky and the zoom in/out could have been smoother.
I also had to turn off the custom cursor as it was so tiny and moved so slow that I could do nothing with it.
However, minor gripes aside, it's a lovely, relaxing game to play when you want to chill out and it's very good value for the money, so well worth dropping a credit on or purchasing.
I'm going to disagree with a few of the opinions I've read so far on this game. I played for 40 minutes and that was enough to convince me to buy the game.
I've played a lot of hidden object games from this site and it's not my favourite type of game by any means. At least with this one you have some other puzzles thrown in, also not original but it improves the game. What I did like though was putting the game into casual mode (because that definitely describes me) and then opting to have no tutorial at all so I could play it cold and immerse myself in the story.
Dragons, magic, fairies and all that stuff just leaves me cold but from the first few scenes here where i'm interacting with objects on a H/O scene to fulfil objectives to continue the main story, rather than scenes being thrown in just for the sake of it, really made me like the game.
As it's based on a modern day visit to the old USSR rather than some boring, flogged to death, fantasy theme makes it much more interesting as I'm hoping going further in will lead to some espionage and other interesting topics.
Some people thought the graphics aren't up to much - not me. I'm fine with them.
Also someone mentioned they didn't like the game as they couldn't play it on their rubbish equipment. Sorry, but that's applicable for most games, i'm betting. This played just fine on my pretty basic Mac, and there's also a widescreen mode and full screen available so I have no idea why you moaned about that.
Music is nice in the background and pretty non-distracting, which is exactly what you want in a game like this.
So, big thumbs up from me. I'm looking forward to going back in now and working through the story. Well worth a purchase in my opinion. And I so, so hope that more developers will pick up on how boring all their H/O games are getting, with their boring samey, samey story-lines and maybe try something new.
I'd rather a game didn't have stupidly fancy graphics and effects which were just hiding a game that makes you almost feel like sleeping while trying to play it.
First off, for you 64 bit mac users, this will run on your machine. It seems to hang on exiting the game and some of the input seems a bit laggy sometimes, but it does work. You'll find it also takes a good few seconds to start up as well. I'm not sure if that's every time you start as i went through the demo time in one session.
Buying it is another question. If it was 64 bit properly then I'd probably go for it. I dislike time management games in general but this one would be an exception as I like the space/planet visiting theme. The story is UGH and the tutorial pop-ups just annoying but you can skip that and get on with the game, which basically works just like most of these types of games.
Collectors edition features are a joke. Rubbish wallpapers and the usual stuff like music tracks and some logs which, I assume, you need to unlock with game progress. I never got far enough to look into these.
BFG needs a wishlist system on their account so i could keep an eye on games like this and buy them when they have been updated for modern OS'.
Should you buy it? I would if you like the sci-fi theme and are still using a previous OS that runs the game probably better. Other than that, maybe wait and hope it gets resubmitted for 64 bit properly.
We've all seen this type of game before but I'm particularly fond of games themed around London and really liked Adventure Trip: London Collectors edition.
I played the demo of this and got basically the same thing right down to the interesting trivia that introduces each new scene when you first unlock it.
I've no idea how the story pans out as I bought the game after doing four scenes as I liked it. Graphics are nice enough and the objects aren't too tricky for the visually impaired - like me. Music can tire a bit after a while but the usual options are there to switch it off. One thing that did annoy me was switching to a custom cursor and finding the speed has slowed down on moving it. Not sure why they did that but it's a pretty minor complaint.
The levels are replayable and do the usual descriptions, shadows and other different ways for you to work out what you're looking for so they don't bore you by doing that. Indeed, you will have to replay the early ones at least a fair bit as you need to use your awarded stars to unlock further scenes. The number of objects also seems to increase a bit each time you repeat them as well. Plenty of game to keep you going here.
Not much else to complain about to be honest, and it's well worth buying in my opinion, because I know I'll play it a fair bit.
Oh, hot tip. Use todays discount code of TIME to get it a little cheaper as a member, or non-member. The code is meant for specific time management games but I tried it anyway and got a couple of pounds off. Looks like BFG forgot to limit the coupon - or just felt generous as it's Xmas. Just don't tell anyone I told you ;-)
Always find these games both fun and educational. I own all of them and will probably keep going as the series expands.
Just want to add that the game works find on my iMac 2015 model just so the Mac owners are not put off by a couple of the reviews that state it's not working end-of just because their machines won't play it.
I'm going to disagree with a few of the comments about this game that say it wasn't much of a challenge and a bit like Build-a-lot or Be Rich. Sure, the game works in a similar way but the background story and a couple of mini-games add to the fun quite a bit.
Additionally, some of the levels are pretty tough to break within the timer and you do sometimes need to replay them to make it work better if you're going to hit the time checkpoint for more experience points. I hasten to add here that you don't have to make the timer, it just helps if you do. If you prefer to play the game a bit slower then you won't be penalised for it - which is the correct thing to do for this game to prevent frustration for a lot of players.
With the added research tree and other elements, this game comes across just as good as, if not better, than a lot of other similar types of game and I've found myself putting a lot more time into it than I would have initially expected.
I know it's a bit of an old game now but it's still good fun and worth a buy - especially in a sale or as a monthly free game perhaps.
I bought this game a while back now but just noticed it had come up as a discounted deal for today so thought I'd put a word in for it. I'm not a huge fan of hidden object games but I did enjoy playing through this one and I don't finish many.
In fact I've lost count of the many I've tried as a demo and removed them after 10 minutes.
Well worth a play if you want some mild scares and an interesting rescue story. It's on a daily special today so snap it up while it's cheap as well.
