In this game from Anuman (who took over Microids) – Xiii is an enigma; with no memory of his former life he has to investigate who he is. As he is chased by various agents it becomes obvious that he had assassinated the President of the USA; but for whom & why?
The graphics are good & the artwork in the background scenes average; the human characters are drawn as cartoons reflecting the origins of this story as a graphic novel. The music isn’t overly prominent & the background noises suit the scenes; there is no voiceover but there is a lot of dialogue to explain your story as you play.
You start off with 3 hints & can collect others by finding stars; I found objects pretty easy to locate & at the end of each scene when you need to find or use an important object it was highlighted with a large green target. The mini games were also pretty easy although a bit clunky to use, for instance instead of rotating a puzzle piece with your mouse you have to click on an icon & then click on the item.
The story was enjoyable & had the game been more challenging I would have purchased. I am however recommending this game as it was fun & for those who want a non taxing game to pass away a few hours this is a good choice.

This Interactive Hidden Object from Vast Studios is the usual story of being stuck in a haunted town & trying to solve the mystery. The graphics were not as good as I would expect, the backgrounds are nicely drawn but the moving figures such as moths, birds etc. are pretty shaky, nor are the human characters as fluid as they could be.
The scenes filled my widescreen (it can be changed in the options menu) but the colouring is quite dark & brown, during the demo it was played at night, it’s raining heavily & given the theme I assume this is the reason but it has been done better.
The voiceovers are really excellent; the music & background sounds also suit the story. The H0 scenes (and there are many) have interactive items; always a plus & the mini-games are not too hard as long as you are patient.
On Easy mode there are sparkles & glints, the hint recharges at 40 seconds while on Hard mode there are no sparkles (even for H0 scenes) & an 80 second recharge. You are given a journal which does give some clues but there is no map for the various locations
I will recommend because you should at least download the demo & try for yourself.

The artwork is a little unusual & the graphics clear & well coloured, watch the BFG logo at the top of the game as Felix looks like a film noir detective, brilliant. There are voiceovers but you can skip the dialogue if you wish, they are not the best but better than a lot I have heard & some of it is quite witty & added to my enjoyment.
There are two modes; Casual with lots of sparkles & glints or Hard which has sparkles for hidden object scenes only. You have to earn hints by completing tasks or mini games & you get a diary which tells the story as you move along & gives a task list.
The mini games are a little more involved than the usual & it makes this an interesting game to play, there is a skip button. The H0 scenes usually have an interactive object, most of the objects are easy to find but some can be well blended & some objects are a little oddly named. I did find it difficult occasionally to pick up an item as I could not quite find the correct spot so took a few clicks to get it into inventory.
The game did have some translation errors & the ending was a let down but a good way to pass a few hours.

This is an excellent offering from Rainbow Games; the graphics are very sharp & clear with nice artwork. I enjoy history & this is a story about which I know very little so this fascinates me. There are a few anachronisms, for instance in a hidden object scene there were tomatoes but this did not spoil my enjoyment.
The music was very good & I also liked the background sounds. It is not widescreen even with the full screen option ticked but I really didn’t notice the black bars as I was engrossed in completing the tasks.
There is a very good mix of H0’s & mini games for which there is a skip button. In easy mode there are lots of sparkles & glints (even in the H0 scenes for the interactive items) with a 20 second hint recharge. In harder mode there are only sparkles for the H0 scenes & a 60 second hint. The hint button is very good, if you get stuck use it to find where to go next.
One negative for me was that the characters mouths moved but there was no voiceover & it was a little disconcerting; I would have preferred them to remain closed if only written dialogue is to be used

This is a game from Casual Arts which seems aimed at the younger player. The graphics are cartoonish & brightly coloured; a cheering YEAH is given if you find a special item. It filled my widescreen.
There is an easy mode with sparkles, no misclick penalty & a 25 second hint recharge whereas hard mode has no sparkles, the cursor stops for a couple of seconds if you over click & the hint recharge is 40 seconds.
You switch between hidden object scenes & very easy mini games; within the H0 scenes are candy canes, find them to earn points, you will be told when you have found all in a scene. After the first H0 scene another point earner comes into play; an alternated skull/pumpkin flashes in certain areas of the screen if your cursor passes over it. Click on the skull & you earn a trick, click on the pumpkin & you earn a treat.
I did not play long enough to know what the points, treats & tricks will give you. This is not a buy for me but seems a fun game to play with a child
I recommend this game!

This is not a simple hidden object game from Frogwares; the graphics, artwork & music mirror all the other Sherlock Holmes games from this developer. As ever the game is beautifully drawn & there are many types of puzzles to solve & it is extremely challenging to play.
There is no voiceover but quite a lot of dialogue which is clickable but still quite slow.
There are 3 modes, Casual, Detective & Adventure; I used Casual in the demo as I do not have the expertise to play in the harder modes. Once you get past the initial scenes in the game you will find 3 icons at the top left of the screen, a picture of Holmes which returns you to Baker Street to analyse, deduce, etc, a map to move to areas as they open up & a hat which is Scotland Yard where you look at witness testimonies, crime reports, etc.
You only get 3 hints per level & you cannot earn more so you may need to resort to a walkthrough more often than you would like.
You will have to find objects in a scene & identify them from a silhouette although if you hover your cursor over the object you will be given its name, e.g blood stain. Many of the items were extremely small & an inbuilt magnifying glass would have been really useful but unfortunately you have to strain your eyes instead. As there are so few hints it is made more difficult.
There are also puzzles through the game but there is a limited number that can be skipped, seven in casual mode & only three in the other modes of play. Some of the items that you find are also puzzles; you select an item & drag it over the puzzle icon (looks like a jigsaw piece). The puzzle icon will turn a golden colour when all the puzzles in a location have been solved.
This was altogether too confusing for me but perhaps more advanced gamers may find it easy to play.

This is a romance which isn’t my style; the music is pleasantly lilting but likely to send me to sleep as I was so bored. There are no voiceovers but there is a lot of dialogue which is clickable.
There is a normal mode with a 50 second hint recharge & an expert 90 seconds; however in both modes there is a banner at the top of the screen telling you what to do as soon as you have finished a task. In addition there is a diary with the story so far & clues.
Far too much hand-holding & flat unappealing graphics plus too slow to load between scenes.

This offering from Maria Glorum has a more than usual demonic theme with dark graphics to suit the storyline & a wonderful melodic piano score that is one of the best I have heard in a game. The cut scenes seem rather blurry but the artwork in the game itself is excellent & the atmosphere is very creepy & foreboding.
There are very few voiceovers & the dialogue was not clickable; however there is not a lot of it.
There are two modes of play; casual with a 30 second hint recharge & glints & sparkles, advanced with 60 second recharge & sparkles for the H0 scenes only. The misclick penalty only seemed to come into play during the advanced mode. It filled the widescreen on my monitor.
I found the cursor to be a little clunky in places & there is no map but as there do not seem to be a great many areas this is not a problem. I loved playing this game, good hidden object scenes & challenging puzzles.

This is a game from Playpond & it truly is beautiful; the graphics are clear & bright & the amount of detail in the artwork for each scene is wonderful. You can play in normal, widescreen or windowed mode & there are voiceovers but the dialogue is not skippable.
There 3 modes of play, the hint recharge is only 40 seconds in expert mode, you are given a journal with story & clues & a map with a great many areas. It is not interactive so put your sneakers on but walking through this game will be a pleasure to the eyes.
The hidden objects scenes were not too easy to play but if you are in easy or normal game mode you can get a silhouette of objects being searched for. The mini games were fun & the journal will give clues to solving some of them, they were not too difficult.
The journal keeps track of how long you have been playing which is great for those who like that sort of statistic.
I was not keen on the cursor as it is a hand with a pointing figure; in most games this signifies a place to go so at first I kept thinking I had found something whereas you have to find areas where the cursor changes to a closed fist. Apart from this oddity it was a good game to play with a well-known story.

Echoes of the Past is a trilogy of games from Orneon & this is the third; you do not need to have played the first two to enjoy this offering but they are well worth it & it’s always good to have some background.
There are a lot of puzzles to solve in this game, some of them are fiendishly difficult & many are original. The hidden object scenes are good too & have interactive items which is always fun. Some of them, rather than being word lists are where you are given items to ‘put back’ into the scene. You will need to go back & forth between scenes quite a lot & there is no map, you just get a journal which does not really provide many clues.
The graphics are excellent, as is the artwork & it filled my widescreen, however I was not keen on the music & the background sounds seemed to rely on a lot of creaking & footsteps.
There are two modes of play; regular with sparkles abounding & advanced with no sparkles. The hint recharge is a fast 15 seconds in both modes.
The voiceovers are mainly in the cut scenes & well suited to the game. A good lengthy game that is enjoyable to play.
