Before the dawn of computor games, a great way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon was either watching one of those great murder mystery films or reading a great detective novel. Today we can do both with this fantastic game that not only offers a fascinating story but has terrific game features that give you just as much satisfaction as if you were watching a great movie. Brink of Consiousness introduces us to the notorious serial killer called the Lonely Broken Heart Killer whose MO is to kidnap victims that all have one thing in common; a broken heart from love gone bad. After 30 days, he leaves their lifeless body on public display with their hearts removed and replaced with a yellow lotus flower. The 19th century British version of our CSI team takes on the case, Comamander Logan Green and his once upon a time mentor, Owen Wirght who has just discovered that his missing daughter Olivia is possibly the next victim. Now the two must race against the clock to rescue her from a gruesome death and catch this Psycho. The graphics are stunning and I especially loved that you can add a grainy look to scenes from your option menu. The voice-overs are excellent and very well acted. There is alot of dialogue to cover whch may put off some people, but I found them fascinating as you do get alot of clues and background information. My only concern was the lack of any journal or notebook, so be prepared to take down notes. There are alot of witnesses to interogate and alot of information to get. You have three play modes to choose from and to my slight dissapointment, only hardcore mode offers no sparkles whatsoever. I wish developers would adopt the customized option features which would allow us to alter settings according to our own preferences. Game mechanics run like a Large File game where you have characters moving around your screen. There is alot of seek and find of inventory objects and without an interactive map, there is alot of backtracking to do. My advice, take down notes in order to keep track of your tasks that need to be done. However, unlike adventure games, there are HO scenes that are interactive and junk-piled. I loved some of the interactions in them and thought they were great fun. Mini-games are not terribly hard to solve but I do compliment the developers on how well some were designed. I ran across some unique puzzles that were absolutely fun to play. Game mechanics were easy and if you do choose to play casual or easy mode, you do have a map that will outline your progress. I recommend this game to everyone, especially for those who have not yet ventured into the large file genre; this game is simple to play without the complexities involved in a Large File adventure game but it will offer you a feel for it. I loved going through the dialogues as they were very well acted. You do have the option to skip but my advice is to be patient and listen closely because there is alot of background information that is given. Alot of the characters are introduced through dialogues and in the beginning, I did lose track on who was who. There are no extra bells or whistles in this game like morphing objects or achievements; nevertheless the story, the graphics, the sounds and music along with the gameplay really makes up for this. Lonely Hearts Murders is definitely worth every penny as a CE and I do applaude these developers who have in the past brought us very good games. This time I do think that they have outdone themselves with the visuals and sound quality, and I look forward to spending the rest of Sunday solving this very interesting case.
A psycho is on the loose and this time his victim finds herself in a twisted version of Red Riding Hood who needs to rescue her fiance from this serial murderer. A twisted tale that is definitely for adults only, with graphics that are dark and at times a bit grainy. The overall atmosphere of depravity and the insanity of our villain is enhanced by very good voice-overs and music which were very well done. Game features two play modes to chooses from and having selected Expert, I was delighted that there were absolutely no sparkles which made playing a lot more challenging. The game offers your standard gameplay with crowded HO scenes that are not interactive, a journal along with a map that does allow you to jump to locations. I found that the story was what really made this game interesting. If like me, you enjoy a cat and mouse game with a psychotic villian with a very twisted sense of humour, you will enjoy the game mechanics that involve seek and find inventory items, several HO scenes that you do need to play more than once and a selection of very interesting mini-games that I really enjoyed. I wish the developers would have include some extras like collectables or achievements which would have really up-graded the gaming experience. However, that being said, the story alone is what prompted me to buy this and I enjoyed battling wits with this paticular bad guy who I am anxious to find out exactly what his story is.
In my original review I rated the CE version with only only three stars and if I could, I would add only half a star to my original 3 stars for the SE version. This sequel did disappoint me and I am in total agreement with fellow Fishie, Bobler from Denmark, who has surmised that ERS are now geared toward developing games that are suitable for beginners. This game does offer the standard ERS mechanics, three modes of play, a journal, no map and voice-overs. The music was on a constant loop and is very similar to music from the previous games. The storyline was weak and lacked any real depth in the characters and events. I found the graphics boring and I really am tired of the washed out pastel look which is so very dated. Game mechanics include interactive HO scenes and mini-games that were too simple and lacked any sort of imagination. However if you are a beginer to HOPAs and have played the previous Shadow of the Wolf's mystery, this game will appeal to you. I however would recommend that you either spend a credit or wait for a sale on this one. The game was too short and you really do not miss out on the bonus. As stated before, this bad wolf should have just remained in the doghouse for now.
I recommend this game!

Journey: The Heart of Gaia
After being kidnapped, Liz must free the Underworld from the tyranny of Scartaris Umbra.
I was away the day this game came out and let this game slip by me for some strange reason. I just recently came across it and having comleted it, I really must put my two cents in and say that this was by far one of my favortie games that I have played for some time. I loved the cartoon like graphics, the fantastic storyline that introduces us to a group of awesom characters with great voice-overs. It was a challenging and very entertaining game that took me over 6 hours to complete. I will now attempt to play it in hard-mode in order to get that badge for 'completing game under 6 hours'. There are no HO scenes but many puzzles to solve which I simply love. You have an interactive map that does allow you to jump and really some highly amusing mini-games. Some were easy and some did manage to make me sweat. There is nothing I did not love about this game and I really look forward to a sequel or another just like it. Kudos to BFG for this jewel and looking forward to many more like this.

One of the creepiest characters that I have come across is SG, the white-haired dwarf with the lunatic laugh. This time he is back and has brought along with him Zombies that have suddenly invaded a fishing town. We soon find out that the local undertaker has struck up a deal with SG which involves a cursed mirror resulting in the rise of the dead who are now on a rampage. As detective, your mission is to once again battle wits with the infamous SG and help the town return to normal. The Undertaker is a very entertaining HOPA that offers a chilling story, brilliant graphics and good voice-overs. Game features include three play modes, a journal but unfortunately no map. There are interactive HO scenes along with very well designed mini-games that I found both challenging and fun to solve. There are also collectables which involve finding 30 fish scales which is part of the destiny fish that looks suspiciously like our good ole pal BFG's Fish. I found the game enjoyable and I especially love the artwork. These developers always do bring us entertaining games but I do find that game mechanics are always the same and very familiar. Still, the story along with the graphics make it a collector's item. You also have mini-games as extras and did I mention the annoying little monkey who keeps popping up and sticking out his tongue at us. Friend or Foe? I have no idea but I will just have to buy the game to find out.
On her Birthday, Amy is approached by the spirit of a child who desperately needs her help. Amy must now venture through the gateway to another world that has been overtaken by the Dark Lord, who now threatens to rule all the worlds with his secret contraption that uses the souls of children belonging to the twelve zodiac signs. According to Prophecy, Amy must fufill her destiny as the one who must save the worlds from the Dark Lord. I love fantasy tales and as a HOPA, Zodiac Prophecies offers adventure and fantasy with a strong storyline, good voice-overs and two game modes to choose from. Unfortunately I found the graphics somewhat dissapointing; some scenes were grainy with the occasional blurriness, much more evident during the HO scenes. The artwork is stunning and with better resolution, the visuals would have really had a better impact on the game. There is a journal, a Task List and a map that will allow you to jump. I enjoyed the game mechanics which include HO scenes that were slightly interactive. However some items were barely visibal to the naked eye due to poor graphics. The mini-games were nicely put together but not very challenging to solve and your hint button does work well outside HO scene. This games could have used some polishing but still does run smoothly like a good adventure with HO scenes thrown in. I enjoyed the quirky characters that crossed my path and my trusted owl who does offer guidance when needed. Overall, I found the game experience entertaining and do look forward to helping Amy fulfill her destiny.
These developers have in the past delivered games with interesting storylines, some dealing with the occult while others dealt with the supernatural. As a sequel, Excorsist 3 does not quite hold a candle to their previous games when it comes to graphics although there is a slight improvement withthe overall look. If like me you do enjoy the occasional world of the dark and macarbre, this may just appeal to you. I did find the storyline somewhat weak without any real emphasis on the darkness of the overall subject matter. Be warned, there is way too much dialogue in the beginning which incidently is supported by good voice-overs and luckily they can be skipped. I personally did not mind the excessive jabber but I was once again slighly disappointed with the plot. Once again, Derek, the Exsorcist and savior of innocent souls, is called upon by an old friend who requires his immediate help with the dissapearance of his son Jacob. His Father has witnessed a dark and malignant force grab his son and now needs Derik's help in rescuing him. Pertaining to the story, the graphics are dark and gloomy. Unfotunately graphics are also at times bit grainy and blurry during the cut scenes. Game features three play modes to choose from. You are equipped with a journal and supposedly a map which I have yet to find during the trail play. Game mechanics is a HOPA with junk-piled HO scenes that are slightly interactive and where some items were barely visible to the naked eye. I enjoyed the adventure aspect of the game and I found some of the mini-games quite challenging. Overall the story is dark, the gameplay is midly interesting and there were a few times I actually needed a bit elbow-grease in solving a puzzle. Visually, graphics are not up to par but I will nevertheless recommend it if, like me, you are a junky for HOPA's and enjoy topics dealing with the dark forces of evil.
A town not found on a map is now stricken with a mysterious plague that has turned its ctizens into zombies. There are orphans that mysteriously appeared from nowhere and something sinister is definitely going on. Is it a military accident or something supernatural? That is what Clarissa, our government agent has been sent to find out. The story resembles a film I saw many moons ago, Village of the Damned which was based on a novel, Midwich Cuckoos. Definitely curious as to where it will lead. The openning scene was superbly done and what follows is a solid HOPA with outstanding almost life-like graphics, good voice-overs and sound-effects that enhances your gaming experience. Game features two game modes, a notebook and a interactive map where not only can use to jump locations, but it offers you progress on each location. Game mechanics offer interactive HO scenes that also include reverse HO where you need to place items in their proper place. There are 40 morphing objects in each scene and you can check your map for locations. Minigames are well placed but were almost too simple which I found a bit dissapointing. Overall the game gets full marks for visuals and sound quality as well as for the storyline. I would have liked a bit more challengeing gameplay. It just seems to me that developers are putting their all into visuals and designs but they lack imagination when it comes to puzzles and mini-games. Nevertheless a definite addition to my already over-crowded list of CE games. Must remember to clear out some from my game manager.
In the past these developers have brought us a selection of very good games; Nightfall Mysteries and the Shattered Mind series, all in their own right very entertaining games. Unfortunately Time Relic, a HOPA, disappoints me for several reasons. First I found the storyline very weak in comparison to previous games. The byline of the story is the past meeting up with the present causing great havoc in a town. According to the game description, you belong to a mysterious group of brethens called the Hands of Fate, whose objective is to keep the continuum of time running smoothly. The ancient Clock Tower has been destroyed under mysterious circumstances and you must collect all the missing gears in order to restore the time continueum before the town is completely gone. These facts are not made evident when you begin playingthe game which makes the story a bit disconnected which made it somewhat difficult to immerse myself into the plot and the characters. There are three play modes and with the exception of hardcore, you will have sparkles and guidance. The graphics are dark and clear but cut-scenes were a tad blurred and choppy. I did enjoy the music score and there are voice-overs. Game features a notebook with four sections; one section for clues, one that will hold the missing gears found throught the game, a section that holds the special crystals that will have recorded thoughts of characters that offer you background information. Finally a section where you need to place the missing pages of the Grimoire that recounts the story behing the Clock Tower and its secret. Gameplay is your basic HOPA with interactive HO scenes that are different from what we have seen and offers a unique perspective to the game. There are items that belong in the present and some that are from the past and can be revealed when locating the rune button. The adventure aspect of the game is pretty straightforward and you do have the blackbar tips that does lead you through the game. There are a variety of min-games that I did come across and all were a bit too simple which was rather disappointing. Overall I was not thrown over by the game; it lacked challenge and I felt that the story was not covered very well by the gameplay. As it has been offered as a Standard Edition, I personally will spend a free game credit on it. The fun factor was a bit low and I really did not find the game overtly challenging or entertaining when I compare it to the other games from these developers; it felt a bit incomplete. Nevertheless, a game for HOPA beginners and fans of the occult who may enjoy Time Relics for what it is; an easy and uncomplicated game with some interesting HO scenes and some basic puzzles.
As with the previous game, Dana Knightstone novels offer classic ghost stories with a touch of romance. This time Dana is out to help her dying cousin who also has the ability to see ghosts. He is being haunted by a beautiful violinist that apparently drowned under mysterious circumstances. Dana must find clues and locate the missing musical score in order to uncover the mystery behind our Musician's tragic death. The storyline is good and Boomzap have managed to once again design a game that offers stunning graphics, good voice-overs, a haunting musical score and somewhat interesting game mechanics. There are three playmodes to choose from; however I found that even in hardcore, there was too much guidance with the black bar tips. I liked the fact that there are no sparkles throughout the game but like I said, there was still to much hand-holding. There were different varieties of HO scenes and they all were interactive and fun to play. Some of the Puzzles and mini-games were unique but were not very challenging. You have a diary that also has the SG which follows your progress. There is no map and there are achievements to earn throughout the game. I enjoyed the overall look of this game; it looks very stylish and it did run very smoothly. There are six chapters and I managed to just complete the first chapter during the demo period. I personally enjoyed the game mechanics although I thought it could have been a bit more challenging. I cannot give this game a perfect score as I thought it was a little too easy to play but I did find the game rather entertaining. I am also a sucker for romance and do think that there might be more to the story and am eager to find out just who is behind the tragic death of our beautiful violinist.
