Yet another one out from the vault of long lost games at BFG. Cannot say much about Crystals of Time as I barely got through 20 minutes before I realised that the music in the background was making me feel really depressed and I just had to quit. What a downer! Our story has to do with an empty mansion, a missing father and his daughter ( A pair of 'Thieves' # and your role as Ashley who begins a quest to find him. There are crystals involved and I assume time travel but to tell you the truth, I just did not stick around to find out.
A game with limited features; hand drawn art-work, dark graphics, no voice-overs #Just that sporific music in the background#, two play modes to choose from and yet still you will get sparkles, a journal and a map that does allow you to jump from one location to another.
A classic HOPA, heavy emphasis on Hidden Objects whereby you have a standard list of objects to find. No interactions and some objects are rather difficult to spot due to poor graphics. Mostly a point and click game throughout each scene to find and pick up an object for your inventory and then there are the sporadic mini-games that are basic and nothing we havent seen.
I suppose if you are an avid fan of HOGs and really enjoy the classics, you can either spare a credit on this or not. I will take a pass on this, as my own vault is already crowded with similar antique games that are alot better than this one.
I personally am disappointed. I am a fan of the Dana Knightstone games but after having played the demo, I feel let down. Somewhat out dated graphics that were sharp but too catoony for me. Voice overs were over the top and lack of animations and special effects make the entire game feel old school.
There are three modes of gameplay yet you still have black bar hints which made the game less challenging. I ran across only one HO scene in chapter one which was a standard list of items, but all interactive. Mini-games were familiar and easy peasy, and the entire game felt a bit trite.
There are achievements that were basic and one which recieved if you played the entire game in less than three hours tells me that this game is way too short for a CE. There is only one set of collectables, giant playing cards in every scene, dont need to look very hard for them.
Not a bad game but definitely not worth the full CE price tag. I will either take advantage of the sale or just wait for the SE version. Actually, as the game did nt blow me away, I think I will just put this on the shelf for now.
This was supposed to be the happiest day of your life. But instead of walking down the aisle, you're in another dimension, battling a mad inventor to save your family!
An entertaining HOPA game provided you dont suffer from Ommetaphobia, if so, you may just want to pass this one up.
What was suppose to be the the happiest day of your life turns into a frantic mission to save not only your mother-in-law to be, but also find and save your missing Fiancé a mad inventor who is not from this dimension. OK, maybe the mother-in-law factor may not be such a problem for most of us (we can only wish), but no one gets away from keeping me from walking down the aisle.
The feeling of being constantly watched in this game is a slight over statement considering you need to collect 164 creepy eyes that are scattered about. Pesky little fellows, some easy to spot, some not so.
Graphics and visuals, what has now become a trademark for our developers, are sharp and very well done. I like the hand drawn art-work along with voice overs and musical track. All very familiar, nothing really new. Game menu offers three modes of difficulty and you still get black bar tips no matter what. Something that I think in futur should be dealt with for those who enjoy a more challenging experience.
A standard HOPA with game features that include a journal and a map that will allow for travel. You have yoru standard list of hidden object scenes with some interaction, but you also have the option to switch over to a game of Match 3.
Puzzles are easy to solve as are the mini-games. There really is no challeng except for locating a number of creepy eyes in every scene. What go annoying was with every eye, you get an achievement pop-up. On a positive not, you really do get to look at a scene very closely which will no doubt extend your playing time.
You have a set of achievements to un-lock and there is a cat which I really dont know why its there. I only got through the first chapter and called it a day for now.
The question now is will I buy? I just finished re-playing Nevertales which seriously sets the bar high for alot of games. This game just seems to be the same as many that I already have. I did give it four stars because I did like the story-line and the visuals. However, I may just wait for a sale on CE game to cross my path.
A game for beginners and for HOG fans. Not enough challenge but the list of achievements will give you something to aim for. I think the 'Eyes' may make it worth your time.
The Dark Parable series have always been amongst my favorites and now from their creators, we have Cursery: The Crooked Man. I remember the nursery rhyme from my childhood, it began with: there once was a crooked man who walked a crooked mile...... I always wondered what a crooked man would look like.
Our dark tale begins with the abduction of a young girl. It appears that for more than a century, girls of a certain age have been mysteriously vanishing, never to be seen again. Rumor has it that they were taken by the Crooked Man, who always travels with a strange little black cat at his side. According to the story, he takes the girls who resemble his dead fiancé which tells us he is a serial abductor. Now he’s kidnapped your very own sister and your mission begins by solving the riddles in the Cursery and finding out who’s really is the mastermind behind this whole evil plot.
This is a beautiful game with stunning graphics and artwork. Most of the scenes are dark but sharp with haunting music in the background and ambient sounds that bring the game alive. I know I was complaining about Fairy tales and cute creatures, but really there isn't anything cute about the creatures here.
Main Menu offers you three levels of difficulty to choose from. You have a map that will allow you to jump as well as indicate areas of interest. We actually have a very entertaining HOPA game with Fragmented Object scenes. Actually as I have only played the demo trial, I only came across one scene and it was fragmented. The game is riddle with puzzles and mini-games that not only are well executed, but some are a delight to play. I simply loved the three blind mice game that I cam across the first chapter.
As for extras, there are plenty of them to make this game well worth the extra pennies. You have morphing objects to locate, popup notes to collect and achievements to earn along the way. Also the bonus game offers you another story of Humpty Dumpty and who doesnt love Humpty?
Its dark, it’s a bit disturbing but also beautiful to look at. Although the black bar hints are a bit too much, I hardly noticed them. I think Cursery will be a hit and I expect other famous characters will be coming our way soon enough. KUDOS to the Tea drinking Group for this new series.
Who didn't love the game, Chinese Healer? The Myths of the World Series always manages to offer interesting storylines, beautiful graphics, well acted voice-overs and entertaining game mechanics. Stolen Spring adds a little more pleasantries such as an ermine companion who you will need and naturally extras as well.
Today our story is based on a Slavic theme and it is the battle of the Season. Winter has taken over and she is bent on freezing the world and getting rid of Spring Goddess Vesna all-together. Your mission as the Child of Spring is to naturally stop her and bring back Spring. First you need to find Baba Yaga who will help you.
I will be honest with you, as I am dearly pressed for time; I only played 30 minutes of the game and already have hit the buy button. I really will not be able to offer a very comprehensive review this time but will say that all I needed was peeking at the main menu to know that this game was a buy for me. You have three levels of difficulty setting along with a chance to customize it. Extras offer free games, a bonus game and a list of achievements which always makes a game interesting.
Game features include a diary and a list of objectives. You have a map that will offer a task list if you choose so. It will also allow you to travel. Then there is your pet Ermine which I named Erskin. You pet has very sharp teeth which will prove to be useful to you. You need to collect pet coins which are easy to spot throughout the game and you guessed it, you get to buy silly toys for your pet. If you click on the Ermine, you are transported to his room which by the way you can change various furniture and settings. You can also change his looks if you want with your coins.
OK, a bit of a family game here, an old folk tale with again a cute creature and some not so cute. Still I enjoy these games and I enjoy the storyline. Myths of the World brings us an entertaining HOPA game with interactive HO scenes that can be switched over to M3 Games instead for those who are weary of looking for items. I especially like that option and as I am a fan of M3 games, not a bad choice to make. Standard Adventure game play has you taking on tasks to help certain characters, looking for items of interest and solving the occasional mini-game which are not so difficult.
A Great Game that is entertaining for all and has all the bells and whistles that deserve a CE status.
Who are we kidding, this game is at least ten years old according to the date of the event, 2003, along with various clues like the old computer and floppy disks that you use. And I swear I remember some scenes very familiar to a large file Adventure game I once played such as the scene on the bridge in the first chapter, the painter and the wallet. Can it be that these developers took an old adventure game and re-designed it as a HOPA ? Or is this game something that was forgotten and just now recovered from the archive?
Our story is familiar, kidnapped fiance, a mysterious discovery from an old archeological dig and your mission to not only save Michael but to uncover a mystery that involves a pseudo planet called Niburu. (Wasn't that also a large file game?)
What you have here is a dated HOPA game with three modes of difficulty to choose from but you will still get sparkles, alot of hand holding and black bar tips. Graphics are mediocre and could have used a higher resolution for the HO scenes. There is only one voice-over and the rest is written dialogue. You have a map pictured by your journal on the bottom left screen but cannot access it so it pretty much is useless. Your hint system will tell you where to go and what to do.
Game is mostly adventure, picking up clues and using objects on items. There are characters you meet along the way that require you to do a task and there are ridiculously easy mini-games to solve. The only really interesting feature in this game are the HO scenes. They vary in style and are interactive. Graphics tend to get a bit blurry in these scenes making it difficult to spot some items. HO scenes involve a standard list of items to find or items to place back into the scene.
The game is not bad, mediocre and mostly adventure. Because of no map, you are on your own to go to places and achieve your tasks. There is alot of point and click involved and at first the game was mildly interesting but I got bored by the end of the demo.
I suppose a club award or free game pass can be used if you are up to feeling nostalgic. Adventure gamers will laugh at the simplicity of the game but HO fans may enjoy it.
Sorry but it is a pass for me, I have too many older games in my own archive that ı could go back to re-play. Lost Civilization is just a lost game that has been found.
Don't get me wrong, I am not complaining too much but I was getting a bit sick of the latest trend of Fairy tales and cute creatures. Finally, a story for grown ups that takes place in an abandoned medical research lab. A world famous scientist Dr. Ralph Goodwin has promised to unveil a miracle drug able to cure almost all types of diseases known to mankind. Suddenly right before his press conference a mysterious explosion destroys his research laboratory and it seems that the cure is lost forever. A young girl named Sara asks for your help. It appears that her brother is a patient of the good doctor and with her help, you begin your adventure and investigate the case searching through the lab, looking for clues and discovering that there is much more than meets the eye with Sara. By the way, there is also a very creepy looking humanoid that is trying to stop you.
So the graphics are a bit dated and art work is a bit drab but seriously, they did a fantastic job with the lip sync and voice-overs. An excellent HOPA game that will have hard core players pleased as punch as you will soon note that the use of some gray cells is required.
There are four modes of difficulty and I chose the hardest, Detective mode during the demo trial. Game features include a file that holds your journal, a summary, evidence, a task list and a map that really is quite useless, no travelling so prepared to run around. Sara acts as your hint and depending on what level you choose to play, you will have the option to skip HO scenes if you like.
An excellent HOPA game with crowded Hidden Object scenes that involved a list of items to find. No interaction, just straight forward seek and find. Brings back fond memories of past HO games we use to have.
Mini-games are fairy simple but some do require patience or a good memory which you will also need during your adventure. The challenge is that as you begin to roam through the building, you find your inventory is getting full and you have to figure out where to use what. I paticularily enjoyed figuring that out without any hand holding.
There are also collectables that are referred as achivements but since there is no extras mentionned in the main menu, I am curious as to why we need to collect them.
I liked the story, I liked the adventure and I really liked the fact that I had to use my memory and some logic. The game may be dated and definitely lacking in substance when compared to the newer CE games we have seen, but it's simplicity and lack of bells and whistles in this case make it an entertaining adventure game that I really enjoy, plus I really need to wean myself off the overly sacharrine themes and tap into my dark side a bit. I do miss a good scary tale with a goul chasing me thru a creepy building.
At first I was dismayed when I saw the intro, if I recall we already had a storyline that involved a sinister frog. However, once I began the adventure, to my surprize I found myself captivated with the challenges that began and by the time the demo trial was over, I was hooked.
Our tale begins with a detective from Scottland yard who comes across a mysterious fog. Once he drives through, he discovers another world filled with mysterious creatures and a story involving an evil wizard called Cornelius who has excaped imprisonment and now threatens both worlds. As the detective, you must stop the wizard before he carries out his evil plan.
Although the graphics and artwork were cartoonlike, I love the vibrant colors and sharpness of visuals. Animation scenes were blurry but it really didnt bother me. Sound and voice-overs are well done as is the musical score in the background.
You have three modes of difficulty along with a travel map that you can turn on or off the progress indicators. I chose advance mode which to my surprize had no sparkles whatsoever and no black bar tips to aid you. Hard core mode disables all skips and hint use.
Game features include a journal, map and you have two companions that you pick up along the way; a raccoon that will retrieve out of reach objects and a small dragon that will breath fire.
A very well put together HOPA game with interactive standard HO scenes that are crowded and objects are well camoflauged. Adventure gameplay involves alot of back-tracking, picking up objects and solving puzzles. Without the black bar tips, you need a good memory and at times an opportunity to use the grey cells. Mini-games were exellent, some were a bit tricky and some required some patience. I expecially loved the water pipe puzzle that took some time to solve.
There are extras such as collecting hidden symbols which really involves finding tiny gold bells hidden throughout the game and each mysterious creature you come across is recorded in a book. There are also achievmenets to earn as well.
Although at first I found the game a bit childish, fantsy and fairy tale mixed together, I have to admit that the adventure gameplay along with the mini-games made the game much more entertaining and interesting. I will definitely be taking advantage of the sale today and add this one to my collection.
A great game for the family and I think for us grown-ups as well.
To save your father from a hideous monster, you've decided to sacrifice your own freedom. Now you must journey through a strange and magical land before time runs out!
Adapted from the Fairy Tale of Beauty and the Beast, our story begins with a devoted Father who falls upon a castle where he finds a golden nightingale. He decides to take it as a gift to his daughter only to discover that it belongs to a very dark Beast. In exchange for his crime, the Father must either have his daughter submit to a life of servitude, or face the fate himself or certain death. Naturally, our heroine decides to take her Father's place and she has till Midnight to reach the castle. That is where the tricky part begins along with our adventure.
It has been a while since we have had a game from everyone's favorite game developers. Getting worried there for a while but here they are with the same style of graphics and beautiful artwork, voice-overs, quirky characters all put together in an entertaining HOPA game that can be enjoyed by all meembers of the family.
SOme of you may find this a bit too sacharrine for your taste, a bit childish but still gameplay is interesting. Yopu have three modes of difficulty that can also be customized. You have your map that allows you to travel, a journal and a golden nightingale that has magical powers to make things grow. Thee is also a clock that appears at the beginning of the game and it times you, telling you that you have till midnight. I shudder to think what will happen if I dont reach the castle by then, do I have to start from the beginning?
Gameplay is your standard HOPA with variations of Hidden Object scenes. You have a list of items to find that also involves interaction or collecting 12 of the same objects, There may be more but I only came across 3 HO scenes. Yuu also have the option to switch to a M3 style game that is very different from a mere swap. I liked playing it and thought it was clever to add that.
Adventure gameplay has you going back and forth alot, thank goodness for the map. As for the mingame, I thought they were brilliant, well executed and fun to play. Also there a extras like collecting exotic birds along the way and a list of achievments.
As I said, a lot of back and forth, picking up objects to use and clues along the way. The clock on the upper right hand corner does concern me and has peaked my curiosity. Alot of quirky characters and then there is the evil sorceress that is trying to deter you from reaching the castle.
Somewhat a childish theme but gameplay is entertaining. Is it worth the extra pennies? Well it seems now that most SE games are really not worth spending money or using a free club award and that most games worth playing are now tagged as CE. I liked the game but right now my budget is tight and I really am not so keen with fairy tales at this time. I prefer a more adult theme to my games.
Five old friends and three of them dead, encased in scuptor's plastic. After having recieved a letter, your mission takes you to a Greek Island where once upon a time lived a famous scupter and his wife, both tragically dead due to a unfortunate accident involving a machine that turns things into sculpters, Right! As you discover some clues, another tragic death occurs and obviously someone out of the five people is behind these deathsand it looks like the list of suspects is dwindleling..
What we have here is a Greek Tragedy brought to us as a standard HOPA game with the appropriate extras. After having played the demo, I will either wait for the SE version to come out or take advantage of a good sale.
Today's game offers good graphics, sharp and bright colorful art work. There are voice-overs and the music was actually quite good. Game features a journal, a task or list of objectives, a map that will allow you to travel and also indicates areas of interest, twenty morphing objects to locate and sixty stone coins to collect throughout the game. There are also achievements to earn as well.
Game mechanics include adventure gamplay, standard HO scenes with some interation involved and very easy and quick mini-games. The HO scenes are repetative but items are well hidden and sometimes difficult to spot. So why am I not jumping up and down? Because there is a real out-dated look and feel about the game and a lack of any sort of challenge. Also there is something too familiar about the entire game experience, either I played this game before or played so many like it back when HOPA games were all the rage.
Dark Canvas is not a bad game, but not really a great game. As I said, I personally will either take advantage of a sale on CE games or just wait. In a fairness, I am a bit curious to see just who is behind the deaths but as I am comparing notes with the outstanding CE game Nevertales, I cant honestly give this game five gold stars, three and a half would be my grade.
