Since I enjoy horror games and was attracted to the warning on the face page, I decided to try the game and liked it enough to purchase it. However, I don't scare easily and the cheap scares here were just that. There's nothing truly frightening in here if that's what you're looking for, but it was challenging enough to find the clues and figure out where to locate the objects that you need. The graphics are subpar and places where you are so sure you'll find something you need are just red herrings to throw you off. Consult your task list often because you can get progressive clues to help you along the way. There are multiple endings to the game but I've only played it through once since it took me so long to get through it that I'm not ready to play it again, but it's something different from the cookie cutter games we've gotten over the last few years. There's no music and very little sound effects so you'll be utterly alone until you meet the witch. Do demo it to make sure it plays on your computer since it was made before Windows 10.
I recommend this game!

I would have given 5 stars except for the “wandering map” which looks like it would be helpful until you realize you get this same screen that wastes minutes every single time you try to move somewhere else quickly. Waiting for the incessant footsteps to stop breaks your concentration as you try to decide where to go next and what you want to do. This is not the way to prolong gameplay so I removed one star for this. Otherwise it’s a solid 4. Walkthroughs are available online. It's a very hard game that's better suited for seasoned adventurers. Loved the creepy storyline and the very beautifully detailed scenes with "thing" reminiscent of the Addams Family. The soundtrack is unique and banging. This is a thinker’s game not to be played in one day. Do demo it to make sure it works on your computer since this was made before Windows 10.

This game will appeal most to those who grew up in the 80s playing adventure games and who revel in the fun of finding things as you wander around. There's no map and the area is large but as you roam about, you'll start to recognize the areas where you've been and where you need to go. Each room looks distinctly different so it isn't as hard as you might think, and it's just as if you were actually exploring an abandoned building and would need to backtrack when needed. This looks to be a collector's edition but sold for a standard edition price. You get all the extras that a CE offers (except for bonus play), but it's well worth getting if this kind of old style game appeals to you. The colors are drab but it's supposed to be since you're in a dilapidated hospital. Just go with it and see how you like it after playing the demo. This also lets you know if it's compatible with your computer since it was made before Windows 10.
I recommend this game!

This is an old game with old style graphics that will put off many, but it's challenging enough for old time gamers like myself who relish the adventuring aspect of game playing. There's literally no movement other than for the passing clouds overhead so the feeling of utter loneliness is duly felt here since you won't meet anyone other than the four afflicted girls and the one suspected of causing all their woes. When you finally do confront the suspect, it is anticlimactic and hurried and the game suddenly ends so that was a bit disappointing, but I ended up enjoying this game more than I had expected. The map fills in as you explore the town but it's not labeled, so I copied the completed map from the walkthrough first and penciled in the details myself as I came to the various locations. Not all places are included on the map, like buildings that show only HOS but you never need to enter them later, so use a pencil so that you can erase the wrong notations that you're sure to make like I did. The journal is very helpful so consult it often because it contains your task list and progressive clues that you can choose to read or ignore depending on your needs. I appreciated this aspect because the hint button only shows what directions you can move to, so the journal really provides the help that you will need to navigate the town. This is a really different kind of game since it doesn't follow the current cookie cutter pattern that we're used to seeing now, so there may still be an audience that can appreciate it like I did. The story held my interest throughout and the mysterious atmosphere kept me wanting to play more. Do demo it first as it's an acquired taste.
I recommend this game!

I was really enjoying this game all the way through and was surprised when it seemed to suddenly stop. The demo hooked me and I was completely immersed in the beautiful scenery and mysterious story. Lots of going to and fro to different areas and the transportive map can look intimidating when loads of active areas appear at the same time, so I found myself depending more on the hint button in the later half of the game when getting confused about where to go next. There are a lot of rooms in the house and a couple areas outside that have lots to do so it's the usual back and forth with acquiring the tools needed to progress. It seemed short but had a healthy dose of adventuring and I really liked the artwork that reminded me of Victorian style. It was really pleasing to explore the different rooms and see the story unfold.
I recommend this game!

Just finished playing this very old game but I liked it very much. Yes, the graphics are dated but the artwork is beautiful and what saves the game is the mysterious storyline which is very well done. There is no animation of characters yet locations get skewed when you solve puzzles later in the game that reveal information about the imprisoned people. The map is not transportive but does reveal active areas. Music is appropriately moody. The only thing annoying was the frequent elevator hopping from floor to floor to get to the farthest areas and then having to go back again. This will appeal more to those who like the adventuring aspect of gaming. I liked it.
I recommend this game!

Whoo boy!!! Where do I begin? As much as I hate to give a bad review, I can't help but say that this one is a stinker. I knew 30 minutes into the 90 minute demo that I wasn't going to buy it but I wanted to finish the demo to give a fair review of what I played. I ended up getting to play only 8 minutes more before the demo just quit. I didn't get the familiar "thank you for playing the demo" message that we normally do, but a cut to the main menu showing the "deluxe" version. Is the demo I played a portion of the deluxe edition, or was it telling me that there's another version of this game available? Who the heck knows? They already lost me because of the clunky game mechanics, poor voice acting, illogical storyline, and other things that others have already mentioned in their negative reviews. The instructions were poorly written and the game just wasn't fun to play. The absolute worst part was the hidden object scene where you're trying to find scraps of what looks like metal pieces (everything in the scene looked like pieces of something), but when you clicked on the wrong piece, the scene grew progressively DARKER. How are you supposed to find something when you can't see it? Oh, you can use the "handy" flashlight and move it around and look in the small circle of light for these already hard-to-spot items but that just drags out the misery that you're already experiencing. How did the developer think that players were going to enjoy this game when the mechanics are so poor? I couldn't figure out how to defeat the oncoming ghosts without using the skip button and I never knew why that heart was beating in the lower left corner. On top of that, the deluxe trailer at the "end" of the demo mentions "live" exorcisms. No thanks. I like spooky themed games but not into THAT kind of thing in my game playing. Try the demo if you're that interested, but I don't think I'm wrong in saying that there will be a very small audience for this one. Best to skip it altogether.
I don't recommend this game.

I'd bought this game after playing the demo a long time ago but never got around to play the rest of it until now. What a fun trip that was! I know the game is considered "old" by today's standards but that suits me just fine, as it has all the things I look for in a fun game. It has an engaging story (based on a real book), absolutely gorgeous colorful graphics, moody ambient sounds, atmospheric music, and something I've never yet seen before. Within the journal there's a progressive hint system that you can choose to access as the need arises, or you can continue using the regular hint that will offer directional assistance as well as pointing you to the area needing attention within a scene. Both are always available to you and being as there's no map, they are valuable in providing where to go. As someone who enjoys the wandering around myself, this game provides the adventure aspect I crave when playing games such as this one. Gameplay is logical and collected items make sense as to where you need to use them. Although the HO scenes are repeated, you always get new items to find so it never becomes boring. I enjoyed this game so much, I am sure I'll be replaying it soon.
I recommend this game!

Although this game is obviously geared towards children, the child in me still enjoyed it very much. The hidden objects were frequently very tricky for me to find amidst the bright, vivid colors and many of them are right there hidden in plain sight. Puzzles and minigames are very easy. Bonus points are awarded for finding candy canes in each scene as well as the flashing areas where you try to quickly choose between a pumpkin or skull for added points. There's enough here for someone who doesn't expect much in the way of a long game or challenges of any kind, but it makes for a fun couple of hours at Halloween time for the young or young at heart.
I recommend this game!

What a fun game! I've never heard of this series before and I don't care if it's an older game....it's different from all the copy cats out there and that's what I like about it. Some find it very easy. And some of it is but other parts are very challenging. Some objects are hidden in plain view while others are hiding behind other things and you need to perform a series of moves to get to those other items. There are areas within areas, and each scene is beautifully drawn with wonderful appropriate music throughout. Perhaps the greatest challenge, and one that everyone should know about, is that there are no skips for the minigames. Although they are doable, some may find it too challenging if your memory isn't so good. Many of the minigames are memory challenges and some require quick movements because they are timed or change too quickly for some tastes. I'm lousy at rotation puzzles and the one had me stuck for a good long time but I eventually got it. A great feeling of accomplishment followed and this is one game that will definitely make you feel good when you overcome these challenges. This is a good long game providing several hours of challenging fun and is well worth checking out.
I recommend this game!
