I loved this game from the moment I started playing the demo because I knew I was in for a good time. It's hilarious and I chuckled a lot during the conversations with some of the characters. My absolute favorite character is the dinosaur, who is sweet and childlike and who completely charmed me with the way he talks and acts. My other fave is the uber-MUSHROOM who is not afraid to voice his strong opinions. This is not a game for the real serious person who plays games to strain his brain in order to challenge those grey areas. Mushroom Age is for the casual gamer like myself who plays for fun and relaxation and for something a little different from the darker themed games that I usually play. It's a great break for those in between times when I want to zone out for a few hours and travel through different time periods.
It would have been a five star game all the way except for the fact that you can't skip the quizzes or the minigames, which loses a star because of that, and you cannot progress in the game without doing all of them. If it wasn't for the walkthrough and the forums, I would have never gotten through it. The game might look simple, and in some places it is, but it's deceptive because these minigames are tricky and require memory and spatial skills that might tax some people who lack in these areas, so prepare to spend a LOT of time redoing certain games repeatedly until you get it right. Especially later in the game when you have to play pinball. It's not what you think and you have to play several times to get through it. I spent many frustrating hours on this one area alone but there was a feeling of accomplishment when I finally got it. Another one with mirrors appears later which is another brain twister but I found the forums to be helpful with that one. Not everyone is good at these kinds of minigames and should be allowed to skip them for any reason. I like to try for a while to challenge myself but I'm humble enough to know when it's time to throw in the towel and give up. I just want a way to do it easily but this game doesn't give you that option.
Another negative to be aware of besides the no skip option is the fact that the game is done in chapters that cannot be saved until you're at the end of each chapter! So if you quit or your computer freezes and you have to open it again, you'll have to redo all the tasks and minigames in that chapter even if you've already done them! This is absurd gameplaying by the developers because you're essentially being punished for quitting the game before completing the chapter that you're in. If we've completed everything, either the game should have an autosave feature or they should put in a way for us to do a manual save ourselves. I was furious when my computer froze right after I'd mastered the pinball games the first time I played, but I've had no problems since I played through Mushroom Age again several times. Although the chapters are short, there are many of them so the game is very long and you'll definitely get your money's worth. I bought this recently on the COW sale for $2.99 but wouldn't have paid full price for it just because of the no skip option.
Other than for the above mentioned negatives, the rest of the game is pure fun all the way. The artwork is simplistic looking compared to more serious, newer games but it works for this type of storyline. And the scenery in the Mushroom Age time period itself is the absolute best in the entire game with its beautiful multi-colored scenes. The graphics that most impressed me was the purplish wormhole you travelled through to get to each age. It's very fast moving so some might get dizzy while looking at it. The characters are quirky and cute in their own way and I love how they just drop off the screen when they faint or bounce out of the scene when they walk. The only characters I didn't like were the engaged couple. In my opinion, the voice acting was wooden and their love story not convincing, but the voices of all the other characters were top notch and fit their personalities. Check out the preview to see if it interests you. And if so, see if the demo tickles your funny bone like it did mine. I think most will like Mushroom Age. And that's no baloney! A-A-A
I recommend this game!

This is an objective review of my completely subjective experience with Cardboard Castle. I truly have a soft spot for this charming little game as it is so deliciously simplistic looking yet deceptively challenging at the same time. It's labelled in its description as an arcade game yet it's categorized in the adventure genre but it's really more of a puzzle/logic game played against the backdrop of the knight's adventures. Many people wrote this game off as a child's game judging by the way it looks but I assure you that it is not. Although I don't consider myself an expert gamer by my own definition, I'm very experienced in the adventure game genre and go back to its inception when there were no graphics and games were entirely text based. So with that being said, I came upon this game because the title aroused my curiosity and I just had to try it. I have fond memories of my childhood and am very nostalgic when I come across anything that reminds me of it. This game has very cute visuals in the way that the characters and props are drawn and colored, and the many animations and sounds throughout are very creatively rendered.
Obviously, you can't take this game too seriously. I mean just read the description of its "unspeakable dangers, hideous monsters and horrendous hellfire". It's nothing but cardboard cutouts drawn with crayons so just how seriously should one take this game anyway? It's totally tongue-in-cheek charm all the way and I just climbed on board and rode away with it. What kicks the game up a notch for me is not what you're supposed to do within each scene but more HOW to do it. The gameplay is linear but you're only allowed to see a portion of the entire scene at a time because you have to scroll your mouse from side to side to "see" the entire picture. I think this is a genius technique on the dev's part because you tend to forget what you've just seen and the scrolling back and forth gets you thinking about where you're supposed to use any particular item you have in view before you. And some of the items to pick up are ridiculously oversized. Why should there be a huge pair of scissors or a glass of water hanging in the sky instead of on the ground like in other games? Why indeed? That's what's brilliant about this game. You're thrown off by what you're seeing because sometimes it visually doesn't make sense. And because it's a fairy tale, the logic involved in completing the tasks may not always make sense either. Yes, the earlier levels are easy but it gets progessively harder quite quickly and I'm stumped right now because I haven't figured out the sequence correctly yet after having tried many different ways many times now.
Luckily, you can replay each level until you get it so I'm still working on it and enjoy the fact that it's got me so stymied. The hint system is helpful to a point. You can collect coins for them but sometimes it'll give hints to tasks you've already accomplished so it's wasted. There's a walkthrough available elsewhere that's somewhat helpful but it's all in pictures and specific steps that are normally written out in other walkthroughs would be very helpful here but are absent. So it's more of just depending on your own smarts to figure it out. This is not a bad thing as too many of us (me included) have become too spoiled with the available help given within games nowadays so having to rely on your intuition is actually a good thing. This game forces you to think outside the box. The scenes here aren't cluttered so the sequence of tasks can eventually be discovered but it can just take a little time. The last level is timed so that's an added challenge but I'm nowhere near getting to that part yet. I'm just having fun where I am right now and come to this game when I want to take a break from playing the more complicated games that I normally play. I know it's not a game that most people will like but I thought it was very brave of the devs to attempt it with its distinctive style. And it's very unique in that there's no other game like it anywhere that I've seen. Expert puzzlers may not find replayability in Cardboard Castle so it's a good game to put aside for a long time after mastering it before you play it through again, but please don't write this one off too quickly before trying the demo hour. I was surprised when the time ran out but knew I had to buy it. In all honesty, I don't think it's worth the full price (I always wait for sales) so I bought it on a half off sale and think it was a good deal.
I recommend this game!

I couldn't believe how crisp, clear, and absolutely gorgeous this game's graphics were when I first demo'd it. I just finished playing and boy, was it an experience! There's so much to see and do that I frequently got lost wandering around and through the rooms but, between the walkthrough and the not-always-helpful map, I managed to complete it. I only resorted to the walkthrough late in chapter 7 when the map didn't point out any more objectives or places of interest, and the hint button just kept giving me the "there isn't anything to do here" kind of message that leaves you hanging. The confusion in this game for me was the fact that every room and hallway was so intricately detailed and colorful that I'd forget where I first saw something and the images just sort of melted together in my head. When objectives or places of interest were clearly marked on the map, then navigating there was very easy although the map is not transportive.
Hidden objects scenes were in the form of fragmented objects, which are always a nice diversion from the usual word lists that we're so used to seeing. At least the pieces were actually from the objects themselves and not in silhouette form, which I don't like as much. You have to revisit some of the same HO scenes again but you always get new objects to put together. Sparkles indicate both puzzles and HO scenes. The puzzles are varied and fun and all can be skipped. I always play in the easiest mode because I want to move along in the story and I like having the extra help available when I need it. The only glaring blemish on this game is the ridiculously LONG hint button which takes FIVE full minutes to refill! Why should it take so long for the easiest play mode, devs? Oh, there are 20 morphing (called 'cursed') objects to find also. Finding them reduces the refill time for the hint button so I guess that's why they start with five minutes first. It gives you the incentive to actively look for them, although it does slow down the gameplay because they are frequently difficult to see against all the detailed engravings within each scene.
There are separate objects to find scattered throughut that when you have collected enough of one kind, a parable opens for you to read. These parables explain the story of how the Snow Queen came to be that way and although they could be more detailed, they do tell the story in fairy tale terms.
All the characters were realistically drawn and the animations and voiceovers were outstanding. The music was so unobtrusive that I can't remember it, but the sound effects of the wind and blowing snow were abundant throughout all the outdoor scenes. To me, this game might be a little too difficult for the HO/adventure gamers that are new to this genre, but that's what the hour trial is for so beginners shouldn't take my comment too seriously and just try it out for yourselves. Overall, this game is an exceptional offering from Blue Tea and I look forward to seeing many more games from them in years to come. I just wish we could have helped the poor frog!
I recommend this game!

This was a real fun game. Some people didn't like the same color background in each section (red for the first, blue for second, green for the third and purple for the forth#, but I thought it was a unique touch and added to the contamination feeling that permeated throughout the game. The HO scenes were not in one color and were fewer than in other games #thank goodness for that) and there were plenty of other objects lying under and behind other things outside of HO scenes to find, so that satisfies gamers like me who love the adventuring aspect. And you didn't have to backtrack too far to use items you found earlier, as each scene looked different from all others so remembering where to go to use them was easy, at least for me. This was a perfect balance of object finding, adventuring, and hidden object scenes combined with a very moody soundtrack that had no melody but was very atmospheric. For a decimated town that's contaminated by chemicals and populated with zombies wandering about randomly, it still looked quite beautiful with its vivid use of colors and creative animations. Besides the rich colors, I also liked having to find health packs to keep your energy up. You had to find these so that you had the strength to move heavier objects. I thought this was very innovative because you couldn't progress further in the game until you found the health packs, but you always knew when you needed them because you were told how much strength was needed to do a certain task.
The excellent hint system was better than usual because it worked alongside the task list, which came with its own integrated strategy guide that opened into drop down menus if you wanted to know exactly how to do each task! For the expert gamer, this is entirely too easy as this game doesn't offer different modes of play, so sparkles will appear for both HO scenes as well as for other places of interest to explore. But for the beginner and intermediates like me who always play for relaxation, this game offers the perfect built-in help system without having to leave the game to consult the forums or a walkthrough. Minigames are fun and sometimes a little difficult or requiring a lot of patience, but the skip button is always available and fills quickly.
The only negative I could find was in the poor rendering of the principal characters. They looked like cloth dolls and even the zombies were drawn better. The one glitch I encountered was where you had to look for the girl through the telescope. After I found her and the zombie chased after her, the screen went completely black and my cursor froze. Hitting the traditional escape key or the ctrl-alt-delete did nothing and I had to do a cold boot which I hate doing, but at least the game opened properly and I didn't lose any of my work up to that time. All other aspects of the game worked perfectly but I have an older computer. Check the forums before you buy because some reviewers said that some newer drivers aren't compatible with this game and these reviews were written within the last year. However, the problem could be within the game itself so like always, try before you buy!
The one thing in the game that I found to be unintentionally funny was how you could repeatedly walk right by a mob of agitated zombies into the police station so easily after doing one little thing the first time you try to enter. It doesn't detract from the story or the fun at all, just an interesting observation.
I recommend this game!

Well I have to admit that I'm not a connoisseur of the M3 genre as so many of you are, but I do like it as a diversion from the usual adventure/hidden object games that I normally play. So I guess my expectations weren't too high as I sort of liked this game. I made the size bigger so I didn't find the objects too tiny like some did and I thought the sounds and music were cute. I'm a sucker for animals too so I think my opinion may be skewed because of that, but it looked like every other M3 game I've played before, so I really don't have many bad things to say about this game other than the fact that I didn't learn to cook like the promise made in the description. lol
Seriously though, from reading the negative reviews here, I see that much more was expected in the gameplay, especially in the story part. I respect that and agree then that those real fans of the genre got shafted with this one as I've learned that there are so many better developed games than this one, and those that expected more got far less. I therefore belong to the beginner crowd where this game is concerned because I enjoyed the demo well enough to try it but don't like it enough to buy. It was fun to play for an hour though and for those who may prefer a much simpler, bare-bones form of M3, I will recommend Panda Gourmet. Cheers!
I recommend this game!

The MCF series seems to have peaked with Dire Grove and has gone steadily downhill since then, according to the general reviews of the later games. With that said, I wanted to go back in time and play the earlier games to see how they looked with the technology that was available at the time. Madame Fate and the Ravenhearst games were known for their junkpile HO scenes and Prime Suspects is no better, but it would be unfair for me to compare it to the later games since those ARE expected to get better with time and the advanced technology. What I didn't like here was the timed feature of Prime Suspects, as I find it too stressful to be fun and I play for relaxation and the ability to observe the entire landscape at my leisure. I tend to appreciate games more when I can just sit and gaze at the beauty and talent that went into each scene and I couldn't do that with this game. It was just hurry and try to find each item as quickly as I can and I hated that. In addition, I detested the flashlight aspect to finding hidden objects. I found it to be not challenging but absurd. I like to read the entire word list first and then scan the picture as a whole. That way, I come across the items in a more natural way and I find that to be much more fun than trying to find a single item within a small circle of light. The puzzle at the end of each suspect's investigation was repetitious so it became tedious quite quickly. And the hints were limited so you really had to plan when you thought you REALLY needed to use one! It just took too much of the fun away for me. In that respect, I'm spoiled by the newer games that have hints that refill after a time. I just knew that I'd never play this game again since I own so many others that I enjoy more and that I've replayed often.
My review of Prime Suspects was based on the hour demo. Judging by some other reviews here, the demo is representative of how the remainder of the game plays out. I couldn't wait for the demo to be over so it's obviously a no buy for me, but I can't in good conscience give it a thumbs down for others to enjoy. Prime Suspects came early in the series and many people obviously are still playing it and love it. And for those who love the series as a whole and want the entire collection, by all means get this one too! MCF has been one of the more successful and innovative series in computer gaming and it's interesting to see how the games have progressed over the years. It's just not for me but I'll still recommend it for those who fancy it.
I recommend this game!

I stumbled across this game while reviewing the forums for another one and Samorost was mentioned. Although that game is the prequel to this one (BF does not offer the original...why not, BF?), I tried it out and, surprisingly, I liked it well enough to consider maybe purchasing at a later date on a sale. This game is different from others in that there's no hint sytem, journal, or map available to aid you and it's very much an old style adventure game where you just click around to see what moves on the screen. The demo is only 15 minutes long so it's a short game overall, but you have to complete a logical sequence of moves in order to progress in the story. There are cute animations, sounds, and music throughout and it's done in a funny cartoon style, so I think there may be a lot to like here and it doesn't seem overly complicated. It's in the same vein like The Tiny Bang Story in that you have to figure out yourself how to navigate and what the tasks are, but Samorost seems to be much easier than TTBS.
It's hard to describe the looks of this game unless you try it out for yourself, so please do. It's only 15 minutes of your time but you should be able to make an educated guess as to whether or not you'll like it enough to buy.
I recommend this game!

I always play on the easiest mode and finished the game in just under five hours. I probably could've finished sooner but I dawdled because I loved taking in all the pretty details of each snowy scene. The graphics were absolutely beautiful and I loved the wintry scenery with the falling snow. The music was repetitious and didn't quite seem suited to the atmosphere, but the outdoor sounds were adequate in creating a feeling of cold throughout. There is no map but you don't really need it as the backtracking is logical for the items you're looking for and where to use them. And having no map makes it the perfect adventure game in the purest sense of the word. I actually enjoyed the back and forth because it gave me a reason to take in all the details of each gorgeous scene. Everything was outlined so that the appearance is crisp and clear, and the items in the hidden object scenes were large and not junkpiles. The only gripe I have is that there is a single sparkle that appears where you have an interactive item to find. I prefer to find them on my own where I move my mouse around and the cursor changes. It changes here too but you get the single sparkle before you have a chance to search for it yourself.
The minigames are on the easy side but some require patience to manipulate the objects therein. Although I knew how to solve the puzzles, I sometimes used the skip button when I got impatient and just wanted to move along in the game. The hint button is helpful outside of the HO scenes too.
The story is good but the ending wasn't really the end and the game just stopped abruptly. From what I understand, the ending concludes in the CE, which I think is a rotten thing to pull on us. The CE is supposed to be bonus play going beyond the completed main story, not being the end to the original story itself. I feel cheated because I am not interested in bonus play, wallpapers, screensavers, concept art or the media gallery. I just want to play the complete game without the bells and whistles, but I DO expect closure to the story and I didn't get it in this game. I had no idea that this wasn't complete. I'm recommending this game with reservations since I enjoyed what I played, but am including a warning to others that you won't get the ending unless you shell out the extra bucks for the CE. Boo to the devs on this one! You won't be getting any more of my money.
I recommend this game!

I was excited to see this game because I loved Broken Tune, but I never got past the trial hour. For starters, the inventory was invisible unless I got out of widescreen, which I hated because I don't like seeing my desktop around the game borders. I don't feel like I'm immersed in the storyline so it takes away from the gameplay. Also, items in the HO scenes were hard to pick up unless you click below the item and not directly on it. Until I realized this, it was maddening to click on items that I knew were correct but wouldn't pick up. I don't know if this was just a glitch because it seemed to get better the longer I played, but there were just SO MANY hidden object scenes in the trial that I knew this was a no buy for me. I learned absolutely nothing more about the story because the gameplay was so slow and just dragged along. And if the trial hour is representative of the number of HO scenes there are in each hour, then prepare yourself for an onslaught. I prefer the adventuring aspect to HO scenes and don't mind a few, but this was ridiculous and really slowed down the gameplay for me. The graphics are nice and crisp enough and the imp made a couple appearances, but the trial hour was just not fun for me and I am not impressed enough to want to purchase.
I don't recommend this game.
