For once the story line takes place in the more modern 1980's than 1800's in a mansion offering a room for a more than reasonable rental rate - why? Once you begin investigating the mansion (after you sign the lease of course) you come across many not quite so copacetic offerings - like a head in a jar being kept alive that warns you to leave. I usually play the SE and CE versions of the trials to see if the game is hard enough to require a strategy guide (if one is available in the SE). I was surprised to see how far I had gotten and only used the strategy guide about 3 times and that was because I had forgotten where I had found items during the SE version of my play. I didn't find the game difficult but would advise beginners to get the CE version for the strategy guide. More experienced players, the bonus offers in the CE are a good lure. Glam-ma says this is a must buy.
I recommend this game!

Strange Cases: The Lighthouse Mystery Collector's Edition
Claire’s partner has turned up dead, and police claim it was a suicide. Discover the truth in this fun Collector’s Edition!
I always try to do the test run on both the SE and CE to see if a strategy guide is needed (if available). In this particular game of the series I don't believe it is because I made it quite far (finished the demo w/12 minutes to spare) without needing anything but hints. The CE does offer a sneak peak at the next game so that of course lures me to purchase the CE. Tara is excellent in the beginning by finding amazing clues to this mystery from the very beginning - is it suicide? What do the clues show? My particular gripe-and not just from this game-is I like "talkies" and not "bubble conversations". I want to look at what's going on while listening rather than having to stop and read. Overall, good game, good storyline and okay for a beginner. Glam-ma gives it 4 stars.
I spent 2 hours playing both the SE and CE of this game because I like to see if a strategy guide is necessary, if available. I don't believe it is because the hints were very helpful. The storyline was great, the interaction among characters, especially Rudy, was very realistic. I did get farther during the 2nd playing w/o using the strategy guide once but I will not give a spoiler - what happens when mom Clarice faces the monster with the antimonster machine? Does her son return? This gets a 5+ in my personal book of game reviews. I am purchasing it now!
I tried this game both with the collector's edition and without and would highly recommend getting the CE because during the regular game the hints would say "there is nothing more to do in this area so go elsewhere" while the CE integrated strategy guide would get me through a thing or two or three in that very area at that very same time. My big disappointment and disillusionment (hah) was you're into the game for a good hour and still no evidence of a storyline other than a plane crash 50 years after Houdini's death. I wouldn't consider purchasing a game without a little more depth than that but, hey, that's just this glam-ma.
Welcome to Top Secret Finders. Your first mission is to save a small town, uncover the truth about a government conspiracy and stop the villain in his tracks!
The game could almost play itself. The hints were not only extremely helpful but had this thing I have only rarely seen in games. Click on the hint and a mini-pic shows up that says "you should go there" and a "go" button to click on to get you there. The game itself is not my cup of tea (government conspiracies, etc.) but for someone just beginning this is a very easy cup of tea that you might want to try. A big however falls behind (always a "but" isn't there"), the ever present and annoying police siren would drive a saint to distraction. Just saying.
First of all, you have to click on like a bajillion fireflies to fill up the "?" "hint" button which really isn't one after all because there are no hints, skips or anything to give you the least amount of assistance during this game. After an hour I did find a number of things and maybe if I had gotten further into this game I would have caught on but to me it was sheer torture but I had to continue until the trial was over to give it a fair chance. For starters or even intermediates (of which I consider myself both depending on the game) run - run away fast! This is a game for the geniuses out there and no one else.
I don't recommend this game.

Strange Cases: The Faces of Vengeance
Agent Claire Ellery must rescue her young ward, but this masked kidnapper has set deadly traps in the abandoned mall!
Who would have thought I like being an investigative agent or that I had it in me. I really like all the games in the Strange Cases series and had only trouble (may need to get the strategy guide) for one and that is Grey Mist Lake which I think is my favorite-don't much care for the modern fare (go figure - I'm a "period" grandma - older the better). But getting through the trials was a breeze and hated when they were over so they go in my personal book of "reviews" of what I want on a scale of 1-5 they rate high. The only problem I had with this particular game in the series - while in Sarah's garage - I am a girl's girl - I have no clue what a clamp handle looks like and the walkthrough available didn't like so I had to quit playing before the time was up and may not get this one because I don't want to spend hours looking for it. Otherwise, great series of serious investigative work!
Within the hour trial period you can get a good enough judgement of whether you like a game well enough to purchase it or not and what your opinion is, strong or whatever. This game. I didn't get the concept. The hints were useless. I finally figured out myself that you had to travel through 6 places before finishing a level and in those places is where you would find your HOs not in 1 level but throughout the 6 - not really explained. It was difficult and finding your way back to get to the next level was near impossible. I'm no wuss but this game was awful.
When the free trial ended (cuz grandma's gotta try everything) my reaction was "argh". I wanted more! It's not as hard or challenging as the majority of adventure of HOG games I like to play but it was a nice storyline (I happen to like the whole olden times/fantasy genre). During the trial I didn't get the impression that it was going to be a very long game but, you know what, they don't all have to be. On my short list of games to get!
This is not my usual type of game. Yes, I like the scary, intrigue and adventurous games and hidden object games but sometimes you just need something different and this is it. After I played the trial (I'll try anything) I didn't want to stop - ever. It's such a cute game. And the gnomes! How can you not want to help gnomes! The music is upbeat and I absolutely love when you succeed at a level the townspeople jump up and down and shout what a great job you did and yay and etc. Corny, I know. But, sometimes you need a bit of corny in your life. And besides, I love gnomes.
