I played the demo for about 30 minutes. The story was really enticing and I wanted to find out more. But I found the HOs too hard to find. The paintings are very beautiful and the music relaxing. But I just got more and more stressed as I tried to find the HOs without success. I didn't find out what happens when you run out of hints, because I quit before I did.
This is based on the demo only. I managed about 40 minutes of it before stepping out. Pros: Terrific graphics and sound effects Ambience feels just like a sinking ocean liner. Good enough to create the kind of anxiety and fear one would experience on a sinking ship. Cons: Ambience feels just like a sinking ocean liner. My stress and fear levels were very high from trying to navigate this game. So I decided to stop. HOS are too difficult and too distracting. I like my HOs to flow right along, and some objects I couldn't find even with the hint. Neutral: Navigation is difficult, but I think that goes with the theme of the game. I recommend the game, but not if you're afraid of the water, tight spaces or death in general.
The residents of Bitterford, Maine have fallen prey to a terrible curse. It’s up to you to unravel the series of mysterious events that led to the town’s downfall and uncover the evil that was responsible.
I like these types of games usually, and have bought every other MCF game available for the Mac. I only played the demo here and did not finish the hour before giving up. I want to play a game. This is not a game; it's a movie. Cut scene on top of cut scene, and all the action takes place in the cut scenes, not in the play. I had almost nothing to do during my 48 minutes. Everyone else has said everything that needs to be said about the strategy guide (not). I haven't yet decided whether it's worth buying this to get half-off a couple of other CE's, but if I do buy it, it's not because I liked it.
I played the DEMO. I think this was a LOT better than other Hdo games I've played - not enough for me to buy it though. A really good story mucked up with teeny, tiny HO's that you need a magnifier for, and things that simply aren't what they say they are: standout is mistaking the Chrysler Building for the Empire State Building. This could have been a really fun game. But it was basically a chore. . .
I played the demo and am deciding whether I will purchase the full game. The story is terrific - a take off from the end of the classic "Beauty and the Beast" tale. All the scenes a really lovely to look at. The game play is fun. The problem I have is my 13" screen. The objects in the HO scenes are tiny, as are some of the pick up items in other scenes. So I recommend the game if you have a big screen, but a big CAUTION is you work on a small screen laptop as I do.
I read all the reviews before trying the demo. I couldn't believe this game was this lame. I usually finish the demos even if I decide not to buy. Lasted 12 minutes on this one. HOS that show one pixel of an item - they gotta be kidding! Even at 2.99 this is not a bargain.
I just finished playing the CE of House of Brass. This is a really beautiful game with great graphics and a compelling story. The HOS are unique where the challenge is to find items of a type rather than a list. The puzzles are very interesting although some of them were too difficult for me, so I'm thankful for the skip button. Sometimes, I got lost and for those who don't like going back-n-forth, there is a lot of that. (I try not to use the guide so probably got lost more than necessary.) I didn't time how long it took, but it felt like sufficient amount of time for the price.
The reason for the 3-star rating is the bonus chapter of the CE. It was LAME. Except for the graphics quality, it lacked everything else that made the main game really wonderful. It was not worth the extra $$. So my recommendation would be to buy the SE, unless you want screen savers, music clips, and the chance to replay the puzzles you couldn't figure out in the main game. (That was actually worthwhile and fun!)
This is my kind of game! Sweet story, nice graphics, puzzles that are easy enough to keep the game flowing (event though I still had to use the hint a few times in the HO scenes). It was like reading a book: I could walk away at the end of each "chapter" and not have to spend time backtracking to figure out where I was and what I had to do next when I returned. Lots of fun.
Two downsides: the music was forgettable and annoying. Bigger disappointment though was the game length. When I looked at that picture gallery I was expecting 12 or more chapters, not the 5 I actually got. Maybe they'll make another game with more chapters. . . But that didn't take away the fun!
Couldn't believe that the game could be as frustrating as other reviews suggested. So I just had to try it. Not fun. I'm not sure if it's just too challenging for my skills, or a poorly constructed game. Random clicks - exactly. You can't even intuit what the developers want you to do.
I don't usually comment on games, but I can't be the only casual player out there. This game has no HINT button except in the HOS. I'm reading reviews of everyone finishing the demo in mere minutes even without the hints. It took me the entire hour to get off the train and into the train station (the first scene), so I really don't know where this game is going. Not sure whether to buy it at this point. Some people need a hint or 6 to be able to move forward in even simple games.
