I always include my love of a compelling story in my reviews, and that affects my score completely. So the low score here reflects a poor story that is all over the place, and practically incoherent. I think others might enjoy some of the mini puzzles and the morphing objects. It got boring for me and I quit before the demo ended. Just not for me. It might be wonderful for young players. Maybe. Another reviewer will give you all the details of the game-she's so good at it that I don't even attempt it. (ahem...red star...ahem :) ) I added an old game as my current favorite. You should try that one to compare. Reviewer's favorite games are one of the best things about reviews. It gives you solid recommendations of games to try.
First, a caveat: I get really annoyed when voice actors can't read well. Especially when they take something as intriguing as a Medieval device such as a bestiary and call it a "beast-diary". That's as close as I can imagine spelling the mispronunciation. And many will probably say, why quibble? Because quality matters. And somebody did their homework with the whole concept of bestiaries and that should be respected. The visuals were cartoonish so not to my taste. Please try it to judge for yourself. Some of the mini games were inventive, but some of the devices were beyond absurd-you use a stamp to open the seat of the troll where you find, of course, a piano keyboard missing several keys. Naturally. So overall, I found this dumbed down and unappealing, so a definite no buy for me. Sorry, innovative story person who researched bestiaries. Your crew let you down.
I paid nearly full price for this game because I couldn't wait for the weekend sales. I never do that. But when faced with a weird innovative game with, yes, some familiar tropes (does no one realize the flags on a mailbox are to alert your carrier there's outgoing mail?) but then a twist into game play I haven't seen before, and gasp, struggled with, I'm sold. Add to that some actually tough HO puzzles, with shifting screens, so grab it while you can! Yes! and art, some of which is so beautiful, I was actually moved. There are a series of children's book pages that have hidden objects, reminiscent of my absolute favorite artist of children's stories, Arthur Rackham. This convinced me I was in the presence of game greatness, and I encourage you to give it a try. And torture yourself finding all the tiny keys hidden in the CE version. Muwahahaahahahaaha.
Well, this game is surprisingly awful. It comes off like an attempt by a novice game developer in the very early years. You begin with no choice of level of game play-it just starts. And although the forced tutorial isn't the worst, I really detest tutorials. So I was put off to begin. But I'm an open minded human so I gave it a chance. For ten minutes. Then the absurdly easy HOs just deflated the whole thing. Sorry, but this game seems like it would only please someone younger than 10 years. It evens looks like it was drawn by a young girl dreaming of the perfect wedding and the perfect mate and the perfect honeymoon segueing into ... a nonsensical mystery? Ok.

I'm really puzzled at the positive reviews of this game. It's pretty awful. It steals storylines from Potter (the mirror of Erised), Pinocchio (Evil Master, make me a real boy) and even Twilight (I'm chaaaaanging). So an incohesive story that's a real mess. But, although I'm a story person, and I really want the story to be plausible and engrossing, I'll still play a game to the end if the gameplay is good. Not the case here. Easy to the point of immature. So I dumped the demo. I found it that tedious. Sorry, developers.
Early Phantasmats are some of the best, most complex games I've played so this entry must be compared, and it did not come out well. It veers off into a weird killer theme more like the Haunted Hotel story lines. I found it quite disappointing, and even boring. Not a great sign when you just want it to be over because you tend to finish any game you start. I hope this isn't an indicator of the Phantasmat series' future.

This game had me wondering if my Win10 was having seizures again, but no! It was just really awkward cinematics. But (big but) it's a really fun game. The art is wonderful and the voice actors are superb which I find to be rare, and the bad ones are enough to kill a game for me. The logic is sometimes there in the storyline and sometimes it's out the window, but if you can relax and let that go, you'll have some fun with some unusual minigames. You'll see alot of what you've seen before-repair that wooden wheel or you're stuck, etc. but at least presented in a different way than usual. Anyway, I really liked it. It appealed to my sense of the ridiculous and was beautiful and engaging on the way. Do try the demo, I can see not everyone will be able to get past the awkward start and the weird animation. But you might find it amusing and refreshing, like I did.
I'm surprised this has gotten the positive reviews it has. I'm trying to imagine being a gaming novice-would I have liked this game then? I just don't think so. So unchallenging, so simple-a connect four game, match the runes game. Yawn. The storyline didn't have what it needed to draw me in, so I was bored and uncaring and hoping it would be over soon. I didn't like the savvy, sarcastic voice of the main character either. Yikes, it feels bad to say this because I believe developers work very hard to create these games. Sorry, MadHead, this one was a poor effort. I think people should play some of the old games to see what could be-Mystery Case Files or the Phantasmats.
I played the whole game and the bonus. It was at best mediocre which was disappointing to me because I liked the Haunted Hotel creepiness quite a bit, and looked forward to another installment. This game became another find the shape to open the thing game. And repeatedly. Another shape, another key, and a mini-game thrown in now and then. Some of the mini-games were entertaining, but overall they were the same kind of thing we've seen before-swap places to complete a puzzle, slider games, set the numbers to proper levels. Just nothing new. My biggest complaint though, and maybe it's just me? is the lamentable voice acting. Just because someone can read doesn't mean they can act. The "Doctor" was laughable when I wasn't irritated. I loved Elephant games in the past. Not this one though. Please, as always, trial it and judge for yourself.
I don't feel great about this because I generally like this developer. But this was a game of tedium. All been done before, and better. There's a mix of middle earth and potter and some mediaeval stuff to make sure nothing was missed. Oh, and it's in 2017. Wut? Not challenging and trying to be dark with threats of 'off with his head' to noncompliant minions. The story was weak as well as hackneyed. So meh. Please try it yourself because this may be new and fresh to you. Trial it first though.
