This is actually a prequel to Vampire Saga: H e ll Lock (I recognized the origin of a jump scare from that game lol). {apparently BFG doesn't like the word h-e-l-l so I had to space it out in that title so it would even let me publish this?} never played Vampire Saga: Pandora's Box so I'm not sure if that game ties in with these two. Anyway in this one you play a doctor grieving the death of his young daughter and you go to Hill Lock to check out a strange dead body there...and find yourself in the middle of a horror story!
If you played Vampire Saga: H e ll Lock then you will recognize a lot of the locations, like the church, the house, the mines, I think the morgue is from that game also but I personally enjoyed this game much much better. This was a much more friendly user game, it wasn't all over the place and just more fun overall. H e ll Lock was a little spookier but this one was just better to me.
You get a journal which gives lots of details about what is going on so be sure to read it. The only thing I liked about H e ll Lock better was that you had the opportunity to take photos that allowed you to shortcut to areas you needed to be in; in Break Out you don't get that option you have to take the long way around like you do in most games anyway so I guess it's not that big of a deal. You get the hint and skips as usual.
The HOS scenes are a little different, you don't look for a objects from a list; instead you get a visual list and have to find a certain amount of items that match and they either all combine to make one item (like in a FrOG) or they uncover a separate item altogether.
Overall, this was a great game with a slightly bittersweet ending but to me it was a better ending than its predecessor. So check it out! :)
This is the sequel to House of 1000 Doors: Family Secrets. This one picks up about a year after the events in the last game. You once again play Kate Reed as she heads back to the house. This time you have to save the house from a demon curse by collecting skulls hidden in the portals of 4 countries (Tibet, India, Jerusalem, and Madagascar) and the demon gem itself in order to destroy it. Very fun adventurous style settings.
The puzzles were VERY easy. I can say that because I usually suck at puzzles but these were a breeze so if you want really hard puzzles don't play this one (lol). You aren't overwhelmed with HOS scenes, I know a lot of people complain about that haha. In the CE (not sure if this will be in SE), you can find bonus morphing objects but I'm not sure what the prize is for finding them all as I don't normally care to find those things.
I sort of wish that you saw more of the family members (like Saymon) more like in the last game but one bonus is that you finally meet the master of the house!
Bonus Content made the game worthwhile. You find out the master is sick and you have to travel to his childhood home to find a cure. That part alone made buying the CE worth it. I kind of liked that part more than the main game but that's just because it centered around one of the family members.
You get the journal which is useful as always and a very handy map that lets you know where something needs to be done and lets you skip over to that area quickly.
Anyway fun game, if you liked the first one then check this one out :)
Sure, the plot is familiar: you get in a car crash, wake up in hospital (normally deserted), can't find child/husband/etc., something weird's going on in the town and the with the people like becoming monsters or being terrorized by one, use clues and items to find missing loved one and solve mystery of town before escaping. And if you're like me, then you probably get kinda bored and tired with that storyline. Well, good news! This game is actually a refreshing take on that set up!
First of all, I'm so glad that this game doesn't beat you upside the head with the town's "secret" and make you find out the conspiracy theory or whatever. That part isn't even important in this game. What IS important is that you simply find your child and get the heck outta Dodge (or in this case Livingston). Nothing more, nothing less. And yeah there's "monsters" around but they don't do anything to you and they don't do too many annoying jump scares to where it becomes a bore and too expected. Also, this game doesn't do the whole "chase your kid around trying to catch up to her/him every 30 minutes only to be immediately blocked by something once you like 10 feet from them". You just maneuver yourself through town gathering a few clues as to what direction she went in and go from there. No villain to defeat either, it's all basically a "get the kid, get out" type game. Very refreshing in my opinion. And the atmosphere is awesomely spooky!
There's no journal to use since the puzzles in this game don't require an item to be found or even a clue to figure them out. Pretty easy puzzles to figure out but not like baby-easy or anything. There is a map but I have no idea what it's purpose was as it only tells you what your current position is and nothing more. You do get hints and skips for the puzzles. There's not an overwhelming amount of HOG's for those that are tired of doing those. Maybe one or two per each town section you complete, which takes a while.
Anyway, I really enjoyed it, it was nice to have a familiar plot line being refreshed this way. I got the chills a few times so that's a plus in my book. Check it out!
Just to clarify, this is the third game in the series even though storyline-wise it is the direct sequel to "Curse of the Opera" (the first game). If you want to play them in chronological order, play "Asylum Conspiracy" first then "Opera" then this one. However, I don't suggest doing it that way because if you play "Asylum" first, you will ruin the awesomeness that is "Opera" and spoil the surprises. So I suggest playing them in order that they were released: "Opera", "Asylum", "Black Heart".
"Curse of the Opera" is one of my favorite games ever on this site and was glad to see a direct sequel had come out. I didn't really care for "Asylum Conspiracy" since a lot of details just didn't add up to the way they were in "Opera". "Black Heart" doesn't worry about going back in the past though, it focuses on finishing up the storyline and that's how it should be. I liked that they brought some characters back and tied them into this game. The finale was pretty lame though if you ask me. There wasn't even a final puzzle, you just literally click something to put in your inventory and then place it somewhere else and then that's it, you get the final cut scene and it's game over. Could have been waaaay more exciting.
Anyway, the puzzles are relatively easy and there are thankfully not an overload of HOG's, you only revisit a few scenes maybe twice and they are spaced out pretty well. The journal contains your basic clues/storyline observations, and the audiotapes section like from "Asylum", and also a very handy map that lets you know when something of interest needs to be investigated in other rooms.
Overall, not a bad game, but seeing as how it's possibly the last game in the series I would have preferred to see it go out with more of a bang. The scenario we get as been done repeatedly (someone gets kidnapped, you have to save them, blah blah). But it's still not bad, if you like this series and want to know what happens to these people then check it out!
I recommend this game!

The only downfall is that it is too short! I finished it in 2 hours. Very surprised. When the ending came, I was like "wow, that's it?". The puzzles are easy and the different stages don't take long to complete. However, it IS a very fun game. The graphics are gorgeous and the sound effects are very fitting. There's no voice acting which is perfectly fine. The journal is pretty detailed and helpful.
SPOILERS: The fairies are hilarious, they really made me laugh. Couldn't help but think that the faun (or satyr) character was basically Mr. Tumnus from the Narnia book series in a different setting, I mean the one for the game had the exact same problem (being hired by the witch to lure people to her trap and then coming to regret it and working against her).
Anyway great game, even if really short. Good to pass a lazy afternoon with when you have a little time to spare :)
This is by far my favorite MCF game. It is probably my favorite game PERIOD. I love everything about it. I am from Louisiana and a lot of the characters, settings (minus all the garbage lol), and just overall feel of it felt very "down home" to me. Love all the characters, they're so quirky and fun and you can't help but laugh at some of them and even laugh at the things that you have to do in order to get a clue or get some help from someone. Love how everyone is a real person and the way you "interrogate them" as opposed to just clicking on them and they go ahead and tell you everything you need to hear in one take. You could tell they were all having fun with this.
Puzzles are just hard enough to make you think about it but not too hard to make you want to pull your hair out. I think the only thing I don't care for is that there's a "voodoo" lady with a shop downtown, I mean come on, not every single small town in Louisiana has a voodoo shop lol (there's one in every game taking place in LA however) but she doesn't really play a big role I guess so it's not that bad.
Bonus game, it's not necessary to play, but it is still fun and gives a better glimpse at the pirate legend that everyone in the main game talks about. The music is just perfect for the location. It's just a great game, like I said it's quite possibly my favorite game on the site. Check it out :)
THIS is a game that really sucks you into its atmosphere. You get that feeling of being isolated all throughout the game which really increases the creepiness of the snowed-in village. The actors playing the grad students are amazing. I love watching the video clips of them because it's like watching a movie. Heck, the beginning of the game (where Master Detective is driving down the road in the car) LOOKS like a scene pulled straight out of a movie. It's that good. Love the whole game, one of my favorites.
This was a really fun game, the storyline draws you in right away and you really start to feel for these characters. Voice acting was great. This game really made me think, I had to use the hint button quite a bit because I couldn't remember where I had seen something that I wouldn't need until much later. Good use of the items and not making it "too easy" for us. The ending kinda sets up for a sequel (I played the SE version, not sure if CE has a different bonus ending or what) and if so that would be great :)
Wow, this game was great! Every level had HOG, FrOG (the fragmented hidden objects), puzzles, strategy...it had it all. Loved the variety within each level like that. It made each one feel like you really accomplished something when you got done. Really really fun game!
Obviously there's not going to be 1000 doors for you to go through, but there is great potential for this game to become a series so maybe they will get to 1000 after all.
Great game, loved the story of the house and all the inhabitants (ghosts and non-ghosts, lol). Animation was good, even the CGI parts were done well which was a pleasant surprise. Journal did excellent job keeping up with clues and the puzzles were fairly easy. I say that because I'm not good with puzzles and if I was able to complete them easily, then that must mean they are really easy to other people haha. The HOG scenes seemed to show up more frequently in the 2nd half of the game but it wasn't overwhelming. The items were all spaced out and not overly cluttered like in some games so they were quick to find. Looking forward to a sequel!
