Storyline

I grew up in Namariel, brought up by my uncle Davincino, an inventor of marvelous machines. He told me stories of how beautiful and wondrous Namariel once was, before the Iron Lord and his robotic minions invaded and enslaved us all. We always assumed that the King and Queen had been killed in the invasion, but knew the infant Princess had escaped.
One day, Davincino told me the time had come for me to seek out the seer Nostramus, who would instruct me how to deprive the Iron Lord of his powers and return Namariel to its natural beauty and give its citizens back their freedom. Before he could tell me much more, he was kidnapped by the Iron Lord's minions. I knew I had to rescue my uncle before the Iron Lord used his knowledge for evil.
Little did I know what surprises were in store for me, and the ways in which my courage, intuition, and skills would be tested. Fortunately, my uncle had trained me well, and provided me with two crucial implements: the Mindscope to read the minds of creatures who cannot verbally communicate, and Jim the 'Bot to help me acquire things out of my reach. And, thusly armed, I set off on the adventure of my life!
Being as Namariel had been treated unkindly by the Iron Lord's legions, I managed to scrounge a surprising variety of helpful items amongst the debris of their destruction. A vast number of puzzles ranging from fairly simple to rather complex hindered my progress, but I managed to overcome them all using a combination of my own observational skills and wit, as well as the found objects that littered the landscape.
From the twisted tunnels of a floating prison, to the magical forest of the Great Tree, to the Iron Lord's citadel, I relentlessly pursued my destiny. Aided by the kind denizens of Namariel and hindered by the Iron Lord's mechanical minions, I thought only of freeing my uncle and ridding my homeland of the usurper once and for all.
Notes: Shaman Games has presented another wondrous adventure with lush graphics, beautiful music, relatable characters, immersive gameplay, and a terrific plot. Namariel Legends is a pleasure to play, a wonderful mixture of magic and technology. From the main menu design to the cutscenes, the production value is high. I truly hope Shaman continues to release pure adventure games, and I highly recommend this one.
Hypnosis is not an awful introduction to the adventure game genre for the rank beginner, but any adventure game junkie like me will be bored. That having been said, I don't want to be unfair in my review.
The storyline, while not unique, was a good idea for a game, but was not developed thoroughly enough. The concept of the therapist entering the psyche of the patient offers endless graphical and gaming possibilities which the developer did not take advantage of. For example, the first patient is a female police detective...and her fear is being naked in public? Next we meet the cliched teenage rebel with parent and acceptance issues. C'mon.
Adventure mode was interesting, albeit too simple. I did like the animation when collecting or using an inventory item. But the use of the items was too predictable, and you used an item pretty much just after you collected it, so there was no thought involved.
The graphics were well done, including the animation. I do share the objection voiced by many reviewers that a female therapist would never dress like a pron star. Not if she wanted to be taken seriously in her field. (Yes, I know it's just a game. But things like this affect immersion. How can you accept her as a qualified therapist when her shirt's about to fall off?)
Battle mode should have been varied by using different types of puzzles for each phobia, perhaps relating the puzzle to the phobia. By the third battle, I was already clicking "skip" out of boredom.
Considering that I successfully analyzed two patients in less than 30 minutes, I'm going to go out on a limb and say the game is too short, especially for an adventure game (even a casual one).
I am disappointed, as pure adventure games are as rare as an honest politician. I really did want to like it, but it just couldn't keep my attention in spite of the surrealism, for which I'm a sucker.
STORY Linden Shades was once an unusual orphanage, a place where the children were happy and the staff was caring. Then the children began drawing images of a blood red ghost, and Linden Shades became a frightening place for everyone. The principal was certain someone was responsible, but the police were no help, even when she had proof.
Decades later, your editor offers you the chance to solve the mystery of Linden Shades. He believed the principal, but his career drew him away from the orphanage and the enigma remained unsolved. Are you brave enough to explore an abandoned orphanage? Can you reveal what happened at Linden Shades? Or will the blood red ghost frighten you away?
GAMEPLAY Lots of HOs with simple interactions, including many where you zoom in to place items into a case (like chocolates into a box). Many people had technical issues with this, including me, until I discovered you must click and drag the items into the case. If you just click on them, they disappear and you cannot progress. Just a heads up.
Puzzles are familiar and relatively easy: spot the differences, restore the image by swapping pieces, turn on all the lights, etc. The beauty of Linden Shades is in the way the story unfolds through the game. There are moments that will startle/frighten you, so this isn't one for the kids.
INTERFACE ✔ Map - shows active areas and transports ✔ Journal - gathers clues and tracks storyline ✔ Hint - identifies object in iHOs, I didn't use in adventure mode ✔ Lockable Inventory ✔ Black Bar Tips - gives clues in casual mode ✔ Other - collect the principal's cassette tape diary to learn the story
SETTINGS ✔ Sound Effects Volume ✔ Music Volume ✔ Voiceover Volume ✔ Fullscreen ✘ Widescreen ✘ Aspect Ratio ✔ Custom Cursor ✘ Toggle Active Area Sparkles ✘ Toggle Navigation Sparkles 3 Difficulty Modes
GRAPHICS & ANIMATION Cutscenes were done with live actors…and well done at that. In game animation was smooth and characters were well drawn. Background graphics were beautifully textural and moody. Objects were well rendered and clearly recognizable.
MUSIC & SOUND & VOICEOVERS The music was suitably creepy, but a bit repetitive. I would have like more ambient sounds…creaking doors and the like. Voiceovers were excellent.
ANALYSIS Excellent storyline-driven game. I played through without a break. It was not a long game (perhaps the CE is longer), but still well worth the SE price, IMO. Enjoyable gameplay, although a touch heavy on the HOs, though many will like that aspect.
You've arrived in the peaceful resort town of Aurora Peak to investigate some mysterious local crystals. But the devious plot you uncover there could endanger the entire world!
STORY Your grandfather developed a gorgeous resort at Aurora Peak which your brother Alan is now running. But strange changes are happening to the flora and fauna, and Alan has found some eldritch crystals he thinks are responsible. Since you're a geologist, he calls on you for help.
Upon your arrival, you see Aurora Peak undergoing mysterious changes. A bizarre energy field causes your helicopter to crash, a figure in a hazmat suit kidnaps Alan, the veterinarian's wife has gone missing, the resort manager is behaving oddly, and the plants and animals have undergone unnatural changes.
Bonus Adventure: Deactivate the crystals and make Aurora Peak safe for good.
GAMEPLAY Beautifully-rendered HO scenes include interactive list, sequential silhouette, and put the items back where they belong. Puzzles are largely unique, require thought and planning, and are pure eye candy. Mini-games include mixing solutions and building needed items. There's quite a lot to do in this game, with something for everyone.
INTERFACE ✔ Map - shows major objectives and transports ✔ Journal - gathers clues and tracks storyline ✔ Hint - identifies object in iHOs (didn't use in adventure mode) ✔ Lockable Inventory ✔ Black Bar Tips - gives clues even in medium difficulty
SETTINGS ✔ Sound Effects Volume ✔ Music Volume ✔ Voiceover Volume ✔ Fullscreen ✔ Widescreen ✘ Aspect Ratio ✔ Custom Cursor ✔ Toggle Active Area Sparkles ✔ Toggle Navigation Sparkles 3 Difficulty Modes
GRAPHICS & ANIMATION Wow. Amazing use of color and texture, light and shadow to create a realistic mountain landscape with those elements of the surreal the story requires. It was a pleasure to search each scene for needed items and morphing objects. Animation was smooth and, I'm glad to say, they didn't bother with lip-synching at all. I'd rather have no lip-synching than bad lip-synching!
MUSIC & SOUND & VOICEOVERS Beautiful music…unobtrusive and in the background for the most part, but rising to a crescendo to match turning points in the story. Very well done. Ambient and game sounds were thoughtfully done as well, and voiceovers were professional.
ANALYSIS This is close to perfect for me. Some might complain about the length, but I'd rather have quality than quantity. And this was quality in every area. Fun Factor was superb. Level of Challenge was perfect. Storyline was unique and engaging rather than another rehash. And the production value was high. As a bonus, there was a very subtle hint toward a sequel. I definitely recommend this game.
STORY Your friend, a private detective, asks for your help after being attacked by one of his clients. He tells you the client had him retrieve a map which, when he brought it home, caused disturbing events to begin occurring in his life. As you begin your investigation, the client, a shaman, appears and kidnaps your friend. Follow the clues and rescue him before it's too late.
GAMEPLAY Adventure with HO scenes, puzzles, and mini-games. The HOs are not interactive. Many of the puzzles and mini-games are unique and enjoyable. Also, collect scorpions in both adventure and HO modes.
INTERFACE ✔ Map - map areas have task lists, not a jump map ✔ Journal - gathers clues and tracks storyline ✔ Hint - identifies object in iHOs (didn't use in adventure mode) ✘ Lockable Inventory ✔ Black Bar Tips - gives clues in casual mode (very hand-holding)
SETTINGS ✔ Sound Effects Volume ✔ Music Volume ✘ Voiceover Volume ✔ Fullscreen ✘ Widescreen ✔ Aspect Ratio ✔ Custom Cursor ✘ Toggle Active Area Sparkles ✘ Toggle Navigation Sparkles 3 Difficulty Modes
GRAPHICS & ANIMATION The graphics are realistic, yet artistic (not photo-real), and quite beautiful. Animation is smooth and well done. Characters are posers and fairly lifelike in their movements.
MUSIC & SOUND & VOICEOVERS I'm afraid I didn't really notice the music or sound, so the best I can say is that it didn't annoy me. The voiceovers were melodramatic, IMO.
ANALYSIS This is a solid game with excellent puzzles and mini-games, fairly linear in adventure mode, but logical. The HOs are nothing special, but they are beautifully rendered. The storyline is unsurprising, but the game is complex enough to have replay value. I would recommend waiting for the SE because the bonus adventure was quite short and very easy, and there were no other extras.
The Emperor’s son has a mysterious illness. As legendary healer Daiyu, you’re called to the palace to save him, but you end up having to save yourself!
STORY You're a Chinese healer who's been called to the Palace to save the Emperor's son, who has mysteriously fallen ill. However, you soon uncover a devious plot to take over the Empire.
GAMEPLAY Inventory-driven point 'n' click adventure with iHOs, puzzles, and mini-games. The iHOs are of two types: interactive list and silhouette. The puzzles and mini-games range from simple to medium difficulty. Some are familiar and some are unique. The adventure aspect is mainly finding missing pieces of this and that, keys for locks, and the like. A new element is your herbal kit, which functions somewhat like a cooking game. Click on the appropriate tool while the moving slider is in the correct zone.
N.B. to Developers: If you're going to release a Mac version, please ensure you know what you're doing. We're tired of games that don't work with the trackpads on our MacBooks. Having to click several times to make something work is extremely frustrating. (This did NOT affect my rating of the game, as I have bought other games with this issue and happily hooked up a mouse to play them, because they were good games. It's just a pet peeve of mine.)
INTERFACE ✔ Map - shows active areas and transports. Unfortunately, it's located INSIDE the journal, making its usefulness limited. ✔ Journal - gathers clues and tracks storyline ✔ Hint - identifies object in iHOs, directional in adventure mode ✔ Lockable Inventory ✔ Black Bar Tips - gives clues in casual mode ✔ Other - herbal kit prepares potions
SETTINGS ✔ Sound Effects Volume ✔ Music Volume ✔ Voiceover Volume ✔ Fullscreen ✔ Widescreen ✘ Aspect Ratio ✔ HD Graphics ✔ Custom Cursor ✘ Toggle Active Area Sparkles ✘ Toggle Navigation Sparkles 3 Difficulty Modes
GRAPHICS & ANIMATION The background and close-up graphics are quite lovely, with excellent use of color and texture, light and shadow. The characters are a bit more primitive looking, and the lip synching is terrible. The cutscene animation is smooth, but pixelated.
MUSIC & SOUND & VOICEOVERS I honestly didn't notice the music because I generally turn it fairly low. Game and ambient sounds were well done. Voiceovers were just awful. Other than the Emperor's brother, the characters had clearly recognizable American accents.
ANALYSIS I found this game to be all flash and no substance. Gameplay was predictable and rather boring. Nothing new to see here. Even the herbal kit was uninteresting. The graphics alone were not enough to rivet me to the storyline, I'm afraid.
STORY You've been engaged by Sylvia Filler to solve the murder of her brother Ariman and to find peace for the ghosts of her ancestors. When you arrive at her estate, that pesky and creepy Saint Germaine is there, trying to get his grubby hands on the Book of Wishes. Like you need another task! Fortunately, he's fairly inept and you are, after all, a world class detective.
OVERVIEW I haven't been a fan of the Haunted Legends series, but The Curse of Vox has enchanted me. It's an incredibly complex game with a lot going on. In addition to navigating the adventure, iHOs, puzzles, and mini-games, you must find poltergeists, magic rings to free ghosts, and sprouts for your garden. Since I didn't even finish Chapter One during the demo, I'd certainly say it'll be a lengthy game.
GAMEPLAY Inventory-driven adventure with iHOs, puzzles, and mini-games. The iHOs are of two types: interactive list and sequential silhouette (find one object and use it to get the next). The puzzles and mini-games that appeared during the demo were of medium difficulty and, while not original, were presented in a graphically beautiful and unique way.
INTERFACE ✔ Map - shows active areas and transports ✔ Journal - gathers clues and tracks storyline ✔ Hint - identifies object in iHOs ✔ Lockable Inventory ✔ Black Bar Tips - gives clues in casual mode ✔ Other - magic necklace holds rings
SETTINGS ✔ Sound Effects Volume ✔ Music Volume ✔ Voiceover Volume ✔ Fullscreen ✔ Widescreen ✘ Aspect Ratio ✔ Custom Cursor ✘ Toggle Active Area Sparkles ✘ Toggle Navigation Sparkles 3 Difficulty Modes
GRAPHICS & ANIMATION Backgrounds are typical painterly ERS style, but with more detail…a much appreciated improvement. Close-ups, such as the iHOs and puzzles, are much more detailed. Beautiful use of color. And the animations are exquisite with lifelike lip synching.
MUSIC & SOUND & VOICEOVERS The music is very well done, as are both game and ambient sounds. Thankfully, that old ERS theme has been trashed. The voiceovers are superb. Saint Germaine is as creepy as ever.
ANALYSIS I've been pleasantly surprised by ERS several times recently, and I'm glad they've stepped up their game, pun intended. The Curse of Vox is a sterling example of casual gaming, and seems well worth the CE price. The storyline and characters are engaging, gameplay is immersive, and the game is lovely to the eyes and ears.
TITLE Calavera: Day of the Dead Collector's Edition demo
DEVELOPER Taba Games produced by Big Fish Games
GENRE Interactive Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure
STORY Catalina accepts Alan's marriage proposal, but wants her father's blessing, so the couple travels to Mexico, arriving in time for the Day of the Dead festival. At the train station, Alan discovers an animated talking book that warns him Catalina's in danger. But before they can leave, she's kidnapped skeletal figure who whisks her away in a flying train. Alan manages to hitch a ride and arrived in the Land of the Dead. Now he must find Catalina before it's too late.
GAMEPLAY Inventory-driven adventure with interactive HO scenes, puzzles, and arcade-style mini-games. The HO scenes are of the list type. The puzzles are mostly familiar but presented in context. The mini-games are unusual in that they are arcade-style, which makes Calavera a quite different game.
INTERFACE ✔ Map - shows active areas and transports ✔✘ Journal - it's the talking book ✔✘ Hint - identifies object in iHOs and is directional in adventure mode ✔✘ Black Bar Tips - are sporadic, some areas have none
SETTINGS ✔ Sound Effects Volume ✔ Music Volume ✘ Voiceover Volume ✔ Fullscreen ✘ Widescreen ✘ Aspect Ratio ✔ Custom Cursor ✘ Toggle Active Area Sparkles ✘ Toggle Navigation Sparkles 3 Difficulty Modes
GRAPHICS & ANIMATION Graphics have a handpainted appearance, but don't lack texture, detail, or color. Items in the HOs are clear and easily recognizable. In-game animation is smooth. Characters are somewhat cartoonish and there's no lip synching.
MUSIC & SOUND & VOICEOVERS I didn't notice the music, so it must have been neither spectacular nor annoying. Game sounds were appropriate and ambient sounds were done well. Voiceovers were humorous with tongue-in-cheek "Inigo Montoya" accents.
ANALYSIS I'm on the fence. The storyline is intriguing and I appreciate the humor, but I'm not a huge fan of the arcade-style mini-games. I prefer puzzles. Also, I saw no hint of a bonus adventure, so if achievements and collectibles are all the CE offers, I'd wait for the SE. I'll probably get this with a credit or game coupon when the SE comes out.
TITLE Living Legends: Ice Rose Standard Edition full game (about 3½ hours)
DEVELOPER 4 Friends Games produced by Big Fish Games
GENRE Interactive Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure good v evil fairy tale
STORY Your love Edward has gone to investigate evidence of a bizarre tragedy in Rosemount. Instead, he has gotten himself entangled in the coldhearted web of the Ice Queen. Under her spell, he is bound to restore her magic mirror, one shard at a time. You must rescue him and free the ghosts of Rosemount.
GAMEPLAY Standard point 'n' click, inventory-driven adventure interspersed with iHOs, puzzles, and mini-games. The iHOs are all of the list type with minimal interactions. The puzzles and mini-games are all familiar and range from simple to moderate difficulty.
INTERFACE ✗ Map - and there should have been a transport map! ✔Journal - gathers clues and tracks storyline ✔ Hint - identifies object in iHOs, "nothing to do here" in adventure mode ✔ Black Bar Tips - gives clues in casual mode
SETTINGS ✔ Sound Effects Volume ✔ Music Volume ✗ Voiceover Volume ✔ Fullscreen ✗ Widescreen ✗ Aspect Ratio ✔ Custom Cursor ✗ Toggle Active Area Sparkles ✗ Toggle Navigation Sparkles 3 Difficulty Modes
GRAPHICS & ANIMATION Graphics are painterly but with enough detail to make objects clearly recognizable. Backgrounds are less clear. Colors were mostly monotone blue in the backgrounds, but better in the iHOs and puzzles. In-game animation was smooth and detailed. Cutscene animation was smooth, but the characters were more static…no lip synching.
MUSIC & SOUND & VOICEOVERS The music was a bit repetitive; I turned it down. As a result, I missed much of the game and ambient sounds. No voiceovers.
CONCLUSION The second Living Legends, Frozen Beauty, is a far superior game in every way. Note that it is not a sequel, but a completely different story despite being another "winter" game. This one, Ice Rose, ends rather abruptly, and you're left to your imagination regarding the outcome. There is a hint of a sequel in a cheap, horror movie way. That having been said, I did enjoy playing this one, although I'm more likely to replay Frozen Beauty. And I did get Ice Rose with a Punch Card coupon. I recommend it as a DD.
TITLE Love Chronicles: Salvation Collector's Edition full game (about 5 hours) bonus adventure (a little over an hour)
DEVELOPER Vendel Games produced by Big Fish Games
GENRE Interactive Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure good v evil fairy tale
STORY Finally, after saving two kingdoms from the dastardly doings of the evil Alura, you're on your way home. But it's not over yet! She's attacking your kingdom now! Lucio, the good wizard, sends you back in time to prevent the dark wizard Zander from turning Alura's heart to the dark side, thus preventing the attack on your kingdom. And, presumably, on the kingdoms you already saved. I know…time travel is so confusing. Bonus Adventure: You and Alura return to your kingdom, but the backlash from Zander's evil has turned Lucio to stone. Travel to the Elf Kingdom to save him.
GAMEPLAY Inventory-driven adventure with iHOs, puzzles, and mini-games. The iHOs are of three types: (1) List, and a few items are interactive, (2) Sequential Silhouette, where you find items and use them in the scene, and (3) FROG Silhouette. There are a LOT of iHOs, but the graphics are so beautiful and the music so relaxing that even I, who normally detest HO-heavy games, enjoyed them. Puzzles and mini-games are mostly familiar and range from simple to difficult, a nice mix.
INTERFACE ☑ Map - shows active areas and transports ☑ Journal - gathers clues and tracks storyline ☑ Hint - identifies object in iHOs ☑ Black Bar Tips - gives clues in casual mode ☑ Other - jewelry chest holds amulets
SETTINGS ☑ Sound Effects Volume ☑ Music Volume ☑ Voiceover Volume ☑ Fullscreen ☐ Widescreen ☐ Aspect Ratio ☑ Custom Cursor ☐ Toggle Active Area Sparkles ☐ Toggle Navigation Sparkles 3 Difficulty Modes
GRAPHICS & ANIMATION The graphics are just lovely. Beautiful use of color, light and shadow, perspective, and texture to create scenes both enchanting and terrifying. Both in-game and cutscene animations are smooth and lip-synching is quite well done.
MUSIC & SOUND & VOICEOVERS The music…ah, the music. It's ethereal and ambient and everything game music should be, and it adds greatly to the player's immersion. Game sounds are appropriate, short, and non-intrusive. Ambient sounds are well done. Voiceovers are excellent. Really, the audio team deserves an award.
CONCLUSION I highly recommend Salvation. It's a departure from the previous two in the Love Chronicles series, but well worth it. For those who prefer to wait for the SE, the main game does end conclusively, and the CE does not have the bells and whistles most fishies expect, like morphing objects. However, I thought it was worth it for the bonus adventure and music alone.
