Legendary Tales Stolen Life is, I hope, the first game in a new series one of my favorite developers – Five – BN Games. Stolen Life is an incredible game and is most likely one of the best this year. I love this game that makes me remember what HOPA games used to be like. This developer’s games are few and far between and that is because each new game they release is top quality. If you can pick up the CE version of this game you will see that it is full of extras that other developers no longer take the time to add to their CEs. No matter which version of the game you purchase, you will quickly see that this is an excellent game and that will take you back to the days when HOPA games had substance. There is very little hand-holding in this game so you will need to think about what you need to do to move forward.
I’m not going to take the time to write a lengthy review. There are other reviewers who will provide all the details of the game if you want that information. I think gaming is more fun, at least for me, when I don’t know all the details before I begin playing.
By now most of you who read my reviews know that I am not a fan of having too many puzzles in HOPA games BUT, wait for it . . . I love the puzzles in Stolen Life. Most of the puzzles are the type I enjoy playing because I need to use my brain rather than those where I must duke it out with an opponent or avoid obstacles on a race downstream. The hidden object scenes are great because they are so interactive. I hate having to use the hint button while searching for objects in a HO scene but in Stolen Life I had to use it frequently because I was stuck and couldn’t figure out where to find some of the objects. The scenes are creative and took a long time to complete, at least for me, because they are complex with some very well-hidden places to search. It is terrific to play a HOS when I get to use my brain and not only my mouse.
When I say that this is probably one of the best HOPA games I have played all year, I mean it. Legendary Tales Stolen Life has so much to offer, not only with all of the extras included in the game, but because of the length of the game that took me a couple of days to complete. When a game is this good, I like to savor it and enjoy every little detail of the graphics, the puzzles, the HOS, and the extras. A Stolen Life is just that sort of game where it is worth taking the time to enjoy all of the details the developer has put in to the game.
As you have probably guessed by now the CE Version of the game was an instant purchase for me. I hit that buy button as soon as the game finished installing – no need to wait because I know the quality of games by this developer. Even if you purchase the standard version of the game, you will quickly find that Legendary Tales Stolen Life is something special. Happy gaming!

Labyrinths of the World Hearts of the Planet is possibly the most beautiful game in the Labyrinths series. I found the depth of coloring to be perfect to portray the beauty of this fantasy world while bringing its characters to life. There is no need for me to recap the storyline as that’s done on the game’s main page and by another reviewer.
As enticing as the storyline might and graphics might be, what almost put me off from purchasing the game was reading the review that as usual gave a breakdown of the HOPS and Puzzles. Once I know that there is an overabundance of Puzzles as opposed to HOPs, I am far less likely to purchase the game. I am a HOS lover and that is why I became a member of BFG some 16 years ago – not to play Puzzle laden HOPA games. In spite of the numerous complaints from myself and other gamers, some developers continue to ignore our pleas for balance between those two components of their games. At one time I purchased every CE that was released but that is no longer the case. I now purchase half the quantity of games that I once did here at BFG. Here’s the thing, If I want to know how many HOPs or Puzzles are in a CE game, I will wait until I play the game. I would not hesitate to say that BFG loses a good portion of its HOPA business simply because some reviewers continue to rattle off every little detail of a game. Why purchase a game when you can simply read a review?
Once I tried the demo for Hearts of the Planet I was hooked. I did enjoy the gameplay because it was not always easy to figure out what I needed to do next in order to move forward in the game. I enjoy any game that allows me to use my brain rather than holding my hand as I play. Recently there have been far too many games that pretty much tell the gamer what needs to happen next. Fortunately, Hearts of the Planet lets me think for myself and figure out my next step. If I am stuck there is always that trusty hint button to use.
The HOS are creative, well-designed, and offer the usual variety of styles. It seems to me that there is at least one HOS where I haven’t seen that style used in the past. Although I far prefer the HOS to Puzzles (guess you must know that by now), I did happen to enjoy some of the Puzzles, but I also skipped many others. I do like that most of the Puzzles can be set to either solve in either Easy or Hard mode. Even though you specify the default mode for playing the Puzzles if you selected the custom mode of gameplay, you could still switch to the other mode for each Puzzle if you wish. This is just a comment, but I believe that Domini is the original and only developer for the Labyrinths series.
For me, the gameplay in Hearts of the Planet is enjoyable because I prefer going back and forth between scenes to playing a game that is strictly linear. I love a game where I have a lot of inventory and need to remember where items are used. I’ve still not finished the game and consider it to be long. Of course, I am a slow player since I don’t want to miss anything and find myself looking at every detail in each scene.
Labyrinths of the World Hearts of Planet is a terrific game and one that I’ve enjoyed playing. As always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming

Family Mysteries Criminal Mindset is not the game I was expecting. I love HOPA games, but Criminal Mindset is a puzzle game with one puzzle after another with a few hidden object scenes thrown in to justify the HOPA designation. Although I enjoy a few puzzles in the HOPA games that I play, it becomes boring for me to solve too many puzzles particularly when they interrupt the storyline and the flow of the gameplay.
Aside from the issue of far too many puzzles in the game, I disliked the voiceovers. The voice of Richard was really quite terrible. One would think that the voice of a research assistant would not sound like the voice of a teenage girl at a birthday party. I don’t know why the developer chose the voice for Richard but it sure didn’t work for me. The voices of the man from Neurotech and the CIA agent were also awful. Even though the voiceovers were bad, the graphics were actually quite good, which is something I didn’t expect given the poor voiceovers.
The storyline was excellent, but the gameplay couldn’t keep me involved because of all the puzzles in the game. I hate having to interrupt the flow of gameplay to solve a puzzle that is thrown into a game as a time extender.
In the end Family Mysteries Criminal Mindset could have been a terrific game had it not been for the oversaturation of puzzles. I hope that if the developer creates another Family Mysteries game, they will back off a bit on the puzzles and create more hidden object scenes for those of us who love finding the objects and playing through creatively designed scenes.
There are some aspects of Family Mysteries Criminal Mindset that I enjoyed such as the storyline and the well-designed HOS. Had there been a better balance between the HOS and the puzzles I would have given the game a far higher rating but since there wasn’t, I am giving the game only two stars. Developers, please consider that many HOPA game lovers are not puzzle lovers and try to make future games those that both factions will enjoy playing.
Even though Criminal Mindset is a game that I don’t like, as always, please try the demo because it might be the perfect game for you. Happy gaming!

You have finally landed your dream job as a new H.E.L.P. linguist and you are off to Mexico to test your skills at the Temple of the Sun and the tomb of Coatlicue. So now begins another game in the Hidden Expedition series, or just maybe this is a different expedition.
What is positive about this new Hidden Expedition game is that the graphics are excellent and full of brilliant color but without all of the neon that is usually favored by this artistic team. Hidden Expedition the Price of Paradise has everything I enjoy in most games with gameplay that moves along at a good pace and a great storyline. What I consider a surprising negative is that this is definitely not a Hidden Expedition game. Our handy H.E.L.P. box that contained all of those wonderful fact cards that I loved to collect as I played is now MIA. There is nothing from the older HE games left after this developer seemed to move along its old path and gutted the original series. Why did they do that and, more importantly, why did BFG sanction that action? It is almost sacrilege to call the game Hidden Expedition. Why not ditch the original title along with the basic premise of the game and come up with a different title? This is only my opinion, but I am certain there will be others out there who will agree. All of the being said, the game is still a good game and I think I might have found it more enjoyable had it not been released as a Hidden Expedition game.
The HO scenes are good at least the “real ones”, meaning those that were list, silhouette, or matching types. I think the storybook scenes are simply a waste of time. Again, with this developer we have an unbalanced ratio of 2:1 with mini-games far outweighing the HOS. I realize that it takes far less energy for a developer to look into their catalog of mini-games and pop one into a current game than it does for them to create a hidden object scene.
Although I did like this game, I will say it again, it is not a Hidden Expedition game, so I deducted one point for the game’s the missing HELP box and fact cards, then another point because there are far more mini-games than HOS. Come on developers please give us more balance between the HOS and the mini-games because not all HOPA lovers enjoy puzzles. I vacillated between recommending the game or not, but decided that it is at least worth playing the demo and then you can decide if it is a game worth recommending. Please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. As Always - Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

It is hard to believe that it has been over twelve years since the first Haunted Hotel game was released. Way back then it would have been hard to imagine that the series would become a classic hit with gamers and that we are now looking at game nineteen in a series that, IMHO, should have been ended years ago. That being said, I decided to try the demo for Haunted Hotel Lost Time and was pleasantly surprised. The game wasn’t one of the best in the series, but it was surprisingly entertaining. I ended up purchasing the game and found the game play to be enjoyable.
The graphics are excellent as usual with the only exception being the HOS scenes that are sometimes so dark and blurry that it is extremely difficult to spot the items that should be found. I know it is old school to have very tiny items to be found but that is what I disliked about the early games. I am not saying that items should be in your face easy to find but they should not be almost invisible, which unfortunately is the case with Lost Time.
The puzzles were entertaining but the downfall is that they were so easy to solve and so familiar that it took the challenge of solving them away. The good thing about Haunted Hotel Lost Time is that there is a good balance between HOS and Puzzles. I am sure those who love puzzles will be disappointed that there are not more of them included in Lost Time, but I did enjoy the balance for a change.
There is a CE version of the game and if you happen to enjoy them you will find that the collectibles are the standard fare and the same thing that we see in every game from this developer. There is nothing new just the same picture pieces to collect, the same collectible statues, and the same morphing objects. Yes, there is the Strategy Guide, Wallpapers, Music, and a Secret Room but I don’t put those in the same category as finding well-hidden collectibles and morphing objects. I appreciate that the developer has added morphing objects to each scene but there should be some creativity with the collectibles. I question why I continue to purchase the CE releases when I could wait a couple of weeks and get the same game as an SE. It would make no difference to the game as far as I’m concerned.
The gameplay was enjoyable, and I didn’t mind at all that I had to go through more than one room before using an item that I found as I played the game. Even though I needed to backtrack in the game, for me at least it was more enjoyable than finding a key and then turning around to spot a shed that needed the key I just found. I happen to enjoy going back to locations to find the objects needed to progress in a game. Many gamers want the items available in the same room but that tends to make the games more linear. I remember when I started playing HO games and would have to go through many rooms and cart along a large inventory of items. It was far more enjoyable than this “find an object, use it immediately” type of gameplay.
Although Haunted Hotel Lost Time is not a five-star game it is still a good HOPA game and one that I did enjoy. Overall, the game was a bit too easy with too much hand-holding to give it a higher rating. However, I think the game does deserve four-stars because of the storyline and the gameplay that had me very involved as I moved through the various locations in the hotel. Even though I enjoyed the game, as always I recommend that you play the demo to see if Haunted Hotel Lost Time is a game you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!

Puppet Show Final Mistake is absolutely the best game in the Puppet Show series in years. I lost all interest in the Puppet Show games several years ago so it was quite a surprise when I found that I loved everything about Final Mistake.
The game has everything that make HOPA games fun to play. Although there are far more mini-games than HOS, I found myself enjoying the gameplay. Normally, I dislike finding almost twice as many mini-games as HOS in HOPA games, but it didn’t seem to bother me quite as much because I found that I enjoyed solving all of the mini-games with the exception of the few that I skipped as they were not my favorite type to solve. Because Final Mistake is such a wonderful game, I know that when I play it a second time, I will slow down and solve the handful of mini-games that I skipped the first time around.
The graphics in the game are beautiful and full of color. The artistic talent of the development team shines in every scene in the game. The original team created some of the most beautiful HOPA games that made me a huge fan of the genre. Although there is a warning in the beginning of the game about some violence, there was nothing I could see that would justify the need for that warning. The game has a good storyline that tied the package together and make Final Mistake a Puppet Show game that in my estimation is not a mistake at all. Since about the time that the seventh game in the Puppet Show series came along it was apparent that the series had dwindled to nothing more than cookie cutter games. With Final Mistake it is easy to see the difference, which has kept me immersed in the game much of the morning. I have been playing for almost five hours and have not yet reached the end of the original game. In recent years with so many HOPA games falling into the cookie cutter category, it’s not unusual for me to skip the Bonus Chapter but because Final Mistake is so terrific, I will definitely keep playing until I complete the Bonus Chapter.
The HOS are creative, interactive and a lot of fun. There is some variety in the HOS although many of the scenes are revisited more than once. If a scene is played a second time, there will a change in the style or type of scene. The mini-games were fun with various levels of challenge. I am not overly fond of mini-games but I did like the ones included in Final Mistake. I only skipped a couple of the mini-games that took more time to solve but I will solve them when I play the game a second time through.
Although the game is a Collector’s Edition, I didn’t really notice too much in the way of collectibles. There are no morphing objects which are what I enjoy most in CE games. Aside from the collectibles there is not much that I consider CE worthy except for the Strategy Guide and the handful of mechanical animals to be collected.
Puppet Show Final Mistake is such an excellent game that I highly recommend it to other HOPA gamers. In many ways the game seems “retro” in that it has a great storyline and a wonderful gameplay factor that has had me happily searching for items, playing mini-games, and learning more about Dr. Kingston, his assistant Natalie, and the cyborgs all morning. Even though I love Puppet Show Final Mistake, please try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy as well. Happy gaming!

fromA cup of tea and a very easy game make for a relaxing afternoon
Skill Level:Expert
In this latest game in the Enchanted Kingdom series you play the game as the daughter of Satur, a Forest Keeper with a big secret. As the game begins your dad is kidnapped by the wicked genie Sardonik and now you are off on a dangerous journey to save him.
One of the best things about this game is that we have a new and refreshing storyline, but along with the good comes the bad in that there is far too much hand-holding to make this game enjoyable for some of the more seasoned HOPA gamers. The game could easily be played by younger members of the family with little help from mom and/or dad.
The game has a lot to offer if you want an easy-peasy and relaxing way to spend a few hours of your time. The graphics are beautiful and although the developer uses a bright color palette, at least some of the colors are not as neon and artificial as they once were. It generally takes me a long time to play a game as I love to gawk at the scenery and every little detail, and this game has a lot to offer if good graphics are all that you want. Somehow even the beautiful graphics were not enough to hold my attention.
The HOPS are well crafted with some being better than others. I found that I enjoyed most of the HOS far more than I did the puzzles. Of course, there were still far more puzzles than HOS. Most of the puzzles were easy and I only skipped the maze puzzle because I couldn’t figure out what I needed to do.
Generally, I enjoy most games from this developer who creates some of my favorite games. Unfortunately, The Secret of the Golden Lamp is a bit too easy and I found myself able to play the game on auto-pilot. In the end, although I did purchase the game it will probably live somewhere on my computer gathering dust. As always, I recommend that you try the demo because The Secret of the Golden Lamp might be the perfect game for you. Happy gaming!
