Yes, folks as we enter autumn it is time for BFG to delight us with a bunch of scary games to fit the season – after all Halloween is right around the corner! Bonfire Stories Heartless is the second game in the series and for me it seems much better than The Faceless Gravedigger. This time around you play the game as Tom Gilbert who has been seeking answers for his father’s death during a camping trip to Calispell Forest. Year after year Tom, who is still haunted by nightmares after seeing his father captured by half-human beasts with the heads of animals. When Tom arrives at the campground he soon realizes that this year he might find the answers when another camper is dragged into the swirling red mist by the same creatures who took his dad years ago.
Since other reviewers have provided in-depth details of the game I will only tell you what I did or didn’t like about the game. For me this game is all about the storyline that grabbed me right from the beginning scene. It is not often that I am so engrossed in the storyline that when the demo ends I am totally surprised by how involved I was with the game. For me at least the game was a bit difficult because it was not always easy to figure out what my next step should be. Of course, there was always the obvious item that would be used right away but there is a lot of back and forth between scenes to find items and then remember where they fit. I don’t mind the back and forth between scenes as much as some gamers because for me it makes the game far more interesting when I must remember where I can use a specific item.
As much as I loved the storyline and trying to solve the mystery, for me the HOPS were a major disappointment. Although the HOPS might have been creative, or at least an attempt at something different, I think they are the weak point in the game. I disliked the scene after scene of finding twelve of a specific item or even finding sets of specific items. I much prefer the old school and more traditional HOP scenes where there is some interaction and a variety of items to find.
The puzzles were good and some were difficult but none, IMHO, were super challenging. Recently, I am seeing more of those toggle type puzzles in games and I dislike those particularly when there seems to be no consistent pattern to the sequence. There were some puzzles that I enjoyed such as those where you must remove posts in a particular sequence, or the one where you must move tokens simultaneously on different sides of a grid. All in all the puzzles were not horrible but I hope to see those toggle type puzzles go away!
As I mentioned above, for me the game was about the storyline and about the gameplay. I felt that this was an excellent game with terrific graphics and just the right touch of fear factor. There were times when I found myself holding my breath because I wasn’t sure what was behind the next door or hallway. The story was told in a very consistent manner and I wasn’t left feeling like it skipped all over the place and half was missing as happens with some games. As another reviewer noted, kudos to the script writer because they did an excellent job with telling this this Bonfire Story. The gameplay had me very entertained as I tried to rescue Margaret and get both of us out alive. Even though Bonfire Stories Heartless is one that I had to buy, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
Kingmaker Rise to the Throne is from a developer that I haven’t previously seen and I must say that, at least for me, this game is excellent. There has been so much attention to detail put into this game beginning with a great storyline, voiceovers that are spot on, and graphics that go a step beyond what we normally find in HOPA games. The realism creates a game that engaged me right from the beginning scenes.
Yes, it is still a HOPA game and although it does have a touch more adventure, we still will need to search HO scenes to find the items we need to progress in the game. The game seems a bit easy but I don’t always need a super challenge particularly when I play a game to relax. The beauty of this game is that I found myself involved in the action and felt like I was one of the Ulmer brothers trying to clear my name.
The HO scenes are varied and generally excellent. I enjoyed the first interactive silhouette type scene where I needed to find items to repair a boat but all of the scenes that I have played were the same quality scenes. The mini-games are fun and started off with one where I needed to get flags to the appropriate spot in order to open a saddlebag. The mini-games are not difficult but they are entertaining. I have found that I enjoy a game much more when the puzzles are solvable and I don’t need to use the skip button simply because t don’t understand the instructions.
Congratulations to the developer for creating such a wonderful game. I hope that we see more games from them in the future because I found Kingmaker Rise to the Throne to be one of the most engaging games I have played this year. As always, even though I happen to love this game, please try the demo. Happy gaming!
Vermillion Watch London Howling is the fifth and hopefully the final game in this series. This review will be another short one as I could find nothing that I really enjoyed or liked in the game. Yes, idiot that I am I purchased the full game hoping it would get better but it seemed to follow the same nonsensical storyline from the demo.
So why give this game a 1-star rating? The answer is simple: horrible storyline, and some of the worst puzzles I have found in HOPA games because the instructions were terrible, and some didn’t work at all. If you enjoy fighting an opponent and trying to cross a busy street and dodging traffic type puzzles, then you might like this game. However, the beginning of the game seemed to go quickly from one puzzle to the next with no momentum. The HOP scenes were more of the same but why put a flower bed scene in a game when we are trying to find a werewolf?
Graphics are a strong point with this developer and they are as good as always but a bit dark for my taste. I always love playing a game and looking at all the details in every scene when I play which is one reason I am a slow gamer but in London Howling, even though the graphics were crisp and clear, I really didn’t want to take my time and look at the slightly changed rehashed graphics from other games in the series.
Honestly, it is not often that I don’t recommend a game but I have to at least say “try the demo before you buy”. Even though I dislike the game you might see something I didn’t and it might be just the game for you. Happy gaming!
Okay, I know many will not see this game the same way I do but I have a very soft spot for 4Friends Games. I love this developer and over the years I have found all of their games to be long, with great entertainment value, excellent storylines that are well told and, of excellent quality. For me the game was an instant purchase sight unseen as in my book, this developer brings me exactly what I want in a game. Immortal Love Kiss of the Night did not disappoint and this is why I love 4Friends.
Welcome a bit early to a kick-off of the Halloween onslaught of scary and ghoulish games. This first game is a vampire love story of sorts and, IMHO, a very well-crafted game. I don’t generally care for vampire storylines but there are some of them here at BFG with one of my favorite being a TM game – Incredible Dracula. But before I get off-track this review is about today’s game Immortal Love Kiss of the Night which is the fifth game in this terrific series and although not my favorite, it is still excellent. I am not going to provide all of the detail of the game in my review as I believe it is more fun for you to discover those for yourself but I will let you know what I liked and what I didn’t.
Travis Montgomery and his new bride Valerie have both succumbed to a strange illness that is sweeping through their town and to save Valerie, Travis accepts a cure from a strange man who tells him that the cure can be dangerous. Willing to do anything to save his love from death, Travis takes the cure! When he gives the potion to Valerie, she takes only a part of it and returns it to Travis telling him that they should share it so that they both have a chance to survive. As we fast forward, we find that neither Valerie nor Travis survived and we next see them in the family crypt as Travis awakens to find himself in the family crypt. Worse the waking up after being presumed dead, he sees Valerie being led from the crypt by the same man who provided the potion. As he tries to escape his coffin someone tries to kill him but he manages to evade the attempt. Later as Travis leaves his coffin he begins to learn that all is not as it seems and he is now what is known as a vampire. Will Travis be able to save Valerie? Play this wonderful new Immortal Love game to find out what it takes for a man in love to save his bride from the grip of a powerful vampire.
The HOPS were fairly standard but they were well-designed and fun to play. Even though some of the scenes might be repeated who cares? I still found the second trip into a HOP as much fun as the first. The HOPS still had some variety in style and a bit of interactivity within the scenes. The HOPS were not as interactive as they could have been but they were still fun.
If there was any downfall in the game for me it was with the Puzzles. I hate the style of Puzzle where clicking on one tile changes another and there didn’t seem to be a pattern to the clicking in this game. I hated some of the puzzles and actually skipped them. When I am in a more patient mood, I might replay the puzzles and see if I can slog through those that gave me the most trouble. Aside from those frustrating “tile change” puzzles there are some others that are very good and even a few that are challenging.
Holey Moley, if you love finding collectibles and morphing objects you need to buy the CE version of this game as it is loaded with them. Not only do most of the scenes have two figurines to collect and two morphing objects to find, some scenes have three each and some even have four. It is so much fun and even challenge to see if you can find all of each. Trust me, some are very difficult to find and I had to cheat and use the strategy guide to locate a few after I struggled to find them. The remainder of the CE package is standard with wallpapers, screensavers, music, Strategy Guide, and a Bonus Chapter. What I appreciate most is that we can replay some of the puzzles and HOPS in the Extras Section of the game.
What I enjoyed most about the game is spotting the collectibles and finding the morphing objects. I did enjoy the twist on the vampire storyline and the excellent and beautiful graphics. The music was the same as in all of the other Immortal Love games so that was nothing new but it is after all the signature for the series. Although for those who love to race through a game, this might seem short but for me it is a very long game as I am a gawker and need to enjoy every little detail in each scene. I didn’t get into the bonus chapter but I loved the main game that has five chapters instead of the paltry three that we seem to find in most games now. I found it entertaining and for me a lot of fun and great gameplay. IMHO this is a game that is worth the full price and if more developers would give us this type of quality maybe some gamers would not wait for a sale to purchase the games. I know that when I see 4Friends on a game label that it is one I must have and one that I will truly enjoy. Although this game was perfect for me, please try the demo to see if it is one you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
On your way to enjoy a well-deserved vacation you run smack dab into the middle of another archeological catastrophe. This time a titan has been released upon the world to wreak havoc with the ancient Greek Gods and may just destroy the world in the process. Can you put a stop to Demos and save the world?
The graphics are just so-so and I have come to expect more than rather cartoonish characters in my games. The voice-overs are passable but just barely. I think that today we are asking for a bit more realism in our game characters and some developers can do it so well. I for one would rather have no voiceovers in a game than some that are so out of character that it is ludicrous. There is a unique tool, the Amulet of Time, which allows us to travel between times. The only other tool of importance is the interactive transporter type map but I could not find a journal so I guess it’s not needed. There is a task icon included on the side of the inventory box that keeps track of your current goal.
There are various types of interactive HOPs, most of which are the standard list type with a bit of interaction. The HOP in the fruit stand has been changed since the beta and I was rather disappointed with the replacement game. IMHO it’s too bad that the developer changed it from a fun puzzle to a bland silhouette scene. There are a couple of interesting puzzles early in the game but most are only okay and rather predictable.
In the end, this second offering in the Revived Legends series should have stayed buried. This is just my opinion but I would like to see developers stop chewing up memory, disk space, and download time with the inclusion of so many worthless cut scenes. IMHO, these cut scenes often add very little to the game and take away from the great gameplay that once was the basis of HOPA games. Maybe sometimes less is more! I don’t need glitzy cinematics when I play a game; I want great HO scenes and intriguing puzzles, with a good story and lots of adventure. Please developers return to the basics by adding substance to your games rather than useless cut scenes. As always, I recommend that you at least try the demo to see if this is a game you will like. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

TINSEL, YOU MUST SAVE CHRISTMAS
PostedSeptember 10, 2018

fromGosh, I sure hope there is a warm and fuzzy ending to this Christmas tale.
You have to hurry, Tinsel because Santa needs your help! Yes, he has called on you for a very special job and it is important. You must find the packages for Jack Frost and deliver them to Santa’s sleigh because without Jack’s help there will be no snow or Christmas spirit. Oh no, that would be dreadful for the children who look forward to Christmas and this wonderful time of year. With the help of your friends will you be able to save Santa and Christmas?
The graphics are absolutely gorgeous and full of the magic of Christmas. It looks like this developer has found its niche for graphics because they have done a stellar job with this game. For those of you who enjoy the Custom mode of gameplay there is one included. Your tools include an interactive map, a magic star, and a cast of adorable friends to help you save Christmas.
The HOPs varied in style and some had minimal interaction required to complete the scenes. No matter which style of HOP you enjoy there will be something to keep you entertained. The puzzles were not difficult and many were just too easy but hey, if you want to play the game with the family, the puzzles are perfect.
If you would rather try the CE version of games, it includes 40 morphing puzzle pieces that will be used later to complete puzzles, also there are 10 collectible statues to be found, and, of course, achievements to be earned. The other extra content includes, a Developer’s diary, Wallpapers, Concept art, Music, a Match-3 puzzle, the Bonus Game and a Strategy Guide.
Yuletide Legends the Brothers Claus is definitely a game for this time of year being geared to the young and young at heart. What a wonderful game for the entire family to play during the holidays! There is a good storyline and with some good HOPs and puzzles it is sure to provide a few hours of entertainment. I love Christmas with all of the sparkling lights and decorated trees that are captured so well in this beautiful game. If you love Christmas, then Yuletide Legends the Brothers Claus is sure to become one of those classic games that you will play every year. Please try the demo to see if this is a game that you will want to add to your Christmas collection. Happy gaming!
Autumn in France is only a so-so and rather boring Match 3 game. What I found most annoying is the music and then the fact that you can’t turn off a tutorial screen at the beginning of each level. There are so many other Match 3 games that are far more fun and even more challenging than Autumn in France. I am sure that many will enjoy this game but for me it simply wasn’t what I like to find in a Match 3 type game. As always please try the demo. Happy gaming!
In a trip to the cinema and a retrospective look at “B” rated horror film genre from past years, Domini brings us the tenth game in the Mystery Tales series – The Reel Horror. Detective, meet Sebastian Fleming a director obsessed with creating a true horror film but one who is having trouble pulling the essence of fear from his actors. Never fulfilling his dream of creating the perfect horror film before his death, Sebastian’s ghost is now haunting the old theater where his films were shown. Your services have been requested by Police Investigator Harold Jefferson whose sister Maya disappeared while completing an architectural survey of the old theater. The theater was thoroughly searched with no sight of Maya and her team to be found. During the search Harold thought he could hear Maya calling him and he even saw a few ghosts but his colleagues laughed it off so Inspector Jefferson knew you were the right person to call for help. Will you be able to help Harold find his sister before it is too late?
Although I love the gameplay, length and extras found in Domini games, I am so tired of their fantasy color palette that saturates their games in unrealistic deep purples, blues and pinks. I was hopeful that this game would be different but unfortunately, various tones and shades of purple still drench most scenes. However, in spite of my dislike of the color palette, The Reel Horror is excellent and well-worth playing. If more developers would provide the quality gameplay, HOPs, puzzles, and the LENGTH that Domini provides in their games I am sure more gamers would be willing to pay full price for games from these other devs – just saying – hint, hint! I know I sound like a broken record but HOPA games are so much shorter now and the CEs have so few extras that it should be no surprise that most gamers will wait until there is a sale to purchase them.
Since I am sure others will provide all the nitty, gritty details of the game and because I believe that discovery is much more fun, I will only tell you what I like, now that you know what I don’t like about the game. Even though scary films and games have never been my thing I was taken in by the satirical look at the horror film genre of this game. There are many humorous moments and witty dialog to be found as we meet Sebastian and his victims as we play through the game.
The HOPs are well-crafted and very interactive with most of them having some mini-games included as we search the scenes. There is one HOP scene that I actually thought was a puzzle until the light blinked on for me. Although I love the list type HOPs the most there is variety included with some silhouette and storybook types as well. If you don’t want to search for items, you can always switch to the match 3 option instead. The Puzzles in the game are terrific and Domini provides the ability to choose either Easy, or Hard for most games. If you select the Custom Setting at the beginning of the game, there is an option included there for Easy or Hard puzzles. If you find the Hard setting a bit too difficult with the puzzles you can reset them and then select the Easy setting before trying again.
If you happen to prefer the CE version of a game The Reel Horror is full of extras that most developers no longer provide. I am not going to describe what can be found in the extras since discovery is more fun. IMHO, this is a terrific CE value particularly given today’s sale.
Mystery Tales The Reel Horror surprised me because I loved playing the game. I’m still not finished but have no doubt that the Bonus Chapter will be as good as the main story. IMHO, this is one of the best and most enjoyable games I have played this year. I’ve enjoyed the HOPS as well as the Puzzles and hate to admit that I have had very little sleep as I stayed up most of the night playing the game. Even though I find this and excellent and entertaining game, as always, please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
Mystery Trackers Darkwater Bay is the fifteenth game in the MT series. Once again you play a detective with the Mystery Trackers organization and this time you might have been given the case of a lifetime. Dr. Russell Jackman who is a renowned scientist has disappeared while working on his research vessel the Poseidon. No one has heard from him and it is feared that he might be in trouble. As you and your trusty companion Elf arrive on the Poseidon, it looks like there was some sort of disturbance and Dr. Jackman is nowhere to be found. By following the clues left by Dr. Jackman you are soon off on an adventure that will turn into a very dangerous mission. Travel to the depths of the ocean as you search for the missing scientist and confront members of the Dark Trackers organization in a rush to control a very ancient and dangerous artifact.
The graphics are amazing and some of the best I’ve seen in recent games. If there is any drawback it is Dr. Jackman’s accent and voice acting that could have been a lot more natural and less contrived. Since it is not a constant part of the game I didn’t find it too annoying. Even though your companion Elf has traveled with you in this game, he seems to be very silent and not an integral part of the find and fetch crew.
The HOP scenes are fairly standard and what we expect to find in games from this developer, but they have been stepped up and seem more interactive. Even though I really enjoyed the HOPS, as I didn’t have to search for really tiny and almost invisible items, what is excellent in Darkwater Bay is the variety and difficulty of the puzzles. There are some new puzzles that I really enjoyed and one of my favorite puzzles is found early in the game when we need to open a wall cache to find some needed items. Although it is not a difficult it took some time to solve.
The CE version of the game includes morphing objects, collectible items and puzzle pieces to find. There are the usual achievements to earn and a smattering of other extras including the Secret Room that will open once you complete the game. As with all CE games there is the Strategy Guide and a Bonus Chapter. Since most gamers are no longer willing to pay full price for a game, the CE content seems to be shrinking along with the number of chapters in each game.
Some gamers might find the game short since it only includes three chapters but it still has taken me quite a bit of time and I am still not finished playing. I love this game and find the gameplay has kept me quite busy. I am not a fast player who loves to rush through a game to see how fast I can complete it, but rather one who loves to look at every scene and enjoy the graphics and each little detail. This seems to be one of the best games in the MT series since those earlier ones in Raincliff. I played the beta for the game and have been anxiously awaiting the full game release and it doesn’t disappoint. Elephant Games nailed this one and has provided a great mystery game with a lot of action to keep me involved right through the end. Unfortunately I had to quit playing in the wee hours to get some sleep last night but I am right back at playing the rest of the game as soon as I post this review. As always please try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
This will be a short review, at least for me, but even though it is a bit late I have to jump in and give my two cents. I absolutely love this game and have spent hours playing,
Pixel Art reminds me of when I was a kid and we didn't have a telly to keep us busy as we were living on a small island in the Pacific. My brother and I spent our time working on various projects, some of which included paint by number art to keep us occupied. We would happily sit at the dining room table in the evenings and create or art to give as gifts to our grandparents at Christmas. Yes, Pixel Art is a bit more sophisticated, and not quite as messy, but it is still very entertaining. I have spent hours working my way through the various levels. My favorite ones are the complex graphics that take quite some time to complete.
If you are looking for a great family game or one to play simply when you have some time to take a break during the day then Pixel Art is one that I highly recommend. As always, please try the demo. Happy Gaming!
