When I played the beta test for Moonsouls Echoes of the Past last year, I knew that this game would be something special. Of course I purchased the game immediately with no second thought or need to even try the demo. Since I was blown away by the game and because I want you to discover it for yourself, I am not going to sketch out the storyline for you. If you love a good Sci-Fi game that blends the best of both worlds, then you will want to see the story unfold as you play. At this point I want to let you know that the game might have a slow beginning but stick with it because when the demo ends things change and it is worth finding out what happens next. I actually had one of those “did that really happen” moments when the demo ended on a cliffhanger so you will want to see what happens next.
Everything about Moonsouls is exactly what I want in a game with gameplay and a storyline that held my attention, excellent HOPS and fun puzzles to solve. I think you should consider the CE release of the game particularly if you love finding collectibles and morphing objects. Yes, I know that many of you are tired of collecting the same Mad Head logo but I found many of them quite difficult to spot. In a departure from the norm for this developer, you will find morphing objects located throughout the game and not only in the HOP scenes.
The HOPS are very good although I did find a couple of them to be overly crowded with junk but even that didn’t change my mind about my enthusiasm for the game. After the demo there is a HOP scene that I consider to be one of the most creative I have ever seen and I loved it. Although the puzzles were good (and some were great) I did skip of few of them such as the one where I needed to avoid objects coming at me. I loved the puzzles that were more mental in type along with others that required moving objects through a maze.
The CE version of the game includes morphing objects and Mad Head’s favorite collectible logo to find located throughout the game. There are 23 achievements to earn as you play the game. Other extras include 12 Wallpapers, 17 Concept Art, 8 Music Tracks, and an HO gallery that allows you to replay 16 HOPS but there is no option included to replay the Puzzles which is a bit disappointing. There is a Bonus Chapter and a 39-page Strategy Guide.
In the end I loved this game and now I am going to look forward to another game in the Moonsouls series. In closing, my hope is that more developers will offer good Sci-Fi games and get us out of the evil demon rut that seems to have been hanging around at BFG way too long. Thank you Mad Head for creating such a wonderful game because for the first time in ages, I actually played the entire game while only stopping to stretch my limbs once in a while. As always, I recommend that you try the demo to see if you will enjoy Moonsouls Echoes of the Past as much as I did. Happy Gaming!
Another game, and yet another evil spirit attempting to take over the world. Demon Hunter 4: Riddles of Light is the latest game in the series and in this game you must rescue your Aunt Dawn from the clutches of the ancient Egyptian God Seth. Of course with the series name being Demon Hunters I would expect nothing less than some sort of evil demon as the subject of the game.
The game is really a mixed bag as far as graphics with some being exceptionally good and others being downright poor in quality. I didn’t care for the artistic style of the game that uses live characters along with their computer generated depictions. The voiceovers are not always lip-synced and I hate seeing a character stand and stare with no lip movement when they are speaking. At least in the demo version of the game, the Strategy Guide must be accessed by selecting the menu button. Since I haven’t purchased the game I am not sure if that will change in the full version of the game. I personally do not think the game is worth the full CE price so will wait until there is a great sale before purchasing the game. I also dislike the fact that unless I purchase the game I am unable to access the collectibles in the guide.
The developer did make an effort with the HOPS by making them interactive and a bit creative but with the grainy quality of the scenes the items are difficult to find. I dislike it when a developer uses brighter rays of light in one area of a scene and that makes items difficult to spot as well. Thankfully there is a matching game that can be played if you don’t want to search for items in the HOP. I did not understand exactly what I was supposed to do to solve several of the puzzles. I would prefer having more clear-cut instructions. One puzzle early in the game has a code to use and it took me a minute or two before I realized what I should do. Your tools include an interactive map and the Gauntlet of Horus.
The CE version of the game includes Morphing Objects in the HOPS, Collectible Stars and Diamonds, Achievements to earn, Wallpapers, Concept Art, Bonus Chapter, and Strategy Guide. The developer has also provided the ability to replay some HOPS and Puzzles.
Although the game does get more interesting as we approach the end of the demo, my disappointment with the graphics and the HOPS make it unlikely that I will purchase the game. Even though I am not over-the-moon thrilled by the game, it might be a perfect game for you. Please try the demo to see what you think. Happy gaming!
Initially, I can say that I fairly much echoed the sentiments of another reviewer who said the game left him/her feeling rather lukewarm but that feeling eventually changed. When I began the game beta last year and the opening cutscene showed a dark mage or demon saying that it needed more souls to obtain immortality I quit the game. This morning something, maybe boredom, prompted me to play the game demo and as I played further into the game (putting aside my dislike of the theme) it became more interesting. Being the sucker that I am for acquiring a CE for the SE price, I went ahead and purchased the full game. I must admit that although I dislike the theme of yet another demon who wants to obtain immortality, I do enjoy most fantasy games.
I am not going to recap the storyline as another reviewer did that already but I will say as mentioned above that the game grew on me the more I played it. The graphics are much better than I thought they would be and the voiceovers are well done. I did have some minor issues with the game’s controls that I learned to live with as I moved forward. The custom game mode does not offer a lot of choices and I would prefer that the difference in sparkles or glints is more defined. Although there is no pet helper that you cart around in your inventory, you will pick up companions who will help you as you move through the game.
Most of the HOPS are very good with many being the standard list type although there is some variety in the mix. The HOPS are what have come to expect in most games but they were still entertaining. Yes, most of the puzzles early in the game are a bit easy, but they present more challenge later in the game. A puzzle that I particularly enjoyed is a slider type where the goal is to move a red block through a circular maze by moving other blockers.
Darkheart Flight of the Harpies is not a top tier game but it is a game that will appeal many gamers, particularly if you enjoy fantasy games. As always, I recommend you at least try the demo to see if it is a game you might enjoy. Happy Gaming Fishies!
The Princess Returns is the fifth game in Royal Detective series and of course you play the game as the “Royal Detective”. You are surprised when you answer your door to find a small stone dog carrying a letter to you from your old friend Princess who asks for your help. Princess is now in the abandoned quarter of a town called Stone Peaks and she tells you that her little dog Sheriff will take you to her. Of course you immediately head off to Stone Peaks to meet Princess but when you arrive you find she is missing. Will you be able to find Princess and save her from a kidnapper whose desire is to steal her magical powers?
The graphics are excellent and even though sometimes they appear a bit cartoonish they are for the most part quite good. The voiceovers are very good even though the accents are not correct for the game setting. We do have Sheriff tag along with us throughout the game to fetch and perform other tasks as needed but I didn’t find him too objectionable but that being said, I would have preferred him to be a bit softer. I did happen to find some of his antics to be cute and because he is fairly silent I didn’t notice them right away.
When I tried the demo of The Princess Returns I wasn’t sure that I wanted to add this game to my collection but as I continued to play I became wrapped up in the game and couldn’t resist that “buy” button. The storyline is really nothing new but I loved the puzzles in the game. One of the first puzzles is a challenge and I think I must have spent a good twenty minutes solving it. That puzzle was one of the reasons I purchased the game. Some of the puzzles are nothing new but I haven’t seen them in quite some time so it was fun to refresh my solving skills. There is not too much to say about the HOPS except that I did find them well-designed and fairly creative with some variety in style. I enjoyed the list type HOPS since they are my favorite and I was happy to see that there are quite a few of those.
Since I have been playing the game off and on most of the day I can say that I have truly enjoyed it. The game isn’t the best one I’ve played recently but it is still very good. As I noted above, the puzzles have been the best part of the game for me. I think this will be a game that will have mixed reviews as we don’t all have the same taste in games. However, I do recommend that you try the demo and give the game a fair chance because it might surprise you. Happy Gaming!
This is the third game in the Enchanted Kingdom series and once again you play the game as the Tar Empire’s Honored Healer. Although I enjoyed the first two games Fog of Rivershire is even better than the others. I beta tested the game months ago and I have been waiting for its release since so there was no question that this game would be an instant purchase for me. My review is based on playing the full game. I don’t like to give too many details when writing a review but tend to rely on communicating my feelings about a game rather than providing too many details that might give away too much.
The Tar Empire is under attack by a terrible illness that turns those infected into monsters. Even the Medico Imperium healer assigned to the distant village of Rivershire could not withstand the effects of the disease and was locked up to prevent him from harming himself or others. Xander a warrior from the village has been stricken as well but he managed to arrive at the Medico Imperium to inform Dr. Klein of the situation and to enlist the aid of another healer. After seeing Xander, Dr. Klein believes that this is a demonic illness and because of your magic protection you are the only one capable healing the villagers and putting an end to the illness. Travel the perilous road to Rivershire and see what you can do to stop this horrible illness and to save the villagers and even the Tar Empire from the demon who is causing the disease.
The graphics are really so much brighter in this game and coupled with excellent voiceovers the game provides the complete entertainment package for me. I like the game mechanics and using my Healer Kit to diagnose the illnesses I encounter and then to mix the cures. Bravo Domini for such an excellent game. Domini is another of my favorite developers and it is rare that I don’t purchase a game they create. I think that having a 56-page Strategy Guide is a good indication that this will be a nice long game.
The game has an equal number of HOPS and Mini-Games. The HOPS are excellent and well-designed with a variety of styles. My favorite scenes are the list finds since I don’t care so much for the silhouette or storybook styles. For those of you who don’t want to find items in the HOP scene there is an alternate Match 3 game provided. The Mini-Games are excellent and in most of them we can choose either the easy or hard version when solving them. Some of the mini-games are a bit difficult and I found it a bit challenging to understand the objectives for a few of them. Although Domini does provide instructions for solving the mini-games they didn’t always make sense. This is when having the ability to replay the mini-games is a real benefit. Oftentimes I will go back and replay the mini-games in the extras section if I feel I didn’t do a great job of solving or skipped them the first time through. I also like to replay the ones that I really enjoy the most. Thank you Domini for including the replay in your extras for this game.
If you enjoy the CE versions of a game this one includes the following extras: Collectibles include 15 Eggs, 15 Medallions, and 76 Coins to find and 26 Achievements to earn. Other extras include 10 Wallpapers, 10 Concept Art, 5 Music Tracks, 17 HOPS and 17 Mini-Games to replay, a Magic Laboratory, Medico Imperium, a Bonus Chapter, and a 56-Page Strategy Guide.
I love this game! The Fog of Rivershire is so much better that the two previous games in the series and the scenes are so much more colorful and much lighter than in those games. The storyline is intriguing and is well-told. Even though there is an evil demon in the game I don’t find him as objectionable because the premise of the Enchanted Kingdom games is based on the struggles of the white magicians versus the dark magicians. In the first games we learned the history of the Tar Empire where all dark magic was defeated and banished from the kingdom and this game follows along that storyline. In spite of the bad guy it is an excellent game where I get to diagnose my patients and prescribe the healing medications they will need. Of course I must find the ingredients and then concoct the cures. I tend to love fantasy games and then Enchanted Kingdom games by Domini are terrific and very entertaining. I have no hesitation in giving this game 5-stars and would rate it higher if that was possible. As always I recommend that you try the game to see if it is one you will enjoy. Happy Gaming!!
The Forgotten Fairy Tales Canvases of Time is the second game in the series; the first game is The Spectra World. When that game was released I had such an adverse reaction that I gave the game only 1-star and wrote a less than complimentary review. The second game Canvases of Time is not much better than the first and I find it to be a very sloppy game. The use of live actors for the characters does nothing for the game and the voiceovers are very poor. That being said and because there was a sale today I decided to take the plunge and purchase the game so that I could write a review on more than only the demo.
I have played a few hours of the Canvases of Time and it simply doesn’t gain in appeal whatsoever. The game is yawn worthy and quite boring. I love Elefun, or at least I did in the “old” days before developers starting creating one after another of what I refer to as cookie-cutter games - not my term but one that another gamer used about three years ago and it is perfect to describe most of the games being funneled through BFG these days. Every once in a while we have a creative and excellent game but more often than not the games are simply not the same quality. I’ve written several reviews where I have given my ideas on why the games are now the way they are but it doesn’t really make any difference. The large gaming studios seem to recycle their graphics, characters, storylines, HOPS and Puzzles from one game to another - maybe they hope that we won't notice. Since Forgotten Fairy Tales is a new series there is not quite as much recycling but that fact does not increase the appeal of the game.
The HOPS seem to be mostly the storybook style and they are so easy it takes no thought to complete the scenes. The items to be found are mostly right in your face with no attempt to make them more challenging in any way. I didn’t find that many puzzles in the game or perhaps they were simply so easy I just moved right over them thinking they were part of the HOPS or regular gameplay.
The CE has the yada, yada, yada boring collectibles with nothing exceptional whatsoever so there is no need to really comment on them.
In the end The Forgotten Fairy Tales Canvases of Time is such a boring and unremarkable game that there is not much more to say. I love this developer or at least I did at one time but they are no longer the same nor do they create the masterpieces that they once did in series such as Fear for Sale. Nightmare Cinemas is still one of my favorite games so it is sad to see what is now being produced by Elefun. I did purchase the game with the hope that it would improve after the demo but that was a huge mistake. Even though I didn’t care for the game, you might want to try the demo because you might have a totally different reaction. Happy gaming!
Would you accept the gift of a TV set if one was offered to you? You receive a call from a colleague who has recently returned home and in the past month many of the town’s residents have mysteriously died. The only common link in all of the cases is that the victims were in front of their TV sets when they died. It looks like this case is right up your alley as an investigator of paranormal events, so you grab your trusty glasses and off you go to solve another mysterious case.
As far as the technical stuff for the game, I think that the actual game is better than the beta and it looks as if the developer fine-tuned and sharpened up the graphics somewhat in the full release. The game has all of the things that we are familiar with in this series and the most important being those old school winged glasses that will allow you to see past events and pick up certain tools that are not otherwise available.
HOP scenes are a mixed bag as far as variety and are basically okay but nothing too different. The mini-games are very easy but what I appreciate most is that they come with the ability to choose an easy or hard setting so that you can select the difficulty that most suits your gaming needs.
I can’t really give a comprehensive review of this game since I didn’t get too far into it. One reason is that the game was boring and a yawn fest that couldn’t hold my attention but more importantly for me was that when I hit the scene in the police station where the officer is in front of the TV and is saying “my soul is yours master” to some dark entity that was the end for me. Although the game might have been excellent if I could have moved past that scene, the bigger issue for me is that I am so sick of games where an evil being is trying to take over the souls of gamers. I hate this trend in games and I was hopeful that it was coming to an end. I personally will no longer purchase games with this theme and I know that developers can come up with good mysteries or other themes. As evidenced by some excellent games we have had this year, it is possible to have a game without the evil darkness and those are the games I will buy from now on. If this sort of thing doesn’t bother you, I am sure you will find that this game might be perfect for you. For me it is a no buy as I won’t be giving my money to developers who create a game with this type of theme.
There has been an attack at the local police station and Detective Duncan has called on you for assistance because of your renown in solving supernatural crimes. When you arrive at the scene everything is in shambles and several officers reported that the attacker had superhuman strength and speed, so Duncan thinks that you might be the right person to solve this case.
I enjoy the graphics from Mariaglorum, and many of my favorite games come from their development team. In the Black Dagger the graphics are realistic and colorful so I am happy. The voiceovers and sound package in general are excellent as well and suit the game perfectly. Another think I enjoy in this game is the true custom setting where I can make my hint and skip times as low or as high as I want. I happen to be a bit impatient so being able to set a very low time suits me perfectly.
There are some absolutely terrific HOPS early in the game at least and I think my favorite is one that has several mini puzzles included. The HOPS are very creative and it looks like all of them are interactive including the list style. The regular Puzzles are excellent, although some might think they are easy. Even though the puzzles might seem easy there were some that I found challenging. I do enjoy puzzles but sometimes I don’t particularly care for the motion type where we must trace lines with our mouse or toggle this n’ that to open something or another. This game doesn’t seem to have too many of that type of puzzle – thankfully, at least in the game’s demo.
The CE version of the game includes 8 Character Statuettes and 23 Crowns to find. There are also the ever present achievements to earn. The other extras are 18 Wallpapers, 30 Concept Art, Music, 8 Videos, a Bonus Chapter and a 40-page Strategy Guide. The downfall in the CE is that it doesn’t look like there are morphing objects nor can we replay the HOPS or Puzzles.
Although the game has an evil entity I love the modern day mystery concept so it isn’t quite as bad. I have said before that I definitely would like to get away from the evil being theme that seems to permeate the game world but I wonder if that will ever happen. Lately we have had a few games that are strictly crime solving games and I have found them quite refreshing. Why can’t we have great mysteries like the old Agatha Christy games instead of some dark entity seeking to wreak havoc on some unsuspecting souls? That being said I love this game in spite of the ancient evil character mostly because of the gameplay and the interesting storyline. Having very creative HOPS and then Puzzles increase my enjoyment as I follow the mystery behind the Black Dagger. Mariaglorum creates some awesome games such as the League of Light series and Bonfire Stories that I highly recommend. After playing the beta for the game some months ago I have been eagerly awaiting the full release of the CE. Even though I purchased the game as soon as it was released, I always recommend that you try the demo to see if this is a game you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
The Dark Parables series returns with game number fourteen in the series with the first seven games developed by Blue Tea Games after which the subsequent games were all developed by Eipix. Call me old school but Return of the Salt Princess is everything that I loved about the original games that had gorgeous graphics, beautiful FROG (fragmented object game) scenes, and excellent puzzles.
You once again take on the role of the fairy tale detective and this time you are out to find the missing princess of the Grak Kingdom. I’m not going to bother with the storyline synopsis since others do it quite well and with far more humor than I, suffice it to say that you are in for a great time as you track down the princess and find your way around the old kingdom.
I’m quite surprised by this game because it emulates the earlier games so well that I am not really sure if the game is a work shared by the two developers (Blue Tea and Eipix) or if maybe Blue Tea has taken up the reins once again. Perhaps it is all Eipix and they followed the original formula, but whatever the case may be, I love the result. The game is authentic right down to the map that no longer seems to be a jump map (at least it doesn’t work on my computer) which is the one complaint I had with the original games and now with this one. The game also reverts to the old style of offering only three modes of gameplay – Easy, Normal, and Hard with no other options such as turning off the tutorial. All minor for me since I’ve got what I like the most with the great graphics, FROGS, and puzzles.
The CE version of the game includes the following extras: 20 Cursed Objects, 20 Parable Pieces, 58 Pop-up Notes, and 24 Special Items to find as you play the game. Other extras include 26 Achievements, 12 Wallpapers, 24 Concept Artwork, 5 Music Tracks, 6 Movies, 9 Puzzles to play, Bonus Game Moonlight Romance, and the 57-page Strategy Guide.
I love this game mostly because it is so much like the original games in the series. Although I think the gorgeous artwork and the FROGS are terrific I do miss the special touches that EIPIX added with their technical expertise. I find it more difficult to navigate the game and miss having a jump map as well as the option to select a custom mode of gameplay. That being said, this game is perfect in every other way and it brings back the beauty of the Dark Parables games. I purchased the game as soon as it was available but as always, please try the demo to see if Return of the Salt Princes is a game you will enjoy. Following is a list of other games in the series. Happy Gaming!
Curse of Briar Rose Mar 2010 (Blue Tea Games) The Exiled Prince Feb 2011 Rise of the Snow Queen Dec 2011 The Red Riding Hood Sisters Sep 2012 The Final Cinderella May 2013 Jack and the Sky Kingdom Feb 2014 Ballad of Rapunzel Jun 2014
The Little Mermaid and the Purple Tide Nov 2014 (first game from EIPIX) Queen of Sands May 2015 Goldilocks and the Fallen Star Nov 2015 The Swan Princess and The Dire Tree Jul 2016 The Thief and the Tinderbox Sep 2016 Requiem for the Forgotten Shadow Feb 2017
In another Hidden Expedition game you are back as an agent of the HELP organization. Your holiday in Switzerland has been interrupted as you have been called upon by the agency to find a very special long-lost artifact that will point to the very origins of HELP. Start your journey at a Geneva auction house as you win the artifact only to have it wrenched from your hands. Now you are off on a globetrotting adventure as you seek to recover the treasure.
After the disastrous EIPIX game earlier this week I had my doubts about even trying the demo for The Golden Secret but in the end it seems like all is not lost and this developer still has what it takes to present an excellent game. This is one of the most exciting HE games to be released in recent years and it is so much better than the last one, even though I did enjoy HE The Curse of Mithridates and can recommend that game as well.
Although the HOPS and Puzzles are typical EIPIX I felt they were much better than those in some recent games. I happen to enjoy most of the HOPS from this developer even those where we must find items in the storybook type scenes. Some of the puzzles seemed to be a notch up from the last game and some even have a higher level of challenge.
If you prefer the CE version of a game this one includes 14 HOPS, 17 Puzzles, 36 Fact Cards to find, as well as Morphing Objects, and Achievements to earn. The other extras include 9 Character Art, 8 Pictures or Wallpapers, 9 Videos, Music, a Souvenir Room, Bonus Chapter, and the Strategy Guide.
In the end this game is so much fun and as I noted earlier one of the best HE games in recent years. I thoroughly enjoyed the game after the seemingly slow start at the auction house. Fortunately, the game picks up speed and my interest level rose with the action. It is good to see that EIPIX still has what it takes to create an interesting and enjoyable game. I purchased the game halfway through the demo and I am so happy to add the Golden Secret to my collection. There has only been one other game since the year began that I found really worthwhile and hopefully the trend will continue with CE games bringing a bit more to the table. Even though I find this a fun and entertaining game, please try the demo to see if this is one you will enjoy. Happy gaming!
