Game three of the Midnight Calling series is here and it is such a good game! In another wintry delight this time our heroine Valeria is off to save her world from an icy blast that is sure to destroy everything in its path. It seems like someone has cast a spell that has gone awry and now Valeria must travel back in time to prevent the error from ever happening.
The graphics are beautiful and, yes, icy but perfect for a cold and rainy day here in California. All, or at least most, developers are now offering a custom mode of gameplay and this one will allow you to set your hint and skip times to your preference.
Since we had a lovely stormy morning with power outages, I am a bit late in getting my review done so I will leave it to others to give you all of the details.
The HOPS are a lot of fun and there is the usual variety but I still prefer the list type. I love the way the mammoth team creates their HOP scenes and the ones in Valeria are gorgeous.
For some the puzzles might seem very easy but I am guessing that most gamers enjoy puzzles that are not “rip your hair out” difficult. I like to think a bit about what I am doing and once in a while do appreciate some challenge that might be over the top but for the most part, I enjoy puzzles that do not detract from gameplay or the storyline.
Yes, the game will be a buy for me. I have enjoyed the other stories in the series but this one seems a bit better. I am not sure that I am playing the same game as another reviewer because I didn’t find the baby griffin annoying at all and certainly didn’t notice it flapping its wings and screeching throughout the game. Yes, it did make a bit of noise but I found it rather endearing. I don’t want animal helpers in every game but once every so often is fine with me. I would rather almost have a pet helper than an amulet that I must play some insanely stupid mini-game to charge before each use. All in all, I find Midnight Calling Valeria to be an excellent game and a must-have addition to my gaming library. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

Our parapsychologist friend Brenda Gale is back in game five of the Spirits of Revenge series to put to rest yet another vengeful spirit. This time her travels take her to the Wilford School where she must soothe the ruffled feathers of a misunderstood ghost who before her demise was a student at the school. Ashley Stone the school’s principal called you after two of her students were injured. As you piece together the events, you realize that it was no ordinary accident that caused the serious injury to Ellie who is being rushed to the hospital when you arrive on the scene.
Although the graphics are crisp and clear they are not consistent so I am not sure what is going on here. I think that parts of the game were parceled out to different artist that, IMHO, makes a game style seem fractured somehow. In the custom mode the hints and skips can be set in a range of 15 – 255 seconds. Your tools include an integrated transporter map.
The HOPS are part of what make this game so much fun for me. Yes, I did buy the game because I have enjoyed most of the others in the series. I wasn’t as fond of Florry’s Well but all in all it wasn’t a horrible game. The HOPS include the variety that is somehow written into the must have manual that BFG gives its game developers. All in all there is nothing new here but there is still a lot of enjoyment.
The puzzles although easy include some of my favorites. I know, there is a big “bang on the drum” move from some who just want really challenging puzzles BUT I play a game for enjoyment and not to be frustrated by spinning wheels a hundred different directions in order to solve a puzzle. Puzzles simply add to the mix that makes HOPA games; so whether puzzles are difficult or easy, I still enjoy them and love that they are part of the experience. Others have provided the detail of what you can expect with the HOPs and puzzles so I won’t bother to give you that information and, even though many of you appreciate that detail that has been provided, quite frankly, I would rather discover all these things for myself.
The CE is what I consider CE light even though it does have collectibles and morphing objects, most of which are “in your face” and you would need to be blind to miss them. The other extras in the game follow the guidelines so there is nothing new here and definitely less than you will find in some CE games.
Okay, so why did I buy the game? For one thing I like the storyline and the HOPS. I find the mini-games or puzzles to be fun AND I like the way the game flows. For me, this is a fresh and relaxing game even though it is nothing new. Even though the strategy guide indicates this might be a short game, I tend to play slowly and savor each screen and step in the game; and since I have enjoyed most of the other games in the series, I am hopeful that this might be a longer game that expected. I like the game and only stopped to write my review and now I am going back to enjoy the rest of the story. As always, please try the demo to see if you will enjoy the game as well.
I recommend this game!

In this newest game in the Spirits of Mystery series “The Fifth Kingdom”, our old on again, off again friend, Isa returns with his evil magic in full force. You, Princess, are on your way to a meeting that could change your life. Once every twenty years, on the night of the full moon, the rulers of the four kingdoms gather to select their supreme leader who will unite the kingdoms and wear the “Crown of One.” As you rush off to meet your destiny you find it won’t be easy since there are dark challenges ahead that will test your resolve.
The storyline for the Fifth Kingdom is very interesting and at first there was a bit of confusion in my mind until I caught on to what was happening. As always, I don’t want to give too much away but I will only say that I was surprised and love the game. If you like twists and turns, you too will be surprised by the storyline just as I was.
As always the artistic and gorgeous graphics are top of the line. One of the things that I enjoy the most from this developer are the hand-drawn graphics that create beautiful, and not so beautiful, characters and bring them to life. The game offers a custom mode where you can set your hints and puzzle skips in a range of 5 – 90 seconds. Your tools include an interactive map and a magic mirror that you acquire early in the game. The game has 5 chapters, an extra chapter and then the bonus chapter. Some gamers expressed their concern over the file download size that indicated only around 450GB. In checking the game’s folder the game size is close to 1GB so don’t be concerned over the download size and think this might be a very short game.
The HOPS in the game are varied and some are better than others. I am fairly old school and do love the standard list type when exploring a HOP scene but If you like variety then you will find it in this game that has 22 hidden object scenes.
Although the puzzles are nothing new, I do love some of the types included in the 16 puzzles that are found in the game. Some are very easy, which is great for those of you who don’t enjoy puzzles in HOPA games. I always find some of the puzzles included in games from the Bunny team to be a bit challenging. All in all I have enjoyed those that I found as I played through the early part of the game.
If you prefer the CE version of a game you will find that the Bunny team has stepped up and included a ton of extras for your enjoyment. The extra frills include locating 20 collectible crowns, 10 portraits, and 8 cats that are found in various scenes in the game. You will also need to keep your eyes open to find the 22 moons hidden in the game that will be used to read your Moon Horoscope. There is a 50-page strategy guide, an extra chapter AND a bonus chapter. Throw in all the other extra goodies that include 14 videos,10 wallpapers, 10 concept art, 9 avatars, 6 screensavers, replay of 16 puzzles, 4 music, replay of 22 HOPS, and finally a “test.” Wow, this game has a HUGE amount of extra content that, IMHO, makes it well worth the full price.
I absolutely LOVE this game. It is no surprise to many that the Bunny team was at one time my favorite game developer. At least for me, this game has it all and is exactly what I am looking for when I play a game. There are a lot of wonderful games provided for us by BFG, and the Spirit of Mystery series is among my favorite. I originally hesitated to purchase the game but since I love the series, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the full version of the game. Once I opened it and found out how much the developer packed into the game, I knew it was not a mistake. Even though I love this game, please try the demo to see if you might enjoy it also. Happy gaming!
I recommend this game!

This is definitely going to be a very short review. Witches’ Legacy the City That Isn’t There is just dreadfully horrible or horribly dreadful and an indication that this pachyderm has lost its fun. In my review of the last game I said that this series should have died and now I can only echo those words. I know that many are still devoted fans of the series just as I once was long ago. Well maybe not that long ago but my interest waned long before this new storyline and set of characters was introduced. Thankfully there are some game developers who realize when a series is dead and they can no longer hold on to the crumbling bones.
If you still enjoy the series or perhaps new to the genre of HOPA games you may enjoy the game. Those who have played and loved most of the Witches’ Legacy games might agree that the series has certainly reached a point where it no longer holds any appeal.
Yes, there are some excellent HOPS but most of the puzzles are mediocre at best. I will leave it to others to provide all of the details of the game and must salute them for their patience to muddle through the demo.
Sadly, I found the game so boring that it was a struggle to last more than thirty minutes before I pulled the plug, which is exactly what I would love to see this developer finally do to the series. Enough said!!
I don't recommend this game.

“Every miracle has a price,” and with those words this game of choices and lessons about the cost of those choices begins. What would you do for true love and to heal those you love?
You play the game as Louise who shares an antiques business with your father Greg. As the story begins you, and dad are traveling around Central Germany in search of items to sell back home but while you are there you will also visit with Conrad, an old family friend. It is a stormy night as you approach the tavern where Conrad is staying and the horses are spooked by the storm, and your wagon plunges over the mountain side. When you and dad didn’t arrive at the inn as expected Conrad came looking for you, and it is a good thing he did. After you catch your breath from the traumatic fall, you notice that something seems unusual about Conrad’s hand but he tells you it is nothing, just an old injury. Although Conrad happens to be a handsome fellow, I think I might have been a bit concerned about that odd looking glove on his hand.
Custom mode allows you to set hint time from 10 – 180 seconds and skip time from 10 - 320 seconds. I always skip the tutorial, which is the main reason I prefer the custom mode of gameplay; well that, and also because I tend to be impatient and want the lowest hint time available. Your tools include a transporter type map that allows you to move quickly between locations and an amulet that is a bit different than some we find in other HOPA games.
Although at times the game seems a bit “sugary” and might not appeal to everyone, I happen to love it. The game is from a special group of friends who has given us some terrific HOPA games over the years that are generally well-designed games with good storylines and great gameplay. The HOPS are interactive with items that are not too difficult to find. The puzzles, even though a bit easy, are still fun to solve as I navigate the game.
If you enjoy the CE version of games this one includes portrait pieces to collect. The remaining extra content is the standard fare with achievements to earn, a bonus chapter, strategy guide, wallpapers, screensavers, artwork, music, and replay HOPs and puzzles. The CE package isn’t that great but it DOES have the in-game strategy guide that can provide a bit of extra help if needed. Most seasoned, long-time HOPA game lovers rarely use the strategy guide but it is still a great benefit at times.
Not everyone will enjoy this game and I am sure there will be the usual cry of “same old thing”, but I happen to love the game. Although the game is basically a love story, it is also a lesson in morals and values, making choices, and the consequences of the choices we make. Although I find Price of a Miracle to be an excellent game, please be sure to try the demo to see if it is a game you will enjoy as well.

A relaxing spa vacation – courtesy of your friend at MI6, agent David Redford – soon turns into anything but a restful time away from it all. Of course if it was a relaxing and trouble-free event, then we wouldn’t have this terrific new adventure on Easter Island that is getting 2017 off to a great start for HOPA lovers. No sooner do you hit the island than there is an eruption that opens a huge crater in the island trapping a team of archeologists. As you work to save the team you learn the secret of an order of Seekers who centuries ago fought a battle to save earth from the destruction of Atakhtar. In a moment of great sacrifice one of the seekers who came to save Earth, managed to imprison Atakhtar in a crystal that was buried deep within the volcano. Unfortunately, an accident released the vengeful God and now you must become a full-fledged seeker and travel to other worlds though the passage circles in order to save Earth. Travel through the passage circles and encounter some unique worlds and people to discover the crystal seeds to grow the fractal flowers that might well save your future.
This game has it all from crisp jewel-toned graphics that are absolutely gorgeous, to interesting interactive HOPS and lots of excellent puzzles. There is a lot to do in what I think is going to be another well-designed long game from this developer who is quickly moving to the top of my list of favorite game developers. When I see a game from this team, I know it will have terrific gameplay and an excellent storyline.
The HOPS are absolutely a delight with items that are well depicted. Many of the scenes have puzzles incorporated as well as some interactivity when it comes to finding many of the items. There are many different types of HOPS so there is something for everyone. Oh, and if you just don’t like HOPS, you can always switch to a match-3 game to help complete the scenes. If you read some of my reviews then you know I love puzzles and there are certainly a lot of them in Secrets of Easter Island. Not only are there a lot of puzzles but some are different and some are challenging. The puzzles add to the wow factor of the game – at least for me. There are puzzles in Secrets of Easter Island that I haven’t seen in a very long time, as well as maybe one that I don’t recall ever seeing before. Although there are some easy puzzles, almost all of the puzzles come with either an easy or hard setting. I don’t like to give too much detail about the specific HOPS or puzzles because it is far more fun to discover for yourself what a game holds in store for you.
If you prefer the CE version of games the Secrets of Easter Island has collectibles, artifacts and morphing objects to be found. If you can’t live without them, yes, there are also achievements to be earned. The remaining extras are always found in CEs such as a bonus game, strategy guide, etc.
As I mentioned above, Secrets of Easter Island is a great way to start off 2017 and it is a must-have game for me. Not only is the game full of things to do, it is also beautiful and just what I have been looking for after all the dreary, colorless games that wrapped up 2016. Why BFG would end the year, a time that should be festive, with such an array of awful games doesn’t make sense but at least they are making up for it with Labyrinths of the World Secrets of Easter Island. My reviews are based only on what I happen to enjoy in gaming and you might like something different so, as always, please try the demo to see if you might enjoy this amazing game.
I recommend this game!

EIPIX comes back with a bang and a knock-out punch or two in this terrific new Vermillion Watch game – Fleshbound, that I think might be even better than the first game in the series. It hasn’t been long since your uncle was killed and he passed along the mantle of being an agent for the elite Vermillion Watch to your young but capable hands. Yes, young Hawkes, you are now an agent for the Watch and must take on a new case almost immediately. With your capable friend and mentor, Phileas Fogg, working by your side you will meet a cast of interesting characters as you work to stop the mysterious Red Queen.
The graphics are excellent with good voiceovers but it is a bit odd that the lip-syncing seems to be a hit or miss sort of thing. There are four modes of gameplay including a custom mode. You have an interactive, transporter type map to help you move quickly between locales.
The HOPS are excellent and varied with some being different than those normally seen. Some are so cleverly inserted into the story that it takes a second to figure out that you are playing a HOP. I enjoyed one of the first scenes where you spot differences on playing cards, and then getting a drink in this tavern isn’t quite as simple as just handing over the money – lol. If you are into puzzles then Fleshbound is going to be a treat. If you are new to HOPA games and not sure about puzzles, then there is a skip button available. One of the nice things about the custom mode of gameplay is that you can set your hint and skip times as low as you like. I love puzzles in HOPA games and even though some puzzles are familiar there are still some surprises in difficulty. One puzzle in particular had me gritting my teeth until I finally solved it just as I was going to hit the skip button. Although most of the puzzles in the game are fairly easy to manage, there are still some that promise a delightful challenge for those of us who love the “P” in HOPA games.
The CE version of the game is rather light on extra content although there are morphing objects and some fairly “in your face” collectibles to find. I can do without achievements in a game but I am sure there are some gamers out there in BFG land who strive to earn them all. The remaining extras are the standard fluff but for new gamers the in-game strategy guide is always a benefit. Since there really isn’t a great sale today, many gamers might prefer waiting for the SE game to be released.
I Love this game and find it to be the perfect way to spend a rainy Saturday morning; in fact I had to pull myself away to finish my review. There are some different gameplay features with many puzzles that I find enjoyable to solve. I’m happy to see that one of my favorite game developer’s has hit the mark with Fleshbound and continues to think of new ways to keep us entertained. Fleshbound is a terrific way to wrap up the gaming year here at BFG and, hopefully, just a taste of what might lie ahead in 2017. Happy New Year to all of my BFG friends wherever you may be.
I recommend this game!

You have to hurry, Tinsel because Santa needs your help! Yes, he has called on you for a very special job and it is important. You must find the packages for Jack Frost and deliver them to Santa’s sleigh because without Jack’s help there will be no snow or Christmas spirit. Oh no, that would be dreadful for the children who look forward to Christmas and this wonderful time of year. With the help of your friends will you be able to save Santa and Christmas?
The graphics are absolutely gorgeous and full of the magic of Christmas. It looks like this developer has found its niche for graphics because they have done a stellar job with this game. For those of you who enjoy the Custom mode of gameplay there is one included. Your tools include an interactive map, a magic star, and a cast of adorable friends to help you save Christmas.

The HOPs varied in style and some had minimal interaction required to complete the scenes. No matter which style of HOP you enjoy there will be something to keep you entertained. The puzzles were not difficult and many were just too easy but hey, if you want to play the game with the family, the puzzles are perfect.
If you enjoy the CE version of games, this one includes 40 morphing puzzle pieces that will be used later to complete puzzles, also there are 10 collectible statues to be found, and, of course, achievements to be earned. The other extra content includes, a Developer’s diary, Wallpapers, Concept art, Music, a Match-3 puzzle, the Bonus Game and a Strategy Guide.

Yuletide Legends the Brothers Claus is definitely a game for this time of year and is geared to the young and young at heart. What a wonderful game for the entire family to play during the holidays! There is a good storyline and with some good HOPs and puzzles it is sure to provide a few hours of entertainment. I love Christmas with all of the sparkling lights and decorated trees that are captured so well in this beautiful game. If you love Christmas, then Yuletide Legends the Brothers Claus is sure to become one of those classic games that you will play every year. Please try the demo to see if this is a game that you will want to add to your Christmas collection.

Move over penguins, there is a new redhead in town and she brings a bag full of fun with her arrival in The Secret of Arcanesium: A Mosaic Mystery.
What a creative and awesome new griddler type game that goes a step beyond with an exceptionally well-told story and one that is loaded with variety. Not only do we solve the grids as we move through the game but we find objects, use them, or solve a puzzle each time we complete a grid. The interesting story line is updated as we progress in the game. The game page “blurb” indicates that there are more than 100 levels so there is a lot of fun to be had in this terrific little game. Over the past year, those of us who love griddler, nanogram, or mosaic type puzzles have had more options available and A Mosaic Mystery adds another terrific game to the mix.
Although there are no voiceovers in the game there is background music that accompanies the clicks that are heard when we finish a row. The graphics are nice and colorful but if there is any drawback to the game, it would have to be the dark backgrounds for each grid that often make it difficult to distinguish which cells are available to be filled. Even though there is an autofill feature that kicks in when all of the required cells in a row or column are completed, I always use the “x” when I know a group is completed so I can avoid mistakes.
Although there are no hidden object scenes we do pick up inventory items after completing some of the grids. The blurb states that the puzzles are challenging but early in the game those I encountered were very easy. With some of the grids having a bit more challenge than usual, it is okay with me that the puzzles are fairly easy. I really love the concept and the whole package that brings us a very creative new mosaic game. Thanks to the developer for a fun new game to play when we are looking for something different to fill those moments when we might only want a short break from our daily routine. I hit the buy button after completing about ten levels because I knew that A Mosaic Mystery is a keeper. As always, please try the demo to see if you will enjoy the game as well.

When the first Beyond game arrived at BFG I was so swept away by a wonderful sci-fi game (something I would love to see more often) that had excellent gameplay, puzzles and HOP scenes. Beyond Light Advent is such a great game that I have played it several times since its release in July 2015. Today my wait for a sequel is over and Star Descendent seems even better. Star Descendent is so excellent that it will probably be at the top of my list for best HOPA game this year.
Today is Thomas’ 11th birthday and among his presents is something special that is sure to change not only his life but that of his mother Sarah (you) as well. While you are busy taking care of a kitchen mishap, Thomas opens a present that soon has him on a voyage of discovery and danger. Follow Thomas on an incredible roller coaster ride that will take you on the adventure of a lifetime.
The graphics in the game are beautiful as another world and the universe come to life. I love everything about this game and the graphics and sound are just a part of what make it so terrific. I don’t want to tell you too much about what to expect because discovery is part of the fun in Star Descendent. Early in the game you find a cute mechanical friend who helps you on your journey but you will find others as you progress. You also have an interactive map that will help you navigate through the game. While you are moving through the experience you will learn some amazing things about your son but most importantly the journey reinforces the love and bond between you and your son.
The HOPs in the game are so well-designed and creative that they were fun to play – even the storybook style but there were far too many of those in the game to keep me happy. I don’t want to constantly look for misplaced items in the pages of a book. I guess I am a traditionalist and love the original style of HOPs where we find items from a list. I enjoy interactive HOPs but don’t think it is fun to move items to the correct place on a page. The puzzles are excellent and, again, very creative with some that seem different than those we normally see in HOPA games. I found most of the puzzles to be quite doable and, even though some seemed difficult for me, I think others might find them easy. I love puzzles in games and the ones in Beyond Star Descendent are, IMHO, terrific and fit well in with the storyline.
If you like the CE version of HOPA games this one includes 31 collectible rockets to find, 19 morphing objects, achievements to earn as you play the game, bonus chapter, strategy guide, wallpapers, character gallery, music, replay of HOPs and a puzzles.
As is sometimes the case and after giving the CE release a glowing review, I found the game a bit boring. It didn’t live up to my expectation and I eventually put the game on the shelf. I loved the first Beyond game but this one was not quite as good. In the end the game was full of portals that it was nothing different than any of the other games we see so often. Perhaps I am not as fond of this developer as I thought because they pretty much do the same thing over and over and over again. If you love storybook HOPS that became the rage with the Nevertales games, then this game might be one you will enjoy but as always, I recommend that you try the demo.
I recommend this game!
