The two major problems I have with this game are the lack of a map and the non-directional hints, which, along with the large number of possible locations, make a guessing game out of where you might need to go next.
The voiceovers and personalities of the characters are hysterical! The uncle has the proverbial tight sphincter; the gruff friar and prissy magician are for some unknown reason angry and belligerent.
I really enjoyed the spooky atmosphere, but I'm on the fence about this one. I might get it as a DOTD or COTW.
Except for the long wait while the skip button loaded, this was a very enjoyable game for me. The HOS are clearly drawn but not unchallenging. Some of the items were obvious; others took a little closer look to find. The map, while not interactive, is drawn in 3/4 view, so it made it easy to discern where there were things to do and how to get there. Because of that, I only needed to use the walkthrough once -- I had missed picking up a pair of gloves.
The story was compelling and kept my interest all the way through with lots of characters to interact with.
The ending confused me a bit when it said the rescued souls could "live again." Did that mean they needed to be picked up by the Coast Guard, or just that they could live in an afterlife or be reincarnated? I guess you can interpret it any way you want to.
I'm giving this four stars. With voiceover, and a short or immediate skip button, it could easily be five.
Really great creep factor and story line. The graphics are beautifully rendered and the mystery is challenging.
I've played it three times and enjoyed it each time, and I'm not one to replay games.
Most of the HOS are fairly dark and grainy, making it a bit difficult to find all the objects, but that's what hints are for, right? I appreciate that there is no click penalty, and the hints refill quickly. I skipped all the puzzles, so I can't comment on them, but the skip button is available quickly enough even for me.
Nothing here is new... treat a wound, make a bullet, mix some chemicals, unlock some locks... but somehow it all works together to make a pleasant, well-done game, and I do appreciate a straight-forward HOPA game without a lot of overdone bells and whistles, which can be confusing and annoying at times.
I played about 20 minutes of the demo and found it so easy and so boring that I can't even say it's a decent enough game if you just want to look for hidden objects and play a few puzzles to relax. It isn't worth a credit or the DOTD price. So bad it's laughable. No, I take that back. It isn't even good for a laugh.
*The very large and completely unnecessary new objective/ objective completed box popping up all the time. *The music was just awful. *Teeny tiny objects to pick up outside of the HOS. *Busy artwork. That's the only way I can explain it. *Too easy. There's nothing left for the player to figure out.
The story seemed to have potential, but the execution left a lot to be desired. I'm amazed that it has four stars at this point. It seems that people who don't like a game won't review it.
I have played some excellent games by this developer, but sadly this wasn't one of them. "Sadly" because the story and artwork were really, really good. I loved having live actors in the cut scenes. Even some of the HOS had live (or photos of live) animals or people. But I thought the game play was illogical, convoluted and entirely to much trekking back and forth. Normally, I don't like a hint system that tells you exactly what to do, but in this game I needed it and the transporter map as well, because the game is seriously all over the place.
The artwork, live actors and story almost make up for the game's defects, though. It's a good game but not a great one like I have come to expect from this developer. Three stars because I had to use the hint button to know what to do next entirely too much.
Not as much fun as I wanted it to be. Lots of running around with just one HOS after another. By the time I get an item I need, I have forgotten where it is supposed to go. For example, if I need to cut something open, the scissors might not be picked up until many HOS later and clear across to the other side of the house.
The HOS are absolute messes -- probably the worst I've ever encountered in any game I've played -- smudgy, shadowy hiding places for teeny-tiny little objects requiring you to click on exactly the right pixel.
This is a very long game. I've been playing for four hours, and I'm not anywhere close to the end, I've now given up trying to figure out where I need to be and am simply using hints to point the way. At this point, it feels more like work than fun, just slogging away to get to the end.
Lots of puzzles, lots of waiting for the skip button to fill.
I played the demo on casual, which I think is the medium level of difficulty. I would've played on the highest level, but then I'd have had to wait longer for the skip button to fill.
What I really disliked about the game were all the yellow pop ups in comic-book script, and what I would call hand-holding. ["Now I need to find a _______."]
I also hated when the professor and the archeologist spoke to each other in quote boxes. And they talked too much... I kept wanting to yell, "Be quiet!"
Then every time you found a piece of the king's treasure, you got a pop up for that, too. ["Hooray! You found a ________."]
If not for all that pop up aggravation, I might have liked the game.
Well, almost immediately I started to hate this game, and by the time I'd played 30 minutes of the demo, I was thoroughly irritated and bored.
1. I hate looking for silhouettes. 2. I didn't like the progressive HOS. 3. I especially didn't like looking for silhouettes in a progressive HOS. 4. The gimmick of having the dog look for things was... erm... a little bit cute, but irritating to have to notice if an item had a paw print or not. 5. I kept missing the hint button and clicking on the dog by mistake. 6. A brightly-colored, childish, puppet-boat game as a puzzle to open a lock?? Whaaa???? The gate is old and rickety, but the lock looks like a brand new, hand-drawn puppet show? Looks like it's drawn out of a children's coloring book. Stupid. 7. Finding the wave to go with the puppet show was another silhouetted HO.
Finding a game you like is a personal thing, so try it. If nothing else, Dupin is verrry easy on the eyes.
