Adapted from "Der Inquisitor", a novel by Wolfgang Hohlbein's, the famous and prolific german writer, father of Indiana Jones and the author of many other captivating works of literature, the game faithfully follows the original storyline.
Starting with a simple yet exhaustive -and lengthy- scripted intro admirably written and well translated, augmented with sketches hand-drawn by a talented artist, the game offers the promise of a compelling adventure.
Just a promise.....for nothing in it comes anywhere near the high standard of the novel.
Mediocrity reigns all throughout.
The adventure is reduced to its simplest expression. Actions come one at a time, require no metal effort, not even providing a minimum of excitement.
Exploring the few locales at will is out of the question due to the omnipresent linearity. All scenes are low quality photos, some of them not entirely unpleasant [the forest or the cabin], but most terribly dull and uninspiring.
But the worst is yet to come
The HO Scenes the slipshod kind and near impossible; some object are just blobs without any definite shape; others are utterly invisible. Most are irrelevant to the story like a juniper sprig [how on earth do they expect us to actually know what a juniper sprig looks like ??] well hidden in a tree of same color, or a thin white thread that's supposed to be a necklace stuck again a whitish wall, or even a fishing net in a place where there is nothing to fish ...uuuhhh !!!!
The sluggish hint system does help but takes time to re-up. And after 3 misclicks the cursor goes beserk for a few seconds, a feature I have always criticized because a game is supposed to provide fun, not frustration and irritation, by letting players click as much as they like if they want to, especially when there is only 1 Mode.
Now the minigames/puzzles: 7 "Find the differences" [between 10 and 18] ; 5 "lock puzzles" [always the same]; a "slider"; 2 "jigsaw", a couple of other things. Puzzles can neither be skipped nor exited.
7 uninteresting chapters, too many cutscenes, no challenge whatsoever, no wonder I quit after 24 mns of the demo.
My recommendation ? Buy the book.
I don't recommend this game.

Always on the lookout for criminal investigations -and any type of good game- I delved once more into BFG's treasure trove and met Penny and her cute little dog...who sleeps a lot.
It seems that this game has gone unnoticed; that's a pity because it is quite enjoyable, refreshing and makes a happy change from dark stories....save one skull in one HOS which has nothing to do there but is there nevertheless.
Will I ever find a game WITHOUT a flippin' skull ??? Anyway.....
Everything is simple in this game and even though the puzzles are easy classics they do provide a good amount of fun. The start is rather conventional and not particularly original or exciting. But things get better, more enthralling, more inventive and a bit more difficult as you progress through the game especially towards the end. Yes, I'll admit it, I took a quick sneak peek at the walkthrough. I often do that in order to get a maximum of information.
If you want a higher challenge, you can play the harder of the two available Modes.
The storyline is straightforward, the actions also, as once you have found the useful objects all you have to do is put them in circular boxes that pop up over their place of destination. The rest is automatic. This doesn't involve much thinking though, but it has the advantage of giving your brain cells a good rest.
One feature I appreciated was the fact that the use of these items is perfectly logical and natural.
Finding the useful objects is no problem; first the tasks are clearly stated and come one by one, second the cursor turns into a magnifier when hovering over the location of the item.
You cannot explore the various locales at will because of the linearity; each scene is given to you one after the other, but what you need do in each one is quite interesting.
HO Scenes come up there an then, in small numbers, as the emphasis is placed mainly on the adventure and the minigames [which, btw, can all be skipped]. The HOs are often hard to find but the little dog will give you hints in between two siestas.
There is no voice-over, but cutscenes and dialogs are kept to the strict minimum thereby providing information without being annoying.
I played the demo for 35 minutes which allowed me to complete the first chapter, then I exited because I decided to purchase this game and keep the surprise complete as regards the 8 subsequent chapters.
As for the graphics, they are all neat, mainly photos, with some animation; the kind I like.
Though not sophistated enough for a 5 star rating, this Mystery is good fun, relaxing, guarantees a few pleasant hours and is worth getting for a mere 7 bucks [jump on it if it is offered on the Daily Deal].
I recommend this game!

This one is a true curio in every respect. It could have been a good adventure had it been polished and several features been improved.
The first one is the awful amount of lengthy dialogs; you spent your time reading lines and lines in small letters down the bottom of the screen. You can't avoid them as you need to interact with the different characters in order to obtain information and items. Although they are all questions and replies full of humor, they often border on the absurd. Not only does their length become very tedious after a few minutes but the english translation is at times quite weird, not to say appalling. Example: an onion is called "onion dome"
Then nothing is really clear; you hang around with the characters and walk in circles around 5 or 6 locations without really getting anywhere. I played the demo for 28 mns and only got one item from a character, which I was supposed to use on a cat [and that didn't work] which was supposed to be chasing a mouse except that he wasn't chasing anything, merely sitting on the roof of the tavern licking his paws. And this is only one example.
Referring to the walthrough for a clue, I was flabbergasted not only by the way it has been translated but also by the little help it offers. I have played many adventures but I have never seen anything so confusing.
The game is an animated cartoon; several parts of it are quite funny and made me laugh but I will not go into details because that would spoil your fun if you decide to play the game.
It is clear this adventure has a true potential and is full of ideas; it is also clear, unfortunately, that this potential has not been properly exploited.
If the developers had replaced the scripts by spoken dialogs with local accents -and in good English, if they had made the gameplay more intuitive and implemented triggers that do work, the whole game would have gained in quality and fun.
Nonetheless, the demo is worth downloading just to have a good laugh for half an hour.
I don't recommend this game.

A simple blend of HOG and Adventure the originality of which lies in the double ending: the outcome is different depending on your final choice.
The rest is pretty standard with a Casual and an Expert Mode. The HO Scenes are a bit of a mess but strangely enough spotting the HOs is not overly difficult especially with the help of a few hints. The adventure side is straightforward and the locations are varied enough not to revisit 10 times the same one. The puzzles are classics, and harder on Expert Mode. Instructions and goals are both clear.
Graphicwise, the hand-drawn, nicely colored decor is quite pleasant to the eye and not as spooky as I had expected.
Obviously you do have a ghost since that's the basis of the story, but she is not frightening at all.
A long and interesting game which will keep you entertained for a few hours, worth considering a purchase especially on today's Daily Deal.
I recommend this game!

Gorgeous graphics, extremely detailed [especially the bedroom in the Castle, stunning !}, rather good soundtrack, medium hard HO Scenes [they are clear, lively colored, uncluttered, interactive], neat HOs though some are somewhat not easy to spot, Useful Items easy to find and use [hunting them is good fun] friendly Hints, plenty of side artifacts to find, good puzzles both classical and innovative offering a good challenge level without being too tricky [they can be skipped], numerous locales to explore but not an awful lot of backtracking, a level of difficulty that increases slightly as you go along, a permanent minigame I will let you discover [nothing out of this world, but good fun too], a panel of trophies to win, 2 Modes [Casual and Expert], and a simple yet interesting storyline.
I purchased the CE on BFG's special offer and completed the main game in about 6-7 hours over 2 afternoons without rushing, taking frequent breaks as I usually do, and admiring the artwork, plus 1.5 hour for the Bonus Chapter, a Secret Mission. The main game has a satisfactory close off and the extra chapter is nice to play though not essential to the comprehension of the story.
Needless to say I fully enjoyed Temple of Life and I am giving it a good recommendation as it is well suited to beginners and all those who want something relaxing and a change from somber plots full of demons and skulls.
I recommend this game!

This is one of the worst HOGs I have come across. There is little to say about it, actually: the graphics are more than mediocre, it's only HO Scenes upon HO Scenes with uninteresting puzzles in between, like "find the differences", "jigsaw puzzle", etc... which, luckily, can be skipped without having to wait.
The majority of HOs are ridiculously tiny [so are the differences], or perfectly invisible or totally unrecognizable; I had to find a TV set which didn't look like a TV set at all.
Even some objects that are not part of a search are undefinable. In one scene, a big lump of brown; was it as bread loaf or a giant slug ? I'll never know.
But the skull was visible. Why do they always have to put a skull in those HOGs ?
In another scene you are supposed to find "objects that don't make sense", such as handcuffs and a clock. LOL. I was rolling on the floor....no hidden object makes sense, ever, in any pure HO Scene, in any game. That was funny.
No action, no exploration, no useful objects, complete linearity.
Too much being to much I quit the demo after 22 minutes and uninstalled it.
I can't even recommend this game to HOG lovers, they deserve better.
I don't recommend this game.

Adapted from one of Mortimer and Blake' adventures, a famous comic book series made in Belgium, the game follows the original publication step by step.
The graphics are partly whole pages of the actual comic [a sample of which is given in the presentation] which serve both as HO Scenes as well as to tell the story. Additional HO Scenes and minigames come in intermittently. They are all hand-drawn, save for photos used either as background to certain scenes or as pictures of objects.
The storyline is quite interesting, as all of this pair's adventures are, and narrated with simplicity and not without talent. In fact the game reads like a book that would have a number of interactive episodes.
Everything is straightforward, easy, simple. I should say "very basic". No difficulty finding the HOs, no difficulty in any of the minigames which are skippable after a while.
The Hint System is slow and not very generous, but there is no reason why it should be; it is limited to 6 Hints maximum, but there's no real need to use them all. Collecting stars provide extra hints.
However, there isn't much originality anywhere. Especially the minigames which are rather lame. You even have a Match 3 half way through !
Due to maximum linearity, the adventure aspect is reduced to nil; no location to visit, no exploration, no useful item to find and therefore no action whatsoever.
The book was originally published in French. The English translation isn't bad at all on the whole but a few errors caused me to raise an eyebrow; "bar" instead of helm [or wheel], "sticks" instead of twigs, "ax" instead of axe, "pavilion" instead of flag.....
From a reader's point of view, the game is worth 4 stars; from a gamer's viewpoint it is hardly worth 2 stars. Let's split that in half and give it a 3 star rating.
As regards the recommendation, yes if you want to read a pretty entertaining comic book via your comp, no if gameplay is more important to you.
I recommend this game!

Ghostly and mildly spooky this game has a few interesting features and some novelties -though nothing truly extraordinary- which I will not unveil here to let you discover them. The intro is rapid and simple, the music, very dramatic at first, becomes softer but tends to get irritating at times.
The artwork is well crafted, neat, skilfully colored. Equally good are the voice-overs and the cutscenes.
All the HO Scenes are neat, though sometimes a bit crowded, the items clear and not difficult to find except, maybe, a couple per scene. But the friendly Hint System recharges fast, random clicking is not penalized, thus making each search a pleasant task even for players like me who are not crazy about pure HOs.
Hunting the useful objects is also quite pleasant and easy. For most of them, their use is pretty logical and natural, but many actions are unusual due to the element of novelty mentioned above. You sometimes have to think out of the box in order to successfully perform a task.
The puzzles are very easy, and I know that some of you are going to growl because of that... as I did, even though I find it relaxing to have something easy to tackle every now and then. They can be skipped.
The locales are interesting, you don't have to backtrack an awful lot, the objectives are clearly stated, and the game lets you know when an area has been cleared. There isn't a map; however, the game being fairly linear; no one should lose his way to the point of despair.
You have 3 different modes; I played the demo on Casual; the other two modes will slightly increase the difficulty for the searches and should not affect the minigames. Even on Hardest, the game should remain very manageable.
All in all a decent release, quite enjoyable, but which, unfortunately does not offer a high challenge level.
Count about 6 hours of playtime, more or less..
I recommend this game!

A pure HOG with a twist which consists in finding 3 clues by playing the HO Scenes before accusing one of 12 suspects, one of whom has committed a murder. After the second false accusation, the case is cold and you have to try again with a different victim.
And that's all there is to it.
The game is awkward, the graphics just about okay, the HOs viciously hidden, some of them being even totally invisible, a hint system that takes too long to refill, no minigames, no puzzles, no location to explore, no real challenge, and the suspects perfectly cartoonish.
I quit the demo after 25 minutes
I don't recommend this game.

Inca Sun is a pure HOG with rare minigames. There is no artwork as such. Every scene is a [very good] photo and each HO is also a reduced snapshot of objects and animals.
They are all clear, crsip and bright with vivid colors.
The HOs, though numerous, are easy to recognize as they are true to life [ex: the elephant looks like a real elephant] and they are not piled up; each HO Scene is thus tidy, neat, I am tempted to say "well organized". Objects are given in lists.
In addition you need to find two statues per HOS.
Not being a fan of HOGs I always play them on the easiest mode; misclicking is not penalized, so I can tell you I clicked and reclicked all over each scene....which cost me in accuracy, obviously. But who cares ? Inca Sun is a HOG as I like them.
You play for a score. At the end of each HOS you get statistics telling you how well you have played that HOS; this includes your score for that HOS, your accuracy and the time it took you to complete it. You also have a grand total score. No, I am NOT telling you mine, you'd laugh too much...LOL
Hints are limited to 5, but you can increase this number by finding coins; 1 coin = 1 hint.
Minigames are few and far apart and easy as pie. There is no action, no exploration, no mileage, no useful item to look for, and total playtime might be short since I managed to play the first 3 scenes of Chapter 4.
But, for once, I had fun for one hour, so I will recommend this game not only to HOG fans who want something easy for a change, but mainly to those who are not HOG aficionados and have nothing better to do, as well as to younger players and beginners.
I recommend this game!
