Based on completed demo (of the 90min they give you it stopped around 40min mark to thank me for playing & say the demo was over).
You play as Ana and she's there to help an older woman named Beth pick up her house. If I were to compare it to a type of game it reminds me a bit of the Gardenscapes series in a way. This is not a hidden object game. It's not a time management game and I didn't see any puzzles or minigames either. When you go into playing it, have an open mind that it's a new genre altogether. You click through a little storyline text between the 2 characters, Ana & Beth.
Beth must be one heck of a party animal because her house is trashed. Her furniture is overturned, paint cans are emptied on the carpets and there are even men’s ties thrown over the lamp. She threw her coffee on the floor when she's done with it and ripped holes in her own clothing. Haha At the time I'm writing this review, this game has less than thrilled reviews so I went into this game with a really low bar. Going into it the music was a bit much for me. When I turned it off I was happy there were still environmental sounds to listen to, like happily chirping birds etc. I also liked that there were moving items in the scene too.
Basically, it's clicking on items that are out of place to restore balance in the scene. You are given different tools that you click on to clean up certain things, like window cleaner and a rag to clean windows, and a floor brush to clean floor stains. You click items that are out of place to remove them (like a dirty coffee cup) and other items you drag and move to their rightful spots (a book to a bookshelf).
Whenever you are in the yard just be mindful the game isn't up front "user-friendly" in that you can't just talk to a person, or remove leaves, like in the inside rooms. So it leaves you thinking something is wrong with the game. So be aware there is a TEXT BOX/TO DO LIST window in the bottom left of the screen and each time you need to click the green "DO IT" tab to get Ana to respond.
I really looked the demo over well and didn't see any bonus content in the menu or anywhere else but I'm sure that's probably a Beta or just the demo thing because the game's main page lists the CE has, a bonus chapter, a walkthrough guide, download music, wallpapers and it has a character bios page (not sure why).
I actually enjoyed this game the more I played it but I wouldn't consider this CE worthy even if it did have the extra CE items listed above. I would have bought it the first really good sale had it been offered as an SE; so I'll wait until it is. So with this one, just play it long enough to give it a chance. I thought it was pretty cute after a while.
General: - You can play this game either Timed or Relaxed. I counted 15 scenes located in San Francisco. They are: 1. Golden Gate Bridge, 2. Aquarium by the Bay, 3. Academy of Sciences, 4. China Town, 5. Ferry Building Market Place, 6. Golden Gate Park, 7. Alcatraz, 8. High Tea, 9. Japanese Tea Garden, 10. Little Italy, 11. Lombard St., 12. Fisherman’s Wharf Pier 19, 13. Market St. 14. San Fran. Bay, & 15. San Fran. Zoo. - Each of these location scenes has 4 types of search modes. 1. ABC= listed items 2. silhouette items (not shadow items) 3. BCA =scrambled words 4. Mirror mode = all the letters are backwards
*** Only the first 4 of the above location scenes open (and can be played any order) until you play the scene enough times to gather more stars. I needed 10 stars before the next 4 scenes unlocked. I personally really dislike the search methods 2-4 listed above, so I played each of the 4 scenes again in ABC mode. Replaying the same scene grew really old but at least the items were in the same spot so you get faster at it the more times you play the scene.
- Each scene has 15 search items - Each scene has 1 silhouette trash item to find, to the left of the toolbar. - Each scene has 2 zoom zones (indicated by very little sparkle) and you only search for 2 items in these great scenes (why just 2 items?) - POINTS TAB (center top) shows how many points you’ve earned by finding the items (but I have no idea why you collect points). There is nothing to spend them on like in the Vacation Adventure series. - YELLOW STAR TAB- also center/top. Shows how many stars you collected by searching scenes. By playing the same 4 scenes a few times, (supposedly in all the different search modes) you gather enough stars to unlock the next 4 levels and so on.
What I liked: The graphics are clear and sharp, the scenes are interesting, and they use real people instead of cartoon ones which was a plus. I also liked the gaming sound effects.
What I didn’t like: - The hint was too slow - Some of the words were misspelled and that would be really annoying in the mirror or scrambled modes. - I had one item left… “macaroni” and couldn’t find it anywhere. I hit Hint, and it pointed out a cheeseburger. Haha I got a kick outta that. Word was “bottle cup” but it was a bottle cap is in the scene. Word was “lamp” but the hint pointed out a flashlight.
- I really disliked ALL of the search methods in this game other than the listed items type (which didn’t even have 2-steppers). I don’t like Silhouettes because the empty blob can be anything. I just prefer to look for either “Shadow items” or just a pic. of the actual item (like Jewel Match series does). The Scrambled words mode is just annoying and the Mirror mode made me a little upset to my stomach.
I think this would be a 5star game if they improved these things: - If it’s a travel game it should have some facts or trivia about the location you are searching. - I couldn’t figure out why each of the 2 zoom zones in each scene only had 2 items to search for. Those were really great scenes with a lot of detail and it felt like such a waste to only find 2 items. - Change the search modes a bit. I love 2 step items and putting items back into the scene where they belong. If only a HOG would have would have just those as a method. - I’m not a fan of HOG music so when you shut it off there are no “environmental sounds” in this game. Big Adventure: Trip to Europe & the Vacation Adventure series has this down pat. You hear water, wind, birds, etc. instead of just game effect sounds as this game is. - The scenes in this game have no movement. That is also perfected in the games I’ve listed above. Right on down to 2 step items, example, find the strawberries, put them in the blender, and it actually makes a blending noise. - Add more scenes. Please stop making us search the same scene over and over for those yellow stars to unlock more scenes. For ppl like me that don’t like the other search methods, it just makes this game a no buy because it’s so annoying searching the same scene several times in the same method. Too bad, because the things I like about this game I actually love.
It's best to go into this game knowing up front it’s not a HOPA, its multiple hidden object scenes and mini-games only and you decorate a scene with stars you collect. I'm noticing a lot of other players don't really like this kind of game because you aren't "walking" from one scene to another (there's no adventure here) and I think maybe that’s why it’s getting lower ratings… they’re disappointed it’s not a HOPA.
I’ve always liked this kind of game in general and thought this installment was a lot better than the first. I thought the graphics were better this time around. I really loved the circus HOP with the multiple scenes of paper cut-outs; it was adorable and beautifully illustrated. It’s my favorite type of HOS, when you put items back into the scene.
This game had a lot of different types of hidden object scenes too. It's something a bit different from the HOPAs and also different than the straight-up HOGs, and I think it has its own place here as a Hybrid-HOG.
I really liked they added a setting to remove the shadow bullseye from the mouse-click in options.
I'll buy it when the SE comes out next month because it really doesn't have enough CE content for me to pay double.
I really loved the storyline in this game and it really did feel like a Mystery Case Files game to me. I loved how the dev thought to put the main character in Charles Dalimar's body and we get to go back in time. I love time travel games in general, so I was so happy with that. I absolutely loved hanging out in the time when Ravenhearst began, with the original characters. I thought it was beautifully illustrated too. I especially liked seeing Charles's reflection in the storefront window, just such a fun way of showing us the switch of characters. I thought the music was perfect and environmental sounds were just spot on. It almost feels like you can breathe the air in Victorian London.
It felt like a lot of thought and energy went into creating this MCF. Another reviewer (lists589) mentioned Vermillion Watch. Great point. This game does have the feel of that series.
Another game that reminded me of this MCF was Mystery of the Ancients: No Escape. I put it in the link if you want to try it out. (It also has a robot which does these cool 3D special effects as he creates communication screens and portal doors).
Thank you GrandMa for another great MCF. Well done!
The reviewers before me have already done this game justice but I just want to add my applause to their stack. This game is first class quality all the way. Cutscenes of yesteryear push the story forward and you can't wait until the next one. There are 30 collectible morphs; they actually let you flip through the CE version walkthrough guide which has 6 chapters (62 pages of gameplay). There is nothing to hide here and all I see should have bragging rights.
The clarity and detail of the graphics is a cut above. The beauty of the scenery, the artistry, to the crayon box colors they used are just spot on. The environmental sounds, voice actors and music are all A+ too. Look at the detail of the Koi fish swimming around their tranquil little pond. I wish I could “I Dream of Jeannie” myself into that scene.
The character we play has a voice! AND a picture thumbnail of our main character so we are so much more connected to the game play just because we know who we are playing as. Wow, I have missed that so much!!! There is an actual journal that holds this involved storyline. I only wish all the notes we encountered would end up in the journal because I noticed some of them are scattered in scenes and left there. Our Granny has perfected the way a journal should be done... where cutscenes can be viewed sequentially with the game's story notes we find. I prefer it that way because I usually buy these games on sale and this is a way to review the story after leaving the demo for awhile. I love to take my time and immerse myself in any 5BN game. I want to look at every little detail these gaming developer geniuses have created for us to enjoy. You can literally feel the TLC the creators put into this game. This developer obviously reads the reviews that fans have left over time to create quality like this. It feels like this developer cares and that in turn makes me care. Care enough to buy the CE version right out the gate and not on sale (which I’ve done since last August). I love this series and this game is another great addition. I’ve missed this beloved developer so much. I highly recommend the CE.
Google says 5BN is from the Ukraine...you have my support and you are in my prayers still. Thank you to all of you at that worked on this awesome game. You should be so proud of yourselves.
The first thing I thought was how beautiful the graphics are. They are variations of full page clutter items using professional photography & pictures of real life items. It feels like this DEV cares about the details and what the gamer is seeing. Just beautifully done and I think it’s best in its class.
The game has 18 categories (such as vegetables, beach items, candy, fall foliage items, and places) and in each of those categories there are 4 groupings of games which are:
1. One “sort” (matching items) 2. One “so much stuff” (which is a unique version of a hidden object game where you find the objects hidden under clutter where there are written listed items to find on post-its). 3. One “click & swap puzzle” 4. And one jigsaw puzzle
General: -The only thing I didn't like as much was the sound effect when picking up an item. This loud "bling-bling" is used in almost every Boomzap game and I have to turn it off because it's such an annoying sound. Funny because I really do care about the sound effects after playing these games for years. -The guitar music was nice but it looped a bit too much and I ended up turning it off. - There was an "ambient sound" slider in options, but it didn't do anything when all other sounds were muted. - I was surprised to see it released as a CE. I’ll wait for the SE to be released next month, which is half the price.
Thank you to the people at Tiny Little Lion that created this great clutter, hog, and jigsaw game. Beautifully done!
I thought this game had a lot of fun features that made it a little different than most M3s. I also thought this DEV paid attention to details and tried really hard to make a fun game. It has a lot going for it. This is a definite buy.
3 MODES: Relaxed, Limited moves, & Timed
* There is enough glitter & bang (loved the BOO button!) * The music changed enough & fit the game * There were a lot of tile designs and they changed enough * This game is very responsive to fast matching (in relaxed mode) * It has a reason for matching by upgrading a build area. * 1920 x 1080 selection makes for crystal clear graphics. * The boards are festive and cover most of your monitor. * 6 cursor choices * I loved the light passages you create on the M3 boards to get the Spooky Dwellers. * I really loved the HOP levels. There are real items set up like a clutter game and you are shown ½ of the item to search for in the thumbnail pic. line-up.
BUILD AREA: As you complete the M3 boards, you are given in-game currency to spend on decorating a stone terrace for Halloween. It has 24 upgrade items that I could see in the demo. The only thing that could have been a little better would be to make us M3 rich. It's hard enough to get coin IRL "). The items cost 1000 to 9500 coins for items 1 to 24 (so expensive). I just don't think 24 items is enough for anything over 50 play levels. I just prefer when *every* level ends, you should be able to to pick at least one small upgrade. That & multiple build scenes, like they do in the Jewel Match series (the only M3 I've ever been M3 rich.)
CE version extras: *60 bonus match 3 levels (avail. after 90 levels play) * 7 wallpapers (1 unlocks with the demo) * Bonus minigames (after 30 regular) which are: > 2 (11, 12) HO > 2 (6, 7) Puzzles > 10 (1-10) Higher or Lower >10 (1-10) The Coin Collector >More art & stories which unlock after 15 standard levels. The demo shows 1, called Granny's House, which has a before and after character drawing and a pictures of the house. This excellent game was developed by Iki Games.
COMPLETED GAME (I bought the CE) When you first see this game's homepage, it appears to be a HOPA and it’s not. This one doesn't have the adventure aspect. It’s a HOG-Only (I call these HOGOs in my notes.) It's the kind of game that is multiple HOS with MG in between. It has a *very* light mystery/crime story without voice actors.
This game took me 2hr. 22min. over 2 days. It's way too short to be a CE but I loved the game and glad I had the extra scenes the CE gives you. I just hope their next game is a lot longer. I did most of the minigames in the main game but skipped all of the CE MG aside from 3...so the game will be longer for those that like the MG more than me.
HOPs: I counted 32 HOPs in the main portion and 8 additional in the CE bonus content. Most scenes have 16 to 20 listed items and some scenes have 2 parts. There are a lot of really fun "types" of HOPs such as lists, put items back into scenes, shadow items, find multiples of an item, and riddle items.
MG: I counted 16 in the main game + 8 additional in the CE bonus content.
Minor negatives: (-) Some items were disproportionate. I found a pill in a bathroom cabinet the size of a barbell. Haha (-) The story was too light and kind of lame. Our character is tracing the steps of a baddie named "Faceless" but we can clearly see the dude's face. Lol (-) This game really needed environmental sounds instead of just HOG music. A couple of camping scenes in particular had a lake and fire so it would have been nicer to actually hear the campfire sounds at night. (-) POINTS: This game gives you points but you don't use them for anything so no idea why they are there. You don’t purchase anything with them either. The CE display shelves auto filled instead of the gamer getting to purchase stuff with them, like the VA series, so I found the shelves pointless too. Positives: + I really love how this developer puts many items in the search scenes that will make noise and react when you find them (ex: a blender actually works to make a strawberry shake and makes the blending noise too. ) I really pay attention to details like this. It feels like the DEV cared enough about the gamer to add these touches just to amuse us. + The graphics are clear and the scenes are interesting. Especially when you get to put items back into the scene or items that require additional steps to complete them. + I quickly became a huge fan of this DEV with the Big Adventure: Trip to Europe games because they pay attention to details and you can tell they care what the gamer is seeing. There are moving things in each scene (like the VA series). I want to own their CEs because of the TLC they put into their games.
CE EXTRAS: 8 addl. Minigames 8 addl. HOPs 18 wallpapers (not completely covered with character art) Replay 20 music tracks (no DL- play only) “Extra Objects”: Those extra objects you search for in the corner of each HOS are kept on some shelves to view. They auto-appear onto the shelves. (I would lose this feature.)
If you like this game you may also like the Faircroft’s Antiques series.
Now you're talkin' GrandMa! This game had me interested every single second. It is full of atmosphere the way a MCF title should be.
* I really liked the storyline based on the missing skiers which kind of reminded me of a chill version of The Blair Witch Project. * I especially liked that you had us outside in the cold for a while. The artwork was outstanding and locations were absolutely gorgeous. But the coolest thing was you managed to make the player feel uneasy, all at the same time. Bravo. *I loved finding the cassette tapes to play in the video recorder. *The diary was great too. It holds enough story to actually read and the cutscenes are in sequential order with the notes so you can brush up on it whenever you want because it is all in one place and not scattered around town, as some of these games do. * The notes, articles, brochures, photos, etc. looked real and they were all done with care. If you like mystery games played in the snow, here are some others that have a similar feel: - Phantasmat: Crucible Peak - Crime Secrets: Crimson Lily - Dreamwalker: Never fall asleep - Phantasmat: Reign of Shadows
I want to take a second to say thank you to the developers that continue to work for our entertainment in the face of so much adversity. This fan appreciates you! What a beautiful job, to all of you that worked on this amazing game. You should be proud of yourselves (especially considering the conditions you completed it under.)
