The Empress of the Tar Kingdom, Patricia, is ambitious and when a petrified dragon is found, she wants it at her palace for an exhibition, thereby ignoring all warnings by her advisor Dr. Klein. There is a history of good relationships between dragons and humans, though long ago, and dragon magic could help the kingdom once. But there had been the one, who chose the realm of the demons over the one of the humans and this dragon could still do great harm. So, who is this petrified creature?
Dr.Klein calls for us, the healer, who is immune against black magic. Our mission will be again protection and defence of the tar kingdom, its empress and people. The dragon easily frees himself of his shell and turns out to be the dangerous Gromoss, the one, who chose the demons over the humans. His first move shall be to turn all people into demons with his fire. When we enter the palace, he has already infected the empress and the process of transmutation is beginning.
So, healer, diagnose and treat! Of course our diagnostic tool and the medical kit are part of our equipment again. The diagnostic process is now extended by small puzzles for each area that is infected. Collecting ingredients and brewing the potion is unchanged. We can heal Patricia and after her, the next victim, her weather specialist. After extinguishing the infectious flames, the danger for the people is averted and we set out to destroy Gromoss.
As all games in this series, a charming fantasy feast, spiced with many puzzles and HOS, all variable, puzzles with easy/hard option. The plot unfolds fast and the story is given mainly in HOS or in dialogues. Fantasy is not my specialty in games, this case of black dragon magic is another well made game in this series, a must have for fans!
Start out in the year 1790 in a balloon. You destination: the Polynesian islands. With some average puzzles we manage to steer our balloon into the right direction, but – as usual in a game – our journey does not work out, as planned. A crash instead of a smooth landing, on one of the islands. Luckily a local girl directs us to the shore. Has she been waiting there for someone, falling from the sky? Packed in a puzzle, she gives directions, next, the female ruler of the islands is not amused and we are imprisoned in a hut. Again, the girl is helpful and piece by piece, we learn more about the story: the man Hiro, having wooed in vain for the ruler’s hand, has stolen an artifact to win her over. It is the instrument with which she calms the evil spirits of the depths. So she must regain it, if possible without fulfilling his conditions.
So our task is clear: get back the artifact……
A lot of HOS let us find the things we're getting ahead with. The plot is developing rather slowly and I wonder what legend it could be. No real excitement or thrill is generated here. A happy ending is very foreseeable, so to speak, and I don't even want to know what will happen next.
As usual, beautiful colors and a professional design, but this is not enough for an adventurous journey through a Polynesian world of legends.
Who killed the security guard - nothing, as it looks like at first glance in your first case, player! You work together with your experienced partner, Inspector Abby and have to look into a reported death on the shore of a private island, where the wealthy Bradfords reside. Reported as accident or suicide, still needs a closer look, so you will investigate the crime scene and question all residents.
Landed on the island, you ask for the files – this way we learn about Mark Spector, the victim, the residents of the estate and their relations, as far as known at this point of the game. There is an evidence board, where clues are put together, introduced right here. Very soon we can exclude accident or suicide as cause of death. Evidence shows time of death, so one of the questions, we will have to ask, is the alibi of everybody, present on the island at that time.
The same questions will be asked to all, in between questioning persons, the evidence board is filled. Very soon it becomes quite clear, motives are everywhere and the alibis leave time for a murder. Plot is developed step by step in a retro detective game manner. No surprise, all have something to hide and the glamour of the world of the rich on this island gets less and less shiny with every chapter.
HOS and puzzles are the normal diet, nothing especially challenging or creative, though placed rather logically in the gameflow. Story is nothing new at all, reminds me more of of an early evening serial, shallow entertainment, beautifully presented but without great demands or challenge of the mind.
We all have our beloved serials – on TV as well as in games. Perhaps, we had sometimes thought of bringing together characters of one series with those of another one?
Our wish has been fulfilled: we will have three detectives from three series in one game: Dorian Brown, Mystery Trackers, James Blackthorne, Paranormal Detective and Anna Gray, Private Investigator. We know them for their special knowledge and abilities. And: we will revisit places of former games in the series, e.g. Black Isles, Raincliff…….
The game begins at Mystery Trackers headquarters, when Dorian Brown is given a mission after some years in the archives. The Queen herself had asked for him to solve a case of burglary at the Royal Palace. And it will not be some of the royal treasures only, that is missing. Precious artifacts have been stolen as well…. Glad to be activated again, Dorian starts investigating at the palace. There he meets James Blackthorne and later, when they follow clues to Black Island, both will unite with Anna Gray. She has her unique accessory: Daddy – or at least his skull. Each of the detectives has his or her own specialty and together they should be up to everything - but not only the detectives, also a villain from a series has his appearance and problems arise, as he has polished his skills and seems a worthy opponent for the three. It is the Collector.
A very entertaining event especially for those, who have experienced the classics Mystery Trackers and Grim Tales with Daniel and Anna. Gameplay is no surprise, a mix of HOS and puzzles, both not too difficult, fast paced with many collectables – real fun!
The Day of the Dead is very popular in certain parts of the world. On this holiday friends and family members of those who have died gather together to pray for them and bring to their graves the deceased’s favorite foods, often including the traditional “sugar skulls” and the “bread of death.” It has become a happy festival nowadays. But not here, on the day of the almost dead!
Equipped better than in the early days of the series, when we got letters, we receive a mail on our tablet. Santa Muerte asks for help, as an evil spirit threatens to take over the land of the living and turn it into a land of the dead. Specialized in cases with ghosts, who cannot find their final rest, we leave for the place. Meeting the woman, we learn, it is Shibalba, who has to be defeated. He needs three more souls to win his battle, so we have to save those souls to ban the evil spirit.
The the game is well made concerning visuals and effects, We use our smarphone as helpful tool, so a tribute to present times even in an old series. In the attempt to make the game more challenging, than usual, we have mini puzzes for almost every step. There is no opening of a chest or door without such obstacle. HOS are mainly lists, nothing special.
As in all Redemption Cemetery games we have a story with 3 substories, here for each soul to be saved. Though relatively fast paced concerning the plot(s), I feel as if I visit a well known place: there are the souls, finding no rest, so I have to bring order in their former lives. An all time varied story, which surely has fans.
We play as Julia Hanson. an old lighthouse has been left to us by our uncle Abe. not an ordinary building but he and his brother had used it as the base for the family business. They were hunters. special hunters, as we will see soon enough.
After learning the news, we are off to take a first glance at the property. On the bridge, leading to the lighthouse island, we meet the inevitable sidekick in the game: Ash, the dog. Then, the usual obstacles: a figure with a gun, defending Abe’s property and only after showing his last will, we can prove our right to be here as Abe’s heir. Of course, we have difficulties opening the door…… Finally in the lighthouse, we step by step learn more about the family business. Abe and his brother Rick were hunters. They hunted creatures, apparently out of another realm and in possession of special powers. Able to control lightning, fire and ice, people in this world are afraid of them, so Abe and Rick hunted them and offered them a safe haven, they called the sanctuary. This sanctuary is the cube, part of our heirloom as well. It is used in the course of the game with a puzzle. The creatures transfer their powers to the owner of the cube, so it has to be protected, as in the wrong hands, it represents a great danger.
And this is coming only an instant after learning about the secret: the stranger, who acted quite friendly after we proved our claim, turns out to be our cousin Triss, jealous and believing, she were the rightful heir. She takes the cube, the creatures escape but she could come into possession of the supernatural powers and misuse them. Our mission: hunt the escaped creatures, lead them back in their sanctuary and fight the opponent.
Again the game is well made concerning visuals, effects, The story: fantastic beings who need protection but are feared by most because they fear the foreign, family discord, good against evil with many fantastic elements. Then we have the series mascot, the dog, presented in the same unsavory scene, as in the last game of the series.
Perhaps after the demo, the more exiting part of the game is waiting, so far, it is more or less an average fairly entertaining one, nothing extraordinary.
The ‘Ice Spell’ had set an end to the Lost Lands saga, as we have known it. In the Mistakes of the Past we meet Susan on a strange mission. The introduction of the game jumps into the plot right away with an action scene: a figure is running through a middle aged looking town, a giantic spider is following her, then somebody pulls her insight a house.
Susan has come to the parallel world out of her own free will this time. The stranger in the house is Fiora, Maroon’s great granddaughter. Maroon has been taken captive by the witch Cassandra. Fiora has found a way into Maroon’s laboratory and together they find out, what Maroon intended to do, when he was caught. Maroon had been adopted son and student of Cassandra since his youth, when she asked him to kill her, as she wanted to protect the world frome her deadly disease, which had befallen her, after being wounded in the war against the arachnoids. Maroon didn’t obey and only drugged her, so she fell into a deep coma and young Maroon gained time to find a cure. Only, he never found one. So he intended to correct the mistake of the past and go back in time to kill her and put an end to the disease, that had transformed her into the evil witch. Maroon failed again and it is up to Susan, to go back in time and kill Cassandra.
Not only has Susan come to the Lost Lands out of her own free will, the whole performance is different. This time our heroine has not to meet her challenges in a jogging suit, but has prepared for her adventure. She will not walk through portals but time travel via an amulet. A fresh touch to the series, which I like. Gameplay is smooth, pace fast and we have the creative ‘puzzle-HOS’! The story is given via dialogues and the scrolls, you find. Love it, they kept the diary, where one can always look up a detail, which may have gone missing. A really successful reset of an older series, a must-have for me.
The famous Phantom of the Opera awaits us in this dark romance. Again we will play two roles, that of Christine Burns, a singer on her way to a career and that of Raul Delacroix, her fiancé. The Phantom has been given a face: it is Isaac Cloden. He has created an eerie realm in a shadow world, in which he had his destroyed opera house rebuilt, populated by allies and prisoners. With her excellent voice Christine has aroused his interest. She shall be part of the great performance. He kidnaps her, but Raul can follow through the portal – a mirror. The Phantom’s realm has other laws than the real world. Both have to fight against the magic powers of Isaac and his minions but as well find allies among those, who are imprisoned here.
One of the fascinating features of the Dark Romance is playing two characters and solving tasks by sharing them: Raul as well as Christine have to do their part to end up in a solution. The atmosphere is dark and oppressive. Isaac Cloden, is not portrayed as a man, one could pity for his fate as in the literary template of the Phantom of the Opera. Plot unfolds immediately, right after Raul’s ‘question of all questions’ to Christine, the Phantom steps out of the mirror and takes her with him. A fast paced game with many HOS and puzzles. Well placed at least in the demo. In the settings, you can set the difficulty for the puzzles to easy or hard but you can change it within the game for the individual puzzle too. Three kinds of collectibles: posters, theatre props and crystals can be found – the indicator is helpful.
Gameplay is smooth, the change of roles offers more challenge and the story took me in right away. Another must-have in this series.
Grim Tales time again and Anna Gray and Richard are off to help one their family members, who has managed to be murdered!
Indeed, Jackie Gray has become the victim of a serial killer. We learn the news from a letter of Alexander, her father, who is with the police. He is sure, the killer must be the one, who was the perpetrator in a serial killing case 17 years ago, which he and his partner couldn’t solve at that time. There had been 17 murders, none of which could be solved. Alex’ partner Chris left the police then, whereas Alex stayed and now needs our special abilities to make the murder of his daughter ‘undone’. Therefore Anna has to go back in time and help him hunt the killer down.
17 years ago, Alex suspected his partner to be the killer. We are led into the last of the 17 murder cases and set on the trace of Deborah, the victim and Chris, the alleged killer.
With the diving in the past we dive into a more or less old fashioned syle ‘who donit’, where we have a task list and every one is checked after fulfilling it. We gather clues and evidence, get insights of Deborah’s story as well as we may take a look into the policeman’s inner world, while searching the places of importance.
With many HOS and puzzles, both varied and fairly creative in style, the plot unfolds fast. Of course Richard is there to lend a helping hand. For beginners, the game may be more of a challenge but more experienced players will have much fun but not so much of a challenge but for all it will offer a lot of fun.
Mechanic toys and robots, first steps on the way to artificial intelligence have always been a bit spooky to many. But we are not on our way into a sci fi game, we will have to find out, what in our past is restless enough, to stir up the present.
We play as Fear for Sale magazine’s reporter Emma, as usual in the long living series. This time there are strange events, which seem to have their origin in the 1960ies. On the day after the celebration of our magazines anniversary, we are called into the office. A murderous doll is attacking our friends. So, action, Emma!
Variable, creative but numerous HOS, mixed with puzzles, lie on our way in the rich scenery, typical for this developer. Sadly another typical ‘feature’ is present: the loading screen, which comes up when scenes change.
On the one hand, an entertaining, well told story, I want to explore, on the other hand, game mechanics, that impress more with ‘not quite state of the art’.
