I'd give this 3.5 stars if I could. A good continuation of the series and its great look encourages the extra 1/2 point.
I appreciate having a hardcore level, but I'd rather not have the little buddy do ANYTHING for me except what I instruct him to do. Please, don't have him show me the next task but only help me work when appropriate. Otherwise, good fun.
I recommend this game!

I read all the negative reviews and simply wasn't turned off by a game of tic-tac-toe, a huge snake lapping up milk, or termites opening a drawer. The storyline and gameplay is quite entertaining and I look forward to collecting the extras.
My one complaint with which I agree with the naysayers: it's not much of a challenge, not even in hard mode. Don't narrate my moves and tell me what I need think about in hard mode.
I recommend this game!

Was exhilarating having so many timed achievements to chase. Naturally, I was too slow to collect all of them. What keeps this from being a 5-star game for me is the inability to reset the mini-games. Despite feeling set-up for failure I was able to complete them all without skipping. Mighty proud, too, that I didn't need to deal with the helper - only enjoy them if they can actually help me work like the puppet helper in "PuppetShow - Destiny Undone."
I recommend this game!

I wanted so much to love this one because I loved Sins of the Fathers. Like that one, the art is top notch, the wallpapers outstanding to behold. But aside from trying to get my horse to the castle I wasn't challenged very much in hardcore mode. I prefer to figure things out for myself everywhere possible, but I couldn't figure out before the 1-hour trial ended what a "magical" achievement item was supposed to be. Were they morphing? The shape of the fruit represented in the achievement window?
I think I could have ignored what those who rated this lower than 3 stars complained about (the chatty princess can be skipped), provided I felt I was truly playing a dark themed, hardcore hidden object game instead of a fairy-tale adventure one.
I don't recommend this game.

This is one of the shortest collectors' editions I've ever played. The art is lovely and game play pretty simple even in hardcore mode. The bonus chapter is where all of the challenge existed for me: extensive storyline with great wallpapers and concept art; some movements weren't so obvious and I needed to consult the strategy guide once to move forward.
I would've given this 4 stars if I had any investment at all in what happened to the main characters. What's the Prince of the Floral Kingdom's first name?
I don't recommend this game.

I agree with one complaint from some of those who rate this game below 3 stars: yes, it's for children. That's not a bad thing - I enjoy many things that may be marketed specifically to children and this is one. No child, boy or girl, will be able to resist rubbing a finger against the computer screen and then licking it in hopes of tasting some of the treats.
I also wonder what game mode the critics chose. In hard mode, my adult self enjoyed chasing the achievements (I failed to find all 40 cupcakes upon completing the game) and that the objects in HOGs that needed combining didn't require extra clicks to gain credit. If "Cup of Tea" is the hint, find the teapot, pour the tea into a teacup, and BLING, cup of tea is crossed out on the list. Usually, creating the cup of tea requires an additional click after the tea fills up the cup.
If you remember Hansel and Gretel, give this a try in the hardest mode.
I recommend this game!

...this would be a 5-star game. I really enjoyed the story, the art and going after the achievements. But every time I was given a clue where to look while in hard core mode, I was turned off.
I recommend it for beginners, not experts.

...right clicking the mouse actually did change the colors EVERY SINGLE TIME as the playing instructions suggest. Alas, it doesn't always work: there are instances that no matter how many times you right click the color remains the same as the color you don't need at the moment, which puts you at a disadvantage. Oh well, I still recommend it.
I recommend this game!

Not only beautiful art, but challenging enough that I struggled to move forward in certain places. Some of the best concept art I've ever had the pleasure of easily downloading, then recovering on my C drive to include in desktop themes. I will look for more games from Specialbit...

Oh humbug on all the critiques about noodling with a beloved storyline. The best reason to buy this game is the Blizzard Blitz mode: no sparkles, not skips, no hints of any kind. Exactly the way a hard mode HOG should be played! I own more than 100 games and have completed most of them in hard mode, but none of them have a hard mode as hardcore as this - including the previous Nutcracker.
In desperate need of challenge?
I recommend this game!
