I don't usually give a review for a game before I've completed the main game and the bonus chapter (which is why I rate so rarely, lol) but this one sucked me in and the demo ended with a cool bang. Other reviewers do an excellent job of giving all the details you'll need about the game. I'm just going to give you the bottom line.
The gameplay is WAY COOL! It has aspects of Shrouded Tales (learning to wield magic and travel through portals), Dark Realms:Queen of Flames (Dynamite Dragon and a surprise demo ending), Lost Lands:The Four Horsemen (The wizard, warrior, gnome instead of dwarf, the tower of the wanderers, etc.), and the evil villainess is reminiscent of DP Queen of Sands (just in the artwork- I didn't like QofS at all), and Dream of Ruins. Plus, this is made by the same folks who gave us the awesome League of Light. So if you're a fantasy game lover then you'll definitely dig this one!
The story is solid, puzzles are fine but not very challenging, some repetition every time you use your magic (ala Shrouded Tales, etc. but I like the puzzle so I don't mind)
I'm buying as soon as I finish typing this review!
I recommend this game!

Completed Game and Bonus Chapter
I love the Spirits of Mystery series. Song of the Phoenix is the first game I ever bought on BigFish and I've purchased them all. The artwork is gorgeous, so stunning that I screenshot random areas that I like and use them for my desktop. The puzzles are interesting and fun. The story line is ongoing and engaging. So imagine my excitement when I read the preview for this edition and saw that evil Isa is actually going to get a backstory and have a chance to be a hero! I bought it right away and dove right in! ... only to find that this game is terrible.
I'm a story/plot enthusiast. I can forgive a lot and suspend disbelief to an outrageous level if the story is good. In this case it bordered on ridiculous. I don't want to spoil the story for you but the big reveal is actually pretty obvious from the beginning of the story. What bothers me is the reaction to the big reveal. It's handled in a way that is soooo unrealistic that it's impossible to believe that the society at large would accept it. The main character and the castle folks (in the bonus chapter) just go along with it like it's OK, and in a monarchical society it would not be at all. Plus, there are huge holes in the logic of the plot and the timeline.
The huge plot holes would actually have been bearable if the execution had been handled better. Most of the major reveals of Isa's story come out during HOs in which you have to find objects from sentences. This is really where the fault lies as it's the very poor English translations in the black bar tips, puzzles, and HOs that ruin the story. There are too many errors and the language is too simplistic. It makes the characters' inner voices and the story sound childish and improbable. I was rolling my eyes through the entire game.
There are other issues like ridiculous things you have to do in the course of the game play that make no sense and the fact that it looked like the king only had one servant and one greedy guard in the whole castle. But IMO these are minor things in comparison to the language issue and the plot holes.
As usual it's visually gorgeous but this edition of Spirits of Mystery is, to me, the worst in the series. Too bad as I was looking forward to it.
I don't recommend this game.

I liked the game overall, as I've liked other Sable Maze games before this one. The story was interesting even though there were a few holes in the plot. The only problem that I have with it is a completely unsatisfying resolution at the end of the game. The bonus chapter was more of a prequel and doesn't satisfy either. It left the gamer with more questions than answers.
Otherwise - visuals, artwork, VOs, gameplay - all topnotch.
I recommend this game!

So much has been said in praise of this game that there's really very little I could add. It was just amazingly good.
Everything was well done from the storyline to the quests to the character development of Yati. The only way they could make this game better would be to make it longer so we could enjoy it even more.
I loved the exotic environment, the touch of history, how Yati and his people were portrayed.
Kudos to the developers. I cannot recommend this enough!
Now I have to go buy the first one and wait for part 3 to appear.
I recommend this game!

I don't usually like this type of game but, it's a lazy day today at home with my sprained ankle up in the air so, I thought I'd give it a try. Glad I did!
It's funny and very easy to get caught up in the action. There's not a whole lot of plot development, etc. as in the usual HO/Adventure games but with a few cut-ins you know what's happening.
You're basically building things and fixing things as fast as you can through the levels while trying to keep the princess from catching up to you. Cute.
I'm not interested enough to get the CE because this doesn't strike me as having a lot of replay value, but I'd pick it up as an SE with a free game bonus any time.
I recommend this game!

I really liked this game. It has its faults but is overall enjoyable.
THE GOOD: The storyline is very twisty and engaging - medieval soap opera style. We, the jaded modern players, can see pretty clearly who the bad guy is early on, but through gameplay and gathering evidence you get to reveal the truth step-by-step to the clueless, suffering count.
The VO acting is done very well. The puzzles and HOSs are alright - not spectacular but good enough.
THE BAD = BELIEVABILITY: The setting is supposed to be a castle in Romania that's being restored as an exhibit to the tragedy of poor Count Lucian and his lost Alexandra - its last occupants. Everyone knows it's haunted and the undertaker is very matter-of-fact about it. Ok, that's believable. BUT beyond that there are so many little holes. For example, how are there paintings of the night of Alexandra's death depicting all the people and exactly what they wore (as if it were a photo) when an artist would have had to be commissioned to do it and wouldn't have known that info without models? How did an artist make a painting of Nikolai and Alexandra having a private conversation? The blacksmith's clue hidden inside an object hundreds of years ago also held a piece to open a modern door? The alchemist's potions weren't all dried up and still worked? All the little clues just sitting around the castle for hundreds of years and no one moved anything? Or found anything? etc. etc. The list goes on and on. It was soooooooo not believable. At all. (And I'm just going to pretend that the ghost dog helper doesn't exist.)
WHY THE BAD DOESN'T REALLY MATTER (To me, anyway): Usually, that many inconsistencies in the game play kills a story for me but this time it can be overlooked. One, because the story itself is interesting enough that we want to find out what happens while rolling our eyes at the nonsense. But mostly because the artwork in this game is so devastatingly gorgeous that it overtakes the little logic problems in the gameplay. The scenery is so well drawn, so real, that you actually want to go to visit this place.
So if you are a stickler for storyline like me, you'll like this one but be prepared to grimace quite a few times at the lack of logic in the gameplay.
I recommend this game!

I've never played Midnight Castle so my opinion is based on my experience with this COMPLETED GAME only.
The game was just ok, mostly because it was too easy and too short. I played it on expert/hard mode and it only took about 3.5 hours from start to finish.
The puzzles were alright. The graphics were, for me, too cartoonish. The VOs were fairly good. The storyline was just so so. The HOs were very simple. The gaming experience was very middle-of-the-road.
The demo was interesting enough for me to get this as a free game but the overall impression was just.... blah. If I'd paid good money for it I'd probably be angry.
I can't NOT recommend it, because it wasn't bad, but I don't highly recommend it either. If you play with young children then you'll probably like it. If you're an adult advanced player you'll probably wanna skip this.

BASED ON THE COMPLETED GAME AND BONUS CHAPTER
First off, the graphics and vo's were all tip-top. Clean, gorgeous imaging, well-acted roles. Game-play was smooth with no glitches. Puzzles were interesting and could be done on "hard" or "casual" - they weren't difficult at all but were just interesting enough to hold my attention. HOs were a nice variety of interactive/list/silhouette etc. Warrior masks from around the world were a cool collectible.
If all those things were great, then why did I give it 3 stars? Well, where this game fell apart for me is in the storyline. The beginning in the demo was great, full of excitement and a possible supernatural bad-guy. The resurrection episodes with the mysterious spirit-cat, the theme of revenge for an unjustly killed character, and the eerie/sinister avenger made me think of the organ grinder from Chimeras:Tune of Revenge. I was excited and all for it, gung-ho. But disappointment soon followed.
First, the story was full of too many little incidences of ridiculousness. Like - why would a permanent fixture from the courthouse be outside in a basket on the back of a donkey? Why would a key feature of a needed item from the house of the long-dead victim be hidden inside the home of the bad guy? When/why/how would he have put it there before he croaked? If you're in an ancient ruin of a palace that's close to a town, why has it not been ransacked? Why are the corpses - esp. a king - still lying around? Why would a long-dead mage leave a potion for ant-killer - and the ingredients still be fresh? There were tons of these kinds of things in the story and they made no sense. Also, all the supernatural build-up in the demo just fizzled out to an all-too-mundane conclusion. It made all that resurrection stuff redundant. It's almost as if they changed creative teams halfway through development - or just didn't want to resemble Chimeras too closely. Which is ironic because if they had stayed in that vein then the story would've been much better.
Overall just a so-so experience.
If you're considering between the SE and the CE, I'd just go for the SE. I play mostly for the storyline and the Bonus Chapter is a prequel of how the avenger became the avenger. It doesn't add anything unknown or that you couldn't figure out from the main game; no real enhancement of the story. The rest of the bling is meh.
If you play these games just to play and aren't a stickler for the story then you'll enjoy this one but if you're like me and really get into a good storyline, then you'll like the demo and be disappointed after.
Some folks talk about the violence/grimness. It's not anymore violent or grim than your average action movie. That being said, it's not for little kids.
I can't not recommend this because it is enjoyable as you play through, but it's such a let-down that I'm recommending with a jaundiced side-eye grimace on my face.
I recommend this game!

BASED ON COMPLETED GAME AND BONUS CHAPTER
This was a great game which has been reviewed many times (as it should be - it's that awesome!) so I'm just gonna throw in my two cents on certain points.
For those of us who are all about the plot - the story is different and interesting! It's adventurous, futuristic, nostalgic, and romantic all at the same time. There's something to appeal to everyone. In the main game the plot holds together all the way to the end with hardly any "Oh, yeah right" eye-rolling moments.
The Bonus Chapter is just as interesting with a visit to Nix's home world. There are a couple of head-scratching moments in the BC logic, but we can overlook those in the name of fun. (Mostly things like a supposedly ancient ruin that can still use a modern piece of equipment.)
I gave 4 points on the storyline because of the logic blips in the BC and because they built up the suspense of romantic ties beyond the childhood friendship between Nix and Diana kind of in the background, but didn't really follow through with that aspect of the story until the very end. It was a bit too abrupt for me. I think the developers were trying not to be sappy, but IMO they weren't in any danger of that because there was so much other stuff going on! They could've given us a little bit more build up on that front.
If it's a question of CE vs SE then you're going to want to get the CE for the continuation of the story of the World Eaters' attempts to take over Nix's planet.
That's about it for me. So many other reviewers have given in detail reviews that I won't be a broken record. Puzzles, HOGs, artwork, graphics, voice-overs, cut scenes ... everything is TOP NOTCH in this game!
For me, this is the first runner-up for Game of the Year, right after Lost Lands: The Four Horsemen! ... and it's a tie with The Ballad of Rapunzel for most handsome heroes - Nix's Handsome Dad and Nix's Eyes vs. Ross Red's everything. LoL!
I recommend this game!

I bought this game because I really enjoyed the Spirit of Revenge Series - both Elizabeth's Secret and Cursed Castle. I clicked on "other Games" by the developer, saw Love Chronicles, and thought "Why not?" I like series and continuous stories so I demoed all three. The first one was just too out-dated and slow for me so I passed. The second in the series, The Sword and the Rose, was fairly decent. A bit old-fashioned but nice gameplay, cute story. Not the best but not the worst I've ever played. I was happy with it. I got it on a free game in SE. I then took the advice of one reviewer who said that if you wanted to follow the story then the only one you needed to get in CE was this one, Salvation. I demoed it, and up until the end of the demo it seemed to be fairly consistent with the series. I was looking forward to seeing how the prince turned the evil witch good, saved her soul, and found his soul mate in the process. It sounded like a great story to play through! Boy was I WRONG! Around Chapter 2/3 this became a complete mess.
The plot just fell apart. There are HUGE gaping holes in the story and it just became nonsense. I was greatly disappointed.
**Mild Spoiler Alert**
At the start of the game Alura's deceased mother has left a set of magic jewelry at Alura's house that will protect her from becoming evil but the jems are spread all over the place and you have to find them. But later on in the game you find that Alura's mother spent years in the dungeon at the bad guy's palace and apparently smuggled the baby out but died there - so where did Alura come from, is she the bad guy's daughter? How did the mother leave Alura a set of special protective jewels and she was locked in a dungeon, how did Alura know her mother? How could Alura cultivate a flower tree that protects people from all evil spells but not take it herself? How in the world could the jewels that go into her mother's special protective jewelry set be spread out all over the bad guy's realm just lying around for you to find? Why in the world would the bad guy just let you wander around his caves undoing all his evil work without actually stopping you? Why would he leave you alone to destroy his source of evil power? Why did he need to kidnap Alura in the first place? (They ask that question in the game but never answer it.) Where were all the guards? etc. etc.
These questions are just the tip of the iceburg. The nonstop run of nonsense HOSs were just ridiculous while they totally ignored plot points that could've given the story weight and increased interest - ie. the chained mermaid, the ghost of Hanga's guard. I was sucking my teeth and rolling my eyes through this entire game. Truly. It made no sense at all. In addition to all that, the scenery, the world, of the game didn't fit. The dark side that it was supposed to represent was rather childish in many places. There was just no cohesion to this game.
The only saving grace for this game was the Bonus Chapter which, as others have said, was better than the main game storywise; although it was too short. I'd have enjoyed that as a game all on its own.
Otherwise, if you're still interested in playing it simply because you can't stand to not know the end of a series, then get the SE. This isn't really worth a CE, no collectibles at all. Lackluster wallpapers. Meh. Unless you want to play the Bonus Chapter. It's good but too short to warrant another 6.99.
Soooooo, as you can tell, I'm not going to recommend this game. In fact, I wish I'd read the lowest reviews first and I'd probably have had a second thought about getting the series at all. Should've listed to Sergeij - his review was right on the money.
This is, of course, coming several years late so I don't actually expect many people to see it. But I had to share my critique anyway.
Later Fishies!
I don't recommend this game.
