BASED ON COMPLETED GAME AND EXTRA CHAPTER ON EXPERT LEVEL
For me, HOG games are all about "the story, the story, the story." Wow, does this game have a good story! Yes, it's the familiar "save the world from evil" scenario BUT it takes some twists and turns that kept me interested from beginning to end. I have no complaints at all about the story. The things that kept this game from being a five for me were the movement of the characters, heavy emphasis on demonology and the map not being a jump map. The game presents characters that I really did want to help, but that feeling was spoiled a little for me by the unrealistic way the characters looked and moved (think claymation.) The map was nice and useful except for the fact that is was not a jump map. That meant I had to run to and fro a LOT. I don't like that. It's a waste of my time and interrupts the unfolding of the story. The emphasis on demonology in the last chapter I found a little offensive. I'm not a fan of pentagrams and such and wish developers would refrain from using them. Other than that, this would make a great Halloween "treat" for you, IMO.
LIKED: Graphics were nice except for character movement Lots of scenes that are interesting Characters that actually make you want to save them Had some ethnic diversity which I like to see HOGS nice to look at and easy Puzzles fun but easy Nicely done voice overs
LOVED: The story grabs you from the beginning to end and then..... The story takes a twist in the last chapter which will surprise you
DISLIKED: Character movement Claymation-style, lumpy, thick looking characters Demons, pentagrams (but they weren't excessive)
AWFUL: The map was of no use because it wasn't a jump map resulting in LOTS AND LOTS of running around
BOTTOM LINE; Excellent story coupled with fairly easy HOGS and mini-games that build up to a whopper of a finish.
I'm going to be totally honest with you, I did enjoy this game, BUT it is pretty much the same old story you've probably played before. Without an interesting story, this game became a rather interesting "back and forth between areas collecting items to use elsewhere" game. Let me explain; you will find yourself LITERALLY picking up one item and having to run back many scenes to use it. This game is arranged so that you accomplish ONE thing and then have to use the jump map to go elsewhere to accomplish ONE thing and so on until the end. I personally hate that in a game. So why did I enjoy it? The jump map! Without that map, I would have pulled out all of my waist length hair, made a rope and beat the computer with it! It is THAT bad for back and forth movement. The graphics are crisp and clear except for the cut scenes which are blurry. The music tends not to be there at all, replaced with moans or actual silence. Now that I think of it, maybe I should down grade my score....hmmm, but it's not THAT bad. It's just a tired out game, sort of "been there done that" game. The bonus game does NOT make the collector's game worth buying. The bonus game is more of the same with a glitch in it (code shows at wheelbarrow) and a silly, silly way of getting rid of the spirits.
NEUTRALS; Helper flutter being Story, old and tired That detective guy who does nothing Bonus chapter.....just filler imo
LIKED: The game overall isn't bad Still graphics were clear Puzzles, were easy HOS, pertained to story, very easy The portraits you need to collect Achievements, all easily obtained Voice overs were pretty well done
LOVED: The jump map, shows you where you need to do something and takes you there.
DISLIKED: Music is dull (when it was there) Silence throughout much of the game, made me sleepy Blurry cut scenes, like looking through someone else's glasses Ending is nothing new Glitch in bonus chapter on wheelbarrow Map loaded slowly
HATED: Nothing
Bottom line: If you've ever played a HOG, you're probably going to get a feeling of deja vu. Nothing new, but you can enjoy it if you realize the story won't impress you and you use the jump map. Good luck and enjoy.
Sigh...this is the same tired story line about "we thought we had confined evil but it has escaped and now we need to recapture it before it destroys the world." That's not necessarily bad if it's well executed with linear movement and other great features. This games tries to deliver. I can tell the devs put lots of thought into the bells and whistles, but I wish they would have spent more thought on the story. I didn't think the story unfolded logically and missed having a journal which kept track of the story. In fact, there were scenes that branched off of the main theme that actually confused me. The last three scenes I found visually irritating with everything floating but the kitchen sink. (It might have been there and I just couldn't see it.) In my opinion, without a well-developed story to base the game on, the rest is just random games, HOS, and other filler. It just left me unsatisfied and disappointed.
LIKED: Jump map is nicely done but unavailable during some scenes Voice over well-acted, but not spectacular Length of game was pretty long Music adequate and pleasant Many different scenes Lots of different puzzles, but they are easy Lots of different types of HOS, they also are easy
LOVED: Colorful graphics
DISLIKED:: The story was unoriginal Story movement rather disjointed Scenes did not seem to relate to each other at times Moving back to a scene often brought up new "people" and objects which gave the game an off balance feel Backtracking The graphics of the monsters The end was unsatisfying
HATED: Nothing
BOTTOM LINE: If you are a puzzle, HOS and scenery lover you will enjoy this game. If you like your story to be as well done as the scenery, it's not for you. It's just a middle-of-the-road game, imo.
I recommend this game!

The Torment of Mont Triste Collector's Edition
No one dares fall asleep in the village of Mont Triste... for when sleep arrives, so does the mysterious Lord of Nightmares.
This game isn't a masterpiece story-wise, but it makes up for it with engaging puzzles, gorgeous graphics and characters whose lives are worth saving. When i first stepped into this game and saw what the story line was going to be, I thought, "here we go again...same old, same old." My assessment turned out to be wrong because I had a lot of fun playing this game. In spite of my skepticism, I found that I began to care about the characters and wanted to help them out of danger. At first I thought it was another bad guy wanting to take over the world scenario, but no, this bad guy is no ordinary bad guy and his motives are slowly explained in a way that will have you forgiving him by game's end. That's all I'm going to give away on that one, but I thought it was a major plus to the game to have that plot twist. The graphics are gorgeous and there is lots to see and do, so the game kept moving. There was no demonology, which is overused in my opinion and the ending I found to be very satisfying. I found absolutely no reason not to have some fun during this adventure. I think you will to, unless you're a beginner, in which case you may get a little overwhelmed without the walkthrough..
NEUTRALS: Music was ok, but I didn't notice it much Collected gargoyles which for me doesn't add to the game
I LIKED: The story line was believable and plays out nicely The HOS are not junk piles, but they are easy Voice overs are quite well done Story wraps up at end of game, so don't need to buy CE unless you want the extra game
I LOVED: The graphics which to my eye were colorful and crisp The jump map which indicated areas you needed to go to The reason behind the bad guy's badness Lots of achievements Mini-games and puzzles; some easy and others challenging but all doable with thought and patience Story moved linearly and made complete sense to me Magic amulet --- not telling you why ;-) Nightmare sequences appropriate and not terrifying Jump map disabled during nightmares so you are on your own which fitted the story Many different scenes and scenarios, all interesting, some new to me It looked to me like the devs dotted all their "i's" and crossed all their "t's" making this game nearly perfect
WASN'T CRAZY ABOUT: Some scenes downloaded slowly (minor point) A little backtracking, but not much
BOTTOM LINE: Feel-good game that will take you on an interesting journey where you get to free people from their nightmares. A few puzzles can be rather difficult, so I don't recommend the game for beginners unless they like a challenge. Enjoy! I did.

BASED ON COMPLETED GAME ON ADVANCED/EXPERT LEVEL
Ok, normally I really don't like games with "cute" characters or fairy-tale-like story lines, but in spite of myself, I did enjoy this game. This is one of those games that you have to "give a chance" before you can appreciate it's full merit. As soon as my fairy sidekick showed up, I almost stopped, but I forced myself on and I'm glad I did. The story is the usual "evil wants to take over the world and only YOU can save it" plot, but how the story moves and develops is done in a way rather unique to HOGs. In spite of what the low reviewers say, you do have to do some thinking, particularly towards the end of the game. The first thing new is that you have to click on an area of interest before it tells you what you need to look for in order to overcome it. So the first scene had me staring at the screen a moment before the light bulb went off in my brain. There are lots and lots of scenes with gorgeous scenery and the music is breathtakingly beautiful at times. Some items are used rather creatively, which I liked. This game also takes you into a world of beauty rather than the usual demonology-filled games. It leaves you feeling uplifted rather than terrorized, and I like that. I happen to think it takes more intelligence to create a game that leaves you feeling good rather than depressed. Most of the puzzles and HOS are rather easy, but towards the end there was a puzzle or two that had me scratching my head, which was great. I would not say this game is too easy, rather at times, it was challenging for me. The story winds up nicely and ends on a POSITIVE note. I'm glad I bought it and I don't say that lightly.
NEUTRALS; Two fairy helpers Story line of good vs evil is pretty standard Has some romance
I LIKED: The fast paced movement The voice overs were nicely done The ending was positive No gore, pentagrams, etc which I consider inappropriate for kids
I LOVED: The graphics....very colorful and exquisitely drawn The music, appropriate to the game and adds to the mood The unusual way I had to find an area of interest before being given the list of objects I needed to solve the clue THE MAP! was nearly perfect, showed where you needed to accomplish things, it was a JUMP map, put check marks when you finished a scene and totally closed areas where you didn't need to look anymore Game seemed very long to me, got my money's worth Ending leaves the door open for sequel The HOS were solved quickly so the game kept moving Games begin easy and become harder as the game goes on but all are doable
I DISLIKED: Lots of backtracking and I do mean LOTS! Without the jump map it would have been horrible
BOTTOM LINE: Beautiful feast for the eyes with a light story line appropriate for ages 10+ and all levels of players that will leave you feeling uplifted.
If you want a '40's era "old Hollywood" film noir feel, this is your game! I loved it. It brought back memories of lying on my grandparents' floor watching their old movies with Robert Mitchum as the bad guy. This game is nostalgic and down right exciting at the end. Bravo!
THE BEES KNEES: Artwork is colorful, easy on the eye Voice overs are fantastic LOTS of scenes and sets to visit Wonderfully useful JUMP map which indicates areas of action Plot moves very quickly Plenty of HOS which are part of the story and pretty easy Games are fun but take a little thought Journal which gives you CLUES to how to solve games Music is appropriate and gets your heart racing at the right times No demons, pentagrams, devils, etc. (yes!)
TINY FLAWS: Short game; 3 hrs for me When the cursor is aprox. 1/2 down page it wants to take you to the previous scene--kind of annoying Maybe a little too easy
BOTTOM LINE; This is a FUN game which is suitable for a beginner which will provide action, excitement and fun for people of all ages. You'll feel like you took a trip back in time to old Hollywood when starlets were all the rage.
WOW! It has been a long time since a game really drew me in and immersed me in its world, but this one sure does. From the minute my character woke up until the final credits, I was involved and having an exciting adventure. Although it is a rescue-your-child adventure, it's done in a NEW way with twists and turns that are truly UNIQUE to this genre. The last few scenes (which I won't spoil) got my heart racing for sure. For once, a developer created a truly frightening game without demons, pentagrams, witches, monsters, etc. A smart, fun experience!!
Awesome: Story line grabs you and doesn't let go Music creates excitement and racing heart Humor in the elevator music (cracked me up EVERY time) Voice overs sounded like REAL actors and made the characters seem realistic Ambiance is appropriately creepy and gave me the "willies" Puzzles are part of the story and all doable with a little thought Clever tasks that make you think, but aren't hard Linear story line so that you don't get stuck Wonderfully detailed map that helps you the whole way
Good: HOS are good, not hard to find most objects but some are sneakily hidden (I like that) Graphics are simplistic without being cartoonlike
TINY LITTLE CONS: Visit the HOS more than once, but it didn't bore me Some running around, but the place is so intriguing it didn't annoy me The map is not a jump map Graphics could have been a tad bit crisper
Bottom line: If you love Hitchcock style stories you will love this one as much as I did. I'm going to play it again, and I've NEVER done that with any other game.
Neutrals: Graphics are nothing special HOS and Puzzles are the usual type and difficulty Story has been told many times before Music is adequate
Pros: Lots of scenes and areas Diary Voice overs are well done Fast paced Easy to advance in the game Liked collecting the cards
Cons: Most scenes are shades of brown=boring Graphics not very crisp making some objects almost impossible to see Abrupt ending, dissatisfying All of the areas look the same, brown run down places with junk No hints No map
Potentially offensive to some: Human body parts in jars Using human body parts in experiment Dead bodies
Bottom Line: There is nothing awesome or awful about this game, but I wouldn't buy it. I got it as a freebie. That's about all I'd recommend it for. Good for a rainy day.
Living in Gettysburg all of my life and having seen many of the historical sites where Lincoln visited, including the room where he completed the famous Gettysburg Address, I expected this game to make more sense than it does. If you're looking for the game to present Lincoln and the other main characters in a historically sound adventure, this is not the game for you. This game is purely fantasy, and that's ok IF you aren't VERY familiar with Lincoln, Mary Todd, Willie, Quantrill's Raiders, Jesse James and the Civil War. Because I am well educated on this topic, I found this game confusing. I tried to turn my factual mind off and just enjoy the game, but even so, it was just a mess.
Pros: Lots of action Adequate voice overs Interesting scenes Game moves quickly Get to collect clovers and ravens
Cons: Some of the graphics are so bad that the objects bear small resemblance to the actual object Glitters even in expert mode Little to no music Kindergarten level puzzles HOS are so easy as to be silly time wasters VERY short game Confusing historical background, for example: a) Lincoln was presented as a devotee of spiritualism, believing in curses/witches, but it was Mary Todd who was the devotee and gave seances in the White House. Lincoln grew up Baptist. b) Willie is saved by you during the game, when in fact, Willie died causing Lincoln to go into a deep depression and began Mary Todd's descent into mental illness, because he was their favorite child. Lincoln had 4 children, only ONE of which (Robert) survived to adulthood Quantrill, Jesse James, et al each have historical inaccuracies which may spoil the game for you if you are familiar with their true histories..
(I'll stop there so I don't ruin the game, but suffice it to say, the end is factually incorrect)
Bottom line: It's a so-so experience based on pure fantasy with easy games and HOS, but it's not suitable as a teaching game for kids.
Wow! I absolutely hated this game in spite of Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek being among one of my favorite games. I couldn't wait for this game to come out. I had to force myself to finish this game and when I had, I was very glad it was over. I was so bored. First of all, more demon worship....head demon, his minions, human sacrifice to sustain demons, little girl in jeopardy and only I can save her and the world. Like I haven't heard that story before. Add onto that the oft repeated story line of the tree roots taking over and strangling, sucking the life out of the world and all the good things that inhabit it, and imo, you have a disaster of a game. I kept thinking I had played it before. The puzzles are RIDICULOUSLY EASY, there is a lot of back and forth movement and the HOS are simple.
In short:
Old fashioned graphics Worn out story Easy puzzles Lots of back tracking Demons and more demons Tree roots and more tree roots Boring music Nothing challenging Nothing new No originality And if I hear my character call that little girl "sweetheart" one more time I'm gonna scream.
Seriously folks, even if you loved Enigmatis....please try the demo first and make sure this game is for you.
