I usually play all the way through a demo but this one just couldn't even get me that far into it, just too boring. Simple "puzzles", some of the graphics were OK but the characters are like pieces of plastic. Try before you buy, is my advice.
I rarely bother with writing a bad review on games as there are usually enough of them already to warn people not to buy, but as there are (inexplicably) some 5-star reviews, I want to put in my opinion as well. This is based on the demo only and I was actually happy when it ended before the promised 90 minutes. Aside from the cartoonish colors, which I'll just ignore, the completely weird gameplay had me almost amused at times. Sure, of course I'd keep the key to my boat in the fireplace, complete with a lit fire yet... And so on. The mini-games, which I had set on Hard, were juvenile at best. I see that other reviews reference some better puzzles so maybe the ones in the demo just happen to be the worst of the lot. If the demo is any indication of the challenge and fun factor to come, I would have to give this game a resounding "Don't Buy"...at least before you try.
Free the frog princes from the clutches of an evil witch! Return them to their princess brides, and find out if the kiss of love can break the witch’s curse!
This is based on the demo only. I kind of like the cartoonish graphics and some of the puzzles are quite entertaining but my main criticism is that even on the hardest setting, there is far too much help given, down to telling us every little thing we need to do. I don't know why devs offer a game with a hard or custom setting and then don't just let us decide how much help we want, if any. A somewhat amusing game, but there are too many others I'd rather spend my time playing. Will still give it a recommendation as it wasn't bad enough not to.
This game is beautifully rendered and the option to learn about the different countries is a welcome bonus. As is often the case, I found the colors to be too similar in most of the puzzles; why, with all the colors available, do so many of these games have that flaw? I also found one puzzle where I had to guess at the solution; I looked very closely but maybe I missed something as it was the only one (sorry, didn't make a note of it...). This is from playing the demo only.
This game pretty much has it all: Great graphics, nice music, absolutely fine voice-overs, especially the dragon; I thought that if there ever were a dragon, he would have exactly that kind of voice. And the puzzles...lots of them! Some were very easy, but the full-page ones, which are always a favorite of mine, required some thought and were very entertaining. Even the HOS, which are not my favorite thing in games, were done well, with quite some variety. I'm looking forward to checking out the rest of the series, as this one hinted that perhaps Anabel will be back...
What a weird game! I've never played a demo where there was so much hand-holding. The first full-page puzzle looked like it was going to be a good challenge but then gave instructions from start to finish; in a way, it had to as there was no logical way to figure it out, as there usually is in puzzles of this kind...just flip this switch, set this slider to 9, etc. etc. The graphics are actually quite good, but the voice-overs are terrible, especially the star character Monica; she sounds more like an especially annoying Valley Girl than someone with whom you'd want to travel through several hours of a video game. Just awful...I can't believe any devs are unable to find people with decent voices to play these parts! It's a shame, as this could have been a decent game with just a little more care and a lot fewer instructions.
The story started off promisingly enough but here we are in Paris, and not one French accent?! I'm surprised none of the reviews in so far have mentioned that. The game is quite simplistic and a bit annoying in that characters promise an item in return for a favor and then ask another favor. The puzzles so far in the demo were somewhat enjoyable although pretty simple; the graphics are really quite good. All in all, a game that I feel will be more of a hit with novices than more seasoned players and I will recommend it on that basis.
This was a good game from start to finish. I'm always an avid fan of puzzles and there were certainly a few here that I'd never seen before. And although I'm not a big fan of HOS, even those were fun to play.
The voiceovers were especially good and the graphics were absolutely stunning.
I just looked back over my list of games and saw that many of the games in this series got a mediocre description from me so I didn't buy them, but the ones that I considered to be good turned out to be great fun; I just bought Nightsville Horror and am looking forward to playing it next; if it turns out to be as good as Darkwater Bay I will be a happy camper indeed.
I just finished the demo and was amazed to see the first 3 reviews gave it 5 stars each. Have liked this series in the past but I've found the more recent games to be boring at best. This demo had one decent puzzle (the one with electric switches) but that's been done many times before and for the rest it was just find stuff, place stuff. The graphics were well designed except I found them to be dark and fuzzy in a lot of places, and as this is a common complaint from a lot of players, was surprised that was not commented on by anyone as yet...we shall see what future reviews have to say. I see there are 56 mini-games total, so am somewhat tempted to buy it (on sale) just to see if there's any improvement as it goes on but this one is probably going to be a pass for me.
I've never given a game only one star but when I saw what high ratings it got, just had to put in my 2 cents. First of all, it wasn't even as creepy as a lot of people seem to feel; to me, it was just too hokey to consider it scary. There wasn't even one good puzzle in the whole game, and the HOS were just OK. Add to that the annoying voice over of the little girl and I just felt it was a total flop. The only good thing going for it was that it only took me less than 3 hours to play; having bought it I couldn't not finish it, but at least the torture didn't last all that long. I can't remember what possessed me to buy it in the first place, except that the other Maze demos were pretty good, so I have to think this may be the worst one of them. I'll replay some of them just out of curiosity but this Maze is a definite dud for me.
