Just tried this demo as it came SO highly recommended but I'm certainly not sold. The graphics and music are pretty good, but every HOG in the demo is the same, just the usual boring piles of stuff. Puzzles are not challenging or unique at all, which for me is a major factor. I don't know why the game got such rave reviews but maybe I'm just burned out on games that don't have anything new to offer. This is definitely a good caution to refrain from buying a game just because so many people give it a lot of stars.
The demo ran so badly I actually thought the game didn't load correctly so I exited and restarted several times, only to find out that's just the way it runs. The cursors were so far off objects it was nearly impossible to figure out what needed to be done; in fact, the cursor to go back to a previous location was inside the items boxes and almost off the bottom of the screen. Not bad voices, but the English was so poor it was comical in places.
Same old puzzles in the demo as have been offered a thousand times before and the HOG's were not much better.
I would strongly urge that no one buy this game without first playing the demo.
As this is one of the oldest Nancy Drew games, I might be willing to cut it more slack, however there are some really bad features that even in an older game could have been done better. First off, the navigation was just weird from start to finish; it is awkward to get around at all and made much worse by the fact that moving left or right and turning around are all done with arrows, but moving ahead is done with the magnifying glass lit up in red, which is usually only for interacting with places and things but in this game is used for both; it's beyond me why they didn't just use an arrow for going straight ahead as well. And then there's the Save function; only about 8 slots so you can't save as often as you might like, and the whole Save/Load process is somewhat confusing. I did a Save after the most complicated puzzle and when I tried to place it in one of the old slots something went wrong and I lost about 1 1/2 hours of game play.
All in all, it is quite a short game, which actually didn't bother me that much as I didn't find it all that entertaining. I think if it were one of the first Nancy Drew games I played I might have enjoyed it more, but playing it after almost all the other games in the series left me less than impressed. Glad they vastly improved these games as I have really enjoyed most of them. I would recommend to try it first but of course there are no demos for the ND series (my pet peeve with HerInteractive!)
After seeing the screenshots I knew that visually this game would be a treat but that's where it ended. Even during the demo, I came across a level that couldn't be solved using logic alone and that's when I noticed that the game is designed so that players are allowed (forced) to use a certain number of hints.
I just prefer games that have more of a challenge so I would not recommend it to anyone who is similarly inclined.
After playing World Mosaics Chroma, this game is an absolute bust for me. Most of it is far too simple, except that even in the demo I came across one level that can't be solved by logic. The design is abysmal; some of the colors can hardly be distinguished from the background and there is always a row or column that stays highlighted, making it even harder to determine the colors. The music is just boring. The so-called mini-puzzles are far too simple; nice idea to include these but they could have been made more challenging and fun.
I hope no one makes the mistake of buying this without first playing the demo.
PS: I don't usually even bother to write reviews for games I don't like as I know tastes vary, but having playing the best of all griddler games -- aforementioned Chroma -- I've seen it's possible to create these games to be a challenge worth playing so just had to give the devs a thumbs-down.
I've only just played the demo but am already a huge fan. Hard to believe I only got to Level 5 and it's already this challenging, so I am more than curious to see what the remaining 75 Levels have in store! There isn't much of a tutorial but it's easy enough to figure out what can and can't be done; mostly it's a matter of using some logic to see how the pieces can be cleared and since there are no limits on time or number of moves that's certainly doable.
This will definitely be a buy for me once I have time to devote to the hours of fun I'm sure the rest of the game has to offer.
This is not a game I'd like to see young kids playing. I made it through the demo but was turned off by the constant references to people being burned and even one line that "God" had rid the world of witches...presumably by burning them. IMHO, there are many ways to make games that are entertaining and challenging that do not have such a dark plot, especially as this one is based in tragic reality.
As far as the challenging aspect, I found the mini games to be quite mundane and the HO scenes nothing out of the ordinary. From a graphics standpoint, I found it somewhat garish but that's just personal taste. On top of that, the devs used that awful font comprised of thick and thin lines which I find hard to read even with my excellent eyesight. All around, this game was bad enough to prompt me to submit this review and I do hope parents will give it a look before allowing their youngsters to play it.
I've played almost every Nancy Drew game and this one, for me, started out slower than most of the others; it took me some time to figure out that I simply had to use an item on a door in order to make the game continue but once I figured that out, the rest flowed very well. I don't recall any other ND games that had the number of puzzles this one has and was pleasantly impressed by their originality and level of difficulty. The environments, as always, are beautifully done and quite scary in places.
It always dismays me to read bad reviews that are written by people who are looking for games that offer a completely different format; Nancy Drew games are not comprised of hidden object scenes and the puzzles they incorporate are there as an important part of the challenge, so I, for one, am happy that the developers have never offered a Skip button; it's just good to know there are games tailored to players who enjoy the challenge.
Having played this game, and The Deadly Device just before it, I'm hoping that Big Fish will soon be offering #32, Sea of Darkness. In the meantime, I'll be playing the few older games I haven't tried yet. Regards to all and Happy Gaming!
I played the demo as it got such good ratings and several reviews mentioned it was a puzzle lover's delight. Aside from the good voice-overs and decent graphics, I found that although there were a good many puzzles they were all just run-of-the-mill which we've seen too many times to be special any longer. The weird thing with the fireball in the circular maze, and the overly dramatic use of cards to do the hero's bidding are just not features I like to see in a game.
I think it's time for developers to stop just churning out games with fancy graphics that seem to try to hide the fact that there's too little real substance there. I would advise no one buy this game without trying the entire demo, but it's a pass for me.
When an elusive killer strikes a high-tech lab, Nancy Drew is called in to sneak into secret areas, interrogate workers for multiple motives, and expose the truth behind The Deadly Device!
I've played almost all the Nancy Drew games and this is one of the very best. As is usually the case, there is a lot to be learned along the way and I found myself pausing several times to Google different topics concerning Tesla. Aside from that, the audio and video quality are excellent. The puzzles were interesting and just complicated enough for someone like me who looks for a challenge in games. Great environments and all the voice-overs are super; makes me regret even more that soon we will no longer hear Lani Minella portraying Nancy.
I know this forum is not for tech problems, but the technical issues forum is locked so I just wanted to mention one problem I did encounter: The hum outside the lab never occurred so I was unable to get into Ellie's office and move forward, so I switched from playing Master Sleuth to Amateur and that ran fine. I may have neglected to complete some step required to get the hum activated, but was simply not able to get it to work....
Thanks to Big Fish for another great offering, and I am looking forward to the next one!
