This is the first game in hundreds I have played that made me sit back as the credits rolled and reflect on life and afterlife and basic human comfort and strength. It was…strange. And a very peaceful aftermath of an incredibly soul touching game. Reading the other reviews before I took on this game, I thought people were over-exaggerating but weirdly enough, I feel that the game has an intense meaning and is beautifully crafted to bring it across.
Yes, this is definitely not for everyone. It has no voice-over at all, and it has a lot of reading compared to almost any other game I have played. It is very slow, and very full of HO's, the graphics are old-school and somewhat grainy, and the length of the game is about average. Normally these are all things I am not a huge fan of but I absolutely loved this game.
The premise has been explained by other reviewers but let me explain why this game deserves five stars. The lack of voice-overs actually make the game much more powerful…you are in a post-apocolyptic world, alone, no one is with you, and the deafening silence and quiet music make you, as a player, completely ally with your character and genuinely feel the weight of an empty world. When you meet a cat you rescue and it meows, I actually jumped a bit, the sound startled me. As you travel further into the world, the cat is threatened to be separated from you, and I actually teared up a bit (call me sentimental, but it has never ever happened to me before in a game). It brought home how much we crave and need other warm bodies in our life…the epitome of loneliness was very raw.
This game is sad. And stressful. And silent. And desperate. But it is an amazing amazing storyline and literally sticks in your thoughts and makes you second guess your actions in life. It's a very basic gameplay with very basic HO's and puzzles. If you don't like reading and no map and no directional hints and no voice-overs and a slower pace, then don't get this game. Maybe try the demo. But if you want a lengthy, deep and beautiful storyline with a comic-book/manga feel and serious plot, go for it. Jump in and meet the Chessmaster, save a starving cat, overcome massive odds, stand up for true love, be the white grain of rice, and make your way through the dark.
Happy gaming, fellow Fishies!
I recommend this game!

I am a huge fan of the Dana Kingstone collection and have played every CE that has come out. And while it stayed true to the old-fashioned style and graphics, the length of the game appalled me, especially for a CE.
The biggest thing I look through reviews for on Big Fish is the length of a game, especially if I am investing money into a CE. So here is my experience and length of game:
After starting the game on Intermediate mode, I blew through the first chapter in only 25 minutes. Worried, I played the rest on Expert mode with no guide use, and still managed to finish the game in it's entirety in 3 hours and 20 minutes. "It's ok", I thought to myself, "I still have the bonus chapter." Which I finished in less that 15 minutes. LESS THAN 15 MINUTES. With no guide use. Total time for both the game and the bonus chapter was under 4 hours, which is absolutely abysmal and makes the amount paid for the game not worth the short gameplay.
The plot was the similar ghost apparition leading us on a mystery but actually almost identical this time to the last game, which was frustrating. The villain of the game doesn't try to stop you from poking around his house, so the danger thrill is minimal... and the collectables were 40 cards that were easy to see and were put in each scene so it was no fun collecting.
I very much enjoy the Dana games…but this one was absolutely disappointing as a CE. I recommend this game to any Kingstone fans that don't mind the shortness, in exchange for the ability to get back into this style of ghost world. But only as an SE. Do NOT invest in the CE. The bonus chapter is more like a bonus blurb, and the story resolves itself in the main game.
Happy playing, Big Fishies!
I recommend this game!

I got this game using one of my free credits and after downloading it, I kept putting off playing the game because the intro scene just didn't grab me at all. Finally on a snowed-in afternoon, I buckled down, and I am really glad I did so.
Dad left a mess in his house with gadgets and puzzles he knows only you, his daughter, can solve. But a villain has masterminded a plan by abducting your brother to make sure you solve all the mysteries and give the coveted item over when you are done! Can you rescue your brother and protect your Dad's wonderful invention….as well as his terrible terrible secret?? Can you??????
The best part about this game: it goes on and on and on. I kept thinking I was near the end, and it just kept on going. The puzzles were well-spaced and had a lot of twists and uniqueness which was very refreshing. Some of the puzzles were extremely difficult but still held my interest. Yes, the whole horoscope theme can get a bit tiring but it was interspersed with pirates and Egyptians and gardens and so much more.
Two complaints: the hint button is a film reel that flashes. Constantly. CONSTANTLY. It was so distracting that I couldn't get involved fully in the game. I normally play my games in the evening but the bright light wiggling in the bottom right corner almost drove me crazy. I finally put a sticky note on my monitor to cover it up and was able to enjoy the game without distraction.
My other complaint is something that other Big Fishies feel differently about. I absolutely can't stand the live actors/actresses that are put in the game. I don't like the switching from cartoon to real and back again; I can't relate to the characters, and it honestly takes the scare and thrill from the game…the main villain actress was so contrived, it felt very stilted and took all the danger and suspense out of the game for me. I know other people don't mind it….I personally seek out games that have strictly animation only. So take that into account!
Overall, good graphics with a fun storyline. A lot of ground to cover, so be aware the map does NOT let you fast-track…you have to go everywhere manually. But the length is wonderful and the whole game was a lot of fun! Try it!
I recommend this game!

So many dreams…so little time!
This game was objectively very well done, had a few new puzzles that haven't been overdone and had a good length of game play. However it will frustrate some gamers because it is deceptively mechanic and hardware themed.... Yes yes, I knew it would be sic-fi but the name 'Emerald Maiden' evoked a rather Victorian feel for me. I am the type of person that loves to do cooking puzzles and sneak around castles, so putting together ray guns, and machinery after new tech machinery was rather boring and eye-glazing. It reminded me of the 'Abyss: Wraiths of Eden' game that also had a good storyline but so much grey metal scenes that it lost it for a fairytale adventurer like myself.
Overall the length of the game was great about 5 and a half hours on 2nd mode, however the length of the bonus game was abysmal…maybe 25 minutes with no hints. If the SE was out I would definitely have gone for that instead…minimal collectables (16 roses) and no notable achievements. The graphics were somewhat washed out, and the characters were very realistic from far away but startlingly cartoonish up close, which threw me off the emontional bond I like to create with the cast. The plot was easy to unravel after the first 30 minutes, and the ending was an obvious ploy for a sequel but still wrapped things up in a satisfying way. And the dreams were at most one or two scenes…which was sad to me. I thought the majority of the game would be in different worlds when in fact maybe an 1/8th of game time was bouncing quickly to a jungle setting. Boo...
I would recommend this game to anyone who is a big fan of the nitty gritty sci-fi tools and doesn't mind tinkering with radios and rockets, or for those of you who really want a change from the fanciful games out there. Worth the time it takes to play it and has a few good tidbits, nothing wowed me but I didn't stop playing it either. However, wait for the SE!
I recommend this game!

I am in love with both of the Brink of Consciousness games...but this game had particularly stunning visuals that made this a 5 star game for me.
One of the highlights of this series is that fact that you, playing Owen Wright, talk with your detective friend and any other person you meet in the game through automatic voiceover responses. When you are moving through scenes and an anonymous voice begins to shout threats at you, you yell back at him to show himself, scoundrel! I absolutely fell in love with my character talking because I find myself thinking "What?" or "Really?" when a character is talking to me in games, so having my actual character say "What?" and giving input was just awesome. Owen Wright, you are a fearless and fun Englishman to play!
The graphics were gorgeous, one ill-fated woman in particular was so well drawn I took a screen shot of the image to save. There were quite a handful of standard HOs but the game made up for that in great dialog, a wealth of people to meet and interact with, good length, lots of area to explore, and a well done spooky Victorian era atmosphere.
I highly recommend this game for people who want a good Sherlock Holmes-esque murder mystery to solve, for people who want a clear crisp game with a well-balanced mixture of HO/adventure, and for anyone who is tired of playing the overwhelmed heroine and wants to be a well respected, stubborn Victorian gentleman for a change!
I recommend this game!

I really really wanted to love this game. And if you are more prone to play games based on the graphics and mini games alone, not the actual story line then you will LOVE this game. But I love games for the stories themselves, which is why I was severely let down in this game.
I am not going to reveal anything in this review that would spoil the plot at all, but for the first time I wish I could...I can say that the plot involves a mystery that is completely ruined within the first hour by an anonymous voice that is completely recognizable. The end, while satisfactory, does NOT explain how it would be possible for the events to unfold the way they had over the years, even with the magic and fantasy thrown in. Completely non-existant mystery ruined by the voice overs...and the one part that I wanted explained at the end made absolutely NO logical sense. Details in the game were illogical...a loving tight-knit family that would allow their children to endanger themselves within view of the back of the house? Really? One family's heart ache drives an entire prosperous town to ruin? Even as a fantasy style game...I was completely uninspired and frustrated by it.
This game tries very very hard to be a physiological childhood angst game but any person looking for a game that gets them involved in the characters and stories will be sorely sorely disappointed.
However, the graphics were wonderful, the mini games were great and some were a bit new or different which was nice, the flashbacks themselves were handled with a twist, and the HOs were the normal junk piles.
If you want a game for the adventure/HO, by all means, this is a great great game. If you want a game that is plausible and connects you to the story and has surprises thrown at you, no. Still recommending because of the length and puzzles.
I recommend this game!

After playing many many HOG/Adventure games, I will have to rate this one of the top three games I have ever played. The graphics alone are absolutely stunning and so visually creative, it makes the actual plot pale in comparison. Even the mini puzzles were so gorgeous that I would just sit and look at them for minutes before I started in. My favorite was a mini game that had a mossy stone turtle with a teeming miniature reef suspended on its back instead of a shell. Even the tiniest of details were beautiful. Snails scooting by on the ground with tiny palm trees and little island on their shells...just enjoyable and awesome to stare at. And the games were done with little twists that made them refreshing to play.
The plot was reuniting a family, helping a crumbling magical kingdom. I thought my guide would annoy me but I actually like his little facial expressions and comments. No lags, a bit short in length for me (I wanted more!) but so many places to go and creatures to meet and help.
I rarely, if ever, play games more than twice but I will be playing this game over and over again, and waiting impatiently for a sequel.
I recommend this game!

I put off buying this one for a while because sometimes the overly sweet fairy games can be very repetitive. But I am so glad I ended up taking the plunge! The game has a large cast of glittering, doe-eyed and rainbow colored animals, fairies, and elves that still were unique. The plot of the game has been done in a similar fashion many many times, but the graphics and mini puzzles made up for that. A lot of new little keys and tools that were a bit different from other games. The hint button was a little elf that shoots arrows, so I did have trouble a few times understanding what he was shooting at; the magic fairy was frustrating until I realized that she only has enough magic for a single use until you find her another magic refill.
The length was good, I loved the bonus chapter. Honestly, just a nice fantastical break from the ghosts and glowing eyes and orphaned children that I spend a lot of time meeting in other games.
I recommend this game!

I absolutely loved this game, and I wish I had gotten it sooner! As a hardcore Nancy Drew game player throughout the earlier years, I miss the adventure and storyline that builds up and gets me really really involved in the adventure. This game has just enough adventure, coupled with some wisely placed HO, to keep the player interested and then allow the brain to cool back down a bit. I know how easy it can be to get overloaded quickly in an predominately adventure game, so this one was refreshing.
I thought the torso of Angelica would annoy me since she is facing the screen in the bottom right corner, but I honestly forgot she was there after about ten minutes of playing. Her muted clothing blends in well with the scenery and her reactions were on time and didn't give anything away.
The dialog was good; I did have to go and read the journal to keep from confusing the names and dates towards the end, but all in all, a good different type of game that I actually had huge amounts of fun playing. A definite yes for all adventure fans, and for all you HO fans, maybe give it a try!
I recommend this game!

After playing all of the Dark Tales games, I do rate this one as probably one of my top favorites. Again, you are Detective Dupin uncovering the truth, but this game allows the player to make the moral decisions, using 'guilt balls' that are given to you throughout the game.
The graphics were very nice; I really liked meeting so many different people in this game as opposed to other games, and there was a nice mixture of HO with mini puzzles, like finding ingredients to bake bread, that used the surroundings instead of continually staring at a row of marbles or untangling strings.
Good music. My only pet peeve was the hint button in the mini games that would show you an object but not how to move forward in the puzzle...frustrating at times.
Worth the SE price with a satisfying, albeit quick ending!
I recommend this game!
